Just got my first smartphone (Galaxy SIII) - feel like my grandma trying to use a PC

I don't wanna get into the really insider stuff like custom roms. I'm just trying to understand basic functionality and must-have/killer apps (just like the indispensable VLC, 7zip etc. on the PC).
I'm really a complete newbie on the GUI and I'm trying to catch up on things. Basic things, like reaching a particular screen take me a while, and I'm sure there are faster ways to do certain things.

lol, I know what you mean man, I got mine almost a month ago and I was an iphone 4 user, so its a huge change to be honest, I've found this video quiet helpful to teach you why the S3 is different from other phones and what samsung did to it to make it a unique android experience.

As for Apps, its really up to you, their is no best or worst apps, but how they can fit your lifestyle, you can go to the google play store and check out the top apps and see how they work, a bit of them have video previews too to help you understand how they work. I hope this helps you begin you long journey

What do you mean with reaching a particular screen? You either scroll left or right, or use two fingers to pinch and see all home screens. If you want to reach settings you press the menu button left to the hardware home button and choose "settings" or scroll down the notification bar and press the cogwheel icon.

But the stock media player supports a lot of formats.
For 7zip I would instead recommend ES File explorer, it is a file manager with built in zip/rar support. The file support with android is in my opinion what makes it superior to iOS. The file structure is more like on a PC with windows or any linux dist. I know that most of the stuff I do with my phone can't be done at all or without hassle in any other mobile OS.

I only mentioned 7zip and VLC because they are pretty much considered must-have for any fresh OS re-install - not because I'm looking for similar functionality on mobile. I'm wondering if there are apps that are at that status for Adroid. Stuff that doesn't come preinstalled but you put it on every Android device because it just too good to miss.

These are my first apps to get, then you go on from their for me. I'm not sure if you are familiar with whatsapp , its the most used messaging app on all platforms, it works with iphone windows phones blackberrys nokias and of course androids, it will automatically check your contacts list and find out who from your list has whatsapp installed already. I've got more than 100 contacts on it, and its push notifications so u get them instantly even if the app is closed

[OT] What Legacy Apps Do You Use?

This was part of a discussion I had with a friend lately. I argued that windows 8/RT desktop environment looked fug-ugly compared to WP8/ModernUI and that it needed a MAJOR overhaul. Because TBH windows still looks generally the same now, as it did 10-15 years ago & is only really optimised for displays that are 13-24". But the thing is I see windows going to larger displays (HTPC's and Living Room PC's) and smaller ones (Handsize tablets) and windows on these displays just doesn't function nice.
However, my friend argues that they couldn't change the entire UI/UX of the desktop environment because too much legacy stuff will look out of place and be confusing. I understand this may be the case in a business environment where loads of a wide range of diverse and unique tailored software is used BUT I don't think it's a problem for the average home PC user.
The way I see it is that most people only use a couple of different applications on their home PC/laptop and I'm pretty sure it's only a handful of applications would need updating to the new UI for consumers to not have headaches.
So I was wondering, what do you actually run on a day-to-day basis?
Here's mine.
DAILY:
Chrome
VLC
Office
Adobe Reader
Dropbox* (Doesn't have a UI :laugh: )
That's mine! If MS came up with a much more unified ModernUI inspired desktop, I would only need 5 developers to update their app to the same style and I'd be happy.

All the major web browsers (everything from IE to Opera), not that web browser developers have been respecting their platforms' UI conventions for the last few years anyhow.
Office (mostly Word, OneNote, and Outlook).
Pidgin.
Steam (not that its terribly respectful of UI conventions either).
Windows Explorer (obviously built-in, but the TIFKAM "replacements" are crap unless you have reallllly fat fingers and no mouse).
Various terminal apps (cmd, powershell, bash, etc.).
Visual Studio.
A bunch of others that aren't "every day" but are needed for my job and such, although they rarely get run on my home system.
A bunch of full-screen games, but I suppose those don't count.

