[Q] Google TTS engine not available? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my Note 3 and am loving it so far. I test drove it and used navigation and noticed that the voice sounded horrible and wasn't the Google voice I was used to hearing on my rooted s3.
So I took a deeper look into setting the text to speech engine and noticed that only Samsung's is listed.
Has anyone been able to find a solution(unrooted preferably) to getting Google tts engine on the Note 3?

i had an update for the samsung tts when i customized the wake up phrases. (not sure how i got it but it popped up and said it had an update). it sounds better imo! but make sure your connected to wifi its over 60gbs!

I believe this was what I downloaded.
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app

I did that. It sounds better than before, but I still prefer Google TTS.

Once we have root we will be able to have google tts. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472959

This works great. Just did it on mine.

I've just discovered that the HD Voice days update that you would have seen, is actually TTS done by SVOX!
I purchased SVOX, and for the UK be l voice at least, it's "exactly!" The same, same voice, same tone, same inflection used within the speech.
Not bad considering its a free addition

Voice to text

Hi All,
I'm new to android and have just purchased the Samsung Galaxy S. Can anyone tell me if it has voice to text like the nexus one or desire ?
yes under settings you can enable it.. but app has to support it.
Hmm i can't seem to find it. I want to be able to use speech to text for things like SMS messages.
I can see an app called "Voice Text" in the market - do I need to buy this first ? It's got terrible reviews.
I cannot find it either.
The Nexus One came with a voice recognition keyboard and voice search. Were these Android 2.1 standard or were they specific to the N1?

I want to know as well. I think the Evo's feature on this is great, to speak out a text reply if driving is great.
My guess is they are 2.1 standard (I read voice input EVERYWHERE is a feature). However Samsung have replaced the standard android keyboard with their own, and Swype does not have that feature (yet, I looked it up and they said they will be adding the microphone button very soon)
You may be able to install the default keyboard for android?
Supposedly this is a feature of Android 2.1, but for some reason Samsung seems to have left it out.
I purchased Better Keyboard, which allows you to enable the mic/input button on the keyboard, but when you press it you get an error message that your phone does not have the voice recognition engine installed.
You can use the Samsung Apps on the SGS to install VLingo for free (it's $9.99 in the Market), but you have to use the crappy vlingo keyboard to get the mic button that works.
Very disappointed to see this feature missing from the SGS. Supposedly the SGS version of Swype is getting a mic input button, so I wonder if the newer JWM2 ROM floating around has that in Swype and includes voice recognition.
Edit: this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712100 has a link to a working version of the voice search. I've installed it and it works.
Some are reporting that installing Google Search by Voice from the Market corrects this issue. I can't validate since that app doesn't show in the Market on either my Nexus One or my Galaxy S.

[Q] Google Navigation Voice

The other day I was riding with a friend and he had downloaded a new voice to his navigation system. That got me wondering if I could change the voice on my phone for google navigation. Is there any way possible to change the navigation voice to anything other than english and spanish? I want to put something besides the generic voice that comes stock with the phone on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I think SVOX TTS will change the voice.

That's close to what I want to do, but I'm looking more like getting something like he had. He had a couple, but one was Cartman. It was hilarious listening to it, especially if you missed your turn.
Other than changing system wide TTS, I'm not sure if there's a way to change the voice. Is your friend's navigation an app for his phone or is a stand alone gps device? My Garmin and my girlfriend's TomTom both have a bunch of funny voices too. I just wasn't able to find any of those options for google nav, but it would be nice since I never break out the Garmin anymore except on long trips.

It was a stand alone gps. That got me wondering if I could do the same on my phone, but so far I can't find anything on how to change it.
A lot of the the stand alone GPS devices have different voices. I dug into this a while back when I first got a moto droid and wasn't able to do much with the voices. My daughter (3 months at the time) started crying every time the google voice GPS would talk
It was kind of funny but got old real quick so I just turned off the sound for GPS.
Fyi - I've not had the best of luck with the svox tts application

O.M.G. What the heck happened to the navigation voice?

One of the things I liked best about my Note 2 was the turn by turn voice. Very nice, soothing female voice. In fact, I never used directions on Waze because the Google voice was much better. It's the same voice used on Google Now.
The Note 3, however, uses a Samsung TTS voice that is simply horrible. In fact, I'd say horrible would be a compliment. Very nasally and computer-like. What happened to the Google female voice? She's still there on Google Now, how do I get her to be there on navigation? I'd hate to think that Waze is the best I can do.
Help me, please!

