[Q] Telus Note 3 SM-N900W8 APNs greyed out, how to modify and change default? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Telus Galaxy Note 3 N900W8. It has APN settings by default for sp.telus.com, which are all greyed out.
It has isp.telus.com, which I want to use (I'm using a data-only plan/sim card), but I cannot select it.
I added a new APN and replicated the isp.telus.com, but apparently by looking at my billing I was started to get charged lots of money, and the new APN I added is gone (I'm assuming due to a reboot!).
I do not want to root my phablet, and I'm thinking of sending it back. Apparently rooting sets off a trip counter. Is rooting the phone the only way to fix my problem, actually most importantly, can I fix this default APN stuff and greyed out stuff if I root my phone?
Any help is appreciated

Had a similar issue on my SM-9005 - Can't edit the APN settings, when I add a new one, it vanishes after a short period. -- Thinking that the device reads the sim for data info directly and pulls from it? - however the mystery of the vanishing APN I have no clue about.

Still looking for a solution.. Let me describe my problem again:
So I have a Telus Galaxy Note 3 (I paid full price), and I got a tablet only plan from TELUS.
Problem is, when I put the SIM card in my phone, it defaults to sp.telus.com, and doesnt allow me to switch to isp.telus.com.
I have to manually add a new APN with isp.telus.com, or else im charged outrageous charges. Even worse, sometimes the new APN gets deleted and switches back to sp.telus.com ($$$$).
I unlocked my phone and put a bell SIM card in it, and it goes to pda.bell.ca (apparently the tablet only plan is on pda2.bell.ca, so im assuming i have to do the same thing).
Have anyone been through the same thing, any tips? Do i have to completely root my phone and put another ROM like cyanogenmod to solve this problem? (I dont really wanna lose all my S-Note features though..)
I looked for apps, and apparently no apn apps exist anymore.
At the very least i need a widget or something that writes my APN on the homescreen so i can verify if im on the wrong APN often.
Help!

you can try to use this code...
*#272*IMEI#
Replace the imei in red with your imei number of your phone.
As soon as you press dial, it will show you a selection of APN network. Look for the one you wish to use but... this will FACTORY RESET your Phone.
I had Telus and wanted to have Koodo for network... so I chose the koodo one and now every time I put the sims in it loads koodo network apn
Hope this helps...
Do some more reserch if you're not sure.

I'd be willing to reset my phone, but I can't get to that menu. It says USSD connecting then I get invalid connection MMI, tried many times and different ways. Did you do this on a Telus Note 3?

Yes... Bought a SM-N900W8 from TELUS which used the Telus APN...
TYPED IN the phone dial pad... *#272*000000000000000# (replace 0's with your IMEI number.)
You should then see a screen as shown below.
Just make sure you see the one you need before you do anything.

Cool thanks it worked! You just gave me a workaround. If i put the telus one, it still defaults to the Telus SP apn.. So im gonna install the bell one and manually add my telus ISP apn, that way ill never end up on sp.telus.com!
I think i might switch to bell data flex plan, only if it uses the default APN set (i think pda.bell.ca).. I just got to find out what apn their tablet flex plan uses

Happy to see that it helped you somehow.
Good idea to do it via Bell.
There is a way to add an APN to the script but I am not confident enough on a linux system.
I'm sure someone could show you how if possible, then it would show potentially on the *#272*# Code.

BELL LG Quantum owners!!! Help please

I had a Bell LG Quantum, but always had my heart set on a Focus. Now i have one and am having some issues with the profile setting on the bell network.
If someone won't mind, could you please either take a photo(preferred, more info) or post info from the following:
1.Go to the phone app
2.Dial ##634# and click Send
3.When prompted for a password type 277634#*#
4.You should now be at "Factory Menu"
5.Choose "Engineer Menu"
6.Choose "Other Setting"
7.Choose "view current profile"
In particular, i'm looking for which of the following APN is listed in the phone,
pda.bell.ca
or
inet.bell.ca
if you see either please let me know, and what it's listed beside,
Thanks so much.
from what I can read - what tiny print - it's referring to pda.bell.ca
it for sure pda.bell.ca just checked it now. I have a question, I bought this phone as an "unlocked" bell phone but I am a rogers customer. The phone functionality is working but I cannot get the data (3g) to work. What should I do, I assume I have to change this very setting. Please help!
Let me know if you need other information or the entire xml.
EDIT: I found a solution for making the Rogers data work.
Got into the above mentioned menu:
1) turned ADP on.
2) remove pda.bell.ca replaced it with internet.com
3g seems to work fine now !
However I don't get callerID from Bell customers anymore. Isn't that funny? What should I change to have caller id functional again?

