[Q] Note 3 Uneven Screen Color - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know there are a few different threads about various screen concerns, but this one is specific to color distribution. Sorry if this belongs elsewhere.
I attached a picture of the Note 3 screen without any screen protector while on the dark gray color from the LCD Pixel Testing app. Apologies that the uploaded picture isn't rotated properly. The bottom-right has a purplish/pink tint to it and the top-left has a greenish tint. It's not the camera angle/picture because I took another picture of it from the same angle, but upside down and the coloring moved accordingly.
I also took a picture of the Note 2 under the same conditions to make sure that this isn't normal for other screens, and the Note 2's screen was much more consistent. I've experienced uneven color distribution on the Samsung UN46B8000 TV, but not on a mobile device.
Does anyone else have this type of uneven screen color on the Note 3?
Thank you!

Im not sure why is this happening. Im now on my third replacement and every one has this hue or tint in different parts of the screen. Im not sure if its fixable but I gave up on samsung. I just hope it goes away after some time.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to check out display models and see how the uniformity is. If they are worse than mine, I'll keep mine. Still, I think that Samsung should really work on this. I've compared it to the Note 2 and S3. All have better uniformity than the Note 3, which saddens me as I was really looking forward to this device.

EXACTLY.
The exact same problem with mine, which I described here in my thread.
I've seen worst when I tried to get my second replacement, so I decided to keep mine.
SAMMY whats wrong with your QC????

I spoke to one of the tech guys at my work and he said it could be a power issue. The power source could be coming from the upper-left corner and it gets weaker as it goes across the screen, which could explain the gradient-like change in the display. If the pink is at the bottom-right for all our displays, it could be the explanation.
We looked online for a proper teardown, but we couldn't find one that showed where the screen power originates from. I don't know about this because I'm not sure if full/more power would result in a greenish-blue hue. The only evidence I can think of that supports this is that the Note 2 and S3 were overly greenish-blue in tint over the entire screen.
Does everyone affected have greenish-blue on the top-left that fades into pink on the bottom-right?

just tested mine with the app i got no tint or diffrent hue .. I've tested it on AUTO, Manual low, high brightness settings..

I have these problems since I own AMOLED devices, and that is now for quite some time (see sig.)! Me too had to exchange each device a few times until I got some with a almost perfect screen! On both N9005 I own so far the lower screen side is darker, although there are other significant differences between the two screens: the one of the second device is much more uniform! plus no1 has sharp pitch up in gamma on the leftmost 5mm over the whole side (maybe this screen has been cut out from the edge of the mother-substrate: the more from the center the better, due to principles of metal mask lithography)
I've done a few posts in regard to this in the past, if interested use the search function!

Another problem I have: When CUP is on medium to heavy load, screen brightness and contrast start to go up and down slightly each few seconds on all brightness levels, even on manual and lowest brightness! this happens on both devices, although here the first one is a little more stable! for me this happens always when in gallery for example, due to CPU load because of media scanning... Seems to be some load or thermal brightness throttling mechanism implemented (guess: in some part of the kernel)...

mine doesn't have a hue but on really dark colors (like the dark tapatalk theme) the screen color is uneven on the background.

I'm happy for you. For me, I gave up and bought LG g2 and I'm so glad I did. I just love this ips screen.

I'm wondering if it's there is edge LED lighting and the screen is just uneven.

My first one was like yours which seems very bad. Took it back got a new one, this one has the issue too, but its not that visible. I wanted to take it back again, but then i saw a guy who took 3 Note 3s back and the last one was the worst. So change it until you find one acceptable and next time wait a bit until Samsung gets better QC, or hope for another player on the phablet market.

do you know what you are talking about??

amoled is common in that type of tint.. I used all galaxy. Since first galaxy I used.. And now still smiled tech have this tint..

It's probably not as bad as I make it sound. You can only see it if there isn't any light in the room basically. I took a screen shot of the battery status menu and cropped it to the all "black" part and put a black dot on it. In a totally dark room (doesn't mater what the screen brightness is) see if you can find the dot. It's pretty small you have to zoom in a lot. But using this image I can see the uneven lighting on the screen. If there us ant kind of color displayed though it's totally invisible.
I'm kind of worried about getting one that's worse too. that's what's got me not wanting to deal with it. A lot of them down here have been getting returned to best buy and Verizon because of a signal issue or battery drainage problems.

Nope. Obviously. ?