Google Maps are already installed. It's within Maps that I'm hearing this terrible voice. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling Google Maps. Same result, no change.
i found that if you install the "HD" version of the voice through Samsung Apps it makes it much better. you have to go to text to speech options then try install voice

install ivonna tts it free and much better that all tts-es out there. kendra is the american english version. I have tried some other languages they work nice.
Thanks for the tips, guys. I installed the HD female voice and the Ivonna American English voice. They're OK but neither one of them is anywhere near as good as the Google Now voice. Is there no way to use the Google Now voice?

So far from what I have seen in other threads for other carriers, it will require root to install google TTS voice.

How well does google now work on note 4?

How good does Google now work on the note 4? I am thinking about getting the note 4 & I am real big on Google now. One of the features that I like the most that this phone offers is the ability to do Google now while the screen is off and wake it. Does this work pretty good?
Also, I read were moto voice makes Google now laggy. How is the Google now in terms of responsiveness for note 4?
I find it very responsive. However, my Google Noaw stopped working (would respond to okay google command only from Google search screen...would not respond from off screen or any other screen for that matter.) I checked all my settings and they were fine. I rebooted, still no joy. Cleared cache, still not. The only thing that worked was uninstalling the updates via app manager. Why this worked I do not know but....if someone runs into similar I hope it helps.

It works great, the only problem is if you have a gear watch or anything with bluetooth already connected, then it only works whenever it wants. You can't even set up your own voice if gear watch is on. Once you disconnect the fear watch, it works perfect every time, screen on,off, locked. I also have the s voice active. So with my gear watch connected, i use s voice for text, call, open apps etc from my gear watch. I only use the ok google for searching as ok google does a much better job at searching.
S voice is improved drastically. I'm coming from note 2 so, for me, s voice is like day and night. Even the car mode is amazing. I hope this helps your decision. Note 4 is a beast phone. I have been using it for a week now and love it. I'm stock by the way. No root.
i use the google now launcher and i have no issues (i've disabled S-Voice).
Ok Google search comes up whenever i say the hotword. I don't use it from lock screen (have a lock screen security on), but works fine if you have an unsecured lock screen.
Also have a Moto 360 connected via blutooth and it doesn't affect it at all.
There are some conflict issues between s voice and google now voice search. Once i turned off s voice, the problems went away.
"Always-on"-function gone and replaced by "From any screen". Why?
When you go to the settings of Google Search/Voice/OK Google Detection/
one should see the "Always-on" option, right?
I used to have it, but right now it´s gone and got replaced with "From any screen". I don´t know how that happened.
The problem is, "From any screen" doesn´t work when the display is OFF.
The "Always-on"-function does work also when the display is OFF.
I already re-installed Google Search, but that didn´t help either.
Anyone got an idea how to get the "Always-On"-function back?
Not , but I did find out the delay in voice search is caused the touchwiz launcher. Install the free nova launcher, and the search launched twice as fast, plus has a lot better customization.

Good advice, thanks. By the way: Does your Note 4 show the "Always-on"-function, or do you also have only the option "From any screen"?
I wonder whether it could be that there is a special version of the GoogleSearch-app for the Note 4 or devices like to Moto-X?
So when one downloads the standard GoogleSearch-app from the PlayStore, one will not have the "Always-on"-function.
Is that possible?
I have always and also from lock screen checked. There might be a specific version in the samsung pre-installed app store.
I think Always On works better with Nova Launcher than with Google Now Launcher. I was using GNL for a bit and after a long idle, the phone would not respond to "OK Google" with the screen off. It would take turning on the screen, then off, for it to work. My guess is that the Google app gets killed when not in use for a while. With Nova, you have Aggressive Desktop, which is similar to keeping the app in memory. Couple that with enabling "OK Google" from Nova and it keeps the Google app from being killed. Just a theory. Will test more.

Intonation missing on Google Text To Speech engine

I noticed the Intonation setting on my friend's Google Pixel in Google TTS Engine.
I came across this article on Android police which mentions that Google TTS 3.10 adds the feature "Intonation" which makes the voice more expressive:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/1...ost-its-volume-above-other-apps-apk-download/
I have the latest version of Google TTS (3.10.10) on my Galaxy S5 (LineageOS 14). I also have the Google Assistant on my phone thanks to an APK I downloaded and flashed here. Works great, BTW.
Is there a way to enable the Intonation setting? It makes quite a difference!
I couldn't find anything about this on XDA or online.
