[Q] Privacy Guard or equivalent feature ? - Omni Q&A

Hi,
i read through multiple forums, Q&A and the google spreadsheet, but found nothing official regarding pricacy guard.
Is something like privacy guard planned for omni ? Maybe something more strict then the CM implementation.

it would be rad to see openpdroid involved @mateorod

I checked their gerrit. iirc the pull request goyt a thumbs down.

PDroid would be fine, but if pdroid will not be accepted, the CM privacy manager solution or something comparable would be fine, too.
If there is a concern about privacy management is a thing for experienced users and not for the "normal" users, then, maybe, a switch could be implemented to switch the whole thing on or off (default off).

I've never understood the need for a "privacy guard", if you don't trust software, why use it in the first place?

I like the official NFL app for some things. But I don't wanna give it GPS permission, for example.

From what I've read on the OmniROM webpage, and a few threads (as I'm browsing now), the point of it is that users can get the features they want added. This response kind of flies in the face of that. Now, my personal favorite is CM, but I always try new ROMs that sound interesting. Or if I can't get CM.
Privacy Guard is one of my must-have features of CM. Sure, I could just decide not to install anything that has a single questionable permission. However, that's actually pretty unfeasible in the current state of the industry and kind of cripples the possible uses of apps. Many apps require permissions they do not need. And we now know that despite the best efforts of companies, the NSA is stealing everything. Google themselves baked this very feature in to Android (though hid it in 4.4).
There are many points to be made in favor of Privacy Guard.

I don'think so, not at this point at least. But from http://omnirom.org/general/omnirom-2013-year-review/ :
We are excited for all that 2014 holds, and so we thought we would give you a little taste of what is in store, in no particular order:
Unique privacy and security features to help you fold your obligatory tin foil hat
Increased device support
Dancing penguins doing the “robot”
UI/UX Enhancements
Many more to come…

Also, while we wait, why don't you check out [MOD][XPOSED][4.0+] XPrivacy? Even while I was on CM11 with Privacy Guard, I still used that app. Has so much more to offer, imo.

That's a cool module but it's little too much sometimes. Sometimes I can't figure out exactly which permission is causing a force close.

Pretty simple (once you know how), but does take some work to getting all your apps working with it. Especially if you're just starting out and have to make 100+ apps work. Much easier on a fresh install, updating and using a few apps, then piece by piece installing and updating the Settings. Anyhow..
In XPrivacy, go to Settings, and check Expert Mode, and Android usage data. Restart. Then try and open your app. Let it FC. Then back into XPrivacy, select the app that FCed, Menu, Usage data. Now you can see what it last tried to access, and that's more than likely what caused the FC.
That, or grab a logcat and look at that.

Pro version is definitely nice. Install and pull app restrictions from the crowd sourced database.

Yeah I was trying to work with it as it was my only option on a locked Moto X but I went back to the N5 and now I have Privacy Guard again

Just go ahead and try OmniRom. It has a permission manager for a long time now, quite way to use too.

It's always been there. Settings > Apps Permissions.

OmniRom is awesome, and i'd really like to see something like Privacy Guard implemented in it.
PG's ability to prevent apps from accessing the internet is IRREPLACEABLE.

Remove "Call Settings"

I removed phone.apk and telephonyprovider.apk... How can I remove call settings from settings.apk?
CM7.1
Why do you want to do this? I know the Nook isn't a phone but some applications end up querying for call settings anyway and you are likely to cause problems.
There can also be areas where you may want to fake things like the Nook having a phone number as some apps use that as a verification key (e.g. Verizon Fios remote control).

I did this because I didn't want the phone icons or anything. When I go to the "call settings", in the settings app, it crashes. So naturally, its of no use to me. I don't use any apps that use a phone # as a key, I just want it gone.

Asking people why they want to do something is another question. Start your own thread and ask why someone would want to do that.
You would need a new settings app to remove the call settings. I also deleted all the telephony apps from my nook. No problems at all.

Just an fyi... Those are included in our encore/nc builds for compatibility reasons. Not just some apps, but market also needs these to run well. Other things like contacts app will act odd, too. You will find more headaches from removing them. Our cm Devs didn't leave them in there for S and Gs.
If your concern is battery, don't worry. They don't use any.

If you're feeling "removey" and anxious to get rid of excess apps, i relate and recommend this :
Get Titanium Backup on the market. This will let you see all installed apps and have the option to "freeze" one before uninstalling. You'll get to see how the nook functions without the app in question. If it freaks out, you can usually just go back in and unfreeze it.
The phone apk is definitely not a safe app to remove are you using the stock adw launcher?

