PEN - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

I have a galaxy note 10.1 2014 and I was wodering if the pen uses any batter power, inside the pen..... like small rechargable battery, since it does have a button to change its actions..... or is it just very similar to a cap. touch pen??

It doesn't require a battery. from what I read, the screen has a special digitizer that powers the pen. Theres a setting to disable the pen Which should save battery on the tablet itself.

Is it me or is the air command feature worthless?
i have to almost touch the pen to the tablet in order for it to work. its easier to just touch the tablet at that point.

S-pen only working on pressure

I lost my stock s-pen and bought an original replacement.
It's treating my device like a resistive screen not capacitive.
Meaning my screen will only register input from the pen if I push down hard on the screen.
Gliding it across the screen does nothing. I need to literally push down to get it to do anything.
What's going on?
..you mean this is not normal behaviour?
I need a new S-Pen, my Life is a Lie.
no. supposed to act like a capacitive.

did you buy a real spen? just making sure it is original
have you tried the usual workarounds like recalibrating the spen (setting orientation of spen from left handed then back to right handed, and touching the four corners of the screen)?
normally loss of screen sensitivity is a hardware issue of the digitizer/lcd panel and not of the spen.
hope you resolve the issue
the spen isn't a capacitive stylus.. it works on separate electromagnetic hardware detection. even mine needs slight pressure to work and i think it's normal behavior.

Hmm because the stock one required much less pressure.
Thanks anyways.

So it only works on pressure not touch?
So my fingers create a capacitive relation with the screen but the stylus creates a resistive?
My opinion is the s pen is inductive (magnetic field), not capacitive (electric field). Definitely not resistive because I can hover above the screen and see the s pen cursor move.

So what are you saying? Is a mere touch (capacitive) enough or pressure necessary (resistive)?

neither. it works due to the specific pen hardware. It's Inductive. The note has the ability to handle capacitive and inductive inputs (but not resistive)
Is this an official s pen replacement? people have used non-spen wacom styluses on the note with no ill effects. might just be a dodgy replacement.

Well it's behaving like its resistive. I need a good amount of pressure.
It's an original Samsung stylus.

I'm not "saying" a fact. I am giving an "opinion" or guess. I'm trying to figure out how the phone knows where the pen is without touching and how the pen gets power. A pickup coil in the pen like those non touch inductive chargers seems to explain everything.

There is actually a thread here on XDA discussing the S-Pen's technology over here with this specific post you might be interested in, about how to adjust the S-Pen's sensitivity.
I just had a glimpse on the thread, there for sure are even more good tips.

Adjust stylus sensitivity

if you're having problems with choppiness, light touches, or having to press hard for your pen to register a touch you can adjust the sensitivity easily.
this search for a fix started when i found my gn2 would stutter when getting into the "zone" and start randomly causing accidental touches. from the gn2 forums i found that the sensitivity can be adjusted via a potentiometer in the pen itself.
on my gn10.1 i found the pen too sensitive. in order to draw the thin lines i had to almost hover over the screen and in doing so i ended up with choppy thin lines. after decreasing the sensitivity i can now draw consistent thin lines after adding just a smidge of pressure.
to adjust the sensitivity you'll need to remove the cover of the click button. a razor should do the job. the fastener is on the back end (towards the samsung logo). a little upwards force and it'll pop off easily. after removing, you'll see two pots. the one on the left is the one you want to mess with (dunno what the one on the right does).
using a small screwdriver turn the pot clockwise 1/8 a turn at a time to decrease the sensitivity, counter clockwise for increase. find the setting that suits you the best and reassemble. this trick kept me from making a trip back to the sprint store and exchanging a phone (no replacement stylus yet).
How did you find out about that?
it was in the gnII forum. no pics there though. he just said pop off the button and adjust the left potentiometer. thought i'd elaborate a bit here.

yep, it just pops back on. put the little notch under the front (towards the pen tip) first then snap it back into place. i've done it with my gn2 and my gn10.1 s-pens so far. i'm pretty sure all wacom pens would be able to be adjusted the same.
Just another little tip while removing the button. Place a piece of scotch tape on the bottom portion of the button. The first time I removed it with a razor blade, it went flying towards the kitchen. Luckily it landed in a dirty glass instead of down the drain.
Great tip!!
Could you please show some photos of the button?
Thanks!

Oh this is great! I wonder if this will work with the Wacom pen we've talked about in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931137
I popped open mine, and the pots are side by side like in the Note Spen. Hm, I don't think the screwdriver I have for my eyeglasses is small enough though.
Don't own a screwdriver small enough. Will try getting one tomorrow. Since putting a screen protector on I find the s-pen less sensitive ; hopefully this will help.

I had an old Lenovo ThinkPad one where I had lost the button and used a rubber pen grip to use with my note when I first purchased it, the sensitivity and offset issue prevented me from using the pen and I had never thought about adjusting the potentiometers until I saw this thread.
I adjusted the sensitivity as detailed and it worked! I still had a problem with the offset where the pen had too much of a distance from nib to where it wrote so I thought to myself, maybe the second potentiometer that we were told not to adjust will resolve this problem and then thought that I've got nothing to lose with this old pen and gave it a shot.
I can confirm that the Pen now works flawlessly as the other potentiometer did indeed adjust the offset.
I now have a pen without the button for when I take intensive notes and no longer will be pressing the side button by accident which used to screw up my notes and was annoying, now it's a thing of the past!
If anyone wants to adjust the second potentiometer, my advise would be that you use the right size screw driver and make small adjustments, test and readjust as per the op.

S-PEN feels loose

I'vehad the Note 4 for a few days and the S-Pen feels quite loose to me. It can even move around a 1mm when in its silo.
I compared it to my friends Note 3 and it felt very tight. It also feels much more tight when inserted with no movement.
Anyone with the same problem?
I'm just concerned that it will get only worse.

