[Q] New phone - Hardware Hacking General

Hi everyone
I’m new to this forum and forums in general so I hope I’m in the right place for my question.
I can upgrade my Galaxy S 3 in December and I was looking at the HTC One but my carrier keeps trying to talk me out of it and is trying to sell me on the Galaxy S 4 or the LG G2.
What I would like to know is witch phone you would choose and why and not just because of specs but also just personal reasons why you would pick the one over the other.
Thank you.

Go with the HTC One
I have tried Samsung and LG and I prefer HTC sense to all the other interfaces. HTC corporate is the only manufacturer I know of that provides support for unlocking the bootloader, etc. to promote open development.... like what takes place here. I was very pleased with my Evo3d, and HTC blew me away with the One, which I currently own. I have experienced issues with all other brands. Also, the custom rom selection is unbelievable. I am running ViperOne 3.1 and it is by far the best I have ever seen or used. Hope this helped.

Hi
I'm happy with HTC since as said bl unlocking is officially supported.
I don't like Samsung coz of preinstalled apps I didn't need. The other thing is their whole marketing strategy which I can't stand.
No experience with LG phones, but their DVD writer rocks @ almost cheapest price

hello
I prefer the HTC is a very good phone

Thank you very much you just made me make up my mind especially because of the boot loader and open development since that is exactly what I am wanting to start playing with.

Happy to help

Happy to help! One thing I didn't mention is I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the camera on the HTC One.....the new technology is astounding and the most important aspect of all the additional light (200x's more) allowed into the pixels is the shutter speed is almost instant, and low light shots are clear. You wont miss a shot an you can probably print 8 x 10 photos just fine. If you are rooting, check out the Viper Roms. I have tried a lot and found theirs are very stable and carry the most customizations.

Any Ex Nexus users?

I have a Nexus and love it! Debating on the HD2, even maybe keeping it as a secondary phone is it worth it? Or do you find yourself missing your Nexus?

missing it since day 1 with the HD2 keep the For at least a week and don't use you N1 and you will endup going back to it I'LL BET YOU ANYTHING!!! YOU WILL
haha LOL
had both nexus & hd2. was a tough decision. they both had their pros and cons. in the end i sold the nexus. what sold me on the hd2 was the hw. its simply a beautiful/fun phone. dont get me wrong, the nexus is awesome. i actually prefer android over wm but in the end it wasnt enough.
the one thing i still miss is all the apps from the android market. while imo alot of apps were "novelty" apps and not really useful to me, there was always an app that did what i needed it to do.
i believe the stock hd2 rom is "clunky" for lack of a better term. some of the cooked roms really make the ui fluid. right now preferring kumars
I think a lot of people went back to their N1 because of the simplicity of android and the apps and updates that are released to fix the bugs unlike for the HD2 and please no one mention cooked roms. As most people dont know how too install the ROMS....
I don't own either but played with both while trying to decide which I want. I have a G1 now and REALLY wanted a Nexus but I am on a family plan and Google has made getting the Nexus too difficult. I talked to the CSRs at TMo and even work arounds will be a giant pain because the plan we're on is a 'grandfathered' plan that isn't available anymore so as long as we don't change it we keep it.
I like the Android OS, I like knowing it will continue to be updated with new and improved releases. While most of the apps in the Market are crap there are a few I do use frequently and best of all 95% of those I use are free.
Sadly if I shelled out $500 for this phone my wife would castrate me.... as much as I want the Nexus I don't want to pay an arm, a leg and.... uhhhh... well, don't like the phone that much.
HD2 is a beautiful phone and I looked at the ROMs and would definitely flash one over the stock ROM. I had 2 WM phones and I do have fun tweaking it, setting it up only to do it all again when I flash something else but there were sooooo many things I hated about WM and I can't remember all the apps I used to use. There was one app that changed a setting and actually killed the app when I closed it rather than move it to the background where I had to go into task manager to kill it. Also have an issue knowing this is on an old and notoriously quirky kernel while only the UI has been updated. Essentially a dead OS that will receive very little in updates.... basically what we have now is pretty much it and up to the creative DEVs here to keep us going. How many more apps will be updated or created with WP7 coming out later this year and all the iphone 1.0/2.0 like features along with it?
Ultimately I think I may end up getting the HD2 and dealing with WM for a while until TMo gets a high end Android phone (Rumor about a Samsung Galaxy also going to TMo). After all the HD2 is amazing piece of hardware and I'll just have to deal with the shame of WM.
Well think it it this way how much would you save in the long run? Because any smartphone you get with a contract you have to add the 29.99 for 2 years times by 24= 700+ So i buy a phone outright and keep my Tzones save so much money in the long run. Also T-mobile Android phones boughtout right or not they do not work with Tzones you will have to switch. Nexus is the only android phone i know of that works with Tzones since its not T-mobile branded.

