Stick with the Diamond, much better IMO. Only advantages of a HD is the bigger screen and more RAM, but I think the Diamond is much more useable.
To answer your question, that appears to be the case for me, yes.
"Only" the screen is a pretty major advantage, it's almost double the size. The Diamond isn't seriously usable for web browsing - the HD is. Ditto for video.

That's rubbish and completely untrue. I find the camera to be quite excellent and picture quality very good in fact.
I don't blame you though for getting that impression. Before I got my own unit, I also had that false impression from reading all the complaints on this forum. But after getting my own HD, I'm really happy with it. This is despite not having flash.

Exactly the HTC Touch HD is a great phone. Some people reading forum like this think they get a good sampling of what people using the phone think about it. That is not true since it is mostly the maybe 1% that have troubles of some kind with their phone that write here. The rest of the people that are happy with their phone do not write about.
The only thing I can recommend for people considering buying the phone is to get the phone and try it out. You will most likely like it a lot.
Camera is not bad, but also not good. Don't buy it as a camphone.
I've got a nokia n82 and a touch hd.
If the cam is ****? Yeah, it is. Don't let people let you think different. I guess it's not worse than other htc-phones though, I haven't had one since the original touch (elf).
If it was daylight out here now (denmark, actually) I should have taken comparision shots for you, but it's not, and with the xenon flash on the n82 it is even more superior in this light.
That said, the touch hd is a fantastic device in every other aspect! I didn't buy it for the cam, and don't care about it's picture quality, since I've got my n82.
The camera is only suitable for taking pictures in well-lit area.
Forget about dark areas.
All in all I'm sufficiently pleased with it, as I did not expect anything great.

In the drak they are very dark - the missing flash is a desaster.
Do not buy the hd for taking pictures or videos

The quality of the photos that the Touch HD can take is far better than the three HTC devices I've used before. It's actually pretty good in my limited experience with it. However, the camera remains virtually unusable because of two things:
1 - the delay between tapping the screen and the photo taking the image while the camera fusses over the focussing and then thinks for a couple of seconds
2 - the lack of hardware button makes camera shake very hard to avoid
These two factors make it almost impossible to take a photo of a moving scene because of the unpredictability of the timing of the shot and the likelihood of camera shake.
Attached is a photo I've just taken in the low evening light that illustrates what should be a perfectly easy photo. I couldn't avoid camera shake even standing still and being ultra-careful. The exposure isn't bad though.

TIP: Disable the "Auto Whiteness" in the camera.
I have spent the last 2 weeks playing with the camera and was very disappointed with low level lighting pictures at first, BUT! now I have ressolved this problem.
There is an option in the camera "Auto Whiteness", the sensor or software in the camera seems to be useless at judging lighting, so if you set this to manual and select the indoor lighting icon (looks like a light bulb) then the camera gives quite impressive low level lighting pictures.
Speed of the camera between pressing and taking a picture is about 3 seconds, not the worst shutter delay I have seen on a camera phone, but not the best. Hopefully HTC can address this with future software updates??
For me the main issue is the blurryness of virtually all pictures,
if its a picture of a person I have to ask them to be still, then I take a pic and then I have to ask them once more to be DEAD STILL.
Most people take stay still to mean don't walk off any where but with the Touch HD stay still means don't let one muscle move.
If you want a phone that takes decent picture then its not or you.
Its a multimedia phone (pics not included)
I have been playing with the HD for two days now, which meant finding all of the tweaks and then removing them until it works for me. The excellent tweak app (search for it here) recommends enabling the sport and burst modes of photo (works great) and then changing the maximum res to 3M (makes my phone crash!)
Anyway if you want to take really good SHAKE FREE pics the ONLY way is through the burst/sport options. The auto focus for the 'normal' cam is so crap that the shutter stays open forever. In sport or burst mode the camera has to ditch the refocus and just shoot - out of the 5 in sport or 30 in burst you will have two or 10 decent pictures. This was exactly the same on my old HTC P3900.
The video is still completely crap - although much improved if you shoot as for MMS.
If we're talking about very low light, even my Canon camera does not give good result. So I don't expect miracle from HD. Having said that, I have taken quite a lot of indoor shots with lights on and the result is not noticeably worst than what my Canon camera can deliver.
As for motion, I actually don't find any problem there. I have taken quite many shots with car moving towards and away from me and the sharpness is still there. No blurring at all.
I find vido recording to be really good.
The lack of hardware button is a non-issue for me. I find it very easy to just touch the screen, the try to hold it still for the process to be completed.
This is the best camera I've ever had in a phone, and I find myself using it quite a lot since getting my HD.
This is seriously the worst camera I've ever had in a phone. And the sad part is the auto focus which is way too slow and cannot be disabled. No other tweak will help really unless somebody will figure out how to set focus to infinity permanently.

