GEL (Google Experience Launcher) and 4.4 - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Where is it for Nexus 7 2013? Will it be in the factory build? Is it going to be available for download separately from the store?
I find it odd that with all of the push to eliminate fragmentation it's not included.

Google Experience Launcher was intended to be Nexus 5 specific. It will not be included in official Nexus 7 images.

Who cares what google search comes back with? Guessing/speculation/your mom talking about cats. The reason I posted here is because people who tend to know what they're doing come to xda for news/know-how.
Is the missing launcher really a bi-product of optimization and the always listening feature? Or is the GEL launcher going to be available on the store? Maybe you don't know but that doesn't mean that a developer or somebody else doesn't know.

Yeah. God forbid you should do a little research on your own. That's why everyone comes here, to spoon feed you information so you don't have to look it up yourself.
BTW: It was bing search. I thought it was quite witty to use bing to search for information about Google. I guess I'm not as funny as I thought I was.

Despite the reputation that xda has for people who know what they're talking about there's still you. Research would imply that there is information elsewhere that:
A. I care about.
B. exists.
4.4 for Nexus 7 2013 is a few hours old. I already said I don't care about speculation. Stop being an ass. The first thing I did was google this and when nothing was found I started a post. Did you do any research before you posted that link? Read the first four pages of results. Read the first 100 pages of results. There's no links to statements from google or any developer anywhere that has looked into anything. Instead there's a bunch of people who all regurgitate information, whether cited or not from The Verge, who also don't cite a source. They just say vaguely that Google told them. Right... because Google talks to The Verge and The Verge exclusively.
Let me change the question for you. Don't answer it. It's clear you're just a moron. This is for somebody else.
Is there really a hardware reason to exclude the Google Experience Launcher? Does anybody know if GEL really uses anything from the 800 or is Google just running a trial on the N5 users?
In addition, has anybody seen whether or not somebody has tried to take the apk from a Nexus 5 and run it on a Nexus 7?

So you're a moron and a liar? There's no statement from Google about it or you would have posted it. There's no information about whether or not the speculated functionality of the snapdragon 800 is really required for GEL's always listening either. You didn't find anything in Google (or Bing. I thought you were just being stupid).
If you found anything... anything at all, post it. I will take even your information gladly.

Those first builds of 4.4 that came around when the Nexus 5 was launched actually had the whole GEL. the only problem was the keyboard would pop up when you went back to the homescreen, but other than that, it was working fine, so the only reason I can see as to why they would have left it out of the tablet would be to give the Nexus 5 some more bullet points on its feature list than other products out there.

Interesting. So... chances are we'll have a unofficial version floating around in no-time. Did you have any hands on with those first builds? Did the always on functionality seem to impact battery life adversely? Thanks in advance!

I find it very troubling too. Especially when we didn't get the new look either. Nothing a little Nova Beta can't fix!

I didn't take any time to tear into the build and tinker with it, but if there was any battery impact, it was too small to notice. I was still getting days of use. Even though the keyboard thing wasn't fixed in that build, maybe now that official builds are out and about, it can be fixed and sideloaded. I mean, all it was was a install of Google Play Services, the Launcher and the latest Google Search. Hopefully it won't be too hard to package those up and have them working soon.

There's already unofficial builds running around. I'm running it on my N7 with 4.4 right now. Still has the keyboard bug though.
All I had to do was install the launcher APK from Android Police and boom, GEL.

As far as aesthetics go, no, changing the color of the notification bar text and icons wasn't enough. At all. Considering we didn't get the transparent notification bar or the new app drawer icon. I'm getting my fix of those two with Nova Beta though. Gets me all of those things, plus it's pretty stable.