While it's probably true that (statistically speaking) most people do not know how to install cooked ROMs, it does make the HD2 a far better phone to use, and I consider it a critical part of the decision to purchase.
Most people who own a car do not know how to change the oil, but it still needs to be done. Most people who own a guitar do not know how to tune it, etc, etc.
it's an unfair limitation to suggest that the availability of cooked ROMs should not be factored into the decision making process, IMO.
How many people know outside of XDA what a ROM is? Seriously T-mobile should of dont more testing with this device before they sent it out with this buggy rom. I like this device a lot amazing hardware but hate the little bugs like when it jumps from E-3G and now my device freezes a lot. If i didnt buy this new from ebay i would of returned it and prob gone for the N1. And even the N1 has issues but atleast they sent out update to fix them. I wonder whats taking T-mobile so long? and since WP7 is around the corner i doubt an updates will be given if any at all..

I guess I am different from most people, in that when I decide to make ANY purchase over a certain amount of dollars, I'll research literally everything I can about the product for a considerable amount of time (depending on the cost) before buying it. The fact that everyone doesn't do this is partly to blame for the problems encountered by most users.
Many people go crazy and install everything they see from any source on their phone, and it acts funny... understandably so.
I'd definitely agree that HTC could and should have done a better job with some aspects of the stock ROM, but this is true of any phone manufacturer, and HTC is better than many others in this regard.
I ended up keeping the HD2 bcuz im hoping for an android rom. the hardware made me keep it. its really beautiful but android is much much better than windows mobile i miss android. I had to install a rom just to enjoy the HD2 if you don't know how to install roms i would suggest you learn if you plan on owning this phone. If not go for a nexus one.
it depends on what you want out of your phone.
you'd have to root the nexus one to save apps to sd card. while on the hd2, it already has apps 2 sd capability.
customization is actually higher on the hd2, but it takes A LOT more work. i find it much easier mod the stock android os BEFORE rooting. pick your poison.
in terms of hardware, the nexus one actually has a brighter screen due to AMOLED display while of course, the hd2 screen is a monster in terms of size vs. the n1.
if you really really are in love the android OS and want the screen size of the hd2, why not move over to sprint and get the htc EVO? almost the same hardware specs except the evo is actually better equipped with a front facing camera, hdmi input, etc..

Same here i'm waiting for an Android ROM, i hope its out during the summer or maybe when the EVO comes out it can speed up the process. But the hardware is amazing just wished there weren't so many issues with it..
Anyone if T-mobile or HTC release an software update or are making one?
I kept the Nexus anyway and just use it on the spare line.
I work for T-Mobile so I'm limited to T-Mobile phones, I would NEVER switch to Sprint no matter what phone they got. I use to have them and work for them and not a fan at all. I think i'm going to keep the Nexus One and wait for the Galaxy S. Thanks for the input, and yes my Nexus is rooted so flashing a HD2 shouldn't be to hard. IS there much of a difference rooting Android compared to Windows?
2 things that really turned me off about the HD2 is I heard Battery life only lasts half a day, and the Facebook app which I use A LOT doesn't give you ANY notifications. Also something I love about the Nexus is finding phone numbers I just search a company from the google search bar and it gives me numbers for that company in my location. On the HD2 you have to go to the browser and then do that unless maybe I'm mistaken?

Anyone else think MS and HTC have let us down?

It seems to me that wm6.x is a dying OS.
I love my hd2 but i am now becoming concerned that no one is developing for it, especially in the games department.
Even adobe have dropped flash support saying that wm6.x lacks the API's they need.
With no official wm7 upgrade, we will all be relying on clever people here to get wm7 or android on are HD2's
All in all I feel very disappointed. Anyone else feel the same way?