So I returned the first one and got another. This one is better but there's a big dark band that goes across the middle. It's not as pronounced as the last one though. -__-

Try this in a dark room. Using Display Tester app test card Grey #808080 and put the brightness in the screen tester to as low as possible as well as your phones brightness to low as feasibly possible. The check out the lower half near the home button. You will see it being slightly different and darker. Both mine and the wife's do it. Her's possibly a little bit more pronounced than mine. Normal, as I never notice it during day to day or night time viewing. Point being I have to go out of my way to find this so called issue.

people will complain about hardware issue after some time..when they will compare note 3 together..
coz i have too much experienced in note 3 replacement.
i had three note 3s n900 and n9005.And checked 6 note 3s...so trust me..some device perform gud some laggy..

can confirm this! and it was the same on note1, note2, ... on basically all amoled devices i owned from samsung so far!
the "problem" is the manufacturing process of the amoled screens:
they were cut out of a wafer. in the process of exposing the wafer with a light source through a FMM (fine metal mask) the exposure is not evenly distributed over the whole wafer. the more from the middle your screen has been cut out, the better it is! the gradients (down side darker, right side darker, ...) are due to the gradient light exposure of the wafer before cutting!
so it's all luck of the draw: atm i have one (!) decent screen out of 5 devices! the bad thing is: on this device the thermal throttling is comparable worse then on two of the other devices i have, but on these the display is very uneven!
so it seems to be a hard task to get a device where a) the screen is perfect and b) there are none of the other known problems (wobbly button, thermal throttling, noisy camera, ...) present!
thank you samsung!

Lcd issue? Backlight on, small streaks and spots

So I was watching a youtube video tonight and part of the screen was black and I see these thick, kind of discolored lines, just a shade darker than the color of the backlight. I was like ok, just be the Youtube video, their cam was dirty whatever. Then I thought back a few days ago when I quickly noticed the same thing and put it off as nothing. Well I further researched it and found a completely black image on my sd card and displayed it at full brightness with the lights off and I found an annoying, yet not crutial, defect (maybe defect). It appears as though glue or something is on the underside of the lcd blocking light from coming through. I can barely find it if any light is displayed on the screen, but this dark video just made it seem so prominent. I wonder if anyone else has this issue or if it is infact a defect. I found it by viewing a dark image at medium brightness in a dark room. Putting brightness at 100% does make it a bit more prominent. I mean I could live with it I guess but it is extremely annoying to find something so stupid on such a great new phone. I wonder if it is a common issue and I ask you fellow gs3 owners to take a look at yours and tell me if it is just me. I have attached a photo I took with my dslr. The colors are kind of looking overdone because I had to bump my ISO up to like 6400 to even get a picture of it because it is so dark and I didn't want to run outside to grab the tripod. You should get the idea. The picture makes it look a lot worse than it really is. I have looked at the screen and I see no discolorations when the screen is off and I see nothing of that pattern while the screen is off anywhere on the lcd, but I couldn't find my super bright flashlight. What a day!

Yeah I notice this in the dark when watching a YouTube video. Its apparently a samoled issue and something I never noticed on samoled + screen on sgs2. Its very common and have seen a few threads about it. The good news is that you only really see it in a pitch black room when using the phone on a dark screen. I've never noticed it durng the day
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
Thanks for that. Now I know its not just me. You really settled my nerves, I was about the be pissed. The screen is beautiful beside that. It is just when it is pitch dark and I am looking at something black, otherwise, if there is probably 25% of anything else that is lit on the screen I probably won't see it. I guess I just caught it on one of those rare occasions when I am using my phone in the pitch dark.
Do you happen to know what those threads were called? I am having trouble wording the issue exactly lol
Nooo that is top much. Yes all galaxies have that issue but I think yours is too much. Exchange it i would say
Its just like this, apparently called "ink marks" Last picture in the op here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658601
Tbh I really only notice in landscape and not in portrait and the only ones I see are the ones on the left and the dot on the right if I do see them. I'd hate to take it back to get one with its own unique set of the same marks. Plus I rooted it and I'm not quite sure if the flash counter clicked , damn verizon
Finally I'm not the only one. It only happens with video and it doesn't matter out you play YouTube app browser or videos you have saved. And try recording and the play back is bloody red skill over the place. Best buy associates were freaking out with my old phone. Over had the gs3 replaced 3 times. And third times the charm. When life gives you lemons hope your within the 14 day trail period.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
Oh and no fix apparently according to best buy its a internal defect so hopefully anyone and everyone else has time to exchange.

I thought the same thing until a week ago when watching something in the complete dark. For those that think their phone is perfect you'd have to check under the same circumstances to know for sure. A dark room and playing videos. I noticed it especially on netfix. I started a video and before the movie starts it goes to a black screen and thats when I first noticed. I do wonder if its all phones or if only a few of us have this defect

This is a defective samoled. While the glue blotches exist in nearly all displays, yours are especially bad. The fact that you can record them and actually see them while playing videos is the deciding factor here.
For example, I can see those too - but only in complete darkness and while the brightness is at max - any kind of video or soft keys wipe out those blemishes. In other words, those blotches should be invisible under any usage conditions. Otherwise, the quality control has passed a lemon, which is clearly your case.
Exchange that phone for a new one.
Like I said, I if there is anything on the screen I can't see it. I have the reason it looks do prominent in the pics is that I boosted iso and it exposed for the baclight. I had to try really really hard to get a picture of what was going on there
yes. i have the exact same problem. thinking of getting it replaced today.
heres what my looked like:
made it in paint
The black ink thing is a common issue but there has to be some extent to which it's too much. I usually don't notice it and I can forget about it but for those times I do, it is quite the let down. I'll probably take it to Sprint this coming week and see what can be done.
My screen...not the best picture but at least it shows the blobs. I could care less about the black marks towards the top of the image. It's just the ones on the bottom that bother me.