On my Acer W510, I've installed:
Chrome - works better than IE with AirDroid for connecting w/my Android phone
iTunes - still use my 7 y/o iPod in my car
Zune - can download 10 drm-free songs monthly on the grandfathered Zune pass subscription
Dropbox
Google Drive
Skydrive - can't upload folders w/the Win store app

PuTTY (It could be ported, though I think it would work far better as a window)

Chrome already has (a really poor, is just the desktop browser without any options) Metro browser, Firefox has a beta version that looks and acts like an Android app. Gabe Newell is ****ting his pants over Windows 8 because it cuts him out of game sales completely: the Windows Store is already Steam. I don't know what Mumble is. There is already a third-party Pandora client that is excellent. There are already multiple IRC clients for Windows Metro. A TTY app needs to be Windowed? You really believe that? I run PuTTY on my eMate, let's be real here. VLC is begging for money so that they can decide how and when they want to make a VLC for Metro. I have already moved to MPC-HC and CCCP. I think you will see something like XBMC for Metro before any of the others because it is more portable in terms of being self-contained and not needing to hose down the system with files and registry entries to operate correctly.

Gabe Newell is going crazy because of competition. The Store is not replacing Steam, the games in it are at a different level (mobile casual games) than the desktop games from Steam.

While I'm sure there are a lot of people who don't use their PC's for much beyond e-mail and the web, I think you're vastly underestimating the number of people who DO use more than just a handful of basic applications.
On a typical day, I use:
At least 3 to 4 programs from the Adobe Master Collection, and I need frequent access to all but maybe 3.
Several 3D programs including LightWave 3D and Luxology Modo.
SmartFTP
Virtualbox
Tight VNC client
All the major web browsers
Several small utilities like notepad++, Media Player Classic, etc.
That's my biggest criticism of the new UI - it pretty much assumes no one does anything productive with their computers. If Microsoft truly thought it was the future, why isn't Office fully Metro complaint? Because a touch UI is simply not an efficient way to control applications with ANY degree of complexity.

I appreciate this thread, as I am considering what I really do with my legacy apps that I can't do on rt. I use office, and adobe, but really on a day to day basis that is really it. Office 2013 works with metro ui, so I wonder just how beneficial legacy apps, other than games that are desktop, are going to be in the future. I have the Sammy Ativ smartpc 500t btw. I love it, but really dig the look and design of the surface. RT made me go with the intel run tablet, and I know the surface pro is coming out, but a bit pricey. Anyway, as I say, the two main legacy apps I use are office and adobe.

I posted those on that list regardless if they were ported or not to Metro.
Steam is better than Windows 8's games purely because of the already-established userbase/games
Mumble is a VoIP solution geared towards gaming
The third-party Pandora client, while decent, still has some standby issues on Windows RT. I'm hoping the official client (if/when it comes out) will have these solved.
Yes, I believe an SSH client is better off windowed. It's nice to be able to have a web browser and multiple SSH clients open on one screen. Also, there's no need to be condescending over a matter of preference.
VLC is looking for aid to help pay off the development costs for a totally-free app they produce, I don't think it's unreasonable for them to ask. MPC-HC requires codec packs (such as CCCP), whereas VLC has their codec packs bundled in, making an easier all-in-one install. I do agree that XBMC is a likely candidate for being ported first.

Unless I'm mistaken (which I could be), Office 2013 does not work in metro - it's run from the RT desktop ui, so it's not really a "metro" application.
And when you say you use Adobe, what do you mean by that? It could refer to anything from Adobe Acrobat reader to Photoshop, After Effects and the rest of their graphic applications.
If you just use Acrobat Reader, there probably is, or will shortly be, a fully metro compliant reader, so that wouldn't be a problem. But if you use one of Adobe's graphics programs, there isn't, and I can't see there ever being, Metro and/or RT versions. First, the ARM architecture just doesn't offer the performance needed for the type of work Adobe's applications were designed to do. And second, the Metro/touch ui just doesn't facilitate the on-screen information density needed for the amount and intracasy of the tools.
Adobe may make "Touch" apps for Metro/RT similar to Photoshop Touch on iOS, but that's extremely limited in features and capabilities.
So if you need to use any of Adobe's main graphics programs, there's your decision right there - RT is out. If you just need to view PDFs, aside from the previously mentioned Office, then RT is a viable option.

