I'd like to install an anti theft app on my n7. I've got Where's My Droid on my phone, but the thing is, the nexus doesn't have a data signal to access its GPS location at the drop of a dime.... it would only be able to be tracked if it is currently connected to WiFi, right? If it wasn't connected to WiFi then there would be no way to track it that I can think of. Anyways, what are some good anti theft apps that you guys are using?
Another question, has any used Tablet Talk, or so,etching similar? Its an app that sync your phone and tablet together which allows text messages to be sent front your nexus, but it uses your mobile number. Are there any other apps out there like this? Would really love to hear about some experiences with Tablet Talk or similar apps so I know what I should purchase. Thanks in advance.

What is the point... besides a password how would a tracking app help. They will just wipe the tab anyway doesn't even need to be booted. If it's password protected its not going to connect to unknown networks anyway. So either way you look at it you lose it its gone. If you left it open counting on them to connect it good luck...lol if they are smart enough to steal it I'm pretty sure they understand how to do a factory reset.

You're giving the common criminal too much credit. Most of the time these people are looking to sell it for a few dollars.

You can install Cerberus as a system app and it will withstand a factory reset. However, if they decide to flash a new ROM you are screwed. But you are pretty much right about once you lose it is is gone since it has to be connected to WiFi to send back data.

I have Cerberus.. but it most likely will be useless... unless it is taken like at work where I already have Wi-Fi setup on it, it will never be able to phone home and the pattern lock will prevent the new owner from setting up a new access point without having to wipe the unit anyway because it will get locked out.
A phone is a different beast altogether.

Yea, phones are a different thing... not only do you have the opportunity to track but also they are tagged to a network. But a WiFi only tab... even with an autowifi app.. the chances of both apps running at the time stolen and connected to WiFi are really slim. Besides the fact that you couldn't go busting in a residence just because you knew it was in there......
+1 Cerberus good support too

Assuming that your tab has some sort of pin/pattern lock/face unlock protection and your Wi-Fi is always on, then there shouldn't be much problem for the auto-Wi-Fi app to connect and enable access for Cerberus. Mind you that wefi pro DOES start on boot.

I have Avast installed on my Nexus 7. Don't care for the AV, but it does have built in anti theft, where if your N7 is rooted, it can bury itself deep in the system and survive hard-resets. Not sure how well it does, and hope never to find out, but it looks alright. There are probably similar apps out there.
Avast here too. AV does seem to slow some things down some, I guess I'll turn it off. The "locate" feature works well with Google Voice number. Turns on your GPS then sends location to GV (on a PC). Only time I hope to need it is if I leave my Nexus somewhere and I need to remember where (hoping it wasn't stolen). I'm a bit paranoid since I recently had a phone stolen with no security software on it.

Passwords aren't going to get your tablet back. IMO, the biggest risk of losing a tablet is accidently leaving it someplace. I have a business card taped to the protective case of my Nexus and have the app "Android Lost" installed. If my tablet is found by an honest person, then they will call the number on the business card and all is well. If it is found by someone not so honest, the odds of them being sophisticated enough to know how to "wipe the tab" are slim to none. It is more likely that if they are stopped by a passwork, they'll just ditch the tab in the trash or try to "get a reward" by calling me. Without a password, they'll probably at least use it long enough to run down the battery. In that case I at least have a chance of locating it via "Android Lost".
edit: If I were a student, using my tablet "on campus" everyday, I might reconsider the risk. The "campus environment" probably is more conducive to actually having a tablet stolen.

