Amazing things you can do with Xperia Z1 - Xperia Z1 General

I made this topic so everyone can share things that they use and found useful as well as amazing in the Z1. These things can be feature/apps/mods and so on either specific to the Z1 or even for any android device (that work on the Z1 of course) I will update the list below often when people add more and more things to include, but I would rather exclude games as the list won't finish.

Xoom for Home Control and Monitoring

In the event that others may find it useful or interesting, I’ve been trying to use my Xoom as sort of a “Home Control Unit”. The basic idea is that the Xoom would become a sort of home “companion” device. Whether it’s the living room, bedroom, bathroom, etc, the control of the homes main systems from a single consolidated handheld UI.
The first evolution was simply installing IP Cam on it to view the few network cameras that I have in and around the house…nothing kinky (front door, alley, general perimeter and points of entry stuff). Works like a champ. I have a couple of widgets on my main home screen that do not update very often (user defined) that offer one click access to real-time video streams from any of the cameras or combined/matrix view. Nothing ground-breaking, but fun to geek out over. Want to see who’s at the front door? Pick up the Xoom and see…etc.
The Xoom actually served VERY well as a camera placement tester. When I was positioning the actual cameras, I had the Xoom sitting next to them, showing the current video (allowing me to tweak angles, focus, etc).
The next step will be implementing one of the home control systems (probably a MiCasa device which handles X10, Zigby and ZWave protocols) that I would access from the Xoom. This would allow me to control everything from lights, thermostat, etc to temp and water alarms. Hopefully, it will happen sooner rather than later.
Anyway, it seemed like a pretty low-level of effort thing that others might get a kick out of...
I'm quite interested in this can you detail what cameras and software you use? i've been thinking about doing something like this as well

Right now, all of my cameras are TrendNets, but I made the mistake of getting cams from each of their classes (SecureView and Pro). For some damn reason, the bundled software can only manage cameras in the same family. That just makes managing things like recording and desktop views etc from a PC a pain, but no real difference on the Xoom.
Each camera (as well as those of most other IP camera brands that ive looked at) has the ability to set up motion detection and subsequent recording from their respective web interfaces, so as long as you have an app that can reach into network files shares, etc, you can even pull up historical feeds. The guy that makes the IP Cam android app updates pretty often (I'd say there's been an update every 3rd or 4th time I check for updates) and maintains a seemingly long list of suppored cameras.
If the main goal is to simply view from the xoom and basic recording onto a PC, then it doesn't really matter what brand/model of network camera you get. The only trick is to make sure you know where you want to put them before you buy them .... things like indoor/outdoor, power over ethernet and pan and tilt options are usually dictated by where you want to put them and it sucks when you realize you'd rather have bought different cams.

For the actual controlling of home systems, I've been looking at the following:
http://www.micasaverde.com/
The actual control unit is the Vera. I know that theres a Vera 2 running around somewhere, but I cant find it on their site right now.
http://shop.micasaverde.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=100&products_id=88
Great find! We are building a new house and I've been searching around trying to find a solution like this.

Have you tried the IP Camera App from the market? I use it on my Galaxy S paired with a wireless FOSCAM. Works great and has a 2x2 mode as well as a 3x3 mode.
Only have my camera setup for my son's room and haven't enabled access from anything outside our wireless network, so I haven't been able to see it from work, but I think it's interesting.
I've been looking at zigbee and x10 solutions as well. Not to outfit the whole house, but some exterior lighting and stereo.
Have you all looked at HomeSeer?

Hi,
Is there a way to have the screen off while playing back through hdmi to TV?
Cheers

There isn't (at least not on android). The HDMI output is an exact mirror of your tab's screen (though it's clipped by about 15px on the top and bottom, not counting the button bar). What you can do is set up a VNC server on your tab, then use that for output to your display (via a laptop or something like that)... though I guess that kind of defeats the purpose of using your tab.

Your fix sort of (as you stated is not a fix), but once again thanks.
PS my thanks button does not work, so if someone would be kind enough to hit haags' button for me would be great

I do not know if it's what you need, but maybe can help you the app "RootDim", with that you can lower the bright of the screen to zero, is not off, the touch panel still works, help to save some battery, also you can use a mouse with the TV screen to use the tablet.