Ahh yours is much like mine. I have tbh, and I tried finding it today during the day and no lights on with brightness maxed and I could not. I think I am going to stop stressing about it as it is only visible in very limited situations. I thank you guys for helping me out with this and really settling my nerves to know I didn't just get a bad one and that it is quite a common issue with different variations.

Yellow tint on S4 screen

I have this annoying yellow tint on my S4's screen, but disappears when the phone is tilted over 45 degrees. Is this faulty ? Shall I return it ? Or is there a way I can fix the gamma through an app without rooting the phone ?
Brightness set on full
Auto-tone, Auto-brightness disabled
Screen settings set as standard

I have this too, interested if this is a defect or just the colour tone of the amoled on the gs4
I have the S2 and it's blue compared to my display on computer, and I don't even notice it unless I put it against the computer display like you did.
Maybe try other display calibration, I hear you can change them.
Ok, been doing some google research on this -
There's always going to be a slight yellow tint to the particular amoled screen used in the GS4. However, to reduce the effect, set your screen mode to MOVIE.
Movie mode provides the best colour accuracy and also white point of the available choices. I can confirm this is the case having just spent a few minutes comparing colour charts to my girlfriend's very well-calibrated iphone 5.
So I would set it to MOVIE. The whites still won't be IPS display white, but then IPS can't touch the beautiful blacks on amoled. Horses for courses. Hope this helps.
@paddlyaz can you provide sources of where you got this info ? -- Edit : I just tried it, all that did was make the display washed off..Yellow tint still visible
It may LOOK washed out to you - but this is an AMOLED display, which is naturally very colour saturated.
If you compare the gs4 to an iphone 5 like I did just now, you'll see that even in Movie mode, the colours are a little MORE saturated than even the iphone 5 has to offer. The tint is a side-effect of this. IPS displays like the iphone may offer truer whites but amoled displays like the gs4 destroy them in terms of saturation and black levels.
It all depends on what you prefer on a phone.
In terms of the GS4, some people find the 'dynamic' and 'standard' modes vibrant and eye-pleasing - but they're not at all accurate and will exaggerated, innaccurate representations of your photos, videos etc. I have one photo of me in a yellow jumper (fashion mistake I know). When I have it on 'standard' it looks like I just came back from a two week holiday in Chernobyl. In movie mode, it looks exactly how it looks in real-life (i.e. still disgusting but accurate).
Here are a couple of links that describe it more:
http://www.gsmarena.com/displaymate_tests_galaxy_s4_screen_gives_it_the_thumbs_up-news-5928.php
http://gizmodo.com/5995376/galaxy-s-iv-display-shoot+out-how-does-it-compare
I wish I have another camera to show you the difference between my iPhone and S4 ... The iPhone's screen is bright white compared to the yellow tint on my S4. If this is a "feature" then it's not really efficient now is it =\
Maybe there is a way I can manually edit the gamma, this should fix the problem I guess. Or just exchange it for another one.
did you read ANY of my post?!
It's the trade off you pay for having perfect black levels and saturated colours.
The only way you're ever going to see perfect whites is if you get an iphone/htc one - e.g. an IPS display.
But then you're going to be stuck with 'blacks' that are actually grey. And that SUCKS.
People have differing opinions on which trade-off they'd rather have. Personally I'll take a slightly 'warmer' screen in return for having deep, inky blacks.
Hmm I see, so the display type is the reason why the yellow tint appears eh ? Interesting, thanks for the links too, going to check them out.
all screens will be slightly different from each other - but yes, amoled screens will almost always have either a slight YELLOW tint, or a slight BLUE tint - in other words, a slight exaggeration of one particular tone. If you have the time, do a google search and you'll see this was a common 'issue' flagged up on both the gs3 and gs2.
Your best bet is to do the following:
-set screen mode to MOVIE
-disable 'auto adjust screen tone'
-disable auto brightness.
You will never EVER see perfect whites on an amoled screen, and anyone who tells you they have them is lying out of their arse. Most reviews for the GS4 and also in the articles I linked you state that the GS4 is the most accurate amoled screen so far though.
If still disappointed, your best bet is the iphone5/htc one/nexus 4 etc
I think having an exaggerated blue tone is better than a yellow tone, in my own opinion.
Anyone else having this issue ?
I noticed this playing around with the S4 in the store. Still, much better than the S3 white point.
bad yellow tint
Hi everyone,
I received my s4 last week and found it yellowish as well. I have read everything regarding the screen yellow tint and the fact that it's because of the type of screen. I was going to give up but my girlfriend got one today as well and the comparison is very clear: her whites are so much better!
I have tried to take photos of them, and it looks greenish on the shots but you can see the difference. FYI the screen are both using the same settings: auto brightness off, brightness at the maximum, both screen mode in adapt display (I have tried the movie mode without noticing a change).
Mine is on the right if you couldn't see. You can clearly see the difference in the colour and the quality of the screen. I also noticed that the viewing angle are way worse on mine, the phone takes a greenish colour.
Finally I have very strong smearing/ghosting as soon as the screen background is black. For example when I am in the settings, if I scroll up and down, the thin lines separating the sections actually disappear whilst the menu scrolls. The thicker separator get a purple line until the scolling stops. Once again, the smearing on my girlfriend's phone is existant but much less strong. The thin separators are still visible even while the phone is scrolling.
I am definitely bringing it back to the store tomorrow. I am very disappointed with the screen even though the phone is great. I wouldn't change for a One, just for a good one.