Even if that were true, so what?
You are missing the point.
Okay. I'm at a conference and and look away and someone grabs my Nexus 7. I was using WiFi via my phone since I never use WiFi from unsecure sources. They run away and hours later turn it on. Password is required. They don't know it and after X number attempts the tablet is now locked.
The tablet is not going to connect to any WiFi near them because it is setup to not allow unsecure WiFi connections.
How is cerebrus going to help me find my Tablet ??? It won't, it can't. If they can't use the Tablet (its locked out now right), it doesn't matter if Cerebrus is on it or not.
On a device with 3G, We are talking about something totally different. and I use Android Lost for that. Works great and I know a couple people who found their phones with it, including one that didn't even have it installed when it was "acquired".... they had it installed via the play store and then took control of the device.
The tablet without 3G is not the same beast as it requires working WiFi to do anything. Can't phone home or do anything without it.
The best protection is my data and backing it up OFF the tablet on a regular basis so that if I break my tablet or it gets stolen, I can quickly rebuild a new one with my apps and data in a short time period.
Hi Guys!
I've just picked up a Nexus 7 32gb 3g and it's amazing to say the least. I can't believe for something just over £200 I have a full up to date android experience with premium hardware. Anyway what I was wondering was could I use this device to replace my recently broken Samsung Galaxy S1 (i9000). By which I mean make calls over 3g cellular. I want to pop in a contract sim and just use the minutes and texts of that and I was wondering whether it was possible?
I've done my research and apparently it's as simple as just copying over the default phone apk and it should work although I'm a bit skeptical as I've only seen one thread about. So what do I need to do to make cellular calls on the Nexus 7?
Regards,
Enya
P.S. I don't mind holding a 7" tablet to my face to make calls, I'd probably just use hands free anyway, and I don't mind rooting or flashing roms.
sorry for the off topic
but where did you get your 32gb 3g from - as ive only seen pc world, currys etc selling the wifi only for 200 pound...
would also like to know about the sim card and making calls / texts with the 3g model
thanks

I am also looking for an answer to this question, i can't find any answers, would you be able to try the phone apk and report back. I am not sure if you need rot access to do that.
Also interested, if only because the carrier that my SIM comes from occasionally requires me to make a call to their automated attendant when their online management tool isn't working.
Metaphorically speaking, Oh and yeah I'm probably going to try the phone.apk although I was wondering if anyone has had any experience or anything?
Oh and to put the phone.apk app back on I think you'll either need root access or ABD, but don't take my word for it, I'm no expert lol,
Uh-oh, just read that the N7 3G support won't be in AOSP for now because they weren't able to licence the GSM stack for AOSP
Wait, so you can't just push it into a system app i=in adb by extracting it from another phone that's running AOSP?

No idea. As of yet the only AOSP phone with 4.2 is the GNex (Nexus 4 is not in AOSP yet either due to the same licensing issue).
And unless devs find a clever workaround, N73G isn't going to get the same scope of ROMs as the wi-fi version until they sort out the licensing.
Any results yet?
enya123101, did you try the phone.apk ? I'm really eager to find out if the NExus 7 can make phone calls and I can't find answers anywhere
please let us know
Please don't keep us in suspense. This data is what I need to determine between the Nexus 7 or the 10. I find it odd that this question is not being ask more on the net. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958686 is the only other thread really that's asking this question and not just some random mentioning of it in a sea of Nexus 7 threads out there.
Thanks again for being the guinea pig.
you can not just push phone.apk in fact your device ALREADY has phone.APK and if you try to push it then you will receive the message "you are replacing a system app.
the reason you cant USE or SEE it is because of the way our framework.res is compiled and it is not set as a phone device it is set as tablet among other settings that are different as well.
its not that easy but hopefully once its out in full force then developers will figure out a way perhaps with custom roms that allow it.
any info yet
like the others real interested to see some results

Alright guys. Anyone else here having cell broadcast issues? This thing keeps going off telling me there is a blizzard warning. Like 3 times a day.
We were under a blizzard a week ago tomorrow. I got the warning. Okay...cool... then I got another one the following day. Then like 3 more the day after. I've gotten maybe 12 since then. We are absolutely not under a blizzard warning.
The way I understand it, cell broadcast is declared by govt or whoever is issuing the broadcast. They then contact phone company and tell them where to send the broadcast to. They can push nationally, regionally, locally whatever. The cell company just pages it to certain towers to target the correct people the broadcast is supposed to go to.
I read up a bit and saw that there have been some issues with the system earning wrong people etc. But I didn't see anything where people got like 15 wrong messages. I checked around my neighborhood (trying to make sure asking people pinging the same tower) and pretty much everyone with a relatively new phone got that initial broadcast. No one has received any others. So I'm just like WTF?
from what I can tell the broadcast is a one and done deal. The cell company pings the tower, beams the message, done. There shouldn't be any software issues that can affect it that I can think of. But why then has no one else in my neighborhood (or even town) gotten more than one message?
I'm stock. Not even rooted. Did unlock boot loader. I can't imagine I've messed anything up considering I haven't done anything to the phone.
Any ideas?
Attached screen grab showing 3 broadcasts since last night. Previously deleted the others. Also screen grab showing no bad weather.
And holy mother [email protected]&#er just got another one while typing this.