Yup, didn't expect the HD2 to get obsolete so fast especially considering the amount we paid for it. Really hoped HTC would do something to keep the HD2 feeling fresh during its 2 year lifespan, but they obviously don't care about costumer service at all.
As I understand it both Samsung and HTC are lacking in this department and then people wonder why people choose the iPhone over competing phones.
If it weren't for XDA I would have given up on WM much earlier.
HD2 is ,imho, a "business" platform which would have great gaming potential.
And yes, I agree that both MS and HTC seem not to care about existing customers - they have not understood the concept of doing "iBusiness". Means, understanding the own customers and offering products and solutions which are requested by those important stakeholders.
As the posting before mine mentioned, Samsung is not better at all - they never understood customers. And I know what I am talking about...
I think even if WP7 is going more into the "iBiz" direction, it will not really succeed the way Apple did. Android will fill there. But, you never know. MS will try to move some XBox success over to the mobile platform...
In the sum, I knew about all this when I bought my HD2. In the past, I rarely used any device for more than 2 years - in this case, probably summer 2011, with iPhone 5G and Android "3rd generation", I will take my next choice... until then, I am perfectly fine with my HD2, thanks to xda.

Yes i am afraid thats is true..you have been uber-mugged...Thank the god there is xda...and quite honestly, here you can find anything you could want(more or less) that MSFT or HTC would even sweat getting for their customers..HTC being the lesser of the 2 evil since they built this beat and beauty at the same time AND covering so effectively the visual hiddeousness of 6.x platform (visually wise)..You are not on your own, you have the greatest community ever by your side but fact remains , your purchase alone was a money drain (if you do exclude xda and take it as a winmo phone)
i bought hd2 few months ago knowing now what i ignored then about windows 6,.5 dying i would never have bought it but thanks to xda people they gave it the extra mile that was lacking and made it look way more beautiful ,like co0kies tabs, 3G switch in comm manager, and the most beautiful skins from diniks ,what else would you want ?
this sound awfull... cell phone brands leaving their customers on their own or leiving them to a community they dont control..... (don't miss understand me, XDA rocks)
But that kind of brand "policies"... S*ck
:\
Even a cheap chinese cell phone like "Ciphone" has it's own community to help users, give updates and apps. Cifans forum. I had the c6 and that community did a great job for me. HTC did a lot less...
Its true, I do love my HD2 very much, but if it wasn't for XDA Developers, I really would have gone for a android device instead. I am just pleased that custom ROMs, Cookie's Home Tab and MaxManila are doing so well. The reasons for not providing WP7 as an upgrade are quite poor and is something that HTC and MS can easily sort out together but are just deciding not to - I reckon anyway.

The main reason that they dont is that they have set very high gaming standards for the wp7 devices for the xbox live plans they got and snapdragon's fill rate is very low to fit their needs.

I can understand that. Fair enough, well now I am about to flash a new ROM, I really want to try messing with MaxManila's new interface. Yeah, the HD2 may never see a fully working WP7, but as long as I have the HD2 - I don't think I'll ever get bored of messing with WM6.5/6.5.3/etc, flashing ROMs, and so on. haha. Talking about the gaming standards, I am looking forward to what developers come up with.
This is true and I hate that no sites have had the balls to post about this fact. It's just something both companies I guess feel they DON'T have to take care of and don't feel it's any loss anger a few customers about this issue. The hardware issue is such bull**** in my opinion. This isn't the first time there were phones with different hardware. Simply make some apps for certain phones and obviously the higher end apps will support the higher end phones. The games has been a big issue, but nothing really to care about. FPSECE covers most of that. As far as XDA while I do love the site and it does develop a lot of new and unique things for the HD2 recently it's mostly been custom UIs that are just flooding the HD2 section.

snapdragon 1ghz cpu is the miniumum standard for Wp7 isnt it?
I would have thought the HD2 opengles was fast enough....oc better drivers
would help as chainfire has allready shown...xda to the rescue again
My point is this is the fastest cpu /phone ive ever used, its capable of far better games perfomance, but as winmo 6.5 phone its never going to see any
games such as gameloft ashphalt 5
There are several games out there that should be updated such as Cod2 and thps2, these would sell to the HD2 comunity and i doubt it would be that difficult or expensive for EA and the like to get these older tittles working