I had the same yellow tint on screen and tried a few different firmwares thinking maybe its a software issue but nothing fixed it.
Picked up a new s4 last night and this one is perfect. The thing I noticed is the new one is assenbled in Vietnam and the old one
was assembled in China. Over all the build quality on the new one feels much better along with audio quality.
Maybe a quality control issues in some factories
Cheers

You'll see it when you pull the battery, there should be a sticker there.
I am located in Toronto and we dont have any samsung stores here
so i actually bought another one from this dealer i found on kijiji.
The new one was sealed and its from Hong Kong (but assembled in Vietnam)
Cheers

I looked at mine and it says made in Vietnam... But I would agree to say that there is a problem with quality control overall. My guess is that they need to produce as much as possible to avoid any shortage. I had the same problem with my Note 1 and could be bothered to change it, this time I won't let it go.
I will keep you posted.

I had to go to another branch and thankfully they had a model with a white tone screen. I compared it there and they did indeed see the yellow-tone in my phone. I am getting a refund soon, it's not really worth all this trouble i'm fed up of the customer service experience with Samsung.

Display quality compared to previous AMOLED devices?

I have a note 2 since it's release and a gs2 before that, and I'm completely sick of AMOLED because both look terrible due to the issues below.
So, my questions: resolution and PPI aside, of course,
Does your Note 3 screen look like fresh urine?

Does it have ink spots(easily visible on pitch black backgrounds and in dark rooms)?
Does the colors, especially whites, look grainy?
Thanks for answering!
I should mention I've seen two of my friends Note 3 devices and both have the greenish yellow tint.
I'll have a hard time continuing to buy amoled devices if samsung keeps shipping these defective displays.
Good thread. I am also curious of screen burn in... as in some reviews, they mentioned it and note 2 had some issues with it.
My N9005 screen is not yellow/greenish. Don't have any spots of any kind either.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
Mine has a slight tint but isn't noticeable. Also, the screen is literally pitch black in the dark with no spots.
With my S II i was able to see when the screen was on even tho it showed pitch black. I honestly can't see it with my Note 3. I can't believe they managed to produce a true black color.
Sent from my Note 3
The yellow tint reminds me of my Apple iphone days. So the culprit was indeed Samsung making the panels for apple? HAHAH
To get a less yellow screen on the iphone 4s was like a lottery.
My GS4 also was yellow, but when I tilted the screen a little it went blue.
My screen has a bit of the yellow tint, but also turns bluish when I tilt it. No spots whatsoever though. My last 3 samsung phones all had mura & spots, but this one is perfect.

The true black is from turning the pixels backlight off.

Yeah, I know. But they said that with S II, but I was still able to see it was on in the dark.

The White hue is never going to be pure white. I suggest you do a bit of research on how displays actually work. That said, it's the same white as on my IPS-LED laptop.
My SGS3 had horrible black spots, my Note 3 does not have a single one.
If I have to choose between AmoLED with not-eyebreaking white, and LCD with black that more resembles a light grey, I'll settle for the amoLED without a second doubt.
I can't stand white on a display to begin with. I'm photosensitive and prone to migraines. it's too bloody painful to look at anything white and lit. Of course every single idiotic designer insists on using as much white as possible, because 'that's the trend!'. No, that's Apple copying. But then you do own an iMac, so nobody accused you of being original... (I'm not talking to anyone in particular.)
The biggest advantage to AmoLED over LCD is that black is BLACK. And anything black doesn't use power.
That said, setting it to Movie mode gives off much more natural colours.

I'm not sure about the S II but the note 3 is definitely true black with pixels actually OFF. Get an all black image and go in a pitch dark room and you will see nothing...
I have a PS Vita and that is blotchy in the dark... shame.

No it doens't look like fresh urine, thrut be told.. note 2 screen sucked .. low light , bad whites ( no whites..) etc .. note 1 screen was great .. but was a battery hog..
and when the screen is displaying black.. it's just like the phone is turn of ..the first TRUE black I have encountered, yes they say that with every amoled they release... but in practice we know that is not the true .
Samsung just put together the best of both screens (note 1 and note 2) and then some more !

