will G2 get custom 4.4 based roms? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

right now I'm still torn between G2 and Nexus 5, while G2 clearly has a rather superior hardware I've been spoiled with the look from pure 4.4 experience also unfortunately the Nexus isn't available yet on my country.
but from what I've seen there is no 4.4 based rom for G2 too, the question is, will it happen? specifically though I really want the kitkat version of Paranoid Android, will it come to G2? or is it actually more sure will come faster to Nexus 5?

It will eventually. But no manufacturers will gets it as fast nexus devices. If on time updates and rom is your main concern then your choice is limited.
-LG G2

I'm torn about this too, interested in the G2's battery life but only if I can get AOSP very smoothly and with no fuss. I wonder how stable CM11 nightlies will be for the first few months.

yeah, gsmarena battery test on nexus 5 kill my enthusiasm with it, however if it still a looong way for G2 to get 4.4 based rom then I'll just get nexus.

I know that everyone says that Nexus devices get updates the soonest, and while that's completely true and valid, to me it doesn't feel that way. I usually wait for CM or AOKP to put out stable builds before I upgrade, and by then they've built for every device and my neighbor's cat. Heck, it's been two weeks since 4.4 came out, and so far the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 7 officially have it, while in the mod community, CM11 is already out for other devices in a useable form. So, certainly official support for Nexus devices is quickest, but practically all the devices in the mod community get updates pretty quick.
That being said, the Nexus 4 has no official 4.4, but we on LG G2 are going to get CM11 very soon.

is this phone really get the support for at least 2 years from LG or they will just leave G2 behind with only one/ two update provided like what they did on their flagship phone in the past like LG Optimus 2x

I'm pretty sure we'll get a working PA 4.0 (KitKat 4.4) pretty soon. Houston already has his version of PA 3.99 up and running for us and he was just made a member of the PA Team the other day. It's just a matter of time, guys, be patient. . Houston kicks ass, too!

so do you think it's better to buy G2 than Nexus 5?

Problem for Canadians is there's almost no support at all for D803s. Huge drawback of so many variants of G2.

It's so true. I'm disheartened by the lack of availability for the d803, however don't posses the skills to do something about it. I've started down the long road of trying to learn for myself so I'm not just one of those people that sit idly by and complain... but like I said it's a long road and it feels like I'll probably own a G4 by the time if figure out how to bring ROMs over to the G2 lol

I was obsessing over getting the nexus 5 for as long as it was leaked it was coming out. Once it was confirmed it wasn't coming to Verizon I thought I would settle for the G2. Let me tell you that now I have had it for 2 weeks and tried every ROM out there so far. I can happily say I didn't settle at all. Great phone. Came from gnex. Roms are coming out. Not at nexus speed but they are out there. Waiting for pa 4.0 but I am rocking a ROM from the droid Razer forum not xda called vallidus by GZ ROMs. Lots of functions. Everything you could want. Build is 4.3.1 base. Absolutely stable.

Seeing how they are so similar again, like N4 and LGOG were, I would buy the G2 for its added battery size alone. Also, Houston has the Canadian version and is currently hard at work on PA 4.0. Just be patient.:thumbup:

will it work on the international version of G2?

Hosers, eh?
Well, my take is that the Nexus is so similar to the G2 that we can't help but get lots of dev support (ie, so many of us who didn't want to wait for the Nexus and/or changed our minds at the last minute the same way a Chevy dealer puts a Corvette in the showroom to sell you a Malibu). We might not see as much as the G4 or the One, but Chrysler still sells a ton of cars even though they are not Ford or GM. I came from a Skyrocket which was just different enough from the S2 not to use the same roms, but close enough that it still has (unofficial) CM/PA/AOKP/PacMan support plus half a dozen hobbyist roms two years out.
Will we get "Official LG" Android 4.5 six minutes after the Nexus? No. Will I be stripping the factory rom and bloat off my phone the instant I get home from vacay (and off this stupid mac) and NEVER looking back? Absolutely.
And to the 803 guys and gals, I make no claims to be an expert by any means, but from the little reading I have done so far, the main difference between the models seems to be in the bootloader not the rom, so if that's the case you're bound to have someone up there willing to compile CM or whathaveyou for the 803... it just might not be "official."

