Has the Nook STG come to the end of it's rooted shelf life? - Nook Touch General

I've just bought a new NSTG and rooted it via NookManager and installed NTGApps. However it seems that the majority of the apps via Market Place and Amazon Market just wont run.
Ideally I want to get wireless book syncing working (I believe it's possible via Dropbox and Calibre and another eReader such as Aldiko or Moon+ and also wanted to try and install ReaditLater/Pocket and RSS reader like NewsRob). However all these apps fail to load or install. Either saying their incompatiable with my device or simply crashing on startup. And after searching high and low have been unable to find any working APKs online.
Syncing books via an external SD card is inconvinient and when I've read books directly from the SD card the Nook reader never seems to store my bookmarks and notes. Which is annoying. Though maybe I'm missing something?
Am I going crazy and missing something as it's only a 6 months since this post was made and most of the reasons for rooting the device are redundant?
Seems like getting brand new Kindle might be the better option?

I had a few issues similar which I never bothered to resolve, a few months ago. NewsRob didn't work for me, although others have reported sucess (at least with GrazeRss, the replacement version).
One obvious potential problem, you need an SD card inserted for some things to work, and possibly some of the mount points might not match what is expected by apps.

Thanks for the RSS advice.
Did you find any way to wirelessly sync or get another ereader like Moon+ on it? I really like the feature of Moon+ that tells you how long before you finish the next chapter as well as the ability to read *.MOBI files. Little things but still a little annoying without them.

Wut? Just download dropsync and sync a folder of which you prefer. Dropsync worked, works and probably will fork for a lil' bit more. It's just like a charm.

Aweome. Dropsync works like a charm.

A lot of apps on market have been updated too much to often work at all or stably. hunt around and try some older version apks.
Older versions work much better Opera Mobile/Mini is classic example of that. Even though some relatively newer versions run they are not always stable.
Here is copy of old apk if you interested btw
Coolreader / FBreader / Perfect Viewer current versions on market should all work well on the NSTG.

Hi, I think I still have APKs for dropbox, aldiko and greader which work fine on my rooted NSTG. I must say I'm about to start using the USB cable to sync with Calibre as I like the nook reader and the library is getting messy (can't archive non-B&N books AFAIK). Can send you a link to old APKs if you PM me.

Would be great if you could upload to mediafire or some cyberlocker for other to grab. If you could let us know version numbers would be great too.

[Q] ereader with split pages

I hope this isn't a duplicate thread. I used the search feature but couldn't find any answer to this particular ereader feature...
I'm looking for an ereader that will split pages when in landscape and also has the page turning animation. Obvoiusly, the google books app has the features... but, as has been mentioned in another thread, you can sideload books into the app.
I've tried aldiko, moon+, and laputa, but none of them do these things.....
Any clues? Just another early adoption issue?

... but if Iam not mistaken you can't side load books in the nook app either. I can't remember if cool reader has these features although I remember it having some cool ones (not all of which I could get to work though ) still maybe its worth checking out.
Its far from perfect but its another option that is available at present. hopefully a honeycomb optimized app will show up soon.
So where do you get books from on the standard reader if they can't be sideloaded?

I believe that readers that use Adobe DRM management will use a folder called "Digital Editions" on the internal or external SD card. Many readers do. You can always sideload books by putting them in this folder.
Btw can someone post the Nook Reader apk. For some reason it isn't available on the market in Europe. Thanks.

For the nook app, the folder is called "my documents" so yes, side loading is not only possible, but very easy.
As far as the APk, just google search nook for android and it will take you to the B&N.

I've searched yesterday on the internet but couldn't find it. The B&N site gives a pointer to the Android market. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nook-for-android/379002287/
tell me if you are able to get cover art in the books you sideload into the nook app. I have the same files on my nook app and my girlfriend's real nook, and her displays the cover art while mine doesnt.

Still want to use rooted nook as a eBook reader

Now that I am rooted, I would still like to use it as a eBook reader, I downloaded the Kindle and the Nook App's to see which is better, what program is used to convert and send books to the device? I used to use Calibre but it wont read my nook anymore, any suggestions?
Calibre should still work just fine. I used it for several months with rooted stock and am now using it with CM7. Not sure why it wouldn't show up on yours, but I assure you it works great after root.
ok ill try it, I think the main problem im having is for some reason the nook show's up as a device on one laptop (doesn't have calibre and my eBook library) and it show's up on the one that doesn't... Usually 2 diff drives show up when i connect it..

LOL-Sorry I had to chime in and say that!
Good for you, I do remember hearing that the nook can be used to read BOOKS!