So, what is the fraction of units that does not have any issue with the display whatsoever? My wife's Note 2 has perfect display, but my Note 3 has different brightness/contrast/saturation on top of the screen compared to the bottom... On monday I am to go and replace the display on warranty but I am affraid that the new screen will not be any better or even worse... In my case there is no color tint or lines or anything else just that difference in brightness... Is it worth it?
My Note 3 had no display problems. Same quality as my S4 which is great

I have also had galaxy note 2 and I'm now on the galaxy note 3. I had to order a replacement of one of my galaxy note threes because I did find the yellow tent with blue green as you describe. But other phone is quite good in color. It has very good whites. However it does suffer with a bit of a pinkish or darker discoloration in the lower third of the screen mostly in the right corner. I am awaiting a replacement from my carrier. Hopefully it will be better than this one. However I have kind of gotten used to it and otherwise the display is brilliant.

How does the same issue I had with one of my note 3 phones. It was similar to your galaxy S4. I think that there are probably more than one factory where the screens are manufactured. There must be one batch of screams coming from a factory that have a warmer more yellow tint that shifts strongly to Bluegreen when angling the screen. The other batch of screens must be more in the wider redder with only minimal tinting when shifting the screen on an angle.

[Q] Samsung Display Problem !!!

I bought a Note 3 on October 4th 2013.... And I was an extremely proud owner of an awesome phone... And...
And then after a few days I noticed a rectangular smudge near the back button on the glass. And also a purple flickering on certain widgets when quickly moving between home screens (check below video).
https://db.tt/k8Gg6PkK
So, I asked for a phone replacement... they said no... and finally after a small fight got the glass and display replaced...
Guess what.... the new phone I got had a permanent smudge as well, but at a different location. Moreover the display issue was still there !!!
And then after a BIGGG fight they agreed to replace the phone. They said they dint have stock and finally refunded the money.
So... I waited a month... and decided to buy the Note 3 again thinking that the previous cases were just bad luck. Got it day before yesterday.
No problem with the glass and all and everything running smoothly. But...
But... the issue shown in the video was still there. So, i decided to do a small investigation. Went around a few Samsung showrooms. And as most of you know, all phones displayed in showrooms are the Snapdragon version (N9005) and not the Exynos version (I have no idea why !!!). I transferred the same background image to those phones.. added the google now widget to the home screen... and tried to reproduce the issue on the N9005s...
Guess what... In none of the shops I could reproduce the issue.... As i was about to leave the last shop, the owner walks in and he has a Note 3.... this was an Exynos version ofcourse... I tried to reproduce the issue on it...
And voila.... there it was... the same issue..... So.... I saw the same issue on different phones.... but all were the Exynos ones..... the Snapdragon versions have no probs !!!
So the question is..... WHAT IS GOING ON ? ARE WE BEING SOLD SUB STANDARD PRODUCTS IN INDIA ? WHY DOES BOTH THE VERSIONS HAVE DIFFERENT DISPLAYS ? OR IS IT A CHIPSET ISSUE ? OR A GPU ISSUE ? OR A DISPLAY DRIVER ISSUE ?
I AM JUST SAD !!!
Geez... u have to screw the samsung there for displaying snapdragon, but yet selling exynos.
This is a cheating to consumer.

Well, I definitely would luv to... Then I will have to put in all that time and effort. But I am seriously considering it... !!!
Anyone else seen similar issues ?
The easiest way to reproduce is when you have a new device and have not used the S-notes. Have the S-note widget on the homescreen. Just tap on it. This will open the welcome page for the S-note... its like a small video.... so between the time when the widget is touched and that video kinda thingy comes up you should be able to see the purple patches here and there....
You can get rid/minimise the purple cast by using Lux. Go under night mode and decrease the screen temp(warm up). Doing this may exacerbate other shortcomings of the screen though.
e.g lines and splotches on grey backgrounds.

Well... I had read about the purple smearing even before buying the Note 3....This should be the workaround to reduce that I suppose ?
Smearing is OK.... this is like random purple patches coming up here and there.... And what concerns me is why it is seen only on the Exynos version and not on the Snapdragon one !!!
Any explanation for that ?

I looked at the vid you uploaded and saw you trying to replicate the purple smearing(quickly transioning between homescreens). I didn't see any purple splotches(not saying they don't exist).
I myself own a Snapdragon N3 and the smearing is present, aswell as a line that runs across the screen (visible on greys and dimly lit display). My screen doesn't suffer from purple splotches although I think it's a common occurance on amoled displays(considered some what normal). I notice it the most when pulling down the status bar, and scrolling through my feeds in gReader, with white text on a black background at low brightness (mainly at night). The first thing you could do is increase the brightness which helps, but I find changing the color temp has worked a whole lot better.
From my own experience with my first amoled(non-technical), the purple smear is most prevalent with transitions from black to grey/white at low brightness. It even occurs on LCDs(which I myself tried and confirmed on an ipad at very low brightness). It's more widespread on amoled because of the deep almost pure black level.
Now with the splotches your concerned about; I believe this is a drawback of amoled manufacturing and to a certain degree is normal. If changing the brightness or color temp doesn't reduce it to an acceptable level for you, then I guess your only other option is taking it back for a replacement or getting a new device without an amoled screen. If your rooted and your warranty happens to be void, you could try a custom kernel with gamma support(others have reported this helps?).
I apologise for my dumb downed explanation as I'm not schooled on the technical aspects of screen technology. Here is a good write with a more technical background which you may find more informative (Mura Effect & AMOLED).

