[Q] Launch Google Voice Search with Bluetooth - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I want to launch Google Now in my LG G2 (TMO) when I press the Bluetooth button. But it only brings Voice Dialer. Tried disabling it and select Google Voice Search Activity in Bluetooth Launch app. But no help.
When Voice Dialer is disabled, Bluetooth Launch does not open anything.
Anyone have a work around?
Thanks,
sivag1

I am having the same problem. I even tried deleting the voice dialer app (via root access), but that didn't work either. What headset are you using? I have the Plantronics 520.

I tried multiple bluetooths. Dont think Bluetooth device is the problem. Needs a way to trigger a custom app when Bluetooth button is pressed.

Same exact issue here. I desperately need this to work! Any other way to customize the bluetooth button?

It would be really nice but AFAIK this had been tried and failed on other devices as well.
I searched for a solution for my other phone (Note II) and didn't find one.
I'll be thrilled if someone proves me wrong.

Similar issue with wired headphones

I have a seat of Beats headphones. The advance and rewind buttons actally control the volume slider instead, not what I was hoping. However, a long press on the stop/ pause button will bring up Google Now.

Yeah, but these are wired aren't they.? I think what we all looking for here is BT solution.

I've searched for this solution for hours, nothing, nada, even on here no one can figure it out. There used to be a workaround involving a bluetooth activation app, but that doesn't work anymore, although the app is still on the app market. What's interesting to me is that in Cyanogenmod 10.2 on my G2 when I press my bluetooth it gave me an option to use Googles voice dialer, or Google search. I picked Google search and it works, but for some reason the phone cannot pick up my voice thru bluetooth, so it's kind of useless.
I'm quite surprised and disappointed that no one has been able to figure this out, but maybe it's just more complex and/or individual to each device.

It is because phone launch MIC_VOICE_COMMAND intent action instead of VOICE_COMMAND. I wrote small application that intercept MIC_VOICE_COMMAND and run VOICE_COMMAND. I tried it with motorolla Voice Commands (installed on system partition) and it is works fine.

Removed gnl.apk because it is does not work.

It works fine for me, Just download and install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nuance.android.vsuite.vsuiteapp
Move it to system application via Titanium Backup. Then you may use apk from my first message to run it instead of standard voice dialer.

Hi, can you elaborate on this? I downloaded the voice command program but it won't run, saying "Not a system app. Illegal installation". I know it needs to be moved to the system folder to work, but can you elaborate on this? Is this in /settings/apps ? Also where is the voice command .apk located to move from? Also the last apk you mention is the gnl.apk?
Thanks, this will be awesome, much appreciated.

Voice Commander is build-in application for all Motorola phones and to work it must be installed on system partition, To do it you must have root & Titanium Backup Pro (paid version because only paid version have this feature).
- Run Titanium Backup
- Press Backup/Restore
- Find Voice Commands application and click on it
- Swipe to the left for "Special features:

Donut & Text-to-speech

Hi Guys,
Been a long time since I posted on this forum, back in the days of my T-Mobile MDA Vario! Thankfully moved on to a better operating system in the shape of Google's Android. Any way my question relates to the new Donut (1.6) update. I've had a read off the features for this update from the Google Android website but i'm having trouble using some of them.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-1.6-highlights.html
Text-to-speech
I've activated the settings for this in the Settings menu and downloaded the necessary voice pack from the market but so far can't seem to get it to work. Ideally i want it to be able to read back my text messages as this is very handy for when driving, but i can't find any options to turn this on. Anyone got any ideas?
Voice Dialling
Another feature useful while driving (hands free of course) and the normal way on most phones is of course to press and hold a certain button. I think I must have tried every button for this one but still can't find it.
Any help you guys can give would be great thanks.

Voice Dialing (and Voice Search) is not installed outside of US (and maybe AU).
If it was, you would have a microphone icon beside the google search button.
And for Voice dialing, you could just long press the green dial button (physical button)
oh right didn't realise that was a US only feature, guess I can wait till éclair for them to roll it out here. Any update on text-to-speech?

Try the application TalkBack . (it might be already installed on your phone, or install from market).
You can activate it in Settings-Accessibility. Then android menus/popups/... will be talked to you !
(you should also install Text-To-Speech Extended from market )

HTC Desire - Working voice search.

Ok guys i got the voice search working. So when you click search button the mic comes up and you search.
This is how.
Go to settings, applications and click allow third party applications to install.
Link the phone via htc sync to your pc.
Go to this link and download the file and open the rar, click , install onto phone.
nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-voice-search-to-htc-phones
(insert http before)
Happy searching
p.s. this is not my own work, just passing on the information
This is the original thread that found the above app:
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/60120-do-you-have-quick-search-mic.html
The original location of the app:
http://code.google.com/p/voicesearch/
So you can monitor if there is an update.
I have tested this on my HTC Desire and it works fine, no error, no quirks, no FC, just works.
Why on Earth was this removed? Works (so far) flawlessly on my unbranded / unlocked Desire. Cheers.
Fantastic app, of course I searched for various 'rude' words (not the obvious ones that are no doubt blocked) and the first links in each case went to Urban Dictionary
Tried some sensible searches and EVERY single one worked as expected - very impressed, well done Google!
Now why on earth is this not a standard app.....
Am I missing something lol? its been on mine from the start lol

I wasn't aware it was missing? It appears to have been there from the start for me, using the Orange ROM, haven't bothered debranding it yet.