Auto light balance is useless, shutter speed is miserably slow (not even for a still photo) , no flash , video is worthless. 5 MP not in full screen (in full screen it is 4MP) .
If you have kids and want to take a photo for them then please wait till thy sleep and start shooting , other wise you will be wasting only your time and battery .
It is even too bad in watching movies without setting hours and hours converting them!
I hope it is not a hardware issue and only software that can be updated later .

The Galaxy S4 turned out to be a huge disappointment contrary to the reviews I've read. I checked updates and I am running the latest updates so I am unsure what else I can do except trade this phone away for something else.... Any insight?

I just put "photo" in the search box in the 'General" section and at least 4 relevant posts came up on the front search page alone with "camera" or "photo" in the thread title. Reading through them should help you to better understand the situation. There isn't a "one fix" situation for your issue that is why it is important you read through the material available so you can see what you need to try and what works for you. Good luck.
To be fair the other threads don't contain a "fix" other than people in general bashing users claiming users coming from iPhone's don't know how to shoot.
This thread might be useful for finding out some sort of real solution to the issue.
For me, throwing the S4 into "Active" or "Sports" mode generally tends to help slightly. From what I can tell it's the actual camera app itself. The camera itself is superior to iPhone 4S and 5's camera. It's actually the same camera but a newer version more or less. It has a faster shutter speed and better fstop and such. Just I believe the camera software (Both Stock-Based rom and on CM10.1) are both slow to react. Usually in "Auto" it will see fast moving objects and the phone will adjust the shutter speed to be quicker. From what I can tell the Auto setting is just very slow to react and not as sensitive as what I was used to on the iPhone's camera app. Why manually setting "sport" seems to work for me as it tells the camera to use a higher shutter speed and doesn't have to figure it out on its own. Same deal goes for dark photos, which I get ALOT of. Manually changing the settings results in a good photo, however "Auto" seems to be playing stupid and not adjusting parameters the way that I'm used to. Some might be fine with it and used to it, but having used the iOS camera for years I'm not used to having to manually adjust all my settings to take a quick photo.

Thanks for that, appreciate it. I too will manually play with the default settings to see if they can adjust the photo better. Coming from an iPhone and HTC One X/One, the phones just all react and produce stunning images with minimal effort (and I don't mean filters, the actual photo quality is superb under the right angles/lighting).

Agreed. There is definitely a software lag as the phone ties to determine for itself what all the lighting conditions are, etc. Also, if you are using a slower external card, you will be much better off using the internal storage for photos so there is less wait time while the app writes the image.

Phone is saving to device so it isn't a write to memory problem. Just wish the software was better optimized if the shutter lag is not the hardware.
sport mode works best to reduce shutter lag; auto will cycle through modes and keep changing variables of shutter speed and ISO (aperture is fixed).
i would like to see if there is a way to dedicate more processors to the camera app, and crank up the processor speed when the camera app is opened (ie to 100%), that would fix the lag. is there a way to do this?
I'm debating between the G2 and the Note 3 and while I like both, I prefer the G2 overall, but the camera has me worried.
Note 3 so far seems to handle video fine and takes quick enough shots to capture pets/children scampering around. Low-Light isn't so good and might actually be worse then GS4 and N2 due to software changes which is annoying but hopefully fixable down the road. Overall, seems Note 3 doing well, but I'm not sure if it is worth forking over another $100 and dealing with the larger size when I prefer the smaller G2 just for the "chance" it has a better camera.
From the various reviews I've read and user reports on here, the G2 does very well in well lit situations, but may or may not be having issues in low-light and video.
I'm not big on video, but the audio and focusing problems do concern me a bit. I've read little to no feedback on taking quick photos capturing children/pets running around and am having my doubts with how the focus works (or doesn't).
While obviously low-light isn't a real strength for any phone, it's hard to get a real grasp on the G2 when review sites say it is great and does better then the rest (maybe due to office/studio perfect set ups?) and then users say it is down-right terrible without proper lighting (real world use).
Just looking for any feedback or samples of G2 users taking photos in low-light and of quick moving subjects. Search isn't working for me atm, but haven't seen any threads going into these too much. I really want the G2, but the Note 3's positive feedback is pulling me away.