Thanks for this man!
If you mean while playing a video, you can accomplish kind of the same thing if the brightness on your player can be turned all the way down.
The two video players I use the most are MXPlayer and VPlayer.
MXPlayer can dim the screen, but not all the way to black. VPlayer on the other hand will dim all the way down so that the screen looks like it's off. Changing the screen brightness in this way does not seem to affect output to the TV.
So you can try VPlayer. Likely others as well may do the same thing.
Good luck to you...
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
BS Player will let you dim the screen completely, and it also has the best playback of any free video player for Tegra 2.
Mobo also lets you dim the screen completely, but it can not smoothly playback many videos for me.

Elegance u8 watch

this is a cheap watch, do NOT expect support from the manufacturer
there is also a cloned version, sold as a real u8, no way to tell the difference until you receive it
DO NOT FLASH YOU WATCH!
it might be a clone and render it USELESS
CONS:
-there will never be apps developed for it
-you have to have phone or media audio sent to the watch, otherwise it can't connect
-crappy rubber band, attracts dust likecrazy
-the watch screen is off when in standby, so you have to press the button to see anything
-call quality through it's sucks, both microphone and speaker
-display is unreadable outdoors
-NO support from manufacturer
-NO central location for firmware updates
-NO decent companion app, only generic notifications, no filter possible, only based per app
PROS:
-cheap
-doesn't look too bad
stay away is my advice
interesting, the UI very close to i'm watch, home screen anyway.
removed
the manufacturer sent me the BTNotifier app, so i've been able to try out some stuff
sadly, all isn't well
the notifier app is very generic, you can make a selection from all your apps, but all that does is show a generic message on the watch, not the content of that message (like "new tweet" but not the tweet itself)
that's the whole reason i have my smartwatch, to see messages at a glance, dismiss whatever is not important and grab my phone when it is
will send feedback to the manufacturer, but am not expecting much...
Hi,
I just bought this model. It seemed beautiful and with many features.
The screen is not in color? In the photos seems to b/w.
The battery can stand how long? The bluethoot not fail?
You are not satisfied with him?
How much was yours? In the link you placed it very very expensive...
Reg,
FB
the link i shared was for 2 watches, not for 1, what did you pay for it?
yes the screen is color, look at the analog clock face, the seconds hand is red
and no i'm not impressed with this watch
haven't tried it for long, so no idea how long the battery lasts or how stable the bluetooth connection is
it does not have (native) support for facebook/twitter/whatsapp/gmail, something my Sony Smartwatch 2 does have
it does support sms and has a general "catch all" option for any app you choose, but for twitter it will just say "you have a new tweet" and not the message content
the screen is hardly readable outside, i have to admit Sony did a pretty good job with their transflective display
it also times out too quick, dims the screen in about 4,5 seconds and goes totally black after another 5,5 seconds
all notifications, not matter the application, are grouped together and you can't swipe to see them, you have to use the touch buttons at the bottom
if you disable both phone and media audio, the watch disconnects completely, at least one needs to be enabled
Hi,
I bought here
How works the function "Answer or Dial calls from your wrist"...has good sound?
...and a remote control camera of your smartphone works?
One thing I don't like in the Sony Smartwatch, if you disconnect (BT) of your samrtphone it off the clock, this is bad ...in the U watch does not happen...it's truth?
...I see, this is not the smartwatch announce in the description of sale

Hi,
No, in Sony Smartwatch 2 Hour Watchface is still displayed and always ON even without phone. Many app can run without phone : stopwatch, timer, alarm, many note like SmartNotes, Evernote, GMail Note, Notification historic : Gmail, K9Mail and all others received before no connection.....
OK...
...so, you're not using the U8...you use the sony Sony Smartwatch 2 :good:
...I will wait for my U8 and I'll see if I solve the problem of messages.

I've got the same watch few days ago too,
The initial version of firmware is M28_KHR.CN1.V008
And then, I ask the 2 different versions of firmware from the vendor to see if any new feature or improvement,
The only difference I've found so far is the backlight timeout value can be changed,
Are you interested to take a look?
thanks @alexcc59 for those files!
will have a look, being able to set the screen timeout it the first of many changes this watch needs
did you also get a newer version of BTNotifier?
i have v1.3.21 right now
edit: there's two versions of the firmware? one chinese and one english? or what is the difference?
and how do i get this thing to go into flash mode?