You can just disable the cell broadcast? I know cell broadcast is a good idea (kinda), but if it doesn't really work then you just have to disable it.
It is under Settings -> Wireless and Network -> More -> Cellbroadcast.
Using CM10.1 on mine and Cell Broadcast is gone kinda but maybe it's good I don't have it!
Was happy to see that AOSP 4.2 finally supported it though. I'ms ure CM will do it soon but definitely something wrong with the implementation if you keep getting the same warning over and over.

For most of them, looking out the window is just as effective, and in the case of major weather events, they're usually big news beforehand.
So yeah, not that useful.
Such as staying connected to my WiFi, or my cellular data connection, or being able to reliably turn Bluetooth on and off. Seriously, these are the things that should just work. On every other phone I've ever owned I've never had a problem with any of these things, let alone all three.
Overall I like the N4 and the positives outweigh the negatives and I plan to keep it for quite a while. But I sure hope these basic things will be corrected in an update soon.

I'm having the exact same issues. When attempting to browse the play store I constantly get the " cannot connect to the play store" and I have to hot retry several times before I can continue. This happens every 10 minutes or so and it's driving me crazy. Also when skiing any type of downloading on my Wi-Fi I get awful speeds. I'm talking an hour to download a podcast but it only taking my iPhone 5 approx 10 minutes to download the same podcast. Something is definitely wrong however I bought this phone from someone else so I can't RMA it so think I'm screwed.

You might want to try a different channel or something with your router if you are seeing disconnections a lot. Also is this happening on multiple wifi connections or just on your home one? With Bluetooth I don't really use it so cannot comment on it.

For here the WiFi signal until it looks good on the phone, but no data transfer occurs. From what I've been reading this is happening to many people. I think google should be manifested.
If hardware problem until I change the router, but at least tell me what works. They are anxious to get the phone's SD reader to avoid confusion and leave this problem in WiFi. Just missing they release the next nexus without WiFi to avoid this kind of problem.

I have T-Mobile and my signal is rock steady. Call support and see if they are working on a tower in your area.
Ok I been on here a long time and I've had SEVERAL phones . The Note 3 is puzzling me and I don't know what else to do but come to the community . I cannot get good service in my house, Verizon provided me with a Network Extender. Although it improved my signal and reception TREMENDOUSLY I now cannot get any text messages. I've done several different trouble shooting techniques and I also had someone come over that has Verizon (same phone not rooted ) to see if their phone Would do the same as mine. So she text me and it never went thru but she was able to receive all her text messages. Can root be causing my issues?
Or can anyone give me any insight on this

Are you thinking it's tied to the ROM? I was thinking it was cause it was rooted

Not getting SMS is a network thing - 100% network thing. It's fundamental to Android so I doubt any rom would be causing it. I only say this because one time - I stopped getting SMS / MMS on my Verizon Phone for several days. Thinking it was just a glitch, I let it go for a few days. Finally I called Verizon and they had me do several hours worth of factory resets, tests, and then finally elevated it a level higher. Each level required me to do all the carp, factory resetting, etc... which I kindly did because they were required to do it. Finally, I got elevated to the highest tech, who really knew his stuff (really nice guy) - found out that someone had terminated SMS/MMS on my line inside Verizon's servers somewhere. He actually had to contact someone else to turn it back on. Bam, got my SMS/MMS back. Took about a week.
May or may not be related.
If anything I'd blame the network extender. Do you get SMS/MMS outside of your house?
I thought it was network extender also...yes i do get them out side my house ..i also get them inside my house if the extender is off. But then when my sister phone got them fine on the same phone and she text me and I couldn't get them I did not understand that part

Wow that sucks... Yeah, when I lived with my parents back in my Droid 1 days, we got a network extender and we had nothing but problems with it. So, we chose to just live with the 1 bar of reception.

Looks like other people having same problems - of course no solution or fix on any of those links. That would frustrate me to no end. I'll keep my eye out and let you know if I find anything.
Uggghhh. Well dang...

Definitely call Verizon about this issue. Maybe check APN settings too. I understand that's primarily for data but it couldn't hurt to check

Maybe cause the network extender uses your broadband for data, not the phones cellular network. That way Verizon puts the signal burden on your ISP, not themselves. I've heard that MMS doesn't work when not on cellular network.