Yeah I was more being sarcastic. Even though I was more looking forward to just having a bit more stability in everything I use the tablet for, I can't say I wasn't a little bit disappointed not having a very obvious "New Update Day!" feature to have fun with. And if Action Launcher wasn't the most overpowered launcher out there, I might use Nova. I just can't get over that Quick Panel. its too useful

The android market is going to HELL

Hi guys,
Have you noticed a huge increase in spam apps in the market lately? Apps from developers like Michael Quach, Virtualtechs or Simpaddico, which literally count in the hundreds even though they really are the same app: a list of facts or quotes, with next / back buttons.
Apparently they also batch upload new versions of their apps regularly, just to get them to the top again. I'm getting sick of missing actual, useful apps because every time I check the market I only see these apps. Isn't there something we users can do to get rid of market spammers?
Proabably
There should be a "REPORT" button, right now its not a whole bunch of chronic spammer devies, they can get rid of them right away. BUNCH OF them are just scammers tryin' to make a quick buck.

The problem is, taken independently those apps are not reportable. There is nothing wrong with a facts app, but there is with a developer releasing 100 of them. Yet I cannot report the developer, I can only report the app.
the biggest problem for me is the lack of search options in the market - unbelievable that google could leave it like that - there seems to be no intelligent search, no search by category or dev etc etc etc
Sorting options

Spam their email like they do our market
There does need to be some method whereby Google get notified if one developer uploads more than, say, 5 apps or they upload several at the same time and then someone at google has to physically examine them before they go up. That way these spam apps would be identifed as such and not turn up there.
I guess ultimately this is the price we pay for having an unrestricted market. At the moment it is still worth it to get the kinds of app that Apple would never allow but I think SOME control is needed.
This is where Apple's "managed" Store has it's benefits.
I would love to see a market proxy for rooted phones, allowing various developers and app categories to be removed from view. Regex pattern matching ...
I don't know if it's possible, but it would rock.

Actually, I think these scammers/spammers/out-for-the-money people are NOT the problem...And in fact, they're actually a show of proof of just how open-ended the Android Market is.
The problem is that Google (The Internet Search Superpower) has crappy searching/filtering for their Android Market.
Ironic.

qft. all they need to do is add filters like ratings, downloads, etc. Then these apps wouldn't be a problem.

Exactly. The 'legit' devs should be pushing for this as well as it would make it easier for end users to find and buy quality product.
This is the exact reason why my Nexus One sat in its box for a week after receiving it. This is my first Android phone and coming from an Apple OS and a regulated app platform since the 2g was introduced, the marketplace had a very bad first impression with me. My N1 was bone stock and I experienced force closes on stock apps..I felt as if I was beta testing a device that was released too early. It was packed and ready to ship back. Then I decided to take another look and while 95% of the marketplace apps are pure garbage, IMO, the phone itself has its advantages which is why I choose the N1 as choice device as opposed to my 3gs in which I basically use as an ipod "with benefits."
Final thought. If the android market app regulation doesnt improve, it will fall..and it will fall hard.

This is a problem, and I do think Google should priorities this A.S.A.P. As this will discourage most Iphone to Android users. I don't even look in the new tab any more.
its not like google knows a thing or two about how searching should be done....

Market Issues 2.3.1 - Get your act together Google!

Well first, the new Market isn't on our Nexus S yet (officially), that's fine, it's just a UI update pretty much.
Now more seriously and more annoying, Google pushed out 2.3.1, that's great! BUT:
Whether you're rooted or not, there are missing apps on the Market because of 2.3.1
Some of the apps I use that I can no longer download from the Market are:
aFile, Fandango Movies, NYTimes for Android, PayPal, FiOS Mobile Remote
These are big apps, no reason they shouldn't be available.
I guess the issue is Google needs to input/enter/update their Market to "support" the new build of 2.3.1. ARE YOU F'ING SERIOUS? You just pushed the damn thing and don't remember to update your Market with the new build??
GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER GOOGLE! This is frustrating!
EDIT: ALL Copy Protected Apps do NOT show up in the Market on Android 2.3.1
Please go here and STAR the issue: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13514
EDIT: 1/5/2011-IT'S FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+1 i can confirm this

Have you tried editing your build.prop file to change the version fingerprint? I know this has been used in the past to restore "missing" apps to the market.