Apps we miss!

Symbian Sxx, Windows CE, IOS, Android, etc...
I tried them all but didn't find the ... how to say it.... yes cheeriness & easiness which I found in my new WP8 devices!
but yet, I still feel like I'm left behind, because all of the missing Apps like (Instagram, Whoshere, Tumblr, Keek)
It is true that whatsapp has shortened the distance but it has its flaws like:
1- can't read long messages
2- no broadcast
3- can't save videos to my library
4- slowness
5- can't forward messages to recent contacts
and other things...
I tried to find if whether these application are coming to WP8 or not by contacting the official websites and twitter accounts but no luck!

Yea, I have tried to log a couple of questions with WunderList and SpringPad on their forums/email and the response is working on it. Wunderlist does have an app in the WP8 Store but it's not available/compatible for my phone.

I really would like to have TapaTalk (because BoardExpress, ForoPlex and ForumTalk just don't work for me), and TeamViewer.

I would really like a SiriusXM app. That and Google+ integration (just like how Facebook and Twitter are integrated).

I would also love it if the phone had separate "audio profiles". For example, if I plug in a pair of headphones, all the volume should automatically adjust to the settings I had it on last time I had headphones plugged in. Then when I unplug them, the volume should all revert back to what it was set to before.
Also, also a Sonos app would be fantastic!

I can tell you that my next phone won't be a Windows Phone.

While I am not trying to change your oppinion, why do you need the official "4pics1Word" app? It's not a multiplayergame and there are multiple similar games on windows phone ("What's The Word" for instance).
Also, there are dropbox clients for windows phone as well. There's boxfiles for dropbox, there's Filebox and there are others as well. And they work. Why do they not suffice?
Draw Something 2: I got fed up with Draw Something after 2 weeks. What does DS2 do better than DS?
Even Though I do not use instagram I can see how people might want that. Same goes with snapchat for me. I just do not see the use-case for me (appart from sexting), but those are two big names that are missing on WP, alternatives (like Lomogram or Picit) don't cut it because they are incompatible with the already existent userbase on android and ios.

For me it would have to have the core apps properly sorted and fully functional. As an additional minimum a decent calendar and address book that can sync with my carddav and caldav servers, a good email client, a good voip client for starters.

Plus ensure that the kernel can support Ethernet adapters and USB devices for keyboard and mouse.
Then this low end phone suddenly can become a thin client machine when docked at the desk.
Handy for work purposes.
Perhaps also add VPN capability through a further app.

WOW that is one big list you have there my friend. But it seems to me you want your firefox to be an android phone.....
Don't get me wrong most of the apps you mentioned are "top of the class" apps in an android phone.
But I believe this os isn't android....yes if some of the above apps devs want to port their apps to firefox that's fine by me, it would be great though to see new devs working in this os even if that spell out building apps that in a sense do or have the same functionality like their android counter parts.
But rest assured you would see a lot of junk apps just like android has, and by junk I mean add supported apps, and a lot of wanna be coders that make unusefull apps with adds just to make easy bucks!
For me the list is simple:
1. A decent multi email client (if only Mozzila haden't kill thunderbird project it would had been cool to see a thunderbird app in firefox os).
2. A decent native file manager (not like the native one that samsung phones have)
3. A VLC port.
4. A songbird port.
5. An Open/Libre Office port
You see where I am getting with this!?
All the rest are cosmetic addons sort of speak with apps that have no intelligent functionality.

Actually, if they were to make the same thing from the iOS app, after all, the FFOS browser is just an interface, so a FFOS Chrome would be able to sync and all that stuff easily.

I'm making a file manager, it's on github too. I'm still looking out for the best solutions for it right now, because the APIs are still too limited, so the best I could get was actually getting all files and parsing the folders from their names. Empty directories, for instance, will be invisible, hence the file manager would only be helpful to open downloaded files and maybe some basic interaction.

Meh, just need a JS interface to access native content, no need for another interpreted language like PHP.