I double checked and it's all the way in. If I'm the only one I guess I got a defective one ...

Try putting the pen in with the button facing down. Seems if it's facing up, it does jiggle a little.
It actually feels more firm with button facing down. But it doesn't solve the problem completely in my case
lol, same story here. just wanted to create a tread...
i have 3 note4's at the moment (due to display problems): 2 of them have loose spen, at one device it sits tight like on my note3!
a solution is to put one or two layers of transparent tape around the silver end of the s-pen, although i do not prefer this method
as it looks not good...
I decided to return my device on Thursday since it was actually bothering me, but funny thing is Samsung is still claiming it is not a defect and studying my case. They even went as far as show me another unit with the same problem.
I really hope upcoming batches will have it ironed out.
Does anyone know a solution in fixing the loose s-pen? The one with tape doesn't work out well, and is not really aesthetic...
Have you tried comparong inserting the S-Pen with the button facing up and facing down? I had the same problem on my 10.1 2014 and it was much tighter when the button was facing down in the case. I know it's not a solution, but it might help.

Do about 20 jumping jax with phone in hand. If the spen slips out of place its a defect.
You could then argue it has s heath and should allow you to run with device.
Mine is snug, my Note 3 was a bit loose but it never fell out or anything. I guess if it's inside the silo and doesn't slip out with normal usage it's not a defect.
i added now one layer (one wrung around) of clear tape (which i do not like aesthetically!!), and now the spen sits tight.
button up or down didn't change anything for me...
now, with the pen tight, the device feels a lot more "solid", so for me the loose pen is a defect...
maybe adding a point of glue would also do the trick, i will experiment a little with that...

Can someone define 'loose s pen'? I put mine in pressed in all the way. If I wiggle my finger on it, it slight jiggles, but not to the point where it falls off. I have never noticed this on any note before. I wouldn't say its a defect, but more of an annoyance.

S Pen included with my Note 4
Hi i have 2 seperate questions about the S Pen. 1st. Has anyone removed the button on the pen to try to adjust the potentiometers for sending the pen thinner or thicker? I saw a pic of a note 4 S Pen with the button removed on this forum somewhere 2 days ago & it showed the pen having 2 round very small adjustable screw like things & they where explaining which way to turn the front one to adjust it, but I removed my button just to look at it & in my S Pen there is no adjustment mechanisms at all & there's only one round thing total so I'm just curious to see whether it's the same for all note 4 buyers or not?
2nd. I thought I heard something about Samsung developing & very soon making available for sale a newer updated S Pen for the note 4 & note edge to include Rotation & Tilt which was originally supposed to be included with both phones on release days of each. Does anyone know any info at all about this?

Galaxy Note 5 If S-Pen Is Inserted Wrong Way, Will Break Clicking Mechanism

To all Note 5 users, please be aware of how you insert your spen.
If you slide the spen in backwards, it will get caught and you will not be able to recover the clicking mechanism. The pen will come out with force, but it will become broken in the process.

Can you put oil in your fuel tank and see what happens?
It's true, and the worst part is that spen literally doesn't work, because the phone thinks the spen is inside. That is a pretty bad design flaw
---------- Post added at 11:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:13 PM ----------
Also please take mine and the op work for it. Mine was barely in half way before I realized it was the wrong way and stuck. Some people maybe be lucky and get away with it, do you really want to render the spen useless, or even take a chance
I was reading this and it took me a minute. The clicking end was slid in first? Not sure if people need a warning for that. Sorry for your loss nonetheless.

How do you put it in the wrong way?
Damnit! I just did this while reading xda. I just got this phone on the 22nd. Is this an issue with the S-pen or with actual phone? I'm wondering whether I should just return the phone and get a new phone...
I see what the OP means. Without the Samsung writing facing upwards the pen seems much harder to remove with some form of force. At least from what I just noticed ymmv
I believe OP means putting the pen in with the clicking part first, and the tip of the pen sticking out the bottom. My understanding is that the clicky part gets lodged inside and cannot be taken back out without pulling very hard and breaking it off of the pen.
Yeah can anyone provide some clarity on what OP is trying to say? Does he mean putting the pen in backwards as putting the pen in with the pointy side in first with the Samsung logo of the pen going in facing the camera side of the phone or what?
If you go into spen settings and disable spen detection you can still use spen. This maybe a no Brainer but I haven't used a note since note 2. All my phone's since has been nexus 5, HTC m8 (google play edition) and Nexus 6

If you insert the spen with the clicking mechanism first, the clicking mechanism gets stuck inside the phone and when pulled out with force, breaks off the clicking mechanism rendering the spen completely useless forever, unless you tear open the phone to retrieve it.

Youve redefined the definition of n00b. Congratulations.
If it doesn't break off the end of the pen it will definitely break the small micro-switch that tells the phone the pen is removed. Kind of odd that it's even possible to stick it in backwards. People let their kids use these to doodle on.

Galaxy note 4

I recently have a NOte 4 N910C
It is used but have received from a trusted person. It has stock setting, and everything in place no root or something. Have kitkat stock firmware.
One issue though, it detects the PEN when inserted or removed but the pen doesn't write at all on the screen. Even hovered or touching, or pressing hard. It doesn't write at all. The seller says that unfortunately the pen is swapped with some other note 4 customer. He guarantees it's original pen.
So I tried I went to the shop and checked with other note 4 pens. Nope I can't find a pen that is working.
How it is possible that note 4 doesn't recognize any pen at all but the touch works perfectly ?
thanks,
Because the touch has nothing to do with the PEN, the Note 4 probably had a screen replacement with a faulty Wacom sensor (which is the technology behing the S-PEN).
Thanks