Honestly I bought the g2 with the intention of throwing vanilla on there the moment I got it. I wound up digging the stock ROM more than AOSP. Some awesome features and optimisation and 4.4 next month!

*off topic* CM and PAC are both official for the rocket, so is Carbon and Slim Bean. That community is awesome and I still find myself visiting it daily. Team chopsticks already have a pretty stable alpha 2 version of cm11 up for the ol' 727 and, you're right, there are a ton of hobbyists in that community that have brought just about every rom you could want.

I'm just worried about getting myself into a situation where AOSP ROMs aren't working out or have problems. What's the main diff between T-Mobile (D801), AT&T (D800), and international (D802)? Does international work on US LTE? Does the Loki patch and CM 10.2 absolutely work on the T-Mobile version?

People.. Quit worrying it will happen

AOSP ROMs for G2

I'm trying to decide between the G2 and Note 3. Obviously both have their plus and minus points but what will sway it for me is the dev action with vanilla ROMs.
I know it's early days for the G2, and N3 isn't even out yet, but I'd like opinions on whether G2 is gonna get much love in this respect? Did the LG Optimus G Pro get much? Also any other factors preventing this, such as locked bootloaders, etc. I will be looking at getting the UK version.

A super alpha (more proof of concept) cm10.1 just went up today.
Wow great news to hear there is a CM build for this already, even if it is a really buggy early alpha right now. It will get better.
I think that if the Nexus 5 is in fact what we have been seeing the past few days in the FCC papers then the G2 will also get some great AOSP love since the hardware itself is near identical, the physical form factor is what is changed.

I don't have enough posts to post in that thread, but I'm on board with this effort. I'll gladly help with getting a fully function CM port running; doing so will also effectively complete the groundwork for a true Nexus-like vanilla AOSP build.
I'm a professional developer who works with desktop C++ and embedded linux, hacked on and rolled my own kernel drivers, etc. My plan is to make this my weekend project and hammer out ABI/proprietary binary issues to get a build of either CM or AOSP fully functional. Odds are good that the release of the N5 will make this process substantially easier as it will share a very similar hardware platform and include binaries linked against the latest kernels for KitKat.
I am excite.
I had been running Carbon ROM on my GNex and loved the AOSPness of it, but have to admit, I kinda enjoy some of the LG stuff. Would love LG + AOSP rom including things like tap-tap and the camera (although I miss Photosphere)

You just have to wait patiently. Barely 2 weeks ago CM10.2 went up for the G Pro finally, and since then, you simply have to look in the Original Devleopment forum to see what has happened. Literally, a dozen AOSP 4.2 and 4.3 ROMs popped up, all perfectly functional.
Just wait and contribute all you can and we'll all see AOSP soon.
I'm really looking into the g2 being my next device. However..... If it can't have a fully functional PACman ROM ported over, I'm out then.

Nexus 5 ROM on G2?

Does anybody know if it is possible to flash Nexus 5 ROMs on the G2? I am considering them both but the G2 32 GB costs the same as Nexus 5 16 GB in Norway.

You can't just flash another device's ROM, it is specific to your model.
That being said, expect to see a stock KitKat ROM for the G2 fairly soon.
Strange that the Nexus is so expensive there, the G2 is a clearly superior phone from a hardware perspective, so I'd get the G2 for sure.

