Demo units at Best Buy - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" General

I was at my local Best Buy and was surprised to see Kindle Fire HDX demo units. So I took a quick video. I can say that the screen is amazing clear and bright. This is definitely the best Amazon tablet yet. I already pre-ordered to can't wait to get my hands on it.

Hi guys. I am a graduate student and I've been wanting to buy a tablet. Most out there are expensive and in terms of battery life, my 14" laptop with an SSD beats them all. Only problem is, of course, the size of the laptop.
So I have some questions regarding this kinde fire. Looking at the interface, it looks like a constricted version of android and as Besos said, its more of a multimedia device.
The main functions I'm looking for my tablet are: email, reading, viewing videos of PPT lectures, web browsing, watching movies occasionally. Without the tablet being rooted, would all this be possible or is it just for games, web surfing, and videos/music? I would like to leave my device unrooted for as long as possible.
Plus, looking at the specs, this thing would make an excellent android tablet.
Also, how does this GPU compare to the nVidia Tegra?
Thanks!
Get a reading device. A kindle (not Fire) offers quite a lot for a low price.
That's for the reading. For the other stuff, I would not know what to reccomend.

From what I have read the AF is built to be first and foremost an ereader. Games probably secondary especially with only 512MB of RAM (unless they are from Amazon App Store.) I could be wrong though.
If I were you, I would look harder at other REAL tablets and not closed garden ereaders like the AF appears to be. The dual core CPU would be great on an android tablet. It already is on many. And, by many accounts, quad cores are not too far away. Tabs that are tablets first though.
Price is important. Desired functions are more so. IMO.
Would I recommend? No.
I've been hearing that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus might be coming out with a price near $250. If that is the case, I'll get that instead. Luckily, I will have until the end of October to decide, since that's when the Samsung Tab will be releasing. However, I'm assuming/hoping that we will know its price by next week or so.
Hell, I'll be willing to pay upto $300 for it. I preordered the Kindle Fire with a leather cover for a total of $250.

Wise move. A lot of new items will be released and I suspect many (if not most) in your price/needed specs range will far exceed the AF.
Wish I had these options in grad school!
You cold do this all on the NC for $150 or less, unrooted. Also, the NC can be rooted and custom ROMs are available.
I would say yes. Both quick office and documents to go are available in the amazon app store
A couple of people at work have mentioned the Amazon Kindle Fire in passing. I've looked at the specs, it looks pretty poor.
Several people have shown me their iPad 2 or HP tablet - huge 10.1" things.
One person has compared his iPad camera with my Galaxy Tab 7's camera and said the Galaxy Tab comes out better.
I can fit my Galaxy Tab in my pocket. It has Kindle for Android on it.
I chose my device carefully out of some really budget budget devices, and larger & more expensive devices.
Here you can now pick up a Galaxy Tab 7" 3G (GPS, Wifi) 16Gb for £399 from Tesco's Electronics dept, £349 from BestBuy, £299.99 from Tesco Direct (24hr wait, but the desk is in the store!) or £299.98 from PCWorld. I got mine from Tesco Direct, because it was a weekend and the nearest PCWorld that stocks them is over the road from work.
If you don't need 3G (I understand the Fire doesn't have 3G) I believe you can now pick up a 32Gb Wifi-only model from Asda (Walmart) for £249 ($387) and it will be an order of magnitude better than the Fire. There's also a heap of cheap things on eBay from China (that Maplin (Radio Shack) buy & resell with enormous margins)
When people ask me about it, I reply with:
Do you want a next gen Kindle, or do you want a tablet?
That seems to get them into the right frame of mind. The Fire is no more or less a next gen Kindle. It's aimed to compete against the Nook Color and the iPod Touch, being a portable media device.
thanks a lot guys! I actually just cancelled my preorder for the KF and bought the HTC Flyer.
FWIW smart move!
Now take a look at the adonit jot stylus. Amazing.
I've been looking for a pen/stylus to buy.
Would that work with the HTC flyer or am I better of buying the HTC scribe pen for it?
Gotta say I am not familiar with the stylus scribe for the HTC. One would presume an item custom made for a dedicated device would be preferable. I can say the adonit jot performs amazingly on the Transformer on SuperNotes!
You might try it out. If it doesn't work for you, return it. It would appear their Return Policy is liberal enough here.

Will amazon sell this ?

Do you think amazon will sell the nexus 7since there kind of going after the kindle fire.I'm thinking they probably won't sell it which is too bad since I have a $40 gift card to amazon.
That would be really ironic, seeing how everyone is calling the Nexus a Kindle Fire killer. They ARE selling accessories, I do know that... but I am really curious as well. Anyone got an answer?
I know they sell the Nook devices which are currently the main competitors of the Kindle devices, so I'm guessing that they probably will.