Well... I was also of tbe opinion that this was somehow a more dreadful recreation of the purple smearing effect. But here, there is no transition from black or even a dark color for that matter. The wideget is all white and if you carefully see the portions where the purple patches flicker is actually the whiter portion of the wallpaper (that is between the leaves). And the rest of the wallpaper is mostly green.
Now, this pretty easy to reproduce on my handset. With that wallpaper and the google now widget in place and a few quick movement between home screens and it can be easily seen.
At the samsung showroom where they display the n9005s (though we can get only the exynos versuon here in India!!! ) I put the same wallpaper and added the google now widget and recreated the exact scenario. I tried for atleast 5 minutes continuously in two shops and I couldnt reproduce the issue....
At the last shop the owner walks in with a Note 3 and his is an Exynos version. And I reproduced the issue with two flicks on the screen !!!

I can assure you that this happens on both exynos and snapdragon models. Some devices have variations in the lower base brightness(0), this can exacerbate this effect.
You going to have to realise this is a downside of amoled screen technology. In the mean time you CAN take steps to minimize it!:
1. Have you tried the app I mentioned above? Download it and set the White Balance(WB) to Fluro. Then see if you can recreate the purple cast.*
2. When you start to notice the purple cast, increase the screen brightness. It shouldn't occur at higher brightness levels.
Do these things then tell me if you can recreate your problem.
*I've found changing the WB is enough and can avoid the Purple smear even at very low brightness levels(sub-zero).

Sorry for yet another long reply !!!
I went to the Samsung service center and showed the display problem. Being within the first 7 days of purchase they readily gave me the certificate for replacement.
So, once I get my new phone this will be the first thing I try. Anyhow, once I realized that this was a problem with all phones I was kinda ready to live with it. As I knew the scenarios where this would be seen and I could just avoid those situations.
But, what got me mad was this :
The first time I bought the phone, there was a permanent rectangular smudge near the back button. If i really clean it, it would become less visible, but with use and finger smudges it would become very much visible again. So, I complained and they replaced the full front panel.
The second time, I was using a pouch (cloth). Permanent marks began appear on the top of the glass where the edges of the pouch used to touch the glass. The same kind - clean it really hard and it would could not be seen but with use they reappear. This was really annoying. So, this time I made a lot of fuss and got them to agree to get the phone replaced. They dint have stock and they ended up refunding the full money.
So i waited for the S5 launch just to see if it was worth a shot. Once it was out, I decided to buy the Note 3 again.
So, the third time I got it, its was wth 4.4.2 and to be frank I was surprised at how smooth it was. I mean the performance was fluid. I was happy. The display issue I could still see. That is when I had done the small investigation regarding the Snapdragon and Exynos versions. Anyhow, as I said, I was ready to live with it. And this time to avoid all problems, I had a Samsung Flip wallet. And guess what, after 4 days, 2 mark appeared on the screen corresponding to the card slot in the flip wallet !!! The same kind - clean - goes - touch - comes back !!!!
4 days !!! Cmon !!! I look after my phone like it were my baby !!! Does this even have Gorilla Glass 3 !!! I used a S3 before this. And i have used a flip cover with it and for the major part I was using a cheap pouch. It dint have a single mark or scratch on it when i sold it !!!
So, am sure of two things : the display issue is gonna be there and the screen is gonna get easily scratched (or get some kinda marks !!!). So, thinking of getting a tempered glass screen protector (I hate using screen protectors !!! )
And I can swear, the display issue is EASILY reproducible on the Exynos version and I couldn't manage to reproduce the issue on 2 N9005s after trying for atleast 10 minutes each !!!
If you havent used S-Note at all, just keep its widget on the homescreen and launch it from there. I should see the problem if it is there. It should be like, the very first time u use S-note, that is, when you launch it, a small video kinda page load.

