[Q] Media scanner not scanning - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I can't seem to get the media scanner to scan. I've tried downloading apps that allow you to manually scan but no luck.
Has anyone else had this problem? It's playing havoc with the fact that I can't access media files such as notifications and ringtones.
Help please!

OK, so I swapped with an old card and put the original one back in just to see if that triggered something, and after the reboot media scanner is back, now it keeps running indefinitely.
I'm sick and tired of this stupid technology. Android should be managing it's media index on the fly as things change, not scanning everything just in case something has been added. It's one of the bitter disappointments of Android...

Downloaded SDRescan.. deleted all videos and messed up gallery app :(

So like i said in the title, i used the app SDRescan to force my phone to rescan media because i found that the gallery app was not automatically refreshing when i added new media to the phone.
I ran the app and a couple minutes later it finishes. Turns out it deleted ALL the phones videos (luckily no pictures). But the problem im having now is that the gallery app is not detecting any media on my phone. There are still pictures, and i readded a lot of my videos back, but the app is showing no media on the phone
I force closed the app, cleared it's data etc. I even formated my sd and put the files back on. Still it shows i have no media.
I thought about taking a new picture with the camera to see what would happen then, and guess what, now it shows i have 1 picture in the gallery. Is there a way i can get the gallery to see the other 1000 pictures i have taken? And all my videos?
edit: i downloaded the stock android gallery app but its the same in that app too. So it's not just HTC's app. Somehow android isnt recognizing my old media.
anybody? this is really killing me.
edit: did a factory reset and the problem persists What's have i done!
hmmmm this is an interesting one. ive had this before but i couldnt remember how i fixed it ...
what ROM are you using, or are you stock ?
SDRescan did nothing to your phone. Your are having problems with the stock Android Media Scanner in your phone. SDRescan does nothing else but notifies the Media Scanner to do it's job on demand, instead of on-boot or SD card mount. That's all it does.
So in short you are having problems with Android Media Scanner, try to look around in this area. I seen few reports on internet when media scanner deleted some files.

I figured the problem lies with the media scanner so I went into Settings > Manage Applications > Media Storage > clear data... but nothing changes.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3692
Isn't this your problem ?
I did have a .nomedia folder on my phone with some videos in and those were deleted. But also the videos in my DCIM folder were deleted. However im over that, my problem is that media scanner isnt picking any media.
I thought i would try another microsd card i had in my sister's mp3 player, and believe it or not android picked up the media. So somehow i think this SDRescan app damaged my sc card..
No, it didn't. Media Scanner has separate databases for each and every SD card. So it's the database for your old SD card which doesn't work, when you put in a new card a new indexing database was created for the ID of your new SD card.
This has happened to me a few times, all i do is find the file using "ES File Explorer" then select to open it with the default video player and it gets added to my library of videos
It's easy to do for a couple of vids, but not really practical if you've got like 10+

i see. but this index, is it not stored on the phone memory? because a factory reset still hasn't solved the problem. I also formatted the sd card, so shouldn't the phone recognize it as a new memory card then?

I tried that wil ES File explorer, and other explorers i have and it doesnt work for me.
It should. You don't have by any chance .nomedia file in root folder of the SD card, right ?

I do. I'll try delete it and see if that helps
Edit: nope
You deleted it and what did you do next ? Did you started SDRescan or rebooted your phone ? Until the Media Scanner kicks in, there won't be any change.
The point is :
1) if you had a folder with data and then added the .nomedia file to it, then unfortunately thanks to the inner workings of the media scanner the file gets deleted instead of only removing the reference from database
2) the card will get indexed again only at boot, SD card insertion or when you execute apps like SDRescan which start the Media scanner manually.
yes! it works now!! thanks for all your help faugusztin!!
after i deleted the the .nomedia folder i did a restart and the problem persisted, but now (like two hours later) i just thought i would go and check the gallery app again and low and behold all my media appeared. Maybe the media scanner didnt finish or something idk. But im happy now
But i was under the impression that the .nomedia trick only blocks media from within that folder? Why was it blocking all my media?
Anyway thanks for all your help mate. really appreciated.
It does index, but it takes time.
It block media from that folder - and all subfolders. It is a sign which says "nothing to see there" - that includes the subfolders of that folder too. Since you had the file in root folder of the card, it didn't indexed anything.
I was too late...glad you got it sorted supreme.

