Nexus 4 questions - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I just got a Nexus 4 with a cracked screen for $50, I just fixed it also.
I love the phone, I cut my AT&T sim to fit it.
I've just got a few general questions though:
If I disable two CPU cores, will it still be a snappy phone? Kinda like the S3? I mean the S3 has two cores right, not 4. Would it improve the battery life a lot more?
In the battery mod thread I've seen, I asked if anyone has the 3D model for the backside of the phone(to add another battery). I was wondering if anyone has some info on this? I would gladly risk this phone for an extended battery
What app could I use to disable two cores? Is there a kernel for 4.3(jss) that does this?
Thanks,
goatocean

As far as I know, it's only using all the cores when neccessary, so if you're worried about battery life just reduce the number of apps you use. I'm using the Purity rom now and easily get a day out of the battery.

As counter-intuitive as it sounds running more cores in a multicore CPU is more power efficient than running a few cores in most modern multitasking systems. You're spreading the process load over multiple processors that can be run at a lower clock speed than a smaller number of cores running harder.

Well drooling over the Ok Google feature of the moto(always listening).
Is it possible to make a kernel that would have 3cores running max, and 1 core running 196mhz?
Then make an app that's using that one downlocked core to always listen. I wonder what our battery life would be though

Am I The Only One ....

...Who seems to be getting worse battery life since I've rooted and installed CM10 and Franco Kernel than stock.
Before with stock I was only losing about 1% every two hours on standby (sometimes even better I've no idea how)
Now I'm losing about 3% an hour on standby and also about 30% an hour screen time with just basic browsing (Screen brightness set to auto).
Also Media server is hammering my battery. Like I lost 3% battery in 15 mins without the screen on just playing music (not streaming) is that normal, I've come from an iphone 4s which didn't lose that in an hour :S
have i flashed it badly is there something else maybe i should try or are these stats about right ????
thanks guys
That's just the way it is just custom roms. When flashing, put your head between your legs and pray for the best. You can spend hours trying to figure out what's gone wrong, but you might never get an answer.
You can try underclocking your N4. Currently my dual-core Snapdragon S3 T-Mo Galaxy S2 is underclocked to 810MHz from 1.5GHz and performance is still great. I'm guessing you can UC your N4 to at least 1.2-1GHz and performance will still be great because of the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU. Also, what governor and i/o are you using?

Hi Gents
Thanks for the reply, yeah it does seem a bit of a hit and miss kinda situation, I'm not masively bothered, im hoping eventually someone will stumple across a fix for the way the screen murders the battery life but im not holding my breath. Still love the phone, really getting used to it now, have tried (and failed) many times to switch to android, must be honest, this is the closest I've come so far to waving bye bye to ios, android is really really fantastic as an os, it's also super pretty to look at these days, stock apps like contacts, calender and the phone app itself are beautiful.
Let the phone and battery have several cycles, it will improve, eventually
thanks mate !!

Under clocking your phone isn't a viable situation. It's a phone, what's the point in it if you're not going to use it to your fullest when my phone lasts through the whole day going from 384-1500?
Some battery tips for op:
- download better battery stats (Google it for a xda version) use this to debug wakelock and ensure your phone is deep sleeping under cpu states. You can also use cpu spy to check cpu stats. Better battery stats is a must need.
- disable Google latitude in maps. Disable the automatic reporting and any other checked marks
- disable Google now cards that you have no use for
- disable gps (some apps use gps and drains battery when it keeps using gps when it isn't necessary)
- ensure your governor is interactive and on latest version of Franco (r20 is very good)

Just stick with the stock kernel that comes with cm10.

Highly advise doing that. Other kernels are way more optimized whereas CM is focused on the ROM itself and not optimizing the stock kernel.
I believe CM10 uses stock Google kernel anyways (could be wrong).
Use Franco Kernel or anybody elses kernel that you choose to.
Mine definitely improved after rooting and flashing custom ROM. Battery life when I was still stock was horrible.

A ROM has very minimal battery life improvements, it isn't as significant as a kernel. Hence the definition of "better"

[Q] How can I get my Nexus 4 longer battery life?

Hi Guys I am noobs here, still I hope you could help.
I have had my N4 for about 3 months now and I have had the same problem since day 1... If you play games that battery life is less than 2 hours. How is this possible?
Is it due to me having process like Skype in the background?
I see that my screen is taking about 70% of the battery life which to me is insane?!
Site note is I got the 8GB version and finally found out that the andriod system is taking up about half my memory.
Waiting to hear from you guys.
Cheers Patrik
Skype is a known battery hog unfortunately but not your main cause.
You need a custom kernel that will let you do things like...
down clock cpu and gpu
undervolt cpu
set max cores, so you can just run for example 2 cores
..it's surprising how much you can turn things down and still have plenty of power for most games
oh yeah keep screen brightness down and try not to run 3g
The higher percentage the screen uses of your battery the better . 70% is normal.

[Q] battery life comparison exynos vs snapdragon?

Are there any comparisons of the two cpus available on the s4 when it comes to battery life? Thats the only reason for me to try to get an exynos version if its shows to be better in that respect.
Yeah, that's a good question I want to know the answer too, there are many people having testing devices but they are too hungry about testing the damn processor and gpu instead testing properly the battery life. -_-

Lord knows battery Life is very important to me.
the guy that's testing whatever people tell him to test said that when his battery got down to 30% it lasted like 3 hours with max brightness and benchmarks running

With wich cpu? Also no comparison to the other version mentioned here.
I'm not convinced, even with S3 you can spend all the battery juice in 3 hours if you want. To do a proper test you need to leave the device doing the same job like an Snapdragon S4 during the same time.

