Safe mode - Droid Ultra General

I had never heard of this prior to talking with tech support.
Function: disables all third party apps for checking network running issues with said apps.
How: with phone turned on, hold power button until the menu for shut down appears. Then press and hold "Power down" until it boots into the safe mode.
Reboot to leave safe mode.
Not sure if this is new or not as the few years I have been using Android I'd never heard about it.

Thanks man. Pretty useful at times I'm sure.

You said it wrong. You press and hold "power off" until the safe mode prompt appears.

i learned something else - which might be obvious to others, but coming from gnex that was rooted/rommed from day 1 i didn't realize:
hold the power button and the phone will reboot.
even though there's no option in the power menu for reboot, only power off and airplane mode
also, here's the official step by step instruction for safemode:

Holding Down the Power Button

I just noticed when holding down the power button there are a few options I've never seen before.
Power Off
Silent Mode
Save to Existing
Airplane Mode
2
I'm curious what the save to existing and "2" options are for.. any ideas?

hum, i have some options but not what you have....
Power Off
Silent mode
Vibration mode
Airplane mode

I'm curious if there's an app I installed that made these options come up... I'm on the fresh Rom if that helps

LOL, it's a rom that you've installed that made those come up, i'm wagering...
i think he got rid of the mobile network in that ROM, which explains the '2'. probably something similar going on with 'save to existing' (something pointing to mismatched address somewhere)
makes sense. thanks for the input
only one way to find out what they do!

[Q] Power button alternative?

Hello what alternatives are there for powering off the device and rebooting the device please.
Take the battery out

Then how is he supposed to turn it back on.
OK sorry maybe I wasn't clear what I want is to an alternative to turning of the device without having to pres the power button please, and also since it appears the play doesn't come with a default app to reboot the device what are you guys using please?
Only rooted phones can reboot. I'm not sure how you would want to turn the phone back on as well. If without using the power button it would be impossible without root.

Is there a way to turn the ouya all the way off with the controller?

Or is the only way to press and hold the button on top of the console.

I was wondering about this myself. I run Nova Launcer. So what I was thinking is if there's a shortcut or maybe a widget I could install to shut it off completely. Haven't checked for those tho..

If you download quickboot from the play store then it gives you the option of making a power off widget. I use that since sometimes I'm too lazy to get up and just want to roll over . Also in the stock launcher there's a power off button but it doesn't shut the ouya all the way off. And then there is editing the layout of the controller itself in I believe system/usr/keylayout/something.kl replace something with the controller or keyboard you wanna change. By the way a .kl file can be opened and edited in any text editing program.

good info gotta try that
I noticed today that when you press the power button on top, the console goes into standby. You need to press and hold for a second then it asks if you want to power down. This is a full power down
HDMI shuts down and even it the screen still has power, that eventually shuts down to.
Let me know it that helps.

The only full power down i found is holding the button on top of the console. The off option the controller gives u seem to only shut off the video out put which can be woken up very easily.

So quickboot is very good. Only thing is , it instantly kills everything. Like physically pulling the plug. Should I be concerned it's not properly 'putting everything away' before shut down? Thoughts?

This doesn't technically turn the OUYA off, it puts it to sleep in a low power mode. While it should be okay, even over long periods of time, it may not be the ideal way to turn off the system all the time.

I had the same issue too, but it can be 'fixed' by changing an option in the menus. If you go into the Manage->System->Advanced menus, then go into Developer options and turn it on via the on/off toggle switch in the top right hand corner, then go down to the 'Stay awake' option and uncheck it. It should shutdown completely now.
But its still to easy to wake up only sure way I found is to hold the button on top of the ouya.

My understanding is that this disables the hdmi wake-up issue, but still allows the controller to wake it up. I was using Android Tuner to shut down the OUYA, but never actually checked to see if it was in some type of sleep mode. I'm fairly certain it was completely off. I haven't fixed su since the last OTA, because I have been content with my setup. Next OTA I'll probably do a full data wipe and try some of the fun stuff that has been created recently.

After doing that configuration change, I found it doesn't wake up unless I activate the controller and turn it on. Before, it would start up again on it's own and just sit at the prompt even after I told it to shutdown.

Yes, that make sense, that's the behaviour I see. I'm guessing it wakes up the Ouya even though I shut it down because I leave my monitor/tv on and it goes into sleep mode automatically. If I turned off my monitor/tv, it probably wouldn't do that anymore.
I have a HDMI splitter with a blue light to show what channel is being used even with this new change the light show active it only goes of when the ouya is powered down from the top button.

Okay, this is plane and simple all, there are TWO WAYS to turn off the OUYA COMPLETELY! This DISABLES the ability to turn on the console by the controller:
FIRST is the built in way of holding down the button till the dialog comes up then clicking it off.
SECOND is to sideload an app that does that with a button press. Apparently some of these DO NOT work and I'm not sure which ones do, BUT if you can turn it on with the controller it is NOT all the way off.
ALL other ways will NOT completely turn it off!
IF you can turn it on by the controller it is ONLY ON STANDBY/SLEEP

I'm not sure what all the shouting is about. I think the last few posts were clear about whether or not OUYA was asleep or off. I may setup su tonight if I time. I have had an unlucky streak of OTAs releasing within a few days of every time I setup su. Only a big deal because of the plug being a pain to access in the cabinet. Wireless adb has caused a few people headaches I'd rather avoid. If I do, I'll verify what the shutdown command does in some root apps.

One factory reset may help:
Make a SD Internal Memory Backup
From your home screen press the apps icon in the lower right corner.
Find and press the settings icon.
In the upper end of the screen press the accounts tab.
In the bottom of the next screen press the Backup and reset button.
Press the factory data reset.
Read the info on your cell phone screen and hit Reset device.

Marshmallow "Hibernate" Mode

Is there any possibility of having a "Hibernate" mode in Android Marshmallow, or is this already implemented in any roms? Like, it saves the current state to memory before it powers down so that when you turn it back on again, it just resumes that state in a few seconds instead of taking a few minutes to boot up from scratch?
No. Sorry This doesn't exist and nothing like it
That's what doze is trying to do, it essentially hibernates your phone while on.
But to completely power off the device then power back up quicker than normal like your TV, does not exist at all anywhere

I know at least HTC phones used a hibernation mode, they called it quick boot or fast boot though. Not sure if they still have it on current gen devices.

Yeah, I honestly hated this feature.
When holding the power button, you only have a "power off" button if you didn't have APM installed. If you were trying to fix an issue via rebooting, you had to do a hard shutdown/restart.

I always turned it off because it meant you couldn't use fastboot.