Have you used an xperia x2 lately? It is slow as a snail compared with the HD2.
It shouldn't be long until they (yes the xda gods) port us android. Windows is and will always be rubbish.
Look on the bright side, the EVO is coming so soooon.
HTC's total failure
not only HTC let us down but make us to feel as idiots that just financed their stupid OS selection by buying HD2. Personally i am wont participate in other their action, will trow away HTC HD2 (and just because the WM...otherwise i like it!) and will never ever buy another HTC product. For now the market is full with alternatives.
NO, because anyone who has done research before buying the phone would already know this. I did, and i bought it anyway, because xda will always help when ms and htc wont.
If you look through other HTC phone models on XDA, you will find that very often when the forum has come up with good ideas, and there has been a lot of interest in them, HTC (who read this forum), take it on board and add the idea to their official updates.
So if a large percentage of HD2 owners say they are dumping their HD2 phones, why should HTC bother with updates?
If you do not like your HD2 phone, or MS software, hard luck, don't complain to XDA. The forum did not twist your arm to buy it.
You would not buy a car or computer, without checking its performance first, so why buy a phone without checking its performance first.

I did my research there but I bought my HD2 when I read somewhere it can be upgraded to WP7. A few weeks after I bought it, well...the bad news came up.
I really like the looks and feel of the HD2 but I'm wishing HTC can give us end users an option which OS to use. I'd grab Android anytime. But hey, in a sense, MS let me down but not as much as HTC did.
ofc till xda is here and members have free time to solve problems occurring because of WM and HTC carelessness.
and pls can u explain here how u mek market research on usage of totally new phone on the market. (if u are in the 1st buyers list). i am just curious!
and still believe that companies must have responsibilities to their customers!

Will pure AOSP Froyo ROM ever be a reality on Samsung Galaxy S devices?

Im thinking of getting a Epic 4g when they are released but Im very hesitant on this because what I have read about Samsung devices being "locked down". First off I prefer AOSP over touch wiz or sense, and I hoping to see this possible on theses devices someday. From what I have seen this may come down to a driver issue as they are encrypted by Samsung. I also want to use Wifi Tether too. Id like anyone who knows about theses devices to shed some light on this and help me make a decision. I dont understand why manufactures feel they need to put crap onto of Android when is more usable with out it. I just wish Samsung they just gave us the option of either roms.

This contradicts what I read elsewhere for the better Ill see if I can locate where I read this at, If this is the case why is there no custom roms besides Cyanogenmod? Where is a AOSP roms at? Or is the device just that new nothing is out yet? If this is true Ill be getting the Epic over the Evo
Wifi tether comes with the device, and I have to say I haven't had any problems with its use so far

What nonsense
I'm a little confused about the situation with ROMs myself, coming from the Windows Mobile world. If the entire source to the build of Android on the Galaxy S is available, surely it's possible to change anything, theoretically? It also seems that the bootloader has no or negligible security as to what it can flash.
On the other hand, I've seen claims that it would be impossible to get Froyo or any future Android updates if Samsung don't release them first (I know they've committed to Froyo). Unless the driver model changes dramatically in Froyo, which I doubt since then new drivers would be required for every phone, why would it be any more difficult to port newer versions of Android to the Galaxy S than any other phone?

No, it's just that there are different components and layers which can be considered open or "locked down", and you both use different ones.
The bootloader for the samsung galaxy is not locked.
But there is an argument by the XDA forum member psychoace that some of the drivers for the galaxy S were not open sourced, and that in earlier android devices from samsung this made it very hard to create ROMs which are not based on Samsung's own ROMs.
As far as I know, this argument from psychoace was never countered, and so I see no reason not to believe it. (I did not look over the sources myself yet).
So can someone port new versions of Android over to the Galaxy S after Samsung has abandoned the device? I really don't know, but I wouldn't count on it, until someone who has experience with making custom ROMs says it is realistic.
The reason I state this is because other then the graphics, video playback, camera there is not much to shout about this device. The lagging is awful, it can't cope with multi tasking compared to say aswell the desire. The issue with the keyboard lagging. Internet crashing for no apparent reason. It seems as the samy gs cant handle the goodies packed into this device. No trackball, flash or led which is very useful.