Did you root stock or flash a ROM? If you've rooted stock, you should be able to use the original reading interface for epub, pdf, etc. The kindle app works great on it too, jsut drop the files in the kindle folder on your sd card. If you've flashed a ROM and you're computer isn't seeing it, make sure to open the notification and turn on usb storage to mount to the computer. If you still can't see your device after that, you'll probably need to reflash the ROM. (It sounds like calibre isn't recognizing it as a nook, which leads to scenario 2, and you'll just have to maually convert files in calibre then drag/drop or copy/paste onto the nook).
Drop books in updated calibre program on computer, start server on calibre, open calibre app on nook, connect to server, download book, import to kindle/aldiko/nook app::#winning

Nook e-reader app
I downloaded the Nook android app from the market, but I can't get it to work with my CM7 uSD card boot?
Nook App update
My credit card expiration date had passed and I couldn't get anything to download to the NC through its boot or to the SD CM7 boot nook app. I updated my credit card info and I can download to both and the nook app works great, just like the one on my Droid X. Next I try to download an e-book from my public library.

[Q] What happens to the Nook functionality when you boot CM7?

I have been reading a ton of threads on the CM7 rooting. My wifes Nook was rooted using AutoNooter. She maintains the Nook applications, but it sounds like with CM7 you do not. Are they not available stock while booted in CM7?
My nook will be here at the end of the week. I see myself using the tablet functions more than the E-reader functions, but I do like to read. What's the best reader to install to use in CM7? I have Calibre so format should be flexible?
First, CM7 is a custom ROM so it is already rooted and if installed to Emmc, you will loose the stock reader. That should not be an issue for you as there are several excellent choices for readers out there. I personally use nook for android, google books, kindle, and moon reader. All of them seem to work well for me. I have had CM7 installed since march and used the stock nook for a total of 2 days.
The CM7 install gives me all the functionality of the tablet I wanted and loosing the stock B&N software was a non-issue. Good luck which ever way you decide to go. There are many people here to help you out.

Thanks for the info! I was gathering that it was a complete change...still new to the Android scene...not a smart phone user and this is my first "tablet".
I am planning to boot CM7 from an SD card (read all the SD card threads and ordered a 16GB sandisk). Part of the reason I asked was because I am thinking about my wife's nook...I am not a big fan of how it works on the AutoNooter...but again I probably missed some key parts when doing that as I never fully understood what I was doing, I just followed the instructions.
access to the Kids books from B&N is one of the things my wife misses with her nook, she has only the one "read to me" book that it came with.
You definitely made a right choice.
Note: on your CM7 uSD, you can install the Nook app, but it's horrible, just to let you know in advance.

You want Aldiko Free version, not the "pro/pay" version (it has some graphic bug).
It is absolutely the best E Reader, way better than the Nook app as well.
The only problem is that you have to add the books manually to the phone, I use Calibre to convert and add but you can just drag and drop them to the Nook drive when it is connected in USB mode if you are comfortable doing that too.

I can't get books I copy over from my Calibre library to show in Aldiko. I copied them to the Nook>myFiles>Books folder on the nook (emmc) drive. I also tried the "ebooks" folder on the SD card where the 1 book in Aldiko is located (Jack London's)
Any ideas?

Here are the instructions.. from the Aldiko website:
I was able to use the SD Card feature in Aldiko to import DRM'd Nook books on my Android Device.
At the Home screen in Aldiko, tap SD Card.
Navigate to the Nook folder on your device
Navigate to the Content folder within the Nook folder
Tap on the book you want to import (not on the check box, just tap the title)
You will be prompted to open or import, tap "open"
you will then be prompted for a username and password. The user name is the name on the credit card associated with your Nook purchase. The password is the credit card number itself, no spaces.
Once you have been able to open the book, go back to the home page and follow steps 1 through 4.
This time, when you are prompted to open or import, choose "import". The book will be imported to your Aldiko Library.
The reason I open before importing is that there is no password prompt when importing. I did find that once I had entered my credit card info for one book, I was able to import all of the rest of my Nook purchases without opening first, the app seemed to just need this information once

I can't imagine they were all purchased from B&N. If you're managing them with Calibre, I also doubt they're all B&N DRMed. Just drop them all in one folder, and import the whole folder using Aldiko like so: from Aldiko home, go to SDcard, navigate to the folder, longpress it, and choose Import.