So what I'm experiencing is that the stock camera app wants to lock focus before it takes a picture. If you're ever used a DSLR that spends awhile hunting before shooting in low light, that's what it feels like. Some other non-stock apps are a little more free with the shutter and take a picture without confirming focus (like a lot of P&S camera where you get blurry out of focus shots). So you can trade a quick shutter for worse focus depending on the app you use. The flash does a weird step down thing if you're really close to a subject (focal and stock) Super Camera does a more standard flash, but its still substantial shutter delay when using flash. You might be able to find other apps that have different flash behavior. So if you're shooting things that aren't going to run off in low light you might be fine. If they're moving you might try turning off the flash. The shutter is much quicker that way and maybe OIS can help make them sharp enough for you.
While this camera is really good in lit situations low light it's just plain bad and no other apps can fully comensate.
I bought ProCapture, already had FV-5 and numerous others from back in the day, (camera zoom, camera 360), tried focal. on and on.
Photos of children and pets even in "normal" lite rooms at night come out looking like watercolor abstracts and it has to be at a ROM or firmware level since all the apps do it to some degree.
If photos are you thing then the Droid DNA with a Sense5 ROM will produce fantastic results easily.
I know the camera issue has been beat to death already but I've been testing it for many days and would like to relay my results. A lot of people are saying that the auto focus is bad causing blurry pictures. This is false, the focus works great but the camera always chooses a shutter speed that's to low for the lighting causing blur on subjects in motion. The only way I can get the shutter speed over 1/20 is by taking a picture in bright light. Even in above average lighting conditions the shutter will go to 1/20 or below. There is no option for metering so I wonder if LG coded something wrong in the camera drivers. I have tried every camera program out there and they all take the exact same picture using the same to low shutter speed which tells me it's not the stock camera app. I don't have the skill to dive into the programming but that is where the problem seems to be. It's the same brand (Sony) camera sensor as the SGS4 so I know that it's not the sensors fault.
Any thoughts?

I had almost given up getting the camera to do what I wanted, when I discovered that the Intelligent Auto feature actually sometimes is ... intelligent. I took 4 photos of my toddler - obviously, not a subject willing to sit still. All photos on intelligent auto.
For two of the photos, the software shot with ISO 700 and 1/15th shutter, pretty much what Normal does every time. But - the other two were taken with ISO 1400-1/30 and ISO 1500-1/30. Naturally, the latter two were a lot sharper.
This is incredibly annoying since the Normal mode only lets you manually pick max ISO 800 and gives no shutter speed control. Until I found out about this intelligent auto thing, I forced -1, -1 1/3 stops underexposure to make the camera use a faster shutter (it typically used 1/59 for some reason). Now I guess I will take 5-6 pics every time and hope the camera is indeed intelligent part of the time.
- Is there no custom camera app capable of setting shutter speed manually, and use the ISO settings available to Intelligent Auto?
- Noone's had any word from LG on this?
I will be contacting LG support about this as well, but wanted to get the XDA word on the matter first...

Just replying to say I'm having the same issue. The fastest shutter speed I've seen is 1/15 in a well lit, easy to focus shot. The vast majority of my shots are blurry as a result.
I'm running Cyanogenmod at the moment.
I'm having pretty bad shutter speeds as well. It take 2 seconds to take a well-lit picture.
Guys , Try out the Moto X camera app. I may be wrong but i think its a bit faster .

I'm not talking about how long it takes to take the picture, that's delay. I'm talking shutter speed, how long the shutter stays open allowing light to hit the sensor.
I have not had any big problems with this, most of my shots are pretty tack sharp, and seem to have some decent shutterspeeds.. Only in very poor light I do get 1/15 shutterspeeds but at pretty average lights I get 1/30-1/120 sometimes faster, but mostly 1/40..
My shutterdelay is almist nothing too..
I found a modified version of the stock LG G2 camera by sefnap that works with CM 10.2 M1 and produces much better results: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522889
Some of the features don't work but overall it's vastly better than the camera included with CM.