Well... I dunno about that. I really see no reason for the dev's to leave in Camera.apk, MMS.apk, etc etc... I've removed the following, plus more with no negative side effects whatsoever. I've been running CM7 & CM7.1 since I first got my nook last May. I've even tried removing these on my phone just for "S&G's" and it didn't really have any negative side effects aside from my phone no longer functioning as a phone
Partial list of stock system apks removed:
Phone.apk - crashes at first, but a reboot solves any and all issues with that
MMS.apk
MMSProvider.apk
Telephonyprovider.apk
Protips.apk
Camera.apk
Thats as best as I can remember for now, I probably

It's not a virus. You probably installed an app that changed the settings for your search.
Open your search, then select the "settings" in the upper right corner. You can adjust your defaults search settings from there. Also might just see the app that changed it as well
Sorry. I thought the "A" in A500 indicated an Android tablet. It is Android, not Windows.
Funny...the concept of buying a Windows tablet is so unthinkable to me that it never occurred to me to consider that someone would think it was other than Android. LOL

Another thing you might try if you see some strange apps suddenly appear, or you get strange notifications, is go to the Market and install an "air push detector" app. Not neccessary to run it all the time, but on occassion.
Thanks for the tip! I will do that now. Still haven't found the offending app. Nasty little buggers.

Avast did not catch it. I use Avast on my desktop and my tablet. In any case, the problem is gone now that I fixed the search settings. Thanks!
Use AirPush Detector from market. It's free, light and looks for apps that for example put ads on your lower bar (the one with clock, wifi icon etc).

Yep...have done that. Thanks!
My Comment is late in this thread.. And im sure you have it resolved..
But here is what i do to catch crap..
go to the market get advanced task manager app. Its tiny app and can be turned off to not Run in the background.. Once you do that it will not take up cpu or memory .
once in a while start it up and look at the apps that are running in the background. In the apps settings you can tell it to auto kill certain apps. This feature can be good to trouble shoot and find apps that have evil programming attached to it.
I will add be careful what you kill with it. If you open a app like the above and keep killing or set apps that you DO USE to be killed you will be fighting the built in management in android. IF Apps are in there that you know your running. If those apps you are sure is not the issue . DO NOT KILL Them they are just setting static for the most part. Killing them will cause cpu spikes as they will just come right back . Use the above mentioned app ONLY AS A TOOL To find rogue apps. not as memory manager app. Android does a great job with doing that if the apps will play by the rules..
Just wanted to add this to the other GREAT Replies you received in this thread. I believe most of the others who have applied use this or a similar app to week at ROGUE APPS.
Good Luck..
Thanks erica_renee...I'll take a look at it. If it's too complicated though, I probably won't be able to figure out how to use it. LOL Many of these apps have no instructions. The devs assume we all know how to figure them out. Not so true. I see "reviews" all the time from people asking how to use these things.

Trouble installing 3rd party apps.

I'm trying to install some of the Humble Indie Bundle 6 games on my N4 and I'm running into a problem I've never faced before. The APK files download just fine, but when it comes to actually opening them to start the installation, it won't install. The button that says "install" does nothing when I press it. I checked in my security settings and "unknown sources" are allowed. I included screenshots of both these in the attached files. I even tried un-selecting the "verify apps" option, in case the humble bundle app had been removed from their white list for some reason, it still won't install.
I thought it might be a bug with the Humble Bundle beta app so I tried to uninstall and reinstall it, but it too is getting stuck on the installation. It downloads just fine but it won't install. I've tried rebooting my phone, still no luck. I'm on the latest Jelly Bean 4.2.2. Has anyone else been getting this problem, or does anyone have any idea on how I could fix it? I didn't pay much for the games but it sort of sucks to have bought them and be unable to play any of them like this.
I'd like to try with some more third party apps to see if it's all of them, or if it's just the Humble Bundle APKs that are causing me trouble (if it's the later I can probably contact Humble Bundle and ask them for assistance), but I'm not familiar with those. Could someone please recommend some good safe ones I can test out?
My humble bundle beta installed fine. So at least you know the app should work. Sorry can't help you more. Hopefully someone else has a solution. Silly question... have you tried rebooting?

are you running paranoid android? disable halo, or so ive read.
Any app that requires permission to draw over other apps can potentially cause what you're experiencing. Examples include but are not limited to:
- the HALO feature in PA ROMs
- Screen filter apps
- Other floating apps

Could any of that happen if I haven't rooted?
Also,
I've just tried to reinstall TubeMate, another third party app I like. It's APK also refuses to install, which probably means there's a problem with my phone and not just the Humble Bundle app. I'm starting to think I'll have to factory reset the phone, which is certainly do-able, just... not very fun.

