So I see on nightlies there is a CM-11 Official AT&T 4.4 Kit Kat for the GS4. How can this be? If it's official then why the need for CM? And if run is running CM, then why Kit-Kat?. I thought CM was a ROM in itself?

Official means that Cyanogen officially supports the ROM and it is not a port.
4.4 means it is the Android version it is based off of.

Ok, thanks. I'm almost ready to press the button on CM.org's installer. Is it true that I first need to download the GApps zip, because I'll lose all my Google Apps? And I have also seen instructions that say to boot into CWM recovery and wipe data/factory reset... But those instructions were for downloading a CM zip to the extSD and then installing it from recovery mode. I'm wondering if I need to do all that if I'm just going to be using the OneClick installer

I don't know anything about the one click. I don't use CM. It is best to follow the instructions from where you found it. Also, I see you are on the i337. What firmware are you on. If it is MF3 or newer, you will not be able to install CM.

Go back to the Safestrap Discussion thread. There is a list of compatible ROMs. It is entirely up to you what to run.

Im trying to go from mf3 stock 4.3 rooted to 4.4 based roms using safestrap. I understand I need to flash the rom as well the gapps package. Do I need to flash any modules or build props? Would love an answer as I have read many forums and havent found the answer? The rom im trying to flash is unofficial carbon 4.4.

You can't get 4.4 unless you have mdl firmware.

If you are in new bootloaders; NB1 or NC1, you can only install TW roms.
