Two Apps with the same name allowed? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So quick question... I have my Galaxy S4 stock from AT&T and it already had a photo editor pre-installed, which is fine and dandy because I like it and use it on occasion. I was looking thru apps and wanted to install an app called Photo Editor and it hit me - it's the same name as the one pre-installed on my phone.
I checked and there is a directory already created on my phone called Photo Editor for the existing app. Would there be a conflict if I install the other app I want? Seeing as they are both called "Photo editor" and assuming the new app I want to install will also want to create a directory called Photo editor...?
Suggestions?
~Maria

many apps have the same title. however, the package for each app needs to be unique within the play store. you should be all set.

I just installed it without a hitch. Thanks again!

[Q] Third Party Launcher Themes

I'm busy teaching myself to make themes for Go Launcher, but I guess my question applies to all 3rd party launchers that have theme capabilities. I need to find a way to get the package name for each application on my phone (and other commonly used applications) so that I can assign custom icons for each one. I know you can get the name from each packages AndroidManifest.xml but these don't always work, and in the case of built in applications (like the Motorola Media Gallery) I have no access to the apk itself.
To be a bit more clear, here is an example:
for Skype the package name is:
com.skype.raider
but the icon gets assigned to:
com.skype.raider.ui.SplashScreenActivity
(i got this from a tutorial, but they don't say where they get their info)
Check the /data/data folder. The folder names there might be helpful.

stock video editor feature??

I goggled and haven't found any discussion regarding this "video editor" thing. There is an edit option when viewing videos. Once I tap on it, it says I'll need to download it. .. but when I click on download nothing happens. have any of you ppl notice this feature and does it work for yall? here are the screenshots:
The stock video editor is not included out of the box. You should be able to download it from the screen you posted a shot of but make sure:
You have an account with Samsung Apps.
You are signed into your account with Samsung Apps (on your phone). You can get to Samsung apps by going to the APK shortcut in the app tray on your phone.
Your "Samsung Push" app is up to date. (Not sure if this is a must, but it can"t hurt)
The app is simply called "Video editor" and it is located in the "Entertainment" section.
It will be nearly 115 MBs.
You can also go to Samsung Apps on your PC and navigate to the Editor, but I am not sure if Samsung Apps works like the play store or not. You might need to do it from you phone.
Good luck.
The problem was that I had disabled Samsung apps and account. Thanks

(Req) S PLANNER app from note 2

This is a second request so that if some great mind here can help me install the s planner from note 2 to my rooted note 3
Please consider me a noob and give step by step instructions.
Please . This new s planner is such a waste.

as far as I can tell, GNIII S Planner is the same as GNII's, but only with different color theme. they replaced the 3D brown theme with a simpler white/green flat theme.
Only difference I realized is in the Month view, it now shows dots (one per event) instead of showing the even title itself, which was not even practical as it showed only first word or so, and only 2 events. all you have to do is to click the day and show details below.
it is not a waste. but just themed differently, however I can understand if some people like the old shape, I certainly do. but functionality wise, almost the same.
There is huge amouny of difference between the s planner of note 2 and note 3. The most important beibg
1. When adding event or task in the older s planner there were options to add a S NOTE or an image . It was productive and practical for daily use.
2. Hovering the s pen over a date in month view, an option to add a handwritten note appeared which again was so productive and practical.
Both the above options are missing in the newer s planner.
Hence the request.

I can not believe Samsung removed the Task widget on de Note 3 (along with other functionalities on the whole S-Planner) .... It was the most useful tool to me and I assumed for granted It would be on the Note 3 ... I can hardly imagine the reasoning sequence that led the programmers to think that S-Planner was too good and complete so it needed to be shrunk
I, too, would like to know how to do this. See also this thread for more information.
Here are the steps I did:
1) Rooted GN3 using Root de la Vega method
2) Mounted /system as R/W (using ES File Explorer - Root Explorer)
3) Renamed GN3 Splanner to SPlanner_gn3.apk
4) Copied Note 2 S Planner apk to Note 3 /system/app directory
5) Changed its permission to 644 (rw-r--r--)
6) Rebooted
Despite this, I still don't see the GN2 version of SPlanner anywhere (not in the list of apps, drawer, etc.). When I click on the SPlanner shortcut, it still brings up the GN3 version. What steps am I missing?

I think you need to move the original apk out of /system/app - the app id is defined in the manifest and is independent of the file name. In this case the package name is com.android.calendar. If you add the S Planner apk from Note 2 and keep the original apk (althougth renamed) it will still be a duplicate package name.

I don't even see an "S Planner" in my app drawer. What are you guys talking about?

Thanks for the advice. I moved the original GN3 apk out of /system/app and then rebooted again. However, I still cannot open the GN2 SPlanner on the GN3. It simply doesn't show up anywhere. Would wiping the dalvik cache help?
Anyone with any solution?