as far as i understand it, the lagging issues are just because of the touchwiz and especially the samsung-widgets. removing the widgets and replacing the luncher with luncher-pro/adw will be the first thing i do when i have the device in my hands. on the other side: the hardware of the galaxy s is very good in my opinion!
@bookwormat:
i think you are wrong! i have read in some forums that samsung has released the drivers for 2.1 together with all other code! in fact i am just pulling the code (including the full kernel) from the samsung open source center (http://opensource.samsung.com/). it's huge, 148MB ... when it's finished i will give it a look an confirm what's in there and what not.
You might just want to take into consideration the fact that the Nexus and Desire had some problems as well right after launch.
The nexus took some time ( a couple of months) to set things straight, the Desire- A couple of weeks only. But it's understandable, since it's 95% identical to the nexus, so HTC probably knew what is going to be problematic.
Also, you're taking things to major extremes. You make it sound like the device is catastrophically slow to the level of being unuseable, and crashes every 2 minutes.
Reality, well, is different. The longest lag i had personally is 1.5 seconds when loading asphalt 5. Every other lag when opening an app- less than half a second.
I'd also like you to refrain from stating one personal problem as a bug in the device, you are the only known member in this forum that is having trouble with the keyboard.
A little search in MoDaCo forums reveals that some users are reporting slight problems with the keyboard, but it's limited to Firmware JG01 only.
It's sad that instead of taking a moment to see if you can solve these problems or helping others find a solution, you preffer to bash the device in every occasion.
For some reason Riz is really down on his SGS and to such an extent that it seems he's got a grudge against the device. Sell it or trade it in if it really makes you that unhappy.
For me it's really an awesome phone that comes with some minor annoyances that seem entirely caused by the fact that it's brand new. So far it appears that Samsung is putting a lot of effort in maturing the software and I expect the issues to be solved within a matter of weeks. In all reality it would take about 10 minutes to setup a new phone and have it operate well without even upgrading any firmware. A simple switch to launcherpro followed by a root with update.zip and then installing autokiller (i use strict profile) will solve 99% of the lag problems.
Battery life is very good after the first initial cycles.
GPS doesn't work right you may all ***** about that.
I'm sure I would be happy with the new HTC's, or even the iphone 4 (the thought of buying into apple's nasty attitude does make me cringe a bit) but I would still choose the SGS again providing they fix the gps.
Perhaps I'm being over critical but there are serious flaws with this device, there is no denying this.
GPS not working - there doesn't seem to be a solution, can't use copilot or googlemaps.
Lagging/freezing - changed to launcher pro not as bad but still occurs.
I hope the boys at samy are working hard to find fixes for these problems. If there are solutions then please guide me to them.
Don't get me wrong this device has potential and there alot of good features but due to issues mentioned above it just ruins the users experience.
I paid good money for this device not so that I could put it down but to use it. I'm just stating my experience for the benefit of others who maybe considering to buy this device.
If there are solutions wonderful p

I really dont uderstand all this gps not working talk.I use co pilot a lot and its extremely accurate and keeps lock in all weathers.Googe maps works indoors to within a house or so and out side gets me within 15 feet or so.I did have gps issues initially until I flashed firmware and factory reset. My i8910 hd had better gps but that was an exeptional phone for gps

Download the update.zip file from this thread.
Or direct link here
Copy the file to the internal storage card of the phone using Kies or whatever method you like.
Disconnect the usb cable
Turn off the phone
Press and hold these buttons at the same time: volume up+home+power, keep them pressed until you see the samsung logo.
Use volume rocker to navigate to update.zip and then press home to select.
Phone will reboot and you are now rooted with superuser.
The whole process takes less than 5 minutes.
I'm not responsible for anything
I like the phone but there are problems
1.keyboard has dup presses... solved with HTC keyboard. Also l key in portrait mode doesn't always work.
2. Gps lock not as good or reliable as my I 8910
3. StallING.. fix fixed it the only program that has a lag to load is sygic.
4. Image resizing not working well in gallery and web.
5. Still doesn't always switch back to 3g from edge. Jg1 is better than previous.

