[Q] Sensors near earpiece (S4 vs Note 3) Update - Answered - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello nice boys & girls of xda!
I was thinking of buying a Galaxy S4, but after seeing the Note 3 I've decided that it's just perfect for me.
When I read that the N3 can do all the "Smart" stuff the S4 can do, one question popped in my mind, Why doesn't the Note 3 have the same sensor placement as the S4?
I know there is a Proximity sensor, IR Gesture sensor on both phones & and a front facing camera, but the Note 3 seems to have one less sensor. Anybody else ever wonder why?
Sorry if I'm breaking any xda rules, but this question is really driving me Notes
Update: It looks like the Proximity sensor and IR Gesture sensors are combined on the Note 3. Thanks to ShadowLea and Skander!
You can find the manual here: http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=MOBILE_UK&CttFileID=5538735&CDCttType=UM&ModelType=N&ModelName=SM-N9005&VPath=UM/201309/20130916132857484/SM-N9005_UM_EU_Jellybean_Eng_Rev.1.1_130913_Screen.pdf

Hmmm,, I think that could be the case.
Maybe they found a way to add the IR Gesture sensor into the Proximity sensor, which might explain why people are having trouble with the proximity sensor, Because it's arranged in a different way than other phones?

Is it rgb sensor ?

There is a sensor on the left of the earpiece that you can't see but comes on for notifications etc...

It could be. But right now there is still confusion as to whether the N3 even has a RGB sensor.

That's odd. It does have an automatic brightness setting doesn't it?
That sensor is supposed to measure 3 wavelengths of light (Red, Green & Blue) and adjust the brightness of the screen accordingly.
But if there is no RGB sensor then how the hell is it measuring light?
Previous Samsung Galaxy phones had a RGB sensor but they could only measure the Green wavelength of Natural light. But your screen shows that the value for green is zero. I wonder how that is possible. Did you have the auto brightness button ticked while performing this test? Which app is this BTW?

I think Note 3 has proximity and rgb sensors in one hole (or another two sensors in one place).

No, there is. Just open test app (*#0*#) and use "Sensor" button. You will see "Lights Sensor" info with RGB data

How do I start the test app? I tried dialing it, but it doesn't do anything.

Did you use a Samsung dialer?

The Note 3 has an RGB-Sensor. Testing with Test-App show values for RGB.
The Notification LED is there on the Note 3 and the S4, but hidden under the Color-Glass.

Robert

The Proximity and Gesture sensors are now combined, with the light sensor next to it.
That's why it has 1 less sensor opening.

I did, but nothing happens. Let me confirm my steps.
Open dialer (Phone app)
Dial stuff
Hit send?
It actually just dials and tells me I can't make that call. Is there some setting that I need to make sure is set or something?

Do you have an unbranded Note 3? If yes then it should work. I know some carriers remove this stuff from Samsung phones so it doesn't work if you have a carrier specific model.

It's called the 'manual'.

as stated, manual.
However you can try this yourself.
open the *#0 test menu and select "Sensors", test the proximity sensor by putting something near it and the page will vibrate and turn green.
Now hide that sensor (activating the proximity sensor) and open the "gesture sensor direction" test (in the same sensor page).
Click start and wave your hand specific directions, it won't work.
Uncover the proximity sensor and try again - it will work.
A simpler way of doing this is turning on air gesture, going to a picture in the gallery, hiding the proximity sensor and attempting to do a gesture.

Where is the proximity sensor on the Xoom?

Just installed this app:

But can't seem to find any info on where this sensor is located?
Xoom doesn't have a proximity sensor (the intended purpose of including one is to prevent you from pushing buttons with your face)
I think its next to the front camera but have you tried just moving your hand around the xoom? I'm about to install that app, I'm curious now.

about the floating swipe in s4

i've seen a function in s4 where you can swipe pictures back and forth without even touching the screen
is this hardware related or software related?? cause i'm thinking of getting note 2 cause of its size and the pen and s4 specs are not really worth an upgrade from note 2, and i would really like to have the floating swipe thing.
hardware related it's called Air gesture and uses a sensor
Sounds like software related to me

Wrong, it is hardware related. There's a sensor up top of the phone that recognizes air gestures and allows interaction. Think about it, how else could it be?
Smart scroll ( when you tilt the phone and the front camera sees your eyes and scroll up and down) and smart pause ( when you watch a video and you look away and it pauses) is also hardware related, well front facing camera related. The S3 will be capable of smart scroll and smart pause when Samsung release it but won't be capable of the air gestures because it lacks the sensor to recognize the hand movement.
On the note phones, it works with the Wacom digitizer and the S-pen interaction.