Octa has a longer battery life than SD600.
That's why samsung used 8 cores technology.
And by the way the 5inch HD screen saves power too for both version

Thaty what one hears, yes.
However I would like some actual test reports - for instance how long does the phone last for web browsing, for video playback and on standby?
I would like to see actual numbers.
As for the screen:
It is said to use 25% less power compared to previous amoled display generations. However that 25% value is something we have to trust samsung on I think, at least I have not seen any actual tests on power consuption of the display alone and it's probably not easy to test.
The way they have managed the display to consume less power is to use use phosphorescent instead of fluorescent green diodes, which use way less power. Until now they could not produce the green ones with an acceptable lifetime. The red ones have already been phosphorescent, and the blue one are still fluorescent since they are hardest to produce.

This. This so many times over.
So many people are parroting the "Exynos will have better battery life" thing but this really remains to be seen.
If the better battery life is in exchange for crippled A7 performance at inconvenient moments then it's useless. If better battery life isn't available for when you're using intensive apps then it's also useless.

Thinking of getting this tablet-could you post battery stats?

Hi guys.
I'm making a decision between this and the Samsung galaxy tab s 10.5 .
It seems that the battery life on the sony is actually much better than the samsung despite the samsung having a greater capacity. Could somebody please post up some stats from the real world usage of the sony? I'm thinking total screen on time, total battery life, time between charges.
Thanks!
Mark

I will not have less than 5% battery till 2 days or so. But I can tell you for now that watching movies, a full charge last 11 hours.

Look in the tweak for more battery time thread a few down from this one. I posted mine in detail.
Considering the capacity of the battery, the battery life is outstanding. For example when the tablet is idle it uses virtually no battery, games and movies will see it drop but not at a fast rate, it would defo see you through a day of hard labour. This is why sony stuck with the quad core, and the very beautiful screen. Having looked at the samsung galaxy s with their superior resolution and octa core, Im glad I went with sony, as looking at the threads over on xda people are not happy with battery life, and they are complaining about lag in games, I guess the octa core era has not been totally settled
Hell. 4 cores is more than you need really! Especially in Android. It's not even really used fully in a much more complex os like windows!
BS. 4 cores is saying nothing about the capability of a device.
There are plenty of laggy, slow phones and tablets with 4 cores out there.
I think that the number of cores is less important than the actual day-to-day handling of a device.
I am trying to make a decision between the two best devices here, and the Samsung has double the number of cores. This is irrelvent if software and hardware implementation means a slower actual experience than a device with half the processor cores.
Or indeed a longer-lasting device with a ~30% smaller battery capacity.
I've seen the battery thread mentioned in the reply above- thanks for that.
Can anyone else post their screen-on time or general impressions of battery duration?
Thanks

My point wasn't that because a device has 4 cores it must be good. I have two Rockchip 4 core devices that are not fast! My point was that octa core is complete overkill as even with 4 cores they are barely ever all used.
On an additional note: I know that the point of the Samsung octa cores is that they can run on the lower freq cores for low Intensity processes for improved battery life, but our 2.3ghz cores can also run at a lower speed when more is not needed and although this may be slightly less efficient than the Samsung 1.3ghz cores, I would still choose the Sony any day on cpu alone!

Downsides of oneplus two?????

I am about to buy on2 and i read a lot about that fingerprint sensor being slow compared to other nexus devices . Is is true ?
And what are the other downsides of this phone?
How would you rate it?
Design(in hand feel)
Display
Camera
Reception / call
Performance
Software
Battery life
And i am currently using Oneplus one which i think it's awesome. I wanna know if it is worth the upgrade?
Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk
Design(in hand feel) Feels very premium and well build
Display It's okay, nothing spectacular. Could be me since i have OLED everywhere else.
Camera Pretty good. Altough i would have favored a 16mp sensor like the LG
Reception / call Best i ever had. Reception is really good and sound quality is amazing.
Performance Could use some tweaks on the software related side of things.. Should be all fixed with Marshmallow update
Software See my point at performance.
Battery life Stock. 3h SOT. Boeffla kernel: 5-6h SOT.
Another minor complaint is the vibrator. It's slow and noisy and doesnt vibrate well(just like the OPO). I do like the phone though.

Works very good, the "weak" point could be the lack of NFC. But for me its not a problem. I had a nexus 5 for two years and I never use it.

The two weakest points of the phone really are battery life (at least when running stock OOS) and the stupid Snapdragon 810, which really is a useless piece of crap that unnecessarily limits the phone's performance to a point where it gets ridiculous ...

Today i read the oneplus 2 review on anandtech, after reading that i am really disappointed that how oneplus limits the power of Snapdragon 810. They made this phone a quadcore device.

It's not OP's fault. It's Snapdragon's. You effectively can't use it as an 8 core CPU because it will overheat quickly. Unless you throttle its frequency significantly.
So I guess we have to see the SD810 more as a medium fast 4 to 6 core processor that can, when needed, be ramped up to a fast 8 core CPU for a short amount of time (and by short I mean no longer than approx. 15 minutes, after which it will get too hot to keep all its cores at max. speed.)
Also, it's perfectly legitimate to shut down cores when they're not needed, as this will save battery. I usually have my phone running on only four cores for most apps, and even that is generous.

OTG Doesn't work
have tried all kind of OTG cables and none of them work with OPT. HOWEVER all the OTG cables work with my OPO... such a shame omg....

Ah, yes Flash the Boeffla kernel and you can make full-time use of all four A57 cores if you so wish.