HD2 Android vs. Samsung Galaxy S

Ok so im looking at purchasing another phone. I have a few options that i can go so im looking for opinions. Im Looking at letstalk.com and i notice that i can get the galaxy S for 49.99 or i can get the HD2 for free by tmobile. Im currently with ATT and sporting the Tilt2 which im thinking of unlocking because i need a windows mobile phone to run the programming for my business. But what im thinking is should i get the HD2 and put andriod on it or should i just spend the extra to get the galaxy S. Is i far more superior?
Thank you for your opinions. As you can see by my number of posts im a bit of a noob but been lurking around for a lil.
I would definitely go for the samsung galaxy S. I tested them both at home. In the beginning the HD2 will do just fine but once you'll want to have some more apps you will regret you bought the windows mobile phone. I had bought the HTC Touch HD almost 2 years ago and I recently sold it to get myself the HTC Desire.
To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of windows mobile despite the fact that you can modify alot on these devices. I think that for most of the people android based phones are the best option.
Don't understand me wrong: android phones can be modified pretty easily too, but not as easy as a windows mobile phone.
Something about the Samsung Galaxy S:
- It feels a little bit cheap (casing)
- You get a lot of bangs for your bucks (Playing games on it will definitely be better seen the fact that it has PowerVR, correct me i'm wrong, and a A8 cortex cpu)
- It has a screen that had more vivid colors than the HD2 (and a little bit more than the HTC Desire).
- Camera works very well in the dark, even though it hasn't got a flash. (That's my thought.)
If you have any further questions, don't bother to ask!
Greetz
As the owner of an Htc hd2 coming from a iphone 2g and A t-mobile g1
had I waited for the samsung galaxy s( i actually prefer the att version)
Android runs great on the hd2 but its still a work in progress so while It make be dependable for me it may not be for you.
Winmo on the hd2 sucks. sense is a must. as everything else just barely gets by.
I met a lot of people who didnt like the htc hd2's because of the software.
Personally I love mine. But i cant help but admit how nice the hardware in the galaxy s is.
It is based on the same cpu in the iphone 4. I also hear that the gpu is close o or the iphone 4.
I think you missed the OP's point since he said he would be putting Android on the HD2, so it's not a matter of Android vs. WinMo..
Anyway, I think you should go with the Samsung S, mainly because of the gorgeous screen and the more powerful graphics
I gotta say get the HD2 and put Android on it. Its the best of both worlds. I run 2.2 FLAWLESSLY on my HD2, its very quick and reliable these days..
thanx for all the replies to my question. Ive been still swaying to more of the galaxy s. The flawless andriod is what did it for me basically and i also like the fact of how fast it is plus the front screen camera. I think its the route im planning to go. But still i do own a ATT Tilt 2. So i can still switch to windows mobile if needed. But once again thanx for your opinions. Keep them coming if you have more. Im not making my purchase till friday so i still have time just incase any of you have issues with the galaxy s.
The bad thing about Android on the HD2 is that you boot into Windows. You run Android off of the SD card. While it may be "flawless" it isn't the best. It's something to play around with but still isn't the best stable day-to-day solution I'd used as my mobile phone.
I ran Android on my AT&T HTC Pure and it was meh. I basically just tested the waters before jumping to another device.
If you want Android, get an android phone.
I wouldn't BUY an HD2 just to run Android on it. If you HAD an HD2 and wanted an Android phone... then it might buy you some time.
The Galaxy S is not without its problems, like gps(that samsung will fix by september). Plus windows mobile has gone a loooong way. I would go with the HD2 or wait for the G2 or Mytouch HD to drop. The galaxy has a screen that's a little better, but I really don't see what All the fuss is about, the screen on the HD2 is amazing. Plus wait till windows phone 7 drops, the devs are going to end up hacking it to work on the HD2 and you will be able to have your choice of flavors.
Or you can get the galaxy and enjoy android 2.1
Ill tell you what I tell my coworkers, if you are looking for an open box vanilla solution go with the galaxy, go with the hd2 if you are serious about getting your hands dirty pushing the capability of your phone to the limits while enjoying every minute of it.
Tmo US HD2
EnergyRomz -Shubcraft Froyo
I would recommend the Galaxy because of a full working Android System. HD2 with Android is still good but not perfect and some things don't work.
Android has way more Apps and you can customize it better + WM6.5 is running out. The new WM7 Phones will be incompatible with WM6.5 Software and I think more and more programmers will switch to WM7.