Its simple, the G2 is highly likely to get kitkat roms very soon. So no debate in my opinion unless you lrefer the design of the nexus.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
He is asking this because he likes hardware of G2 and UI of nexus, so even when G2 will get Kit Kat, it will still be skinned and nothing different.
The ideal thing is for LG to release optional Google edition Nexus Rom for G2
Second ideal thing is, someone port Nexus Kit Kat for G2.
But this time, i don't find any reason to root, or change rom around of my G2, if things Ok with my phone, i know by saying that i don't belong to here, but, changing ROM was fine for me when i had Xperia x10 Mini and i had to install Android Jelly bean on it. Why not? for look and feel? i prefer dark menu over white menu or settings for G2.
Nexus 5 Launcher is good for it, but is it better than Nova? when Nova can mimic Nexus 5 launcher by increasing icon size to 120%.

Just curious...why do you think this? I'm not saying the opposite, just I'm not aware of any evidence supporting what you say.
I also came from a GNex recently and I'm a bit let down by the slow/minimal development for this device. Even now, there are only a handful of 4.3 roms available, and these are mostly unofficial ports. Thankfully my beloved SlimBean is one of them and it works great on my d801.
However my only experience with a smartphone was the GNex and I guess it spoiled me re: dev activity. Do we simply need to wait for more 4.3 and 4.4 roms to come? When will the official releases arrive, like AOKP that has been rumored for quite a while now?
I was hoping that since the G2 was essentially a Nexus 5 that there would be portability between ROMs. I guess it's still early in the game and we should see what unfolds over the coming weeks.

[Poll/Opinion] Who's still running a GPE device/or converted?

Since the release of GPE Devices, people thought that things would change. I am not sure that the devices sold like hotcakes, but I do know some people did buy them. With their release also came the possibility to fully convert your Sense-based HTC One to a fully stock GPE stock android device. Thanks to @graffixnyc for his thread. Please ask there for questions on how to do that.
Since the other GPE threads got closed down, I'd like to know who has a GPE device/or converted and maybe why you are running with the device or converted? This thread is also open to speculation, theories, and off topic thoughts in anticipation of 4.4 OTA.
While I don't encourage flaming, and google-bashing. I do want this specific thread to be to throw out those ideas about what you think google's plan for GPE devices is and how this will change now that Moto is getting some limelight?
I am currently running a Tmobile USA branded HTC one that I have s-off and fully converted to GPE when 4.4 was announced with the n5. I am still waiting patiently for the OTA and just curious as to why Google is holding on to it when Moto X is getting theirs and has no issues, as well as N4 and other nexus devices.
Same story for me. T-Mobile converted to GPe to give KitKat a try since my Nexus 4 screen is broken. At this point I'm expecting the Developer Edition to be on 4.4 before the GPe so I'll probably be converting back to Dev Edition next week.

To me converting a Sense version 5 or 5.5 to GPE is taking 2 steps backwards. You have in essence turned a Porsche into a VW. I have a HP Touchpad that runs Cyanogen 10.2 and it's just plain and ugly, functional yes but with the stock launcher it's just too plain. My Wife has an HTC First that has the Facebook Home shut off so it's plain android and again it's functional but nothing special. I've had my One since Release and theirs just no way I would give up all the features that HTC has put into the Sense Experience (minus the AT&T Bloat ) I have run CleanRom, ARHD, and now InsertCoin and this is by far the Greatest Phone I have ever owned. Rock On HTC !!

That's why I love this phone so much. I loved sensed 5 when I got it. I converted then I changed back because I missed the features. Once Tmobile finally rolled out the 4.3 update I realized that it didn't make a difference. I had the power to get what I wanted out of the phone . so I fully converted when I saw htc had released their update schedule. In hindsight I could have waited until it was officially out. I guess I got duped by the 15 day delivery period. Still htc has some balls these days trying to climb to the top.

I converted to GPE a couple of days ago but i'm now back on sense. I used to be one of those who flashed aosp roms as soon as i got a new phone but the table has turned.... The Htc One with sense 5 is awesome. Everything is super smooth out of the box and i mean phone and software I will convert to DE next week for the sense kit kat update A big :good: to HTC for the work they done on Sense 5...keep it up.
As soon as I got my SaskTel (BM__01) phone I converted it to GPE and haven't looked back since. I found sense too dull looking. I'm currently on the latest 4.3 with the google experience launcher and it's perfect.
Originally my plan was to run CM 10.2 but I never got around to installing it. I've been following development for a long time and it seems to be going down the same road as the galaxy s2 did. Little annoying problems that will never be fixed.