Mine was there on the Orange branded ROM, but since disappeared after flashing to generic. They must've done this themselves as part of their 'branding' process - something actually worth doing for once! Well done Orange!
oddness: *only* google search
I got a Desire on T-mob today, and I've been playing to add this.
I've got the voice search enabled, and I've added the new keyboard with a mic button on it - all well so far. However, if I do a search, and press the mic I get the "Speak Now" dialogue, and it says "Google Search". So I can do a Google search fine, but I can't for example ring someone in my phone book. I can google them, but that's not quite the same!
Can anyone help?

phil, could you post what you did to enable voice search, just in case I've done something differently? "call joe bloggs" doesn't do it for me, it just does a google search for the term...!
Sorry i took a while to reply, This is what i did to install the voice search.
1) Go to settings > applications > click allow third party applications to install.
2) Go to >
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-voice-search-to-htc-phones/
3) Download for the htc desire.
4) Plug your desire into a usb port on your pc.
5) Click htc sync ( Make sure it up and running on your pc too)
6) Open the file you downloaded in step 3.
7) Follow the instructions. Click next once (i think) then it will promt on your phone, press install.
8) Click the search button on your desire (bottom left hard button, little magnifieing glass)
9) A little microphone should appear, click that to voice search.
All done,
Few hints >
Long press the button to go straight to voice search.
To call someone, you have to say > call "persons name"
Saying something normally will google search that.
PM me if you need more help.
As i said, i wasn't the one who made this file or anything, just happened to be
one of the first to get the device and get this working.

Don't think i'm unique...but I've now got GV + Skype working decently WITH BLUETOOTH.
I initiate the call from the gtab and it plays fine. As with all VOIP systems...there is a bit of a lag...but everyone said I sound clear enough.
I am using the hacked skype.apk...paired my BT (Motorola bt820 - a real piece of ****..but that's another subject) and it works great.
I've tried to use GV + sipdoid but the lag was horrible...and almost everyone said i sounded either too much static or it picked up every fricken sound and multiplied it x10 (this was using the included headphones)
So i'm going to keep trying this setup...other BT headsets I have...and if in 27 days still works great....bye bye voice/data plan (which isnt usable by the tablet atm..grrrr...)

You tried Vlingo over Bluetooth?
i tried it.. all of these apps dont do what i think a voice dialer should do.. run in a background and when u press the button on your bluetooth headset it should let to call someone by saying their name without you opening the tab and chosing the Tap To Talk..
no point in voice dial if u have to access the tab for it to work
anyone know if this is even possible?

There is ONE firmware where this feature worked: XXJI5.
Voice dialing over BT actually worked.
Since that firmware, it it no longer working and i tried every firmware out there.
I even reverted back to XXJI5 and confirmed it started working again.

I'm running JMC and sadly there's no update to the voice dialer app, in fact there isn't even one -on- the tab.
Only real thing I missed from my N1. Would there be a way to extract the voice dialer Apk and push it to system/app for an artificial install?
Edit: After trying a multitude of apps, I believe it might have something to do with the bluetooth connection (in addition) to the lack of a proper voice dialer app. Several after-market apps won't recognize the long-press call action from a BT headset.

There's no trial... at $6 and only 3 stars, I'm a bit reluctant!
Have many people tried it?
I can't believe such an advanced device lacks such a basic feature.
Samsung Vibrant on Froyo has this feature and it helps a lot when driving. Considering that Vibrant and Tab are very similar it should be possible to make it working without any additional software.
I know that Vibrant has separate VoiceDialer.apk
VoiceDialer.apk (rapidshare /files/ 301866434/ VoiceDialer.apk) works perfectly and triggers standard Google Voice Dialer via long press and via Bluetooth. My HD2 running on DFT_LEO_NAND_Android did not support this out of the box so I am glad to have found a solution to en my Car Kit frustration.

And thank you kind sir.
i did just fine using vlingo and choice dialer free
even tried it
for vlingo, u can wake up the tab 1st, then do the call, but somehow it lacks of understanding what i said, and ended up calling another people
i prefer choice dialer, as it understands me quite nicely, but from a screen off tab, long press doesnt work >.<
when its on, it works nicely
havent used it again for a long time, and today i found out that some app is using the mic so i cant use choice dialer
how to find out who's the culprit? anybody knows?
Using Choice Dialer Plus Free (AKA Hands-Free Voice Dialer (free)) from Android Market with my Infuse. Works great and doesn't need a data connection.