Unfortunately, I don't think the GN2 SPlanner will run on the GN3. It could be an issue of a Samsung software signature not matching. As I wrote, I tried basically everything I could think of to try and get it to work, with no luck. Hopefully, someone else out there has a solution.
There's three things about the GN3 version that I don't like:
1) Full-screen mode. Ugh...how am I supposed to see what time it is and the battery level? Yes, I know can temporarily touch the top of the screen to have it display the status bar, but this is only temporary.
2) Inability to set default reminder time. Now everything defaults to 15 minutes, which results in me having to set the reminder for each new task manually. Total pain.
3) I don't like how they changed the month view. I preferred the GN2 version where I saw both a listing of the day's tasks inside each day box, as well as listed below.
Time to go look at an alternative 3rd-party solution, I guess...
same issue- slightly different question?-noob
GS3 w/ OS 4.4 safestrap - touchwhiz rom- somehow all my system apps like splanner/ clock and gone- they are in several backups on my internal and external (SD) and i can see them in root explorer - how can i get them to load- I am a total noob- patience and language for a 5 year old is needed, thanks !

Shortcut to launch Google apps? (Play Music, Movies)

I've been trying for hours now to do the simplest thing. I need some way to make a shortcut to these apps that is its own standalone APK. Here's why:
The long version: I have a Logitech Harmony Hub. It won't launch apps on the Nexus Player directly, but I have a workaround that involves installing Multilanguage Keymap Redefiner on the Nexus Player, and sending a keyboard command that I've mapped to trigger a specific app. For example, sending F1 launches Netflix. This works flawlessly for just about every app, but the exceptions are Google's own apps (Google Play Music and Google Play Movies). When I map a key to launch one of these two apps, nothing happens.
The short version: My Harmony Hub won't launch them directly.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Attempt: Creating an app with Tasker on my phone that launches the app in question. Basically cloning the app.
Result: This works on my phone to launch it, but once I install the app on the Nexus Player, it does nothing. Perhaps the Android TV version of the app is different from the phone version in such a way that it won't allow this to work.
Attempt: Installing Tasker on the Nexus Player so I could attempt the same steps as above, but from the Nexus Player
Result: Can't install Tasker - no way to accept the disclaimer on Android TV because it's not visible (accessibility settings don't help)
Attempt: Backing up Tasker on my phone using Helium, then installing Helium to restore a backup of Tasker that has already accepted the disclaimer.
Result: Tasker won't back up with Helium. It just creates an empty .json file. Everything else seems to back up fine, of course...
Attempt: Installing TV App Repo, and creating a shortcut to the apps in question
Result: unable to create the shortcuts because the apps in question are not downloaded, but are rather preinstalled.
Attempt: used this website: http://atvlauncher.trekgonewild.de/ to try to create an APK from the respective packages.
Result: According to the "apps" section of the Nexus Player settings, the package name for Google Play Music should be com.google.android.music, however, this did not work. Neither did com.google.music, com.android.music, or come.google.android.music.tv. When I say "didn't work," what I mean is that in each case, it said the package was not found. I thought this was odd since I used the same package name as what was shown in the Nexus Player's settings on the first try. If anyone knows the correct package names for these two apps, that may be the solution to the problem.
"Shortcut" apps won't work, because Multilanguage Keymap Redefiner will let you map commands to launch apps, but not shortcuts. Needs to be a standalone app. If anyone knows any other method besides the one I've proposed that will launch the apps in question with a single key press, I'd love to hear it. I know this is an obscure request, but it seems so simple and I'm really frustrated at this point. Not the type to give up at something like this, there's got to be a way, but I can't find it. As a side not, my Nexus Player is not rooted, and I'd really prefer not to go that route if there is any other option. Thanks in advance.

Any way to make stock Miflavor rom let me choose any app to select my file?

I have a few irritating gripes with this stupid software. Aside from certain things not in landscape mode, clipboard not being able to save more then one copied text, my biggest gripe is the system not allowing me to choose the app of my choice to select a specific file! Something that's so simple, fluid and normal on all Galaxy phones and probably any other. For example, when using what's app I want to select a file that the gallery app can't find but the stupid stock UI won't let me select any other app. Only 2 others aside from gallery that have nothing to do with selecting a picture or any other type of file. Does this iterate anyone else and do you have a workaround? Thanks.
Try installing another file explorer but don't specify which is default when it asks, just use something to open the file. You'll get as many options as the system allows.
I use fx File Explorer. One of the best available. If you use fx to navigate to the file you may also get another option via fx to deal with the file.
The issue is likely just the Android OS, not the ZTE software. I find it behaves normally compared to other phones. If you compare to a Samsung, it's probably the Samsung being different. They add so much extra stuff in them that once you start installing extra apps, using apps etc it starts filling cache and bogs the system down more than a more stock, lighter system will.

Thanks will try.

Thanks for the reply, I will try it out. I've never heard of fx I've been using es forever. I just figured I can use quickpic app as a gallery alternative so now I'll try this file manager. But the problem always persist and answering your question, no it doesn't ask me which file manager or app I wanna use for certain actions. Maybe and hopefully this helps. Thanks.
Hi @Wanabedev83,
Would you like to post your screenshot here?
I might experience the same problem, yet I have fixed it. So if it's OK, I would try to help you. Pls post the screenshot.
Thanks in advance!