Lost Wireless when I installed CM7 on SD 201 nightly
I lost my ability to use wireless when I upgraded to 201 nightly. YouTube also bit the dust. I am most interested in regaining the ability to hook up to my router or other wireless access points.
When 201 was installed, I had wireless. Then I installed a few applications and then I noticed YouTube was not working. I deleted Youtube and reinstalled but it was no use.
I shut off the wireless so that I could reconnect thinking a better connection might make Youtube work. NOW wireless would not hook up to my router at all. I deleted my router from the list of wireless sources and tried to find it again. Even with the Nook 1 meter from the router it could not pick up a wireless signal.
Next I saw in the discussions about the most recent nightlies and found out there is a bug. If you hit AIRPLANE MODE in the settings, you can not undo the choice merely by unchecking the box.
A potential work around was discussed, by using the terminal mode and typing:
SU
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
delete from system where name = 'airplane_mode_on';
.exit
I tried this but failed to get it to work. I may have entered it incorrectly but I don't think I did. The poster suggested copy and paste but that is not easy with no wireless.
Can anyone help me and others in my situation. How far back would I have to go in the nightlies to correct this and update to 201 again?
Not having wireless is a bummer.
UPDATE:
After my nook sat for a while I tried to hook up to wireless again. It worked! I don't know if it was the script for certain, but I did not re-install anything. I believe it was oldman_58 that resolved this for me. I can't respond to his post, but thank him nonetheless.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17811412&postcount=5111
The above link goes to his post on this issue.
Thanks Oldman!
Update 2:
Wireless is again missing. The only thing I can think of is to start over with a formatted SD card. If you know a better way please tell me. I am able to get wireless for short periods if there is an application that would help. I installed nightly 202 today, but it did not restore the Wireless.

Rooted Nook Touch: Calibre friendly?

I rooted my N2E, and played around with it a bit, using TN. Then I restored my unrooted backup, because I couldn't seem to find a convenient way to do the one thing I want to do.
I want to wirelessly browse my calibre library, and download books from it to my nook.
I don't care what method is used. Calibre's content server, dropbox, whatever. I just want a convenient way to sideload books from calibre onto my nook without plugging it in.
But I couldn't find a way that would be simpler than just plugging it in and using Calibre's 'send to device' command, so I unrooted and went back to my backup.
Did I miss something?
On my Nook color with CM7 I use the following setup:
- I set up Calibre to mount a folder as a device, pointing to a dropbox synced folder, so that "send to device" sends epubs to dropbox folder.
- I also use calibre2opds to create a dropbox accessible library to browse from any device (it creates also an HTML browsable version).
- on NookColor I use FolderSyncLite to automatically sync the dropbox folder with a folder on sdcard (eg Nook's MyDocuments).
Then I can use sync feature of Mantano Reader to keep its library in sync with dropbox calibre device or simply use Nook which doesn't need an explicit import to use books in its folder.
I plan to replicate this setup on my Nook Touch, which should arrive today
hello,
I'm using Samba server on nook. Then on Windows I mapped nook as a drive and set up calibre to sync with My Files folder. Works like a charm.
PS I'm new around here so I can not post links. Search market for com.funkyfresh.samba
I use a combination of two methods to sync my books with Calibre and reading devices:
Calibre Library in Dropbox -
Syncs between Computers, can download any Calibre book via Dropbox.
I use this for books I don't want to carry around all the time, school books, manuals, etc.
There are multiple apps which will sync specific folders in Dropbox with specific folders on an android device. One of these could work for automatic syncing.
Wired Connection -
I use this for a large updates of my devices library since it's faster than Dropbox.
When I want to immediately sync a new book to read that I've just obtained.
Oooh, goody

I know this is an old thread but just want to say thanks for spelling this out. some day I will try and mirror this set-up and may have questions
Do Aldiko and Moon+'s ability to add an OPDS catalog not work on a rooted NST?
I have a server in my basement hosting my library. I use CalibretoOPDS to generate both OPDS and HTML catalogs. It's a 'dead' list, in the sense that there's no decent searching, but I have access to it basically anywhere. I can expose it publicly as I'm using Apache and can easily password protect that directory.
There's a Calibre PHP app, that I may move to, just so I can search my library before downloading.
I also use FolderSync to move audiobooks, music, and pictures to my portable devices. I guess I could add epubs to the list if the above doesn't work.
On my server, I have a root folder for each mobile device, then subfolders for audiobooks, music, etc. I have parallel folders on my mobile devices. I run FolderSync on each mobile devices with 2 'folder pairs' for each matching pair of folders. One is SMB, runs locally every night, the other is SFTP, and runs only on demand.
To move something to a mobile device, I just copy it to the appropriate folder on my server, and everything happens 'automatically' - unless I'm on the road, at which point i have to trigger the synchronization.
BTW, for SFTP on windows, I'm having best luck with Sysax 'Multi Server'. Not open source, but you can get a personal use license for free. (As a side note, Aldiko, and maybe Moon+, allow me to specify a port, so I could, but don't currently, set this up to use a commonly-not-blocked port, like 443. I'll do this if I get blocked. FTP is often blocked, also BTW)
I do all this now for a smartphone and a tablet. I recently decided I wanted a specific-purpose reader with e-ink. The NST jumped right out as the right choice. I'm figuring I'll root mine as soon as I get it and so these same things with it, but I'm just planning to use it as a reader (well and maybe limited browsing as I sometimes do that with my library before downloading via OPDS).
Hoping this is more helpful than confusing.
Calibre settings
this seems to be the best place for this question.
I changed the settings in Calibre as to the sort title appending with a letter so I can have books of a certain type listed at the back-end of the Nook Library but they do not sort that way so I have to put the letter in the actual title does anyone know of a better way to sort books using the following set-up?
Nook touch rooted cynogenmod7
Nook Library
Using Calibre to load books with the generic android device (could not make the nook plugin work) would not send to the right place on the Nook
Thanks for any resonses