I just discovered something the other day when playing with my camera... Albeit in bright light. Check out these pics taken at 60mph from my car while I was driving (ie not the most steady hand).
What I did was set it on sports mode and then old down the camera button until I heard the beep, and then released to capture the image I wanted (ie the road signs). The one out of my car window was actually more focused than I could focus with my naked eye...
Coming from the note 7, I've gotten used to setting it on auto, taking a pic, and getting great pictures... Something I'm not seeing with the v20.
Any tips or settings that may help?

I'll try to write something up later. How much photo experience do you have? How much digital photo knowledge base do you have? (So I know what starting point to use. Photography is a lot of art meets science. It's probably one of the better examples of a right and left brain balance.)
Hmm..I knowthat shutter speed and aperture go together. How they let more more light in by opening longer or wider.
I've tried taking pictures using auto and manual (no change in any settings)..and they come out similar. Except auto seems to do a better job auto focusing.
There's a setting buried in the menu to help with tracking. Make sure you have that on. Aperture is locked down on cellphones so you only really get to play with shutter speed and ISO. Unfortunately, as ISO goes up, so does the noise coming off the sensor. So you really have to balance getting a shutter speed that's just fast enough without getting too crazy with the ISO. This will apply to all cellphones no matter what anyone tries to tell you. (And this is why the pros will always shoot with full frame DSLR's. Much larger sensor, better noise handling, can really crank up the ISO with little ill effect.)
If you're getting blurring motion, you need a faster shutter speed which means higher ISO..... or...... you can practice the old school way and get a cool effect by practicing tracking your subject by hand. I practiced with my DSLR by tracking swallows and dragonflies in flight. For a phone, I think kids running around is about the equivalent. It's difficult but highly rewarding once you get it.
Light, and lots of it, will be your friend on small sensors like these. Cranking up the ISO for darker situations means one of two things will happen. A) You will get a lot of noise from the gain applied to the signal coming off of the sensor. Depending on the quality of the noise coming off of it, this can either be bad or good. For a while, Nikon was known for having a noise quality at higher ISO's that made for excellent B&W's. I'm actually investigating that with this camera as I think it has potential. B) Aggressive noise reduction is applied to the image and it butter faces the heck out of an image and turns it all water color. I have to zoom in way too far than one should before I see this happening. So it looks like noise reduction is being applied on a smaller scale which leaves better detail and might be why I'm seeing an agreeable noise profile. A few more test shots are needed though.
I will note that this all applies to the main shooting assembly (the 16mp f1.8 sensor). The wide shooting assembly is a smaller sensor and the aperture is a smaller f2.4. So it'll require a higher ISO for the same shutter speed and it's going to be noisier shot for shot no matter what and it isn't as nice of a noise profile as the main sensor.

Manual mode. Manual mode happened and it's pretty damn good. A bit more manual control would make it great. (Let me decide when image stabilization is on, for instance.) This phone wasn't really about auto. That's what the Pixel is about to every degree. The V20 is about people who want to have more control over their content creation without getting too overboard.

I don't mind that. It's just auto can Bork up a picture real quick. Picking the right focus point helps with light situations a lot but still auto should be more decent out of the box. Why? Because half the rest you need to take the shot right away. Manual is fine and not too much complaints about it besides the voice trigger turning itself off all the time. If the manual mode was terrible too I'd pro a lot have returned the phone already. Manual, the audio, battery life, swappable battery and reception help make up for auto's inconsistency.

Auto is consistent. You just have to understand what's going on. I was really hoping that auto would have EV adjustment so we could change the bias of the exposure. The camera wants to expose a little bright to help control noise that you'll get from a small sensor. I'll take a bit of noise for a darker exposure. So to that end, I'll probably shoot manual. All I really need to do is set a minimum shutter speed and adjust ISO from there when I open the camera. That can all occur pretty fast.

Um, you don't need root for content control. A) Your complaint needs to be in the proper thread. This is about photo/video, not root. B) Sprint. (I live in their HQ city and see their CEO regularly at some of my favorite haunts. Don't expect any miracles from Sprint. It's a top down issue.)
My opinion, the camera as a hardware is good, however, LG needs to upgrade the camera app, specially with auto mood, this coming from a user that have used Samsung for a very long time, and now very disappointing with LG camera
i hope LG is reading this, and can push that kind of update soon..