Well, I disagree with your assessment in terms of the Market.
It's ridiculous that Google's flagship device with it's flagship version of the OS, sold to the masses through a big-box store like Best Buy should have something as basic as the build number not being recognized and excluding you from apps that should be available to you.
Such a small thing to take care of on their server end, yet overlooked. Just another one of those little things that a certain other mobile OS operator doesn't overlook that makes the rabid fanbois of it froth at the mouth and pant how much better their OS is.
Fed Up but glad others are in the same boat
I am glad that i came across your posts. I was about to throw the stupid phone out the window. I had to exchange my Nexus S today at Best Buy (still running 2.3). When i came out with my new phone, it prompted me to update to 2.3.1. I did the update and after I was done setting up my phone, I noticed that there are apps THAT I PAID FOR that are missing from the Market.
I am sorry, but whether this is a new phone, developer phone, I paid top dollar and I would expect that something as simple as ensuring that the apps that i PAID for our available seems pretty straightforward.
Until they straighten their stuff out, I am pulling my SIM and going back to MT4G.
Everyone calm down, they will show up in the coming days. The day that the Nexus S came out I couldn't find some apps, like NYT. But it showed up the next day or two.
Not too sure why people are complaining here. You bought a google development phone so you get updates long before other phones get them. Along with that, come issue, bugs, ...time waiting for 'others' to catch up.
By 'others' I mean, the people, companies, ect who release their apps. Surely google doesn't micromanage what apps work for what versions of Android. Or which ones show up on the market depending on your Android build, phone, or cell phone provider. My guess would be that is all in the app developers hands.
Either wait, or go about getting them on your phone another way. After all, you bought a google development phone, a pre-requisite for owning one should be wanting to tinker around with it. As said, you could probably get them to show up if you edit your prop-build. This happens at every new android build release....

Well you know what? Go ahead and update to 2.3.1 and you will have issues downloading apps from the Market, that was previously there. That's the point of this thread, and it's a valid one.
Yes you can go ahead and edit your build.prop, revert your rom, etc..etc.. but the FACT of the matter is, 2.3.1 DOES have Market issues.
I do have a right to ***** about this issue, because it's a simple issue for Google to fix and too stupid for them to overlook.
And for the other people saying "you bought a developer phone, you should expect issues and problems".. actually no, I don't expect that. It's sold to the general public through Best Buy at a retail location. I expect it to work properly. If suddenly tomorrow there's a 2.3.1 update and you can't make any phone calls, I can bet you all will be *****ing about it. And this Market issue is exactly the same.
I changed the fingerprint in the build.prop to show as it is the older 2.3.
I don't understand why Google is releasing an update before it allows it fully in the Market....
Attached is the build.prop i used.
It is from GRH78 only have the fingerprint of GRH55.
The ONLY line i changed in this build.prop is:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3/GRH55/79397:user/release-keys
The GRH78 fingerprint is:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3.1/GRH78/85442:user/release-keys
You cash push the attached build.prop into /system (make sure you keep the correct permissions), reboot the device and the market should be fine.
Once Google update the market you can change it back.
Also if you change your build.prop down to 2.3 you'll get notifications on a 2.3.1 firmware update <facepalm>
Just change the fingerprint in your build.prop, download your apps, and change it back. Either that or wait for the app developers to update their apps, there's nothing wrong with the market.

Google free rom????

Hello.
I am interested in a highly secure Rom for the evo. I would like it to be free of Google or anyother corporately monitored system. real opensource experience free of all this monitoring and tracking and data minning. Maybe with a nice user friendly firewall for all connections. how about built in 512 bit encryption. For private txt messaging.
Let's hear from the community on this.
I may be wrong but... Evo is an Android phone... Android = Google. I don't think you'll have much luck getting a Google free Android phone.

Umm don't listen to anyone who previously posted. You could easily use CyanogenMod with out Google apps to do this. You would be missing the market and any standard app that has the word Google before it like Google maps, but I guess now you could use the Amazon market anyway.

