How do I stop OTA updates before possible root is achieved? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to immediately disable any OTA updates directly out-of-the-box? I am hoping to be able to root at some point, but don't want to jeopardize my chances by letting VZ push out some sort of patch that makes it more difficult. I saw on another thread a how-to, but that was after root had already been achieved. Any help would be appreciated, and I'm sure it's something a lot of other people will be interested in as well. Please, if possible, give any instructions in laymans terms lol. I'm no major modder, but root is important to me, as I would like to be able to use the WiFi tether on my unlimited plan.

It doesn't install automatically. You still have to accept the update so just don't touch or do anything.

Okay great, thank you! If I get a notification, I will just ignore it for now.

My girl did that on her s3 a couple times, then one day she unlocked it to find her ota was installing itself anyway. She rejected it for a month before that happened.

Interesting... new baseband. Mine currently says 32.19.00.16U_4.02.02.14. Does this mean we're getting a radio update?
Can you verify that you've been updated to Maps 3.4 and have pinch-to-zoom in Maps, Gallery, and Browser? According to Google, this is part of the update.

OTA updates work without an sdcard installed. They get downloaded directly to the flash on the phone. I don't remember where, but if you search it shouldn't be too hard to find. Cyanogen has mentioned it.
Once someone with a rooted phone without a custom ROM should be able to snag a copy before it's installed. Or maybe even discover the URL of the update in the phone's log...

You said harder as though it took more then 5 minutes to begin with. Unless it has a new SPL to overwrite the current one, then no, it will not be any "harder."

[Q] towelroot - Phone isn't currently supported

Ok so got a uk SM-N9005 stock 4.4.2 kitkat. Installed towel root but when I hit make it rain I get the message "This phone isn't currently supported". Can't find anything about this anywhere. Have they brought out a recent update to block this or something?

what is your kernel date? is it < 3 Jun 14?
In the website of towelroot, its contain an information that 'should support all phones < jun 3 2014'
Oh it's 25th June. Guess that's the problem. So how does it work then coz say I was already rooted using this then I got an update would I stay rooted or not?

Once you are rooted it will change your System status to Custom, which would block OTA updates from occurring supposedly. (NOT KNOX).
If you somehow use a way to make it say Official again, and you update, it will remove KNOX. Unless you use SuperSU's survival mode or MOP's Everroot option, you can keep root after an update.
As far as I know, it's not the date that matters. What matters, is whether the kernel has the exploit (CVE-2014-3153) or not.
Though the date comes in, that the issue was fixed in main code on 3rd June, if I am not mistaken. All kernels, that are based on Android from before that date, will likely have that exploit, unless fixed by the OEM.
Same Problem
I'm having the same problem but the codes didn't work still tells me this phone isn't currently supported I have at&t us 4.4.2 kernver. 3.4.0-2178781 tues jul 22 2014 any Ideas what else I can Do Or use a different root method.

Use the other AT&T rooting methods...KNOX is useless to warranty nowadays.
do you know which one cause iv'e been searching and i don't see any thanks in advanced
the way it works for example on my phone (t-mo in US), you update latest firmware, then load older kernel with odin, root with towelroot and reload newest kernel back again. Since both kernels are original from Samsung, Knox won't trip and my status is official, so I went out of my way to disable updates, so I don't get some stupid OTA and loose root. I'm not sure how this would work with locked boot loader ATT has. Don't expect updated towelroot, I think developer works for Google now? I also think ATT owners should go to ATT note 3 forums and find better answers there, since this more for international models.
i had root on my note 3 before an update two weeks ago via towelroot. i had modules installed via xposed installer and now after the update(OTA which is weird) my root is gone but some of the modules still work(lockscreen torch and snapchat colors), others don't. like S5 UI, etc. now if i want to use towelroot it says device not supported
Root Note 3 having Kernel version date greater than 3rd June

I also had a rooted phone that took an OTA update - I didn't think it was possible.
It killed the root - I checked the original receipt - warrant expired so just rooted with CF-Autoroot No problem.
But there are obviously some OTA updates that can install over a root and will erase root.
Unfortunately I have N900P :/

[Q] SGS4 5.0

I haven't been on here in months so I made a new account..... I don't really know what has been going on but I just now found out there is an update for the SGS4 from AT&T. I am currently running 4.4.2. When I got my phone I tried updating to 4.4.4 but had no luck... I messed up so I had to reinstall stock version 4.4 via Odin. I rooted my phone via Towelroot & everything was just decent i guess, I still had 4.4.2... Now that I hear there is the 5.0.1 update, i decided to try & install via Samsung Kies 3 didn't show any updates, I tried OTA , didn't work. I assumed it was because my phone was rooted so I did a hard reset (pointless since root was still installed after) so I had to reinstall stock firmware and tried to do the update again via SK3 & OTA, but still, nothing.
I don't know what to try anymore. Here is my phone information.

Agree. From NB1 stock it will update to NJ4 4.4.4 KitKat, then set date to next day and run update again and that will be the Lollipop update. Then after that installs if date is not correct set it correct. The reason is it will not let you run update again after the update to NJ4 until 24 hours later, to do the Lollipop update or you can just wait the 24 and run it again, whichever way. But you will not have Root doing it this way, all Stock. Yes if AT&T phone will have to be on their network to get the OTA to Lollipop.
I'm pretty sure you will still need an AT&T SIM for the OTA to work even if above instructions work for you.
Or if you want, you can go to stock NB1, root, install SS, and use the pre-rooted method that's floating around this forum somewhere.

Then I have no clue. And there does not seem to be a 3.1 tablet update in the developer site right now either.

System Update today. Question!

I got my phone today, had to change delivery date because I wasn't home on the 12th. There was a system update that improves call quality or something. So, big question. Did anyone who installed stock Moto firmware without the Amazon bloat still get the update? If so, what was the outcome? Thanks. :good:

I haven't been able to receive the update. Tried searching both when my bootloader was locked running Amazon bloat OS, and unlocked running almost-stock OS.
I imagine it's going to trickle out over time. Previous OTA's have done that. Also, I went ahead and signed up for Motorola's feedback program. I was a soak on tester on two previous phones and hopefully I'll get chosen on this one. Being on the odd roms doesn't matter according to the Motorola engineer I talked to. He said they also push the soaks out to the Consumer Cellular, Straight Talk, etc specific roms just like they do for all Moto roms since they need to be tested like any other rom. A buddy of mine actually got a Consumer Cellular soak rom on his AT&T phone while soak testing.

Thanks for the responses. I haven't done anything to my phone yet....wanted to be certain of some things first lol. Honestly, the amazon ads aren't bothering me like I thought they would. It's a great phone. I'm liking it. But I've had my nexus 5 for a long time, so almost anything is better haha. The quick charge 3.0 is awesome. I am just wondering if the Amazon bloat or ads do hinder the battery life?

Have you been on the Motorola forums? There's a big thread over there the mods are working on about that. Motorola says they're supposed to work and Verizon says the G4 isn't approved yet. I haven't followed it completely but I thought I saw where some people got their phone activated and some still couldn't.