There are two apps that I'll be looking to install on my future Firefox OS device which will make the device fully functional for my needs:

As far as app ideas goes, I'd like to see:
1.) A simple app that tells me if I should bring a rain-coat today based on when I'm out working and when I'm home, either as a stand-alone app or integrated with a weather app.
2.) Javascript playground! What wouldn't be more fun than writing Javascript on a Javascript-driven device? (A tad bit of sarcasm in there, but it'd still be fun (well, it depends on the person)!)
And for already existing apps on other platforms, I want:
1.) Duolingo - Free language education app (I believe that it's already written in HTML5+CSS+JS and is just wrapping it).
2.) Google Keep - Google's non-stock note app for Android.
3.) Google Calendar - I can't exactly replace it, at this stage of long-term usage...
As much as I love the Firefox OS project, I'm still a Google fanboy and I still use most of their services (fully knowing and accepting that Google logs everything I do).

Ringtone Maker and GO Battery Saver & Widget would be nice to see.

[Q] Help getting the best use of my Nexus 10

Hi All
Please bear with me, as this post might get a bit long. But I'd like to provide as much info as possible in order to get the best help (hopefully).
So why'd I get the Nexus 10? Well I was eyeing it out for a few weeks but it was out of stock. Finally we went to John Lewis to buy me a Nexus 7 for my birthday, but while there, we tried the Galaxy Note 10.1. I absolutely loved the Polaris Office and the handwriting recognition. So I foolishly thought this was stock on all Nexus and when I checked online, the Nexus 10 32GB was back in stock. So I bought that instead.
So when I got the tablet I was understandably excited But the more I used it, the more disappointed I got. From trying to setup the email to searching for apps. So I am now on the fence about keeping it or sending it back because just about everything I want to do is just not simple and straight forward and productive. BUT I love the screen and the build and the spec. So I'm here desperately trying to find the tools to get the best out of the tablet so I don't have to send it back
I think now is the time to say, this is not an Android bashing or Android vs iOS/iPad argument. I want to stick to my Nexus 10, but I just need to get the best out of it.
So what do I want to get out of it?
* reading eBooks. I think I've finally found a suitable reader in moon+ reader. I've tried all the other free readers and either they don't zoom images or the options are rubbish.
* browsing the web - I've tried all the popular browsers, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Dolphin, Puffin, Boat, Ocean, Maxthon. All except Chrome are missing the function I need the most, the ability to have all my tabs still open when I go to launch the browser again. Chrome is the only one that does this, but it has crashed SEVERAL times already in the last few days. To the point of causing 100% CPU (according to cool tool and lack of responsiveness). I'd also like an "almost" or as close to desktop browsing experience as possible. There's no point having the larger screen if I just keep getting redirected to the mobile versions of sites.
* Email - the built in email client is pants and incomplete. I need to have access to my Gmail and to my exchange mailboxes, which I do. But I can't access any of my sub folders in my exchange mailboxes. The other problem is you can't archive gmail emails and for some stupid reason, deleting mail from the gmail mailbox moves the email into an "Imap/deleted" tag, rather than the Gmail bin. Even the stock iOS mail app does this and I'd have expected something on Android to be even better. Using the Gmail app is not an option as it's slow and I'd rather use one app. Oh! My other problem with the default mail app is that when you open an email in landscape, it only uses about 2/3 of the screen for the actual email. What's the point in that? Oh, and when you setup the email account, you get the option to sync tasks, but I can't see a tasks app. It also seems to "wrap" text at 80 characters, but it wraps by cutting part of the words, rather than wrapping an entire word.
* RDP - I need to access my work PC using RDP and without having to install some other "host" software which most/all of the apps I've tried so far require. 2xClient seems ok, but Zooming in causes all the font to be grainy. iTap seems good, but is not free.
* Editing word and excel documents - I've only found Kingsoft Office, as all the others aren't free. But Polaris Office looked SOOOO much better.
* Notes - no built in notes app. Any recommendations?
* SSH, Ping, Traceroute - TBH I haven't searched for these apps as I've spent a load of time searching for the other apps. So suggestions are welcome
I'm sure I could possibly overcome many of the issues with the stock ROM by installing one of the custom ROMs, but the reasons I haven't done this so far are:
1) I don't want to change the ROM and invalidate the warranty
2) I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the info (even though I'm a pretty proficient tech). I used to load custom ROMs on my windows mobile and I've jailbroken my iphone in order to get other useful tools like the activator and bitesms etc.
3) I just haven't looked long enough to find a good custom ROM. Most of the ROMs threads don't have screenshots and "feature lists"
Anyway, I said this post would be long Thanks if you've read this far and thanks in advance for any help/advice.