3rd party sellers sell the Nook products on the Amazon site, not Amazon themselves. I assume it'll be the same with the Nexus 7 since only 3rd party sellers sell the Galaxy Nexus (GSM version anyway. Amazon Wireless will sell you the Verizon and Sprint versions).
Considering Gamestop is selling the Nexus 7 it's possible. but i seriously doubt it.
Amazon has never sold an iPad, although it sold every iPod model imaginable. People wondered for a long time why Amazon did't sell the iPad. Then they released the Kindle Fire.
Amazon isn't like the Apple store. Tons of manufacturers list practically every sort of tablet and phone there.
So, I don't see why not.
I'm hoping that Amazon or a 3rd party will sell the tablet... But I'm not sure if I should pre order it or wait until it becomes available on Amazon.
I wish the tablet came in different colors :/
Yea amazon has never sold an iPad but they have pretty much every other tablet on there. Would be awesome if they end up selling it. I'm still debating whether or not to get one as I have a fire right now

We need a poll of how many people purchase the Nexus on Amazon using the Fire...

Kindle Fire Refurbs for $70

I'm thinking about picking one of these up tomorrow if the sale works out. Note that this sale was supposed to be last week, but they postponed it until tomorrow due to some technical difficulty.

I would be new to the Kindle Fire, but not Android. I have a Nexus 7, Evo LTE, and have owned and sold several other phones and tablets. This one interests me because it's a cheap option for the kids, and I would also like to take advantage of the free monthly kindle lending library book with my Prime account. The most important thing is to get the Play store on there so I can take advantage of my purchases. It looks like I can root the fire, install the play store, and a market opener app, unroot, and still keep the existing OS. I believe the original OS is required to use the extra Prime features (and also a couple of kids apps I've found exclusive to the kindle). I may eventually go with a CM10.1 based ROM in the future, but I would like to at least try the stock OS for the Prime features first.
One hesitation I have is the lack of storage for kids movies. I've seen the nook tablet refurbs for $80 over the holidays, which I know has 1GB ram and SD card slot, but the kf seems to have better software support both from the stock software to the custom development.
So, what do you guys think? Is this the best option for a sub-$100 tablet for kids?
If you install a custom rom (CM10.1) will the amazon market still recognize the tablet as a kindle fire, and can you still install the kindle fire edition apps?
UPDATED: Sale was changed to $70 from $75. Supposed to start tomorrow at 8AM PST.
Kindle Fire Refurbs for $75
It would be a very good choice to get a kindle fire. And if you wanted to go cheaper you could always buy a demo version on eBay for $50. Then root it and put stock ROM on it. That's what I did for my brother

Thanks. I didn't realize about the demo units. They seem to end at about $55 on ebay, and many don't come with chargers. With the sale now at $70, I think I'll take the 90 day warranty and the ability to take back to best buy.

You won't be able to download Kindle Edition apps on the playstore if you put 10.1 on there. Personally, I would jump on this tablet for 70, after putting 10.1 on there it runs pretty smooth, does all I want it to, all around good media device. Not even jealous of my friend's nexus 7 .
This deal is live now for anyone interested. You need to enter the promo code "cnetkindle" when checking out.
I bought a brand new one for $100 bucks about 2 weeks ago on ebay , I havent gone custom rom yet , I have rooted (fff & twrp) , still contemplating losing the amazon stuff , I dont really read much so losing it isnt a big thing , I really like the size , I also have an Acer a500 and that is 10 inch , but the Kindle is actually the "just right size" (after my Galaxy Note) !
$70 is a great price for one of these, even if local storage isn't great. Thanks for the tip on the sale!
Its a sturdy device that my 3 yr old son loves. But we don't travel with it so we don't need local storage. Streaming via Netflix over WiFi is working fine for us.
I didn't care for the stock launcher or OS and so fixed that. But maybe you could just install a different launcher after getting the play store installed. Then you wouldn't lose your amazon perks.
Sold out.....
That's just how good our 1st gen KFs are!!!!

Kindle Fire HD 7" 32GB, 99 Euros on Amazon.de - only till tomorrow night!

And brandspankingnew! In case someone still wants to grab this 32GB Kindle HD 1st generation, here's the Amazon link

Not sure if this also works for people outside Germany. Hope, someone enjoys the information as much as I did.
It'll be my first Kindle to play around with.
Can't go wrong for that price, right? :good:
I ordered one this morning, I think 99 euros is a pretty fair price.
Also ordered a fastboot cable with it since I want to put CM11 on it
Probably not the fastest tablet (even for 99 bucks), but overall a pretty decent device I think.
Damn i was too late...
But i bought 16gb instead for the same price

Amazon recall UK plugs for Fire 7" & Kids Fire 7"

http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/64...le-Fire-electric-shock-risk-children-chargers
Was bit disappointed that I'd read about it here before Amazon got around to emailing about it.
The £12 voucher to get a new charger placated that pretty fast.
Bit of a bump as they've finally sent me the envelope to return the old one.