Yes, I already got that APK too.
As I tried,
The M28_KHR.FN2.V002 firmware support English, French...ETC, total 13 languages, build date: 2014/4/2,
And the M28_KHR_CN1_V011 firmware only support English & Simplify Chinese, build date: 2014/4/9,
But I don't exactly know what's the difference except language support.
I figured out the flashing procedure by myself,
If you want to try, you can follow the steps below~
1. Install driver.
2. Switch on and connect the watch with standard micro-USB cable.
3. Run the "Flash_tool.exe" as administrator.
4. Loacate the 2 files then press the "Download" button as the attached picture.
5. Swith off the watch then it will start to flash automatically.
6. Do not interrupt the process until it finished.
so which version of the btnotifier apk do you have?
managed to update the firmware, thanks!
i'm fine with english, so i picked the CN V11 version
noticed these changes:
-2 extra clock faces, 1 digital and 1 analog
-as you already mentioned, the screen timeout setting
-interaction with phone seems quicker, like loading the phone book and accessing the camera
sadly the screen timeout setting only adds more time to the period where it's in power save mode, the time it's in full brightness is still only 4.5-5 seconds, that should be selectable as well
a real deal breaker is that i can't dial out with my phone and have audio on my phone, i should be able to choose by dialing/answering with either watch or phone
it's like hands free always on, unacceptable
it also still disconnects if i switch off both phone audio and media audio
so will wait for another firmware to try again

Which phone do you use?
In my case, I use HTC One M7,
I can choose which device to call/answer in dialer,
Just press the same button as speakerphone then choose while calling,
And I also unchecked the audio streaming option in bluetooth setting on my phone,
Then it will not playback via the poor speak of the watch
see sig, HTC Butterfly s
so you can choose audio on the watch, but i want audio to be on the phone if i use the phone's dialer
they really need to add native facebook/twitter/gmail/whatsapp support to the BTNotifier, useless otherwise, i want to see content on the watch
first smartwatch
Hey guy's I was thinking about buying this watch as well. I have never had one before.
I would love to easily change the song, which my phone is playing through my earbuds. Is this possible with this watch? or can I only change songs and play them from the speaker? Also I don't really get if you guys already solved the fact that you could not pick up your normal phone while the watch is connected?
but most important of all I wan't to be able to have both my phone and my smartwatch on vibrate/silent. I am a student and can't have my phone making any sounds during class.
Is there someone who can answer these questions for me? I have found a good deal for this watch on internet and want to order quick
thanks in advance!!
peace:good:
well, the Smartwatch 2 does all that, and has a way better screen, AND displays content of messages, which this one doesn't, for most things anyway
the SW2 is a lot cheaper now, so i would advise buying that one

thanks for the advise! The sony watch is to expensive for me tough.
Is the smartQ Z1 a good alternative? As far as I can see it looks similar as the SW2 and is cheaper. less than €70,- including shippingcosts to holland. it is 12.2mm thick which is quite ok as well.
yeah the Z1 is a good alternative, runs android so has all kind of options, they even managed to run Android Wear on it
check the Z1 topics in this subforum
i was going to buy The Z1 as well, but as i have already preordered the HOT Watch as well, i thought it was a bit overkill
this U-watch is a waste of money, that's for sure

[Q] What are the most AWESOME and AMAZING apps in your opinion?

What are your favourite apps for android wear, not talking the usual ones everyone knows about... Share the unique and exciting ones you have discovered yourself! Love to hear about some more apps to show off my watch and how awesome it can be!
I think the things you can do with autowear are the most amazing. When I get home I command my watch to turn on my computer and it does that. Or I can control my phone with a dpad that I made with autowear as well. If you use xbmx/kodi somewhere you should also have a look at yatsi, it's a remote. With that you can control your xbmc/kodi device both from your phone and your watch! A flashlight app is also useful, although it doesn't provide much light, it emits enough for you to navigate through the house in the dark.