Finally someone smart in this thread.
Any ASOP ROM which doesn't include GAPPS like cyanogyn mod or deck's ASOP rom will do this (minus the sms encryption) as long as you don't flash the GAPPS add ons or enable my location.
I really hate when people act like experts, but don't know what their talking about.
I don't think you're going to find this for the EVO, although I imagine there's a phone out there somewhere that you can accomplish this with.

When you say free of google what do u mean?? Evo runs android, android is created by Google. There is no way you could have android without Google. If you mean Google apps, as someone else said just run cyanogenmod without GAPPS. You wont be able to do much, won't even be able to load apps that aren't preinstalled.

It wouldn't be anymore secure than the current version of Android being ran (which he mentioned and is apparently worried about).. but as far as all the 'monitoring and tracking' and what not, I mean, sure. But what would be the point? Seems like a pretty half assed Android experience.
There is only so much that can be done without the use of, say, GApps ... might get the job done but would essentially kill the idea of even owning said phone.

Obviously the OS is made by Google, but I don't think that's what he meant. I think he means a rom which won't constantly sync with google's servers.
Also, you CAN sideload apps without market or GAPPS installed, the trick is just to find the .apk files somewhere other than google market, but most are on either amazon market or Edit, so again another WRONG piece of info given out here.

Although I wouldn't do it myself, I can see the point. You would have way better battery life without the constant syncing. Also takes much less ram. Not everyone cares about sync with gmail, contacts, and calendar. Some just want a nice smooth OS. It would be more secure, because everything wouldn't go through google's servers.

Seriously? This is like asking for the competitor iPhone and not wanting Apple to make it. If you didn't want a Google phone then why did you buy a phone with software developed by Google? Please don't tell me you Yahoo'd your phone. That would just be an Epic Fail!

Actually it's more like having an iphone and not paying for mobile me. But in this case it's a better situation because you wouldn't have to register with google to get the apps (get them somewhere else as I suggested previously), like you would have to with apple.

I get the 'tracking' and what not ... but no one is really 'tracking' you. Recorded, maybe. But what does that even really matter in the end?
I get that you want to point out that it can be done, and others were wrong, but it was a silly question none the less.
And, sure, of course - less RAM. And no syncing? Could always disable. But freeing up RAM and what not? Running a smooth experience? It's not going to be that much smoother than should you elect to NOT use proprietary apps. It's not going to be a 'night and day' thing.
I'm more or less curious what the OP wants to do with his phone. Yeah, getting apps from other avenues is always a possibility ... sure. But getting apps from outside of the Market isn't going to offer less system stability, or smoothness, as opposed to getting them from the market.
Sure, I suppose it could be done ... but what are you trying to do? And, as said, it's only as secure as the latest version of Android ... which is constantly facing security issues.
It was sort of a silly post. Gotta admit that much.

Nexus 6P Update (Google Assistant , Pixel Features)

Hey guys.
Just heard that Google is actually releasing the Google Assistant to some devices , including the 6P , through the Google play services.
Seems like Google is giving us more Pixel Features , so first the dialler and messaging apps and stuff like that , now we're getting the assistant.
Does anyone know when we are going to get it ? (Heard something like next week)
And does anyone know what Google is actually doing , are they going to give us the pixel launcher , the blue accents , the solid navigation buttons? Let me know is you know anything about this. Thanks !! ✌?✌?✌?

But does it cause you any harm?
No it doesn't, very little does, but there are rules in place for a reason, so we don't have anarchy with people posting wherever they feel like. However, the next time someone comments that you posted in the wrong section, maybe realise that it's not an attack or an insult to your intelligence but rather simply pointing out that you did something you shouldn't have and helping by passing along the information instead of trying, and subsequently failing, to be a smartass. If I had reported the thread or had it deleted then you'd have a right to be upset if even if I said you were stupid or negligent then again you'd have the right but alas no, but I'll be sure to point it out to you next time.
Goodnight gentlemen.

Post has been reported to facilitate transfer to the correct thread. No need to start any arguments. So chill
@op The Voice Assistant update is a staged roll-out, meaning more and more users will get it within the next few days. No one really knows the full extent of Google's plans for bringing pixel features to other devices like the Nexus line. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
All I can say is that such initiatives are welcome, especially if the changes are not merely cosmetic in nature, but instead add useful features to our device.
So yeah ... Did anyone get the assistant during the week ?

