[Q] Poor wifi / bad ping - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Note 3 wifi latency seems much worse than my Note 2:
Note 3: average about 80ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 24.399/78.360/146.363/33.336 ms
Note 2: average about 33ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 2.798/33.371/106.814/30.055 ms
(Both tested at 5ghz/150MB on an Asus RT-N66U running Tomato firmware)
Does that look normal?

I have really poor performance on wifi either, as have many that reported here on xda. I haven't come around to check if it's router / firmware dependent so I would suggest searching for earlier topics on the matter.

Poor Wi-Fi signal strength.

[Q] Wi-fi issue??

Any having wifi issues with their N4? Mine seems to be inconsistant with wi-fi speed. I have 10Mb Dsl at my house and when run speet test several times in a row the results very wildly from 150kb to 10Mb. This is only like 10 feet from the router. Testing with my laptop or my galaxy nexus in the same location give consistant 10 Mb every time. I see it has been reported elsewhere as well, see http://code.google.com/p/android/is...s Owner Summary Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=40306
Lots of people with the issue, check the Q&A section, big thread there.
I found that the Nexus 4 didn't like 40Mhz channel bandwidth setting on my router, the auto 20/40 setting was no good either. Had to use 20Mhz.

[Q] Nexus 7 connectivity issue on home wifi

I have encountered an issue with the wifi connection on my nexus 7. When I go to connect to my home wifi, it claims that I have a link speed of 65 mbps, and yet it proceeds to either 1.)stop in the connection process after it gets to "obtaining ip address" and then it stops trying to connect and says"saved" or 2.) after several attempts it occasionally does connect and the connection speed is ridiculously slow (250kbps when compared to about 20-30 mbps on other devices). I encountered this problem some two weeks or so after the device's purchase. Before then I had no difficulties whatsoever. It was around the two week point when the connectivity got really slow and I had difficulties connecting. When I got the device it was running 4.1.2 jelly bean and since then I have updated to 4.2.1 jelly bean and this has not helped. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions as to why my connection is so slow and what I might do to fix this.
Additional information
My nexus 7 is running a stock rom, unrooted, locked
It is the 32gb model
My router is secured with wpa2
It will connect to other networks (including other networks with wpa2 security), it is only my default network which has a problem
Once again any input is appreciated and if you have any other questions please do not hesitate to ask
I had wifi issues several days ago (I'm into my second week since I bought it), with extremely low speeds or shoddy connectivity.
A couple of things I did:
1) Installed Wifi Analyzer from GooglePlay.
2) Using Wifi Analyzer, I figured out a wifi channel which wasn't so heavily used in my apartment (there's about 20 hotspots around me). 1, 6, or 11. I now use 11. This didn't work, but it might for you. Even if it doesn't, it's probably a good idea to set it to the least used channel anyway.
3) I reset my modem to factory settings and reconfigured everything. This fixed my speed and I now have 20-30Mbps consistently. What was different to my original configuration was two settings, which are disabled by default: Block Port Scan Detection and Block IP Flood Detection. Seems like I had inadvertently set these to enabled when I first got my modem. This might be the 'real' fix, but I'm not a networking expert. Maybe just resetting the modem fixed it for other reasons.
My current modem settings:
Mode: 802.11n 2.4GHz
Radio Band: Wide - 40 MHz Channel
Standard Channel: 11
Security: TKIP + AES
SSID Broadcast: Open

[Q] awful Nexus 10 wifi speeds

First time poster here. I've searched all the threads and couldn't find anything on my specific issue.
Had the Nexus 10 for about a week and noticed streaming YouTube and movies was EXTREMELY slow. Slower than my Galaxy Nexus on the same WiFi network (my network speed is about 18-20 Mbps). I finally did a speed test and noticed that my 10 was getting awful results...sometimes 3-6 Mbps while sometimes it'd get up to 10-13. My Galaxy Nexus gets between 14-18 Mbps consistently. For my 10, every speed test fluctuates between 3 to 13 and it's just so inconsistent.
Now, I don't have any connectivity issues. It never drops the signal and I'm always connected, it just goes super slow to the point of YouTube videos not loading.
I'm not a wizz, but I use ATT uverse and use the router they give you. I'm not sure if it's a router issue or a Nexus issue.
I've restarted the nexus, turned off the WiFi optimization and turned the WiFi off and on. I had a ton of issues with my nexus 7 (main reason I switched to 10) and I really don't want to ship the device back to Google. Any suggestions??