Your plan is a good one. I have done similar. The biggest problem has been that the NST only runs Android 2.1 eclair, and many of my favorite apps seem to require 2.2 froyo or above. I've had to search around for equivalents in some cases.
Dropsync works very well for file synchronization, within the limitations of Dropbox.

Dropbox + Dropsync works very well for this. I have calibre news feeds set up to download several newspapers and web sites on a schedule. I have a cron job on my home linux server set to grab select titles and move them into dropbox folders (e.g. magazines, newspapers). Dropbox on the server takes care of synchronizing them to the Dropbox cloud.
Each morning, I fire up my NST, enable wireless, and launch Dropsync to synchronize those specific folders.
You could, of course, just synchronize the entire calibre folder, but I like sorting things and limiting what comes down to the latest couple of days worth, so the cron job periodically deletes old stuff from the dropbox folders.
The other nice thing about dropsync is that it is two way. Files I delete on one device (I also have a NOOK color) get deleted off the dropbox folders, then off the other device when I next sync.
I'm using the stock reader, so no syncing of reading positions or any of that nice stuff.
Looks like I might be OK.
FolderSync supports "2.1 and up".
Tasker, "1.6 and up".
Aldiko and Aldiko Sync "2.1 and up"
Moon+ reader "1.6 and up"
EsFileExplorer "1.6 and up" (with a separate version for Cupcake
Root Explorer "1.1 and up" (!)
Dolphin HD "2.01 and up"
Looks like all apps I was thinking of using support 2.1. They may be utterly bad on an e-ink screen, though.
BTW, is that why you're using the stock reader?

I didn't keep notes, but I recall that there were some ebooks that didn't format as nicely with other readers, or options that were difficult to spot on the e-ink screen. It's mostly just a personal choice thing, though. The other readers do work well.

Replacement for Dropbox

I understand Dropbox will require Android 4.4 in the near future. I have used Dropbox on my Nook for several years to transfer CoolReader bookmarks to my PC.
Is there an alternative to Dropbox?
If you use ES File Explorer, you can connect it to a remote cloud storage via webdav (e.g. an owncloud instance: a few providers here)
Not as slick as dropbox, but certainly more stable than the DropBox proprietary syncing solution.

Much obliged.
The good news is my old Dropbox app still works on the NST, albeit with only two other devices. Not so convenient.
The bad new is I cannot use Google's My Drive through ES File Explorer, probably because I didn't root with the Gmail option: thought I'd never need it. I have tried a few Dropbox alternatives but finding old versions of these apps that work with Android 2.1 isn't easy.
Have others found a replacement for Dropbox for their aging NST?

I'm not sure what this means. Are you trying to use the same version of Dropbox on newer devices and seeing problems or...?
When I checked the app recently I found it worked OK in the typical way, sharing an epub between my NST and PC, but perhaps the requirements of CoolReader are something more.

No, Dropbox is entirely adequate for file transfer between my Nook, Desktop PC, and 10" tablet. That adds up to the limit of three devices Dropbox now permits. However, I also transfer files between the Nook and the following devices:
another Desktop PC
a Chromebook
a 7" tablet
and two mobile phones.
With the new Dropbox limit, these transfers are no longer possible.
There are Dropbox alternatives, such as Google Drive, for all of my devices except the Nook. Hence I'm hoping for an alternative to Dropbox that will run on the Nook.

Well, wow. That's a lot of electric sheep to ride herd on.
Modding the only Google Drive app that will run on Eclair looks hopeless. When I ran up the line I could not even get versions targeted for KitKat to access my drive on a KitKat device. They kept saying they were too old. So by the time I would find one it would be so different from the Eclair version I could never reconcile the differences.
Cool Reader.....I thought it might have access to Google Drive but when I installed the version that runs on my NST on a KitKat device (since I was still fooling with that) I could not find anything about sync at all (although there was a .crsync file in the "Books" folder). Maybe I just missed it? I confess I find Cool Reader's scattered settings a little disconcerting so it's possible I missed it.
FBReader pulls off the Google Drive interface on the NST by passing the request through their own servers which you give access to a dedicated folder on your Drive. Then the data is passed back to you via their servers. A neat trick as long as you trust them.
Unless Cool Reader does something similar, Google Drive looks like a "NO" option.