I completely agree with that! Well said
As my signature indicates, I own the Samsung Captivate (which is the AT&T version of the Galaxy S). It's an amazing phone with a very good screen and, as always from Samsung, amazing specs.
The GPS does seem to be a bit of a problem as noted within the forums, but there are plenty of fixes available. Personally, I've never noticed any problems, but perhaps I'm an exception.
As a side note, though, the GPS on the Captivate worked far better than it did for me on my HTC Fuze.
But moving on, perhaps the bigger thing to note is that the Galaxy S will get an official update to Froyo in September. As it is, one can easily get the Galaxy S to great performance (thanks to the folks on this forum), but Froyo is supposedly 4-5x faster than 2.1, so I have high hopes for the next update.
If nothing else, I agree with what a prior user said. If what you're looking for is an Android OS, it makes a lot more sense to actually purchase an Android phone instead of getting a WinMo phone and trying to run a ported version of Android.
Short answer: Galaxy S.
LCD, no matter how good, is no way close to being as good as a SAMOLED. And the better performing processor + gfx chip, polished touchwiz interface and samsung apps definitely make it a way sweeter deal.
Also, the GPS problem is close to non existent in the newer hardware. Myself, I never encountered it. The build is satisfactory, not as good as droid but definitely as good as any HTC device, HD2 included.
Not to mention that the touch display sensitivity is close to being as good as droid/milestone. On most of HTC devices, you have to press much harder to register your input.
I would never recommend HTC and Motorolla when it comes to build quality and support.
I know many may disagree but I had my share of bad experiences with both.
Moto was obviously a disaster, but I'm not ashamed to criticize HTC any day.
samsung support is aweful -.-' i own a samsung galaxy spica i5700 and samsung fcked it up thank god for good devs that developed multitouch and better 3d driver.
BTW go for galaxy s (captivate or something) and w8 for android 2.2 and some custom roms + tweaks to make it super aawesome. HD2 is ****
this thread will not give you an exact solution to your question, but, you may benefit from what everyone's experience is.
I would say if you are settled that you want flwless android then go with galaxy S I9000 since it is an excellent phone.
The HD2 is also an excellent phone and the win mo running on it is very good, i did not have any problems with the performance or touch response and i like the HD2 because it gives me an option to a lot of mods for win mo and now i have android 2.2 installed from few days and working very nice.
Finally the descision is yours, and both devices are really good, eventhoug the screen on the galaxy is superiour to the hd2 screen also galaxy S can capture a HD video, but i believe as a camers, the hd2 is better.
hope i was usefull and if you require something in specific, dont hesitate to ask.
Good luck

I used to be a chef of Windows Mobile roms a few months ago before my Nexus. I cooked for several phones ending with the Diamond 2. I've known Da_G before he got into HTC phones. I'm pretty sure that Windows 7 is incompatible with existing phones. The entire file structure is different and the drivers are different.
I'm not saying the guys here at XDA aren't amazing and things may have changed in a month or so... but IF it can be ported over at all I doubt it will be soon nor perfect.
I believe HTC is building an HD3 that is suited for Windows Phone 7.
two cents from HD2 owner
I never tried Samsung Galaxy S, so this is just my experience with HD2.
Installed both cooked WinMo (just for booting) and Android which run 99% of the time.
For the past 3 months I've been trying almost all sorts of Android built.
It's kind of love and hate experience.
You need to spend time upgrading, patching, backing up, restoring.
On the other hand you can enjoy quality apps, widgets and easy integration with social networks at zero cost.
Also, I can't deny the good feeling when someone ask "wow.. what phone is that?"
I would say the HD2. The flexibility is awesome. You can use WinMo or Android. You can use the sense interface. Sense looks great, the galaxy S looks like a wannabe iPhone.
I tried some builds on the HD2. And the most recent MattC build gives me everything i need. GPS works, Bluetooth carkit works and the normal phone stuff works. I like the HD2 a lot.
Hi I'm proud owner of both phones.
My opinion is that if you want to by an android phone buy the galaxy s don't take the hd2 and try to make it something that it's not.
Comparing the two phones:
hd2 disadvantages:
1. it has winmo 6,5 which is no longer supported,
2. it has a much less vivid display.
Hd2 advantages:
1. build in flash,
2. screen is bigger,
3. the phone although it has a snapdragon processor it's much snappier than galaxy s (I use JPC firmware with lag fix)
4. The build quality of the phone is much better.
Galaxy S on the other hand:
Advantages:
1. Android.
2. Screen is very bright and no pictures displaying the phone can capture the brightness and how much vivid the colors are.
3. It has tv out. (haven't tested it though)
4. Lighter.
Disadvantages:
1. Poor build quality. (it's all made out of plastic)
2. The camera although it can capture 720p video, it has very poor quality in pics.
3. Touchwiz is crap compared to sense.
Overall if hd2 had android I would prefer that one but only if it had android build in. I have tried many android versions on hd2 but none is compared to the real thing.
Hope I helped, if you have any questions don't hesitate to pm me.

