Need some advice regarding my new S4 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought my S4 in Korea. It is a SHV 300S LTE device. Octa core sold through SKT.
I would like to remove all the bloatware, maximize battery life, and use nova launcher with the click UI icons.
Should I root my device? If so why? What are the top 5 ROMs?
Also what is the best / easiest method for backing up my device? (apps, info, ect)
Also, is there an app or software to which I manage my music preferably similar to itunes and iphone? Would like for the phone to be able to automatically add new music to my device and keep it up to date.
Sorry for all the questions. Any and all advice will be much appreciated. Thanks

Idk if your variant has any roms but the best roms on i9500 are Omega, Wanam and Crash ROMs. Theres Cyanogenmod too but thats in alpha I think.
You can remove bloatware with Titanium Backup after root and you can backupw ith it too. And CWM backups are good too.

How can I find out my variant? All I am seeing is SHV-300S.
Also I have not updated to 4.3. Should I do that first or after a root?

Removing bloatware is possible only after rooting your phone.
If you want to backup your device after rooting, you can do it if you will flash custom recovery (CWM or TWRP)
For backup without the root you can try Helium app from PlayStore.
I don't know if there is any custom ROM for your variant of S4, i'm sure if there is, you will find it here on xda.
I also don't know any app to sync music automaticly, simply i never needed one.
Hope that helps a little bit.

What rooting method / tutorial would you recommend?
Maybe I am better off just freezing apps?

try cf-root

1. I am already rooted, what back up , ROM and other stuff do I need to use. There are so many links to so many choices.

First off, you don't NEED to use anything but what you have right? If for some reason you are not happy with what your phone comes with than it is all personal preference. I use TWRP for custom recovery/backups and is very easy to install via GooManager app. No flashing required, all touch based, and designed very friendly I think. As for roms, kernels, etc. they all pretty much install the same and will give different results. If you don't want to complicate things just stick with rooted stock unless it does not do something you need.

The question to start with is, "What do you want your phone to do"?
Look at the capabilities of your phone with the stock ROM:
Are you happy with the way it works? (or can you make it work the way you want by changing the available options)? If so, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with some application? Can you download an app that fixes this? If so, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with the UI? Try out another launcher - if that works for you, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with the bloat on your phone? Can you disable that bloatware? If so, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with the bloat on your phone? If you can't disable that bloatware? If so, you need to root - and then, you can freeze or remove the bloat app
Do you just want to backup everything? If so, you may not need root to use titanium backup - see if Helium backup (by CWM) does the trick for you
Do you want to change everything about your ROM, or flash a new kernel to get better battery life, or get some feature that is not available on the stock ROM (but is available on a custom ROM)? Then, root, install custom recovery (like twrp or CWM), take nandroid backup, and then flash new ROM
To summarize, what do you want your phone to do?

For the moment, the stock ROM has the most current updates. (but I'm pretty sure the carriers will delay the release of the next update, so at that time, flashing a custom ROM may be the way to go)
WiFi Tether - you don't necessarily have to flash a custom ROM just for that - you can get that just by updating the services.* files (see the hotspot mod thread in the Android development forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256950)
Best signal - you will get that based on the radios that are being used, and I believe the custom ROMs use the radios from Sprint as well.
Best battery - for that, you will need to pick a good kernel, so a custom ROM will probably be your best bet.
Hope that helps!

Glad this info was helpful
Just remember to do a Nandroid backup before you flash any custom ROMs or make any changes to the kernel or the root folders.
Personally, I use the latest touch based version of TWRP (installed using goomanager in the play store) - but CWM works fine too.
Being able to revert back to the nandroid backup has saved my rear end more than once

[Q] Noob needing help updating and backing up

Hi all...sorry if this is very noob but hope someone can help me out...
i got my galaxy s4 for att and its been great so far...i did root it and got rid of all the junk stuff on the phone which was nice to do... but a little issue now..there is an OTA update and its trying to apply it by rebooting but it goes to my console screen i guess and i know even if it applies it it would get rid of root.... is there a way to apply this without having to reinstall all my emails (5 emails) and my apps and keep the root ability on it? I would love to get the feature to send apps to my SD thats the only reason i really want it.
again im sorry if this is very noobish to some of u but would like a nice guide if possible how to do it.
Thanks in advance
What device? Thats important, and DO NOT let it do the update. if you are rooted, you could freeze the samsung updater.
I would get off stock and flash a custom rom.

hehe I know you stated galaxy s4, but I needed to make sure, US version right?
Use my rom, mine is totally stock, with a few modifications, and FAST!
or you can go any TW rom.
here is mine..

I use Infamous S4 as well, I love it. It's pretty stock feeling.
When it comes to the backing up part, I suggest Titanium Backup. Get the pro version and you can batch install all of your apps from a backup, otherwise you have to do it one by one. It also saves all app data and system data and accounts, so you can do a full wipe when installing an update or a new ROM (always a good idea,) then just let it completely restore the phone from a backup. You can use it to back-up everything, except for the home-screen layout (android limitation apparently.) Plus you can backup right to the phone if you have space so you don't have to wory about using the computer. I recomment getting a microSD card for 10 bucks at Staples and backing up to that. When you're restoring, make sure that you check what you're restoring. Most of the stuff in red are system apps that don't need to be restored (as newer or the same versions may already be installed from the update.)
For restoring root priviledges, CWM and TWRP custom rrecoveries have a tool for this.