Let's talk Emulators & Controllers

Figured we could have a dedicated thread for us emulator fans out there and share ideas and whatnot.
I thought I'd start off by sharing my presets for PPSSPP, ePSXe and RetroArch for now and move up to other things in the near future.
Controllers:
DualShock 3:
+ Works flawlessly as of this date (30-03-2016) on LP via Sixaxis Controller.
+ Awesome battery life. Around 24-26 hours for me though ymmv.
+ Doesn't turn off that fast compared to the Shield Controller.
+ Can be hooked up relatively easy to most PCs or Android devices.
- No support yet for MM. (working as intended as of 03-06-2016)

DualShock 4:

Shield Controller:
+ Native Android buttons.
+ Headphone out and volume toggle.
+/- Works out of the box on Android/Shield TV when plugged in via USB. (native android buttons however does not work on Android TV... using a Sony Bravia KD-49X8005C here).
+/- Pretty stiff controls and buttons overall. This is a mixed bag since it shows good quality over time, but the same makes things such as grinding in a controller impossible if you know what I mean. Hard layered plastic is at blame here I guess.
- Lack of start and select makes things messy as you'd rather want those then having to rebind the native android buttons.
- Quite a large footprint compared to DS3/4 or any other BT controller for that matter.
- Short idle time before turning off. This will make several emulators like RetroArch unresponsive with the controller and means they have to be restarted. (update: Home>Recent>RetroArch works as well as it'll make the controller become "reinitialized".)
- Power button easily becomes pressed when carrying in say a bag. However since the idle time is so short compared to other controllers it shouldn't affect the battery time that much. Still something to consider though.
- Flat out denied on Windows devices not running GeForce Experience.
- Wifi Direct only works Nvidia Shield (Tablet/K1/X1/TV) devices (encrypted protocol.... whaaaaat da hell Nvidia?!)
? Battery life pending.

Click to collapse
8Bitdo FC30/NES30 Pro:
+ Wow! Very quality, much buttons, many options.
+ Programmable for pretty much "anything". And w/ firmware updates you're pretty much future proof for the time being.
? Battery life pending (I've read somewhere around 20 hours.)
+/- Footprint & Weight. About 1/3 of the weight of a PSP Go while also being slightly smaller (I'd say around 5% smaller when a PSP Go is closed). Ymmv regarding your preferences. That is, the larger hands you have the worse it becomes I guess, and the same goes if you prefer heavier controllers).
The d-pad and start/select feels like a NES, analogue sticks like a vita. Shoulders buttons (L1/2, R1/2) goes clickety-clack (i.e rather clicky for my taste but something you'll probably get used too). YXAB have a soft plastic texture which I prefer over the hard one used in the shield controller. Overall this is probably my 2nd best controller after the Dualshock 3 (2nd gen). Another thing to mention is that there is a plastic skin covering the metallic plate which is barely visible and easily removable with say a knife/box-cutter blade or flat-head screwdriver. I'd suggest to keep it on as long as possible unless you find it bothersome.