Probably not completely true here. I have used an app on my SGS3 that does control some things with just hovering the hand over the screen called Wave Control. It is basically only used for pausing, playing music etc. but it shows that even the sensors in the SGS3 can do things by hovering/swiping over the sensors.

Now I am NOT saying the SGS3 will work as good as the SGS4 but I saying it does already work on the SGS3 to some as sense of the word. So WHEN the SGS3 gets the software and or firmware for those sensors updated to the same android version as the SGS4 we MAY have the same functionality built in. I am sure the sensors in the SGS4 will do it better? but until we actually have the phone in our hands we will not know for sure and until they are running the same software. So it is ALL speculation at this point. Plus I think I remember at the unboxing event they mentioned it as well working on the SGS3.

Does the app that you downloaded work for every android phone or just galaxy phones? And I'm pretty sure the S4' s sensor is the one that makes the air gestures possible. Otherwise what is its function?

Not sure what other devices it works on. I just know that it works for music. Plus looking at the pic you posted up IF the two sensors on it that are used for the gesture it may be that the SGS3 uses the same sensors as the sgs3 has those two (or looks the same at least as far as location of them). I would have to look up what sensors the SGS3 shows in a pic to know for sure. There is a FREE version to try out. I did the paid version. I haven't used it much but I saw the potential and wanted to help out the dev. He is here in xda.
Some of the things it can do.

There's a dedicated "Gestures sensor", so it's a hardware thing. You might achieve similar effects with the front camera or proximity sensor on other phones, but I doubt they'll be as good.
If you mean the two dots on the right side next to front cam,Its an IR proximity sensor.Even the very old SGS has it and almost all mid range phones too.May be samsung made it a better IR proximity sensor by doing some changes to make it adapt to gestures. But on the base line,It is again just a IR proximity sensor.

I would like to see the same kind of pic for the SGS3 to clarify the ACTUAL sensors for comparison
But the TWO on the right look the same as on the SGS4 and then has the addition of the other one on the left. So until I see an actual breakdown of the sensors on the SGS3 I am just plain confused.
Are the two sensors on the SGS3 Right side of earpiece a proximity sensor and light sensor? Or is it a proximity sensor and what is now called gesture sensor? If that is the case where is the light sensor on the SGS3? I looked around a bit but didn't find the same kind of sensor location breakdown for the SGS3. I JUST KNOW hovering works/swiping works on the SGS3 and I think I remember the Samsung event actually making a comment it would work on the SGS3 as well.

Looks like the SGS3 has the light sensor (rgb) and proximity sensor. So this would mean on the SGS4 they moved around the sensor locations and added the gesture sensor.

Whats the 4th sensor on the fron of the galaxy s4.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew what the sensors on the fron of the galaxy s4 are. It obviously has a camera, and one is a proximity sensor. I think one is a light sensor, but whats the 4th?
Anyone know? Is it something for motion tracking? (and if so is there an api for it?)
(On an unrelated note, is there any api for the hover above the touchscreen?)
Thanks. I'm just curious. It seems like these phones have more sensors that there are things to sense lol. (seriously does a phone need a pressure sensor and barometer? )

I wouldn't mind trading it in for the s6. Only thing is I already have money invested in an edge case and screen protector or a 50 dollar restocking fee. I just want to know for sure if this is fixable or not. Is it sensor or software? I'm hopeful because of how fast samsung released an update for battery life, but that seemed app related and not firmware.

problem is the auto brightness is off, so why am i able to manipulate the sensor into adjusting the screen based on covering the sensor? Also, my phone cant get as bright or vibrant as the phone next to mine, unless i shine a flashlight into the sensor. This shouldnt happen.

Check if your display mode is Adaptive display....if it is, that will adjust your display. Not as strong as auto brightness but it will adjust it, especially in cases like shining a flashlight (similar to sunlight mode). If you wanna test, turn off auto brightness AND change mode to cinema instead of adaptive.

Ok wierd so its like auto brightness stuck on. Your not using adaptive screen brightness are you? Because I noticed mine doing some annoying adjustments even with auto brightness off but changing to amoled cinema and then turned auto brightness off and my screen would stay the same in all conditions. However turning power saving mode on also makes screen duller.

Same thing here. It is a very annoying bug. I will return my s6 edge because of this. I spoke with Samsung customer care (NL) and they were not aware of the issue, it is amazing. So probably even if a software upgrade could fix the issue, probably Samsung will not release it because they are not aware of the issue at all!
It is a shame that Samsung acts like that with a phone of 850 euro.

Ok good. But if Samsung didn't acknowledged the issue so fast, probably it's not going to address the issue with a software upgrade, isn't it? Moreover if this is the case ALL the s6 edge in the world must be affected, but someone is saying that his own s6 edge had not this issue, which I don't believe honestly. I also think this is software related.