One more update :
The easiest way to reproduce the issue is to just launch the S-Note app using the widget from the home screen. Just that it should be like the first time use. So, when u touch the S-Note widget, the app launches with a small intro video kinda thingy. So, when this happens, multiple and random patches of purple can be seen all across the screen.
If you don't mind spending 10 minutes, here is what you can do :
If you are already using S-note :
1) Backup your notes from S-Note.
2) If the S-Note widget is already there in your home screen, remove it.
3) Goto app manager and delete cache/data related to S-Note.
4) Put the S-note widget on the home screen (Now it would be green in color with the picture of a note).
5) Open S-note using the widget.
If you haven't used S-Note at all :
1) Add S-note widget to homescreen if not already present.
2) Launch S-note using the widget
You should be able to see the purple patches right away and very much easily.
Now the update is that I visited 3 more Samsung showrooms and tried to reproduce the issue (using the above mentioned method) on the handset on display there (which are N9005s). THE ISSUE IS NOT SEEN !!!
I can say with utmost confidence that the above steps would reproduce the issue in the Exynos versions (Well, after checking on 5 Exynos devices ). If someone with an SM-N900 could verify this, it would be really helpful.
I can post a video once I receive my replacement device.
I am seriously considering suing Samsung !!! Not for giving me a handset with a AMOLED display that has some inherent issues, but for :
1) Showing something in all showrooms across the country and selling something different all together.
2) Having this issue just on the Exynos versions and not on the Snapdragon version.
3) The glass getting marked so easily even though it is supposedly Gorilla Glass 3.
Short answer: I tried what you said and I couldn't reproduce your issue!
I can quite easily produce the purple smearing but not on the S-note intro video!
Maybe your not going crazy.?
On a side note?, I've had a Note 2 in my possession and apart from some lines, which can only be seen on certain grey backgrounds, it doesn't suffer the purple smear problem(Exynos one I tried didn't). If this issue continues to drive you up the wall, and considering all N900s you've tried exhibit the same issue, maybe consider a Note 2 (DittoNote3 ROM?) or import a N9005.
Alternatively, rally together all the disgruntled N900 owners and sue the pants of Samsung.?
Best of Luck either way.

And yeah, lemme see if I can get a few more people behind this with me....

Display Issues Thread

We can discuss display issues here. Here's my situation:
Let's be clear: MOST display have problems. My iMac I'm posting this from is tinted yellow on the left half and magenta toward the bottom right corner; my Nexus 7 2013 had edge light bleeding; 3 iPad minis retinas had edge yellowing; I returned and exchanged my way through 5 iPhones 5ses and 5 Nexus 5s before I found one without display problems; etc. But these faults are subtle enough that the general population isn't sensitive to them, or else they mostly don't care.
Sure enough, my Note 4 has display issues. I'm not sure if this is Mura Effect stuff or just bad quality control. Check it out below.

The picture above doesn't do it justice, it's a lot more apparent when you've been using the actual display in real life for awhile. Also disregard the scan lines. But notice about 1/3 of the way from the top, there's a subtle horizontal line where the display below it is more gray, and more yellow above it. And if you divide the display diagonally from the bottom left to the top right, then the left half is tinted yellow compared to the right half, especially toward the upper left corner of the display. And the entire right edge of the display is tinted magenta, which is more apparent toward the bottom right.
Above I used the Note 4's Screen Write ability to document the imperfections as I see them.
Don't get me wrong, the display is nice. But I will likely have to flip through several devices until I end up with a good display. Are you guys noticing some Mura Effect problems, or other problems? Talk about them here.
PROTIP: to see the Mura Effect imperfections on your Note 4 display, grab this image and view it in a pitch black room and manually dim the display to the lowest level.
All I see is someone who is a perfectionist
So far I haven't had a display Issue. I keep at full brightness at all times.
Anyway, I know people are having issues and I am sorry you are too.
I got lucky I guess
From the BadAss Note 4
I dont notice this at all on my white note 4. Even if it so faint then the difference is neglible. Its not really worth the trouble going through 10 different devices just to get rid of this effect. But i turned off all lights and its night here so no outside lights and i see nothing at all wrong with my display. i also dont see anything wrong in your images either.
OP def has issues.
I see grey lines on the image that I'm not even sure is an artifact of the display or what you purposely have showing on the screen n I do see the slight greying 1/3 the way down, but again, what do you have displaying on the phone to represent this and how do you know that image itself isn't creating the artifacts, not the display?
No way YOU get that many lemons... either you're too picky or your method of testing is flawed.

The gray lines are from the camera, I edited the OP to reflect that. The image is just a plain white image, the same one i used to demonstrate display problems with the nexus 5 earlier this year. It's not that i get unlucky, it's that displays usually have problems. The apple store manager let me replace my 5s to get a good one because he acknowledged the edge yellowing and that colors were inconsistent even across the 10 display models. He told me outright that displays are calibrated within certain limits, and every display will appear differently, but that edge yellowing is an actual problem and he could see it after I pointed it out. I can't be blamed that most people aren't bothered by these problems, or that they're too insensitive to notice them. And again, the pictures don't do it justice...we're talking about a display you hold in front of your face live and stare at for hours daily.
On my current Note 4 what i mainly notice is that the gradient, where the yellow tint of the upper left gradually blends into the magenta of the bottom right. For me that's noticeable constantly. I can't make myself not see it, it's pretty apparent despite the image in the OP not showing it off well. As for the horizontal separation between the milky upper 1/3 and the gray lower 2/3, I'm only actually aware of that whenever i scroll, because eyes are made to notice contrast so it becomes apparent whenever my eyes are tracking something as it passes that border.
Nope. Perfect display here.
my problem.... and a big one, i cant stop staring at it. lol
Starting to have buyers remorse, tempted to consider a 6+ if stores dont have stock to exchange this for soon. Its so gross, this is all i see whenever im using my $830 phone with the "best mobile display ever" according to display mate:
Also, not necessarily a problem just something i noticed, this display gets SUPER bright in direct sunlight (its max brightness is only allowed on auto brightness, you cant set it there manually). That makes all colors super washed out, its weird, but so far not a problem. What im writing about here though is something I've never noticed on an lcd displays: whenthe note 4 SAMOLED is at this max brightness because youre viewing it in direct sunlight, if you use your finger to cast a shadow on the display, it makes this really bizarre inverted shadow effect. Try it out, its kinda crazy!
Hey am having tmobile send me new device because of this issue, for me it was really noticeable in landscape mode browsing Web at night once eyes start to adjust to screen brightness, I can see on mine were one side is whiter and the other a greyish purple hue.