I am not able to run a ge Rom... It messes up my lte no matter if I flash firmwares or anything. (Tmo btw) on stock firmware I get excellent reception as if I flash ge &firmware I get barely a line of reception and I'm stuck with almost edge speeds until it decides to go down to hspa+ so for me until I find out why, I'm stuck with sense. I did run a ge Rom for a day and besides the network problems, is awesome, I love it.

I converted mainly for the fast updates (f ewe Google BTW). My plan was to run stock as long as they pushed them out then consider a custom ROM once those dried up.
I've been running gpe about 2 months and love it. Not really missing sense asides camera which for me isn't a deal breaker anyway.
I run a custom launcher and use Tasker to make functional tweaks. Happy with what I've got at the moment but Google are dulling the experience at the moment.
Anyone got a link to a DE conversion thread? If HTC land 4.4 on DE before GPE it may become an option.
BTW HTC make that happen and make Google look like real clowns. Plus you can stick your Motto X.

Running a stock 'real' unmolested One GPE and very happy.
I previously had a work supplied One, with Sense. While I do not dislike Sense, I find little use for most of it's features.
i'm running a real GPE one and proud of it. patiently waiting for kitkat as well. did it bother me the ota isnt pushed out yet?? yes but to say the least im happy its still gunna get the update..i for one would rather wait a few to have a good solid build rather than a buggy one..reguardless of what htc did or say..im just happy its getting updated. remember "nexus like" experience this isnt a nexus so of course its gunna lag behind with updates..
truth be told i mainly purchased this device for 2 reasons STOCK ANDROID and REMARKABLE HTC BUILD QUALITY.
evryone can get mad at google or htc and whine about it but thats not going to help push it out faster..also i've been noticing a handful of people dropping this phone real or converted just because the moto x has kitkat..and moviing on to that.
i came from a nexus 4 and honestly this phone runs circles around the nexus perfect size weight build quality and stock android.

The Moto G will get done if a few developers decide to do so. The best thing is to have an unofficial port first of all then polish it up so it doesn't rely on ugly hacks and a fully functional rom can be built using the CyanogenMod repo. Then it can be submitted to the CyanogenMod team for evaluation. If it passes then it could be official.
So developers, let's be having you!

Yep, Omni looks very promising. Saying this as a long-time CM fan.
Important thing is that we can see a couple of first-class devs flocking here.
I'd rather have OmniROM but the more the merrier.
Voted as well, i'm getting a G next week so Cyanogen support is welcome even if i won't flash it others will.

Should I return my G Pad?

Merry Christmas everyone. Well my wife went out and bought be a G pad. While I'm extremely appreciative of her doing this, I didn't really want her to get me one at full price. I mentioned that I wanted one when it was only $300 at Best Buy. I guess I have no issue with keeping it but I just want to know the chances of this thing running stock Android. Is there a chance that this tablet could run a stock Android rom and get OTA updates? I'm over trying to mess with custom roms because they are always terrible and never work as well as stock.
If she paid full price then my suggestion would be to return it and get the GPE version if you want to run stock android. You might want to discuss this option with her to see how she feels about it if you're worried about her feeling hurt.

In my galaxy tab 2 cyanogen works 100 times better than its stock android as it doesnt have all the useless bloatware and frees up ram and memory. Stock firmwarein gpad runs just fine, especially if you have other android devices or a lg televison as it comes with usefull apps that only lg delivers. I dont find a reason to return gpad as it's the best tablet at the moment.