[Q] Things to take note before rooting

Hi,
I was wondering what things are important to save before rooting? I know this has been asked a few times, but i'm asking in reference of S4 specifically, international version if there is any difference?
Thanks!
Always backup everithing you can

Actually you do not need to save or backup anything at all if all you
are doing is rooting the phone.
Rooting any android phone does not effect any of your settings, apps,
pictures, music, videos, mms, contacts or anything you have installed
on your phone.
The only thing rooting will do is to allow you to use root dependent apps to
work with your phone as well as having full access to the root of the phone
which means you will be able to flash custom roms, mods, themes & addons.
Rooting will have NO effect and will NOT touch or mess with any of your files on your phone.
Good luck!

New to Custom ROMs

Hey,
I'm new(ish) to using custom ROMs for my Galaxy Note 3 and I have a few questions, and questions pertaining to previous custom ROM expieriences.
For starters, my Note 3 is already Knox 0x1 (or whichever one means void).
I'm using a Canadian Galaxy Note 3 (Rogers) and I am trying to find a Custom ROM that can suit my needs.
Previously I've used xnote (I think that's what it's called) and it was great, except that trying to re-stock my Note 3 has led to problems with the LTE as LTE service is fairly unavailable since.
So, what I'm looking for is a ROM much like xnote that doesn't require me to change my device from the SM-N900W8 to some other modem or whatever, or atleast can repair the issue with my current stock firmware.
That aside, the features I need are fairly basic. I need something that doesn't hijack my device. I don't like seeing that Facebook starts itself after I close it, I don't like seeing that I can't remove stock applications. So I need something that is free of bloat-ware and gives me full access to my phone and the applications that I've installed. If possible I'd like to limit the permissions they require to be used.. Nothing frustrates me more than seeing that my "clock" app needs to access my phone call history, browsing history, bank info, can install other apps, delete apps, remove the password, create a password, etc. It's absolutely ridiculous that google has allowed these apps to exist with such permissions.
Basically. I am looking for freedom, with a ROM that supports Canadian modems rather than forcing me to mess up my extremely expensive signal. (trust me, Canadians pay $43 more than the rest of the world)

you don't need custom ROM just for that.
a root access will be good enough
If you need something super responsive with great battery life, I'd recommend Vision X N3. They just released a great update. You mix that with the Compulsion KK 15 kernel and you have a beast in your hands.
I have a Telus Note 3 and I wouldn't want anything else. Maybe the Note 4 soon

Have you experienced any connectivity issues with this? It seems awesome but I don't want to jump the gun and flash this as I'm not a big fan of setting everything up over and over since Titanium Backup is about as useful as a potato for backing up important information / data.

I have screwed up my modem firmware once because of a bad flash but that's because I was careless. If you follow a tutorial properly and read on the subject (this forum is a great place to learn), you should not have any issues. You'll see that the advantages of a custom ROM will, by far, surpass all the trouble to get there.
I have to agree about Titanium Backup... The thing that I hate the most is re-creating folders and re-arranging widgets. I know that if you use another launcher (ex: Nova Launcher) you can save the layout but personally, I like the stock launcher.
Sorry for the invadence, i have two questions before doing the "damage", i am on the latest NF4, stock rom, i would like to root and install custom recovery and custom rom (i don't care about knox), can i just root with cf auto root, install latest TWRP and then custom rom as usual or, at cause of the locked bootloader, could i have some problems? In the case i want to return "stock", do i just have to flash stock rom with Odin? I already backed up my EFS just yo be sure...

If you need to flash back to stock, use Odin with the stock firmware file from SamMobile.

I just flashed Assassin ROM and LTE etc.. are working just fine on that

Begginer looking for quick help

yo yo yo devs and phone maniacs,
i have s5-900f or something similiar to that and after 2 years i am out of patience. My phone is laggy ( snapchat and camera opening like 50 billion years maybe slightly more) and i need some quick reminder what to do. I used custom rom on my S3 back in the days, well i forgot like everything, but i remember some odin and these things so i am not complete begginer. So i need some quick tips and what to do like root your phone download this and this ( not exactly, but what is it called and what to look for) and i will google it i am not that retarded, i hope i just need quick heads up. I think main issue is the bloatware, but you probably know that more than i do.
First i have some questions
- Do i need to install custom rom to be without bloatware ?
- If so is cyanogenmod the most reliable here or there are some version which looks like the same as the stock rom ?
I dont care actually that much about look, i just need everything to work, like snapchats/camera and not to drain battery like its some milk from mother's nipple. This might be the stupidest thing in the world, but launcher thing like touchwiz and google launcher, i deal with that after the rom adjusting, am i right ? I might wrote complete bullsh*t, well i dont understand these things that much
I hope atleast someone will help me with the basics or transfer me to some thread where i can find more answers than questions
Thank you very much for reading and eventually helping

you have quite the way with words
we will need to know what exact model you have. Look under the battery. If your bootloader is locked, root methods differ from unlocked ones
and you dont need a custom rom, just root and titanium backup. make a backup of the full rom, then go into TiB and make a backup of the bloatware apps and then remove them, or if you go pro with TiB (titanium backup) you can freeze apps

Just grab twrp 3.0.2-1 and flash it via Odin. Once installed, boot to recovery and select reboot then power off. It'll ask you if you want to j stall SU, swipe to confirm yes. Power it back on and you should have SuperSU in your app drawer. From there you can use TiB to remove the crapware and it'll speed your phone up and decrease lag. Yes, a custom ROM will substantially improve performance and battery life. The euro version isn't my deepest field of expertise, as it has a Samsung xynos processor as opposed to the snapdragon in the us variants and some things G's can get murky because of that, but the answer to your battery and lag issue is either a complete wipe and start from scratch, TiB your troubles away or custom rom that thing!

Well, i can tell you that no custom ROM is perfect, but the touchwiz ones are more trouble free than CM based ROMs. I run MOAR 7.0 and its very trouble free, but i use a G900P.