I second this. oke winmo isn't the best OS , but with sense and using custom rom OzRom 5.0 and running android mattc Leo + Froyo w/Sense 1.7][Kernel: mattc 2.6.32.9 #4 without any major problems, it's a great machine.
look at the HD2 section.. it's already heavy with different sections and if winmo 7 is fix for the hd2 an other section will be there (would be nice) but not a big deal for me. this is no option for the galaxy..
tested andriod now for two days, never had it on before, because i didnt feel the need for it, but i have no problems with this combination.

The state off custom rom cooking/flashing on M9 !

Hi guys !
I just wanted to share and reflect some thoughts....I have intention to complain and come off as ungreatful.
I´ve been around and flashing custm roms since about the launch of HTC Desire !
And I have stayed true to HTC with an occasional side step to Samsung S2...for a short while.
AFAIK remember with every lauch off HTC "flagship" models it usually doesn´t take long before the roms starts to pop up.
And after a couple of months or so there usallay are alot of roms to choose from. Bothe modified original ones and AOSP:ish ones.
But this time it seemse to me like there isn´t as many roms out as there usually are, by this time !
Is my memory failing me or has some thing changed ?
Is it harder to "****" roms for the M9 or has the interest in HTC models lowered ?
And again...I´m not here to complain...I´m very greatful to thoose who takes the time with the roms and when I finaly decide wich rom to use for my daly work I ALWAYS donate. I just want to share my reflections and thoughts...and see if anyone else feels the same.
(Excuse my poor english)

Well the top 5 or 6 HTC developers are here and that's what really matters. CM 12.1 is making progress and may be stable enough for daily use soon.
But yes the M9 is not selling anything like the M8 did and it shows. I believe many of the m8 owners just don't see the need to update this round. And it's a real shame, I sold my M8 for the M9 and have no regrets

thinking the same as you alot of people saying its not worth the upgrade from the m8 but it is better camera better processor more ram better ram fair enough screen is the same and design but the design is one of the best that's came out in the mobile world for years if its not broke don't fix it i my first android was the desire also loved htc for years had the m7 and still have the m8 aswell as the m9 had the s6 edge and standard s6 had to come back to htc lol if your a good enough dev you can blind build so not getting the 9 is not really an excuse to not develop for it
I'll be happy with cyanogen

9 copies of the same general rom don't really add much for me. Also with the themeing option in stock it kind of makes it a replacement for some.
Sent from my 0PJA2 using XDA Free mobile app
It don't bother me to much. I'm happy with leedroid at the moment. It has been a great experience. I'd be happy if I can get SlimLP in the near future. That's been my go to rom for years and I miss it a lot. I have no regrets upgrading from M8
Personaly I didn´t jump on the M8 wagon...my M7 was good enough.
And as son as it was possible I did a GE conversion on the M7...and loved it !
I would love be able to run stock Android again on my M9
Having that said....HTC has come a long way with Sense 7 and finally started to listen to the user demands, and for now I´m happy with it !
ATM running MaximusHD 6.0.0 !