My note 3 did not have this issue.
It's highly unlikely that you're going to score a unit with absolutely consistent white balance across the display. I haven't had an AMOLED screen that doesn't have it to some degree, and i've had many. Even my Note 4 has it, but it's very difficult to see unless you're really looking for it.
When I first got the S4 a couple years ago I got a unit that was so bad that when looking at the keyboard in landscape it was clearly 2 totally different colors on each side, but I exchanged and got one that was much, much better, but still not completely 100% even. So you might try an exchange if you can, but don't expect absolute perfection. Most displays on most devices will have some degree of imperfection if you look for it, whether it's white balance issues, back-light bleed, uneven brightness etc etc. An AMOLED panel is still likely to give you a better overall experience than a comparable LCD.
As many others have said in this forum, just try not to look too hard at the finest details ("mura" effect for example)...it's still mass produced hardware. If your screen is that noticeable though, exchange it.
I had this problem with my black note 4, my wife has the white one so it was clearly there when put side by side, tmobile said it was ok so i had to take her phone the next time and then they said it was bad. Something interesting, the white ones seem to not have this problem.
Yea got shipping info for new device today, should be here Monday, which ever one has least defect I'm gonna keep.

my gf has a white note 4 from vzw .. i have a black note 4 tmo.. the only thing i notice between our devices is that hers has a slight yellow tint but her display is a little brighter.. i have seen this with my old iphone's if i ever had to get a warranty replacement form apple .. the replacements always had a yellow tint but were brighter ..
so far no issues with my note 4 .. i got lucky this time around :good:
Lol.... I think I beat all of you. This happened a few hours ago while I was using Yelp and Google Maps to find breakfast. Needless to say I'm pretty upset right now, but thankfully I have my Note 2 still, so at least I have something to use until T-Mobile helps me out. I'll be going there in a few hours to talk to a rep to request a new unit. Hopefully they don't try and **** me because I bought in via T-Mobile's website versus in store or because I don't have Jump anymore.

Dude is that the way it looks ALL THE time? Dude GO WITH THE WHITE ONE. I know I am I have the charcoal black and seems to be a bigger problem with the black ones than white I went in to the tmobile store and they had a white and black one. The black one was the same as mine (bluish white/warm color) compared to the WHITE note 4 the white looked great. Sure the black seemed brighter but I think that's what hurt the device in the first place. Sending mine in today or tomorrow already set.
Sent from another Galaxy! Note the difference!

Nick you should save yourself the hassle and just call tmobile customer care. The lady right away told me to send then my phone and as soon as they got the tracking number they will send me a new one. I'm going with the white if I can.

I exchanged mine 2 times because they had dust under the screen . Too bad I didn't check the screen uniform last time.
Anyway I'm on my 3rd Note 4. I don't have yellow/blue/purple tilted part but the white is not uniform as I can tell the top half of my screen is a little bit dimmer. It's something that an average user wouldn't notice but I do because I'm extremely picky. Anyway my dad's note 3's screen has uniform white so maybe you can score a perfect amoled screen but then maybe you'd end up with another problem like dust or dead pixel.
Sometimes I hate myself for having such good eyes lol

My black Note 4 also has some issues with the screen uniformity. My right side has a pink hue as described above. I don't have the yellow tint on the left. Also under direct sunlight the screen creates a strange effect, it looks like the colors are inverted. If you place your hand to create a shadow over the screen then the colors look correct without the inversion, it is a very strange phenomena. I am trying to decide whether to exchange it for a white one or get another black one.
Are the white version somehow better in quality control?

Mine was looked like this. And everyone in the BestBuy from where I got this said this is NORMAL. Fortunately I could able to get a replacement from the other BestBuy. The new one is still not perfect (it looks similar to yours), but I can live with it since I don't want to send it for Samsung's Warranty service.
(My local BestBuy said they can exchange the smartphone for only one time. If I have a problem with the replacement, I have to send it back to the manufacturer for repair. I couldn't find this from policy in BestBuy website, but that's what they said to me.)