Sadly I got it. Now trying to figure out how to permanently get rid of it. Still can't figure out what is useful about GA. Sort of like Google Inbox - terrible idea with terrible implementation.

Oreo 8.1 rom Ok Google function.

Hi
As most of us all know that oreo roms are stable and giving good results.but all roms lack Ok Google feature when screen is off.and no one seems to fix it i wonder is it because its difficult or simply because people don't find it compelling enough.
What if i wanted to fix this issue? What would be a good start in the right direction?
Also if any one knows or has info that can help please share.
Thanks

My Moto Z Play on 7.1.1 does not have "OK Google" with screen off and it's completely stock. Is there an example of a phone with "OK Google" working with the screen off?

Bro almost all nexus phones have this functionality to activate Ok Google from screen off. I do not know about other manufacturers though but i think it can be turned on in most phones via voice or assistant settings.

I haven't fixed it for LineageOS, because I didn't know where to start.
Additionaly it's not very important for me.

I know this isn't very helpful, but I really don't know what changed with O and why it isn't working any more.
Perhaps you can start to find out why shamu's custom TriggerTraining.apk isn't launched anymore like it used to be on N.

You see i am no developer, but i see your statement gives hints and certain clues to what to look for. ?
I searched and found a thread on xda from 2016 , Op was suggesting to modify build.prop via text editor , so changed device name to pixel xl , finally rebooted
AAAaanddddd
It didn't worked ?
Back to more searching,

Can i ask you something?
All the devs who put out such ROMs can't they just debug or know where code requires modification.??
Also do you know a coder or dev that you think has a chance of doing it.
Thanks

I don't know what you think who those devs are. I did the oreo bringup for shamu, but I am a hardware developer and my software skills are very limited.
Additionally all devs do it in their free time and for fun. If a feature is not implemented or not fixed then there is a high chance that nobody is interested or able to fix it.
If you want it working then you should learn to debug and to code.

Bro i meant no disrespect to any dev who do such work, i appreciate their hard work . I also realize that they take special time to do such work.I didn't knew much about how its all done. But since you explained, i thank you.
And i think as you mentioned i will look into it myself. :good:
Today i used nokia 6.1 with Android Oreo 8.1 , i checked its assistant and to my surprise it too did not supported ok Google function with screen off.
So my guess is that its more of an Android 8.1 change , they have limited this functionality to certain phones.
This means it is not a bug, and needs some custom coding or programming/modification to make it work again .
Well i think i am isolated but i shall continue to find what ever i can and post .
I read on Reddit post of this problem and a user posted build prop trick where one tricks the Nexus 6 into thinking its a pixel device.
I tried but it didn't worked and also camera app crashed too. Voice match remains greyd out , it did how ever at first showed sign that its working but nope upon real testing it failed.
I then tried switching name to nexus 6p and it enabled one option which was previously greyd out, it allowed me to record and voice and asked for pin to use voice match but then disabled 'use ok google from any screen' option. .... and camera was not working too..
Is it the right direction? perhaps..perhaps not.
Update:
This issue is definitely from Google's server side, the voice match issue is not present on nexus 5 and nexus 7 tablet. here is a thread of ongoing discussion.

I think Google decided to ditch ok Google screen off functionality altogether from Nexus 6. There tech team never responded to the complaints mad by users. So it's kinda dead now.

I've been looking for a solution to this. I spent a weekend last month flashing various 8.1 and 7.1.X roms and trying to renable it. Same story every time. Apparently Google's just decided we don't get to use this feature anymore. I'm gonna start playing with other assistants (Cortana, Alexa, Hound, Autovoice) and see if any work like we want Assistant to.

I wish you best of luck bro . ?
Has anyone tried this on a 100% stock, unrooted device? I got Google One for being a good Local Guide, and Google Customer Support says root may cause this. I'm going to try Magisk Hide and report back.