Yes, this can happen without root access. I've seen your problem addressed several times in multiple forums and ALL of them is because of a floating app.
Look through your app list. Is there ANY app that, as a feature, floats on top of other apps?
Eg, Facebook Messenger, Screen Filter, Floating Stickies, AirCalc, etc
Just force stop them and you should be able to sideload apk's again.

The phone says 1.68 GB are free, but when I plug it into my desktop it tells me 1.57 GBs. So... somewhere between those two.
EDIT:
Found it... It was the Twilight app (no, not THAT Twilight... lol), it's an app that tints the whole screen a slight redish color so it doesn't hurt my eyes too much when I use the phone in the evening. That must count as a "floating". The moment I disabled that I was able to successfully install the APK. YOU SIR, ohyearar, have won a thanks.

[ROM] [CM10.1] OaT_LnT[July 25, 2013]

Background
This is a very light and tweaked version of CM10.1 along with a lightened and tweaked version of GApps. If you are familiar with my previous Light n Tasty (LnT) releases, you know what to expect, although as of late I am going even further. For example, I am not including the CM Browser or Calendar apps in the ROM as IMO there are much better 3rd party ones available in Google Play, generally for free. (I do encourage you to support the developer via a paid app if that is available.) LnT is ringing in at very svelte ~240MB, leaving ~73MB free in an unexpanded ROM partition via AcmeInstaller3, after flashing LnT_CM10.1 and LnT_GApps. With that kind of room, you could even consider applying AppstoROM if it were beneficial to your TP. The standard GApps should be able to be used with the ROM, if so desired. Updates to the ROM and GApps will be made as significant changes occur, or if I get bored and want to flash something new :silly: .
Flashing
Personally, coming from LnTTP_CM10, I just dirty flashed over it with no problems, using the latest (?) TWRP. If you are coming from another ROM, it is highly recommended that you do a full set of wipes before flashing the ROM. It is also recommended that GApps be concurrently flashed with the ROM.
Issues
The issues with LnT are the same as with other CM10.1 releases, which center around a non-working bluetooth. Presumably the camera has been enabled, but as I have never really used that capability in CM or WebOS, I have not verified that. In fact, no camera app is included in the ROM, so if one is interested in that feature, a working one would have to be found in Google Play or one 'extracted and installed' from a standard CM10.1 ROM. Finally, if one is having problems with sound cutting off when the display turns off, try switching bluetooth on. It will not stay on, but it does seem to fix the sound problem when the display turns off.
Acknowledgements
I'll use the 'trickle down' approach here, and personally thank milaq, whose git repository this build is based on. It then follows that I am indebted to the work of those he mentions who have specifically contributed in the development of CM for the TouchPad, and to the many others who make generic contributions to CM, and of course to Google and AOSP for providing open source, which without none of this could be accomplished.

System Add-Ons
Find your system add-ons to LnTTP here. They, of course, need to be placed in the system/apps directory, followed by setting the permissions appropriately, and then rebooting your TP. Since I don't use these I really can't verify if they work. Finally, if you are aware of a newer version, notify me and I will update here asap.
Been using this for a week, rock solid and very clean. I dirty flashed over his previous ROM using TWRP, along with the slimmed down Gapps. I am using Next browser and a calendar, both work well. There are 2 locations to set options. In Settings>>Security towards the very bottom you will see a toggle that sets the privacy option on in every new app installed. In Settings>>Apps, after you select an app, you will see a checkbox in the app information that turns the privacy option on for that app. With the option turned on, for example, apps will be told gps is off, whether in fact it is or not, thus protecting your location. Also, for example, apps seeking a list of contacts will be provided a false list. There are also a few other actions also done to protect your privacy from 'nosy' apps.

When I open a file that can be opened with multiple apps, I get the choice notification to pick an app, but there is no "only once" button like on my S4. I have to pick one and it gets stored as the default app and I never get the choice again. Anyone else seeing this?
Yes. Very annoying!!!!
Is this a touchwiz bug? Would you expect it to be fixed in an update?
I believe it is an Android Marshmallow "feature"
I hate it, but can't do a damn thing about it without root
Found the app "Better Open With". Not perfect, but does a good job and no root required.

Awesome! That app has fixed one of my top 5 problems about the S7!
Hotspot tethering I also got working, so 2 things crossed off my list
Next, I need to move my app data. I need root for Titanium, and the Samsung smart switch only moved over APKs and not their data from my S5. Looks like I need to use the Helium app now.
If you want a better chance at rooting sign this and pass it on