The LG os is just ok. Not so bloated like TouchWiz roms and if you uninstall some bloat you just will be OK with it.
I prefer much the lg version instead of stock android because I have a smart tv (Samsung by the way) and miracast works flawless.
I don't like stock android much, the LG keyboard is awesome!
I tried paranoid android and other 4.4.2 ROM and cm and I can tell you that they all loose much against stock firmware.
Only to give you an idea my cleaned stock ROM as 24 k antutu points and other 3 aosp based are in range from 17 to 21k!

I've used CM on phones with mixed results. I'm just getting to the point in my life where I can't be f'ing with Android roms. I want it clean and working.

I'm the opinion that cm is good for old devices that are forgotten. I never get better working device nor with aosp or cm. You miss all ways something and to get a stable release you need a year. I've s2 and the good working cm ROM is from last year.

I just discovered the LG G Pad like three minutes ago. It looks pretty good for some future plans I have with using a tablet as a car stereo interface. Damn good, actually.
Anyways, I have an AT&T Galaxy S4. As you may or may not know, there is also a Google Play Edition S4 out there. And naturally, the ROM for that phone was ported over to the Euro version of the S4 which we are able to flash on the AT&T S4 (with an AT&T custom kernel).
And the Google Play Edition ROM I ran was 99.99% stock and 100% rock solid. I would not hesitate for a second to flash that ROM again if I weren't a big fan of AOSP.
So, if this can be done for the S4, then I would assume you can flash the Google Play Edition G Pad ROM onto your regular 'ol G Pad at some point when the dev's port it over.

The s4 is not the Europe version but the international version gt 9505.
In Samsung devices is easier because you have open bootloaders.
And the matter that makes the possibility to convert is if there are many hardware and partition differences.
To tell you the true and going off topic the s4 as many problems with reboots and stability with the ge port.
I've Tryed myself 3 or 4 times and gone back to TouchWiz. Battery drains, reboots and much more. I think the issue was been kernel releated.
Cheers

Number one, just be happy with what you've got, you sound really pathetic. Number two, our custom ROMs are daily drivers and work better than LGs stock ROM. Number three, conversion to GPE is at a stand still, so it's impossible at the moment to get OTAs from anything but LG.
I'm a huge fan of CM. The nightlies may have minor bugs here or there but it generally makes a huge difference in performance to the phones I've installed it on. This is probably because its a newer version of Android - I installed CM7 on a Froyo phone and CM9 on a gingerbread phone. Even CM10 is better on a JB device. Much smoother with less lag and obviously stripped of bloatware.

If it's the difference in cost, Newegg has the Tablet for $299.99 Right Now... I was able to purchase my G-Pad on that event Saturday at BB for the cost of $279.00.. yes, it was a great deal.
I would think long and hard about going back to a 7" Tablet after owning an 8.3" Tablet.. And don't forget, you can Root the Tablet you have in a few minutes.. (It took me 2 Minutes) and maintain all the stability of Stock and Freeze or better yet, Uninstall all the apps you feel are Bloatware.. The Best of Both Worlds.. I'm running Mahdi right now and it's 100% stable and very smooth..

not all GS4's are equal as the att s4 is also in the same place as the g pad, it needs to be lokified as well, and actually the gpe port was not as bad (at least on the att cooked version) as you make it out to be, myself going to beanstalk with it being stable (not rock stable) but most of the time stable
otherwise like the dev mention it should be something silly being the reason why not everything works on the gpe, looking over the gpe (as it doesn't have the gpu problems all the other roms have) it does have a different file structure, but it shouldn't be impossible to bring it up

Yeah.. Newegg had them at the time for $249.99 shipped.. but I wanted to pay the $30.00 extra for 2 reasons.. 1) If anything was not right, I could just walk it in to BestBuy the same day and get a replacement.. 2) The return window was over 30 days.. I purchased the 1st week of December and have until January 15th to return/replace it if need be or the Mysterious Nexus 10 2014 should pop up in that time frame and be something REALLY special..
For the moment.. This is the Hottest Ticket on the Planet.