OK as far as readers I just use Google books. For browser look for chrome beta as it is muuuuch better than chrome. Office wise king soft is the best you're going to get for free. I personally use office2012 text maker. RDP you can search vnc also. There is one app that is decent but I'm blanking on the name works with vnc and rdp. Notes there is ever note or there is a "floating" note that was developed on xda but again blanking on the name. Finally for ssh etc I say terminal ide has from ssh to vim or for a simpler try connectbot . for ROMs I prefer aokp with kt's kernel visit the forum on a browser not the app theyll usually have screenshots etc. Or check just features of aokp/cm as most are based on those. hope any of that helps

It "was" much better than Chrome. They're both on-par for now (Chrome got the engine updates that Beta had recently).

Thanks for the response. Google books looks great, except it doesn't allow you to add your own books (at least I couldn't find the option).
Also VNC isn't an option for accessing my work computer unfortunately. It's just not as flexible or secure as RDP. I'll have a search for the SSH clients you've mentioned. I've been looking in this forum for the ROMs, maybe I'll just have to go through each of the threads.

Ah didn't know haven't used it at all as of late.
I only mention vnc because the client I'm thinking does both. I looked it up and is called pocket cloud. It asks you to install host stuff but is not necessary to use either rDP or vnc. I haven't actually tried adding my own hah so not sure on that. I prefer terminal ide since it includes a lot of tools. Most useful for me is vim. As for ROMs I suggest Mr Robinson or bigxies aokp pub or task650 aokp or eos or carbon, lots of people also really like rasbean

I had downloaded pocketcloud but then deleted it because I thought it needed the desktop software. I've just tried it and the free version is alright though it doesn't scale too well in the free version. I've tried 2xclient but it makes Outlook 2013 really blurry when zoomed in. I now have to decide if I'm going to spend the money on the pro version of iTap or Pocket Cloud or Jump Desktop or AccessToGo or the free RemoteToGo. Either way I think I have some good choices/options now

I've just installed this and had a quick play and it looks almost perfect. I think it will be perfect once I've rooted.

Thanks. I also saw ParaAndroid (hopefully spelt that right) and I am working up the courage to change the ROM
I also discovered UC Browser from one of the other threads in the Apps forum and I must say I am actually liking it so far. It has gestures, is quick and smooth and it remembers all the tabs I had open. It also has a very nifty floating button/toolbar which is customizable and gives me the option to scroll to top (something that iOS provides by clicking on the toolbar in any app - I use mouse gestures in Windows so this is something I personally use).
I also discovered (albeit by mistake) that the stock email app does indeed show/support subfolders in exchange accounts. You simply need to double click the folder and it will expand the sub folders. Joy! It's now good enough to do the job and I can get used to the other differences/quirks.
Thumb keyboard does indeed look good, but it's not free. I don't really want to spend money on something I may not like. I am currently trying FloatNSplit which is similar but doesn't seem to have all the features of Thumb Keyboard.
I think with a custom ROM and a few more tweaks, I may actually start to properly enjoy my Nexus 10.

Thanks. I'll have a look. Hopefully they have a trial. But I watched a video of the Galaxy Note 10.1 mail client and it seems to have all the features that the stock client in Android is mssing. Is there any way of getting that client for free?
I am still torn between keeping my nexus 10 because of its great screen and specs or to send it back and get a galaxy 10.1 for its awesome S-Pen & productivity features/tools

For me, at work, I rely on rules in Exchange to route messages to different folders. Then, I assign different sounds to the different senders/folders. I also need to be sure my message notifications are always being pushed to the phone, no matter what folder they land in. Touchdown allows for all of this. Its expensive at $19, luckily I was able to expense it to my work. But after using Touchdown there is absolutely no way I could go back to the stock versions of email, etc..