For starters when you toggle WiFi optimization you need to reboot for the setting to completely turn on/off.
What ROM / Kernel combo are you using? If that is stock then it is likely the router.
ISP routers are usually cheap, they don't handle multiple device traffic very well. One thing you can do is change the stock/auto settings they come with as they are less than desirable. Lower channels/and or Auto Channel (in both 2.4 and 5 GHz), QoS, software static IP, and even Google DNS can all interfere with your router. First go into build.prop and look for the 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 lines and delete them, reboot. Try that. If issues persist go into router firmware and change all the Auto settings to a preset. Even something as simple as your phone logged on at the same time could interfere if the channel is saturated. Take everything off the WiFi except for the n10 and try that. Getting a 3rd party router with dual band / 802.11n support is ideal.
The least likely issue is that it could be a hardware issue with your n10.

[Q] WiFi Roaming Issues on Verizon Galaxy Note 3

Has anyone noticed issues when roaming between AP's using the Note 3? My wife's Moto X, my old iPhone, and my iPad 3, roams perfectly. However, I can't get the Note 3 to switch APs even when I'm standing next to the antenna (literally -35 dBM signal vs -70 dBm) ! I'm using WiFi Analyzer to grab the radio stats.
AP1 uses both a 2.4Ghz Radio and a 5Ghz radio. All ssid's are the same with the same security. One is on channel 1, other is on channel 6.
AP1 reads about -40 dBm in our bedroom and -72 dBm in my office in the basement.
AP2 reads about -70 dBm in our bedroom and -55 dBm in my office in the basement.
The note 3 never roams to the stronger AP, even when the signal difference is massive. Is this a known problem and are there any workarounds?
Thanks -
Ben

Are AP1 and AP2 identical in all respects? As in, same router make, same model, same firmware release version, and exactly identical configuration settings (except channel)?
If not, then honestly all bets are off; simply put there's more to it than just signal strength. Noise in alternate channel, AP beamforming capabilities (e.g. MIMO), MCS's each AP supports, other STAs participating in the BSSID, etc
Also, is there any reason to care? For instance, if the only traffic you care about is coming from the internet and it is rate capped at less than 11 Mbps, an old 802.11b router will get you about as much throughput as a brand-new 802.11ac router - the "extra speed" is irrelevant in that case since the router is not the rate-limiting behavior. The situation might be different if you are using a DLNA local server for video streaming though - and both routers were wired to the same content server, not connected to the router via wireless.
You should make a throughput comparison, not a signal strength comparison. Turn only one AP on at a time and download a huge file from a laptop or similar which is wired to that router's switch. Hopefully the source can actually stream data fast enough to saturate each router. Doing an experiment like that might be rather revealing if you have different router models.
You might also want to try an experiment where you turn off the favored "weak AP", make sure the N3 associates with the alternate "strong" AP, and then turn the "weak" AP back on to see if the N3 reverts its' association. If it does, there's likely a reason for that. Not that it will be obvious, though.

I am having AP roaming issues as well. Using unlocked Note 3(N9005) on a campus network with 180+ identical centrally-controlled Cisco 1142 access points. No other device on campus is having this issue as far as I can tell (I'm the guy they would complain to).
My own android tablet, ipad, dell laptop, and 20+ various devices I have access to in the office can roam just fine.

Wifi Link speed reducing

I have a H990DS running android 7.0 v10J-IND-XX firmware (build no. NRD90M). Running full stock, no mods.
Recently I noticed that Wifi link speed is reducing to 5 Mbps within few minutes of connecting to my home network. At first few minutes, link speed is 65Mbps after that it is reduced to 5 Mbps. I am sitting at 5-6 feet from the router and the signal is excellent. Not facing the same issue with other mobiles same network.
Tried changing channels in my router but of no use. Please help.