Fully working BT voice dialing for the Tab. Huzzah!

Greetings one and all! After much toiling and lurking on XDA (as well as some experimentation on my end) I have finally got my Bluetooth enabled voice dialer working flawlessly! I can now initiate all sorts of voice commands directly from my headset without needing to touch the Tab at all.
I shall now explain how.
Download and ADB Push/RootExplorer/Etc the attached VoiceDialer.apk to /system/app.
This one is different from the other APKs I've found posted on xda. I ripped it straight from my N1. It doesn't mute your headset when you long-press call and talks with a robotic voice instead of a flat beep.
Secondly (and what I believe to be *the* major detail) is an alternate lockscreen is required. The Tab wasn't really built for BT voice dialing (unlike the N1), so the stock lockscreen isn't programmed to wake and unlock when Long-press Call is initiated. In my case I used WidgetLocker because it is pure awesome. Worth every penny.
And finally I do have Google's Car Home Core & Launcher installed. While I question the direct correlation, I do know they do work closely together and frankly it doesn't hurt.
Feel free to install, mix & match as you please. Perhaps you don't need a 3rd party lockscreen with this particular iteration of VoiceDialer.apk. I haven't bothered to find out.
Also don't confuse this version of VoiceDialer with others posted around XDA. It is 72.8 KB where the others I've found are 40kb and 80kb respectively.
Best of luck and enjoy your new found headset freedom!
Nice finding, I'll give it a try. However, your VoiceDialer APK is not signed. I've already created a signed version, so if you don't mind, you will find it attached.

You're welcome. An unsigned apk cannot be installed directly through adb. You will receive an error complaining about a certificate.
BTW: There is a newer version (2.2.1.4) of the Google Car Home App floating around here. Google made available a customizable version for Nexus One and Motorola Droid. However this version runs perfectly nice on my tab.

vlingo works from samsung apps, but you still need to do the lock screen thing, as otherwise you need to unlock every time you want to use a voice command, which is a bit of a pain.. don't understand why samsung wouldn't have implemented this!
Thanks for the tip. Vlingo works. I heard it drains battery though, is that the case for you?
I am trying out widget locker for locking the screen as suggested by the OP. Defeats the purpose of voicedial if I have to take it out to turn it on every time I want to call, I might as well dial it on the tab.
Edit: After a few hours of playing with widget locker, I still can't get bluetooth voice command going when the tab's screen is off...

[Q] LG G2 change default app launched when bluetooth call button is pressed

I have been searching the internet for the past few days to try to find a solution to this issue, but to no avail. When I long press the call button on my Plantronics 520 bluetooth headset, the phone launches the "Voice Dialer" app. This app is TERRIBLE at voice recognition (go figure). I have tried using this workaround, but a) I am not using a Nexus 4, b) the phone I have is completely stock, and c) I have a different headset. I would like to choose what app is launched when I long press the bluetooth call button. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm running android 4.2.2.

+1 on this...the Voice Dialer is terrible...I don't understand how it could be so bad and how LG's interface does not allow for choosing a default app for this feature.
Bump...hoping little issues like this get addressed by one of the talented devs out there somewhere. These nagging little issues have my LG sidelined in favor of my DNA (for now). That being said, I already miss the screen on the G2 and the placement of the soft keys vs. the DNA. Here's hoping to see more development of the LG software with helpful mods like being able to set defaults on voice control, sleep settings for notification LED, etc.

Yep. Instuctions in post #30 are little confusing. If you want Google Now voice search just skip step with Voice Commands all together. No need to make system app to anything. BTW, I'm using Motorola Voice Commands instead of Google Now Voice search so I made it as system app because it won't work otherwise and I skipped other steps because there's no need for Bluetooth launch app if you're using just Motorola Voice Commands. But, ddv2005 app will work on stock LG 4.2.2 because it intercepts LG coded action for mic voice commands and ask just for voice commands. In KitKat 4.4 there's no LG code, just pure AOSP, so I can't see how it could work.

In KitKat 4.4 there's no LG code, just pure AOSP, so I don't see how it could work.

Yayayayayayaya i got it working ok aosp heres the instructions
install voice commands choose google search and then voice search activity. set to always
then you need to go to google now settings and choose to record audio ffrom bt sets and then reboot test and it should work out thank you so much alex for the help (and making my bt useable )
2 thanks for you!!
Yep. That's the reason I'm using Motorola Voice commands. You should try it on KitKat. Maybe it'll work.
ATT LG G2 stock 4.4.2 Google Now Search
On ATT LG G2 (D800) I got the phone button on my LG Tone+ headset (HSB-730) to open the Google Now Voice Search finally in 4.4.2. I have not tested this in 4.2.2 but it may work:
Go into the Apps settings and find LG's voice search
Disable it
Install Google Now (It's probably already installed)
Press the phone button on your BT headset
It should now bring up the voice search app that is a part of Google Now
That worked on my phone!