Aha!! Someone else with the same problem! Finally!
I, too, have an unlocked Quantum, but mine's from AT&T and I have the same problem with inconsistent callerID's coming through. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with your phone though, since I also have an HTC Surround unlocked from Telus (now on Rogers) that has the same problem. And it's nothing wrong with your SIM card, since I guarantee putting that SIM in another, non-WP7 phone will have your caller-id working perfectly.
I haven't found any 'setting' to get this working, and as I say, it's inconsistent, with some landline phones working -- some not, some cell phones working -- most not. I'm still trying to chase this one down.
I think the call display function has something to do with name display. I believe I remember reading this in another thread somewhere.
I don't have name display on my account and I have 0 issues with caller ID
I'm using an unlocked AT&T Quantum.

Hmmmm, interesting.. I'll have to check on my account and see if I have Name Display.
When someone calls you, what do you see? Just the number of the caller?
Thanks.
If I don't have the number saved it shows the number.
By the way has anyone gotten mms to work?
I've tried googling and searching xda but can't seem to get it to work.
I have this same issue

My unlocked AT&T Quantum phone only uses 3G with Rogers and my sms times when received are always coming in with the incorrect time. I looked at the Bell unlocked Quantum and it has a different model# and firmware version, which makes me frustrated seeing as my friend's works fine with everything. What's the point of an unlocked phone if it can't use HSPA on another network? Is it possible to flash the phone to the Bell's firmware? I feel defeated

MMS Samsung Focus on Telus Network...

I bought a AT&T Samsung Focus for super cheap. I have the data running just fine and fast, however, it seems that MMS is a big pain in the butt. I can't get it to work at all. Anyone use Chevron WP7 in the past to get to the hidden MMS settings? I tried to load up ChevronWP7 but that it doesn't seem to work anymore either...
Samsung has updated its own Network profile tool in the market that allows you to set up the MMS settings. There is no need to hack your phone anymore.
I wish this was the case... however... I bought a phone which appears to still be "locked" to AT&T's network. The issue is the used phone may be connected to some kind of "AT&T" Contract? I got the ChevronWP7 NetProfile.xap to work but it's pretty much the same thing - just doesn't work.
yep something is still locked in the at&t focus. have one in new zealand and the samsung network profile tool only shows me the at&t profile to select from. MMS doesn't works for me either.
Alright this is not just me. The MMS APN is locked away somewhere... probably won't have the MMS unlock without some tweaking from the community for 10 months. Samsung has gone on file saying they were "protecting" AT&T and other providers.
Yeah, same here. Using my focus in Norway and everything works perfectly except for MMS (and of course the marketplace which we don't have over here yet).
Haven't been able to find a solution to this anywhere. MS is aware of this and says it's on their prio-list, but Samsung says that it's designed for use with a specific carrier.
Yes... I'm stuck here too without Chevron. Phone is unlocked (I paid for unlock code) but there is no FIDO network name to choose from for the MMS setting.

I got mine unlocked. I'm using it on Telus.
The only way I got chevron to work was after I had reformat windows. I reinstalled an older version of zune and it worked.
Not exactly the best solution but the only that worked for me.

pardon my ignorance, I have never used the function, but isn't there an "add apn" on the bottom of the cellular menu in settings? what does this do?

The APN is only for Data. MMS is actually a cell hone function (like SMS) and it seems without Chevron, there is no way to change the settings.

[HELP] No Signal!