My opinion, the camera as a hardware is good, however, LG needs to upgrade the camera app, specially with auto mood, this coming from a user that have used Samsung for a very long time, and now very disappointing with LG camera
i hope LG is reading this, and can push that kind of update soon..

I agree. I came from the note 3 and i was taking side by side and the note 3 was taking better pics! Not sure if there's an issue with my v20 but ilI'lll be returning it today. Not impressed at all

The camera wants to expose a little bright to help control noise that you'll get from a small sensor. I'll take a bit of noise for a darker exposure. So to that end, I'll probably shoot manual. All I really need to do is set a minimum shutter speed and adjust ISO from there when I open the camera. That can all occur pretty fast.

Auto is NOT consistent. With that being said, I've been getting better pictures, but still taking multiple pictures with different focal points to make sure I get at least one good pic of what I want. Auto works well sometimes, just needs consistency. Obviously the camera is capable of taking great pictures in almost any setting. Even low light. The hardest is when you have a very bright source of light somewhere and auto doesn't do well unless you find the right focal point, and that being where I have to take multiple pics the most. Manual can work too, but I'm not even an amateur photographer so I've been practicing to get better pictures with less adjusting. And by that I mean dialing it in less and getting the pic I want faster from practice and skill rather than paying around experimenting. It's been a learning curve for me and quite a few others. I'm quite sure a firmware update can help.
Also, I am used to my note 4 taking g great pics with auto. Also used to the extra sharpening. I've noticed the extra sharpening and do prefer more natural pictures like the lg or iPhones take. But otoh, many of my pictures at work benefit from the extra sharpening big time and kind of why I don't mind it. That extra sharpening is very very useful when magnification is needed at magnifying glass level and sometimes almost microscopic levels for very fine print, certain details on a board or power supply and especially both those reasons I'm very hard to reach places without taking everything apart.
With that being said, I also wish LG would add a toggle for sharpening when processing the pictures in auto and manual mode. Even though LG leans towards more natural pictures, a sharpen toggle would help a lot. I've just decided to keep using my v20 as a daily driver by a very slim margin. Miss my amoled and adblocking. Don't miss all the extra tweaking I had to do manually along with xposed to get my note4 the way I wanted. LG has caught up alot in their UI. It used to be terrible. But with the theme and some of the options I could live with root just to get adblocking. But when I do root I will be doing so.e tweaking g to get more battery life. And hopefully a kind developer will make a kernel with only voltage control enabled so I can under volt my CPU some.
The problem is the massive herd of Samsung users (I am one also) that were able to just point and shoot. The software did the all the work on the sammy phones. With the V20 we have to work a little to get a great picture. I noticed it today when taking a picture for of my receipts for the headphone deal.

It is pretty consistent, you just have to understand what it is consistently doing. It's just running a program like anything else. It doesn't do things on a wild hair. That said, if you want more sharpening, I highly suggest Snapseed. It's a free app after Google bought the parent company Nik. Nik makes some of the best plug-ins for professional editing of photos. This is probably one of the more powerful photo editing apps you can get on a phone. It even edits RAW photos from the V20.

I guess since I do a lot of photo work, I'm used to the idea that no camera will ever spit out a shot that's perfect right out of the box, auto or not. (Not even the three Samsungs I owned, they needed just as much adjustment as any other phone.) All images out of a camera can and do need work. For me, I feel that I don't really need to do anything out of my ordinary workflow to get images I want with the V20. I'm actually really looking forward to capturing some more classic images with this phone that haven't been achievable in recent times by most sensors these days.
It gives you a lot more options but most people don't want that. Hell I don't even want that. If I am taking a picture with my phone it just needs to get the job done. Anything else I would be using my 80D. By the way thanks for understanding and decoding those terrible sentences I wrote.

That's the thing though, this phone is made for content creators, not for someone who wants to just shoot in auto all the time. That's what iPhones and Pixels are for, not this phone. This is for those who want and know how to control photo, video and audio creation. I've got full frame DSLRs, smaller mirrorless cameras but I also like to have control over my cellphone so this was a great step in my opinion.
That's fine, but a lot of people were forced here by the Note 7 blowing up. Android people don't want iPhones and not many people buy their phones outright (Pixel). When the top gun gets taken out it makes for a weird environment when people are forced to fill gaps with things they really don't want. There is the edge 7 but it's smaller and the edge screen was trash. Like I said it's a solid phone and is faster than the Note 7. It's just missing somethings I am used too.