Emulators w/ "recommended" settings
PPSSPP:
I recommend using the native PPSSPP app over the core found in RetroArch. Why you ask? Because the core lacks many functions that the native app supports and the GUI overall is a lot more user-friendly.
Go to Settings -> Graphics and set Rendering resolution to 1:1 -> Display resolution (HW scaler) to Auto -> Upscale level to Auto -> Upscale type (filter) to xBRZ -> and Anisotropic filtering to 16x.
Our device has a pretty powerful mobile Kepler gpu and can handle it, so don't fret.
Turn off On-screen touch controls in Settings -> Controls as we already have a controller.
The GUI overall is easy to manage even with touch support, so I would recommend using your hands (fingers) for a quicker setup as going though the menu is somewhat slower on a controller.
The GUI is the same as on PC so if you've used it before then you'll be welcomed by the same layout and similar settings.
Don't forget to configure your controller in Settings -> Controls > Control mapping and you're set!
Click to collapse
ePSXe:
Pending...
RetroArch:
At first boot you'll be treated by a pretty lame GUI which is made to function across most Android devices. However, for a tablet or (phone) w/ controller, the xmb GUI is a much better alternative. I would recommend anyone who finds RetroArch complex to:
#1: Go into Settings -> Driver -> set Menu Driver to xmb (or glui if you desire but I will not cover that one here) -> Go back to Home and Quit RetroArch.
Restart RetroArch and you'll be treated with the xmb GUI instead.
Assuming you are using either DS3 or Shield Controller, it should have been picked up assuming you configured it beforehand with your tablet.
A(X) is back and B (O) is confirm in the menu. (Shield vs PS3/4 controller)
For anyone who've ever used a PS3 or PSP should be familiar with the xmb layout.
#2: Go to Settings -> Input -> And set your desired user count -> Then go to either Input Hotkey Binds (stuff like fast forward toggle and menu keybindings) and Input User 1 Binds.
View attachment 3701827
I recommend using ePSXe since it's far better than the ones found in RetroArch. Doing so will free up L2/R2 for use as shown above.
(new) I've tried out the PCSX Rearmed (PS1) emulator and noticed a little better support for some games, though testing is still in progress. So if you plan on using this one as well then I would recommend the new layout that comes with this post update.
#3: After you've set your desired inputs or if you followed mine + default D-pad, ABXY and analogue sticks, you should be ready to try out some emulators.
These inputs will work as default for all emulators listed below. For example: GBA only has A/B and no X/Y so these will be disabled. I use L3 and R3 as Start/Select while L2 works as a menu toggle and R2 as fast forward mode (as seen in the picture above).
#4: Head over to "Home" -> Online Updater and update everything except Core Updater just to be on the safe side. I skipped cheats because I never use any.
#5: In Core Updater, pick your desired emulators as RetroArch doesn't come with any out of the box. This why it has a lot of negative feedback overall I bet. These are constantly updated hence why keeping a set is stupid and adds space and junk overall since not everyone might use (again something that people who lack common sense ignore) everything that is available.
I picked the ones below and find them the most stable out of the ones available for each system. The names speak for themselves
Bonus: Pick Home -> Load Content -> Select File and Detect Core for a quick boot of your favorite game (Assuming you downloaded any cores). And preset your "ROM" folder in: Settings - > Directory -> File Browser Dir.

Another plus/minus to consider is latency:
Shield Controller uses WiFi-Direct which supposedly has 1/2 the latency of Bluetooth controllers.
I have a controller that should be added to the list: the SteelSeries Stratus XL

I'm hoping to get one or two of the 8Bitdo Bluetooth controllers this weekend. If I do, I'll post my experience with them.
Also Speedlink, TORID Gamepad (SL-6576_GN) works well
Some updates... Sixaxis now work on MM. As for more thorough reviews, I got a 8Bitdo FC30 Pro arriving sometime this week or the next. I'll update the main post with some more details once it has arrived.
I will probably buy the NES30 Pro as well since this controller looks rather promising minus the battery life. Still, it works on custom ROMs, and that's the main reason I (and probably you) would want it for since the Shield controller is rather bulky and not exactly the best for my rather small hands, not to mention it still doesn't work on anything else but stock ROM.
So what to expect this weekend or the next:

Can you add Ipega-9023 for controllers ? I don't know buy or no for shield tablet ? And can you write pros and cons for this controller ? Thanks

Wait, so does the NES30 Pro actually have Select and Start button? You know that work as such. I'm looking for a controller that will have those without some weird mapping. And what are those buttons at the bottom? It's kinda small for me, but I can't seem to find a controller all the buttons.
ive got the moga power pro and its a great controller but ive just bought the gamesir g4s and that is awesome
The gamesir g4s. For virtually the same amount you can get the Shield original gamepad. Then better the g3s.

yep you have to move to sticks pretty far before you start looking/moving, there are loads of videos on youtube on it
Asus game pad is great!! I use it whenever I want to play emulators or Borderlands. The only problem is there is no home button. You can fix that though by going into the system>usr>keylayout folder and edit Vendor_0b05_Product_4500.kl to change the MODE button (power button) to HOME and the HOME button to BUTTON_START. Do that and restart your tablet and the Asus controller will work like a normal controller. The Circle Home button will now be start and the Power Button will be home. This won't effect anything with the controller like how it turns on and off. You still have to hold the power button for that.