Hi guys, I'm new to this part of XDA, mainly because I dont own a Wildfire & I'm posting this on behalf of my dad - to whom the phone belongs to. Anyway... Lets get down to business!
The Story:
- I recently went on holiday so I got my phone unlocked to any network. (It is still unrooted, branded etc just as it was on day one)
- While on holiday we got a local SIM so we wouldn't get bombarded with massive roaming charges
- Everything was fine and dandy on holiday
- When we got back to the airport back home the original SIM card was put back into the phone, but it wouldn't show any signal
The Problem:
If you went into "About phone" > "Network" the following is displayed
Operator name: Unknown
Signal strength: 0
Mobile network type: Unknown
Service state: Out of service
Roaming: Not roaming
But if you go into the testing menu it shows that there is signal and comes up ~-99asu or there abouts
But if I go into mobile network and try to select a network manually I just get "your sim card does not allow a connection to this network" and my lock screen displays "Limited service"
The Attempted Fix:
Here's a list of things I've tried to do to fix it with no avail:
- Changing SIM cards (every SIM doesn't work - even those that do work in other phones)
- Rebooting
- Factory resetting
- Turning radio off & on in hidden testing menu
- Shouting at it really loudly
- Changing WCDMA prefered thing (Does't do anything, just reverts back)
- Phoning up Three UK (Originally bought from)
They say they didn't do anythng to the phone i.e. Accidentally blacklist it
- Phoning up HTC
They say phone up Three - it's their problem
- Phoning up Three... Again!
They say go into a Three store and they'll diagnose the problem and try to fix it
- Going into a Three store
They say phone up the SIM card company I used abroad - No, really. They did say that!
- Phoning up random foreign SIM card company
It was a pain top finally get someone who spoke English, They told me to ask Three! AAAAAARRRGHHH
So basically, I thought i'd come to you guys for help. Have you any suggestions? Who should I pointlessly call next? Have you seen this problem before? Am I mad for trying this hald already? Is the phone just borked? Are all the network providers just idiots? Do I have any option other than to smash this into lots of tiny pieces and buy a new phone?
I still think it's one of the carriers faults for accidentally blacklisting it, but they wont listen. Is there anyway I can unblacklist it without going through the carriers. Is there any regulatory body that will help me in doing that (I'm in the UK)
Thank you very much XDA Community!
Did 3 check your apn settings where correct?
Normally a carrier will phone you back on a different phone line so you can check the settings are correct or you can find them via Google.
The apn settings are located in settings/wireless & networks/mobile network/access point names (I think that's the correct path)
I think after a factory reset it should ask which network (apn) you want to connect to, it did on mine. I got 3 options o2 prepay, o2 post pay or giffgaff.
Reason I ask is I didn't see any mention of apn in your post and this is important as you cannot connect to any carriers network if the apn is missing or wrong.

Hummmm... It looks like something is damaged. If the phone is covered by warranty, use it. If don't, you can always try to reflash the original firmware or rooting it and falsh a custom ROM.
This is all I can say. Hope you get an answer soon.

{Solved} XT907 Mobile Data Not Working!

I just got my XT907 today and ive been playing around with it. Got everything going smoothly except the mobile data. I had a mini sim which i cut down to micro sim size and it gets a GSM signal so i take it its working. I also got MMS working , thats another plus. Data on the other hand does not work at all.
Ive tried another proper micro sim from vodafone and after configuring the apn it worked. I cannot understand why Optus is not working. At first i thought maybe the data was not going to work for any carrier here, but since the voda worked im assuming :
a) My chip was not cut properly or b) Im typing the apn settings incorrectly (If someone has Optus -Aus APN please post it so i can compare) or C) Optus data is currently down.
Any advice or suggestions you can give me, would be greatly appreciated because id hate to sell the phone just because of this!!
Solved: Ok i got it working. Seems the Optus APN settings were wrong. Not from my end but from the website i got them from. Leaving the field 'APN Type' blank was the answer. I previosly had typed internet in there. So suprised that it was that little setting.

APN won't save - rooted i9505G

Hi all,
My Google Pixel has the microphone defect so it'll be going in for warranty repairs. So I took out the SIM from my Australian i9505G and put in the Japanese SIM from the Pixel (with an adapter micro -> mini). But I couldn't get a signal. I also couldn't save the APN details. (Selecting the menu button, then 'Save' did nothing).
Just to double check, I put the Australian SIM back in, it works as usual. I tried adding an APN with the Australian SIM still inside, but same error. I can't save any APNs. (As such, I doubt it's a Japanese vs Australian SIM problem).
This i9505G is rooted, but it was done so long ago that I can't remember what method I used. I'm pretty sure I kept the stock ROM and just removed a few apps that were bugging me. i don't have ClockWork Mod installed as far as I can tell (but I am a bit nooby, so maybe I've missed something obvious).
Any ideas on how I can get this thing to save APNs? Maybe I should upgrade the OS? It's currently on Jellybean, so some of my apps from the Pixel won't even install.
I dunno how helpful it is, but I'm in Japan. (I keep my Australian phone around for when I travel home to Australia.)
EDIT: I tried resetting the APN settings through the settings menu - no change
Hi,
Could it be that the phone is simlocked?
@LexHimself: No, because the I9505G was not sold through a carrier but by Google itself. Therefore, no carrier lock.
I noticed when I would change the MNC number, it would make the APN disappear. First try just naming the APN and saving it without changing anything else, then go back into it to continue editing.