Music not updating in player

Just recently, new music I put on my card isn't updating in the player. I use PlayerPro, but I've checked with the stock music app (Rubix 2.0), MixZing, and a couple others. All other music still shows up fine.
I've tried rebooting, pulling the card, and running the sdrescan app. I can see the files using Astro.
Thanks.
Try rebooting your phone. I had something like this before and the next day, after I had turned off my phone and turned it back on, it was there

Anyone else?
see if the player has an option in settings that will guide the app to your music folder and refresh.
I had this problem, and my only solution was to get apps with that option.

There is or are corrupt music or video files on the device that force mediascanner too keep scanning because they cannot be recognized or filed.
You could try installing startup manger (or some similar app) to disable mediascanning at boot and Rescan Media Root to enable mediascanning if needed.
Both are in Play.

Check this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050252
It works for me. i'm at 92% battery remaining after 14hrs of standy by (with wifi) now. :good: I've also launched Google Play music and Gallery just to see if it will actually kill it when not in use.
The media server used to take my battery 20% out only after 2-3 hours of stand by.
try it out
Doesn't have any solution ? I have tried delete all my media file (mp3, video, picture,...) and delete all storage but it still scan .When i reboot , it stop scanning but if i take a picture by camera , it scans again
bump

Requirements: Rooted phone WITH init.d support
How to install init.d support
Then use this media_kill zip file and the media server process will be killed every hour (it will not pause music, just kill when there is nothing playing).
And this will solve your problem... I've had it too with corrupt files etc...
Good luck!

Weird. Worked for me.. Do note that it only does this once every hour so you can still have the wakelocks just not as long.
Sorry that was my two cents
Media Scanner drains your battery becasuse youve either just downloaded a photo, copied music onto your device or videos, movies etc. so it keeps trying to scan them and think its corrupt.. kinda
so to overcome this, download this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.clypher.mediascanner
what you do is after copying or downloading any media file onto your device, open that app and refresh....
or better still add its widget to your homescreen and just tap.
This way, it refreshes your media library and media scanner wont deplete battery..
OR.. just reboot your phone.. but that app is way better than rebooting your phone all the time you add new media files to it.

Google Play Music - library not showing up

I cannot get my mp3's to show up in Google Play Music. The are under /storage/emulated/0/Music. I have one song under the Music folder and another folder under Music.
I have wiped data for the app and uninstalled and reinstalled the app.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

Downloaded music doesn't appear in a public folder like that - it's in the app's data folder, partially encrypted (meaning filenames are obfuscated, but play fine once copied).

No I didn't. I just figured I was stupid or something.
I have my music under a folder called Music. It's not buried under another folder. It worked on my Note 3 but not on this phone.

I've had this problem multiple times but can't quite recall how I fixed it. I think I went to settings>apps>options>show system>clear data for media storage and clear data for play music>reboot. If that doesn't work, use a root file explorer(assuming you have root) and look for a .nomedia file in your media directories.

Cleared media storage as well? Hmm. You could try xposed media scanner optimizer if you use xposed and really determined to try and fix this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xposed-xposed-media-scanner-optimizer-t2942609
Yeah, several times.
I gave up and am using Music Folder Player.
I'm on Pure Nexus with no mods.
This was bothering me alot when I was heavy on adding/moving music in my subfolders under my Music folder. There are still some tracks I can't play.
I too tried the clear data clear cache uninstall reinstall etc etc. Sometimes it'll work sometimes it wont. I also took my tracks out of their subfolders and put it all in a general folder sometimes that would work too. Very annoying lol

Poweramp not working properly

try using vlc media player for android it supports lot of file extensions for music.
try the alpha or beta builds, they arent in the play store so you have to google for the apk

I use PowerAmp.
Check your microSD card if that is where your library is.
I haven't had any issues.
try rebooting your phone. I had issues before my replacement that every now and then the android media scanner would stop working and newly added music, ringtones, photos, etc wouldn't show up in the apps or settings until i rebooted the phone. that includes poweramp. it wouldn't' see the new stuff either till reboot. if that's the case maybe a reset would fix the problem. i hadn't had the problem with the replacement phone.

How to know background media files indexing process is complete ? No notifications shown.
I waited for 3 minutes to let that thing happen in background if it's happening at all. I noticed in same settings the data gone up from 0bytes to 15mb and i guess it's done..
Still Poweramp after doing rescan and waited for 20minutes don't really show a change. Songs are seen under all songs. But empty under artist album etc.
Under folder option it shows something else... Attached pics below
