Motorola is pleased to provide the open source software used in the Ultra-Family devi - Droid Ultra General

I haven't seen this posted anywhere else yet. Looks like this is the source for the Droid Ultra/Maxx line.
Hopefully using this and the AOSP 4.3, we can get a 4.3 ROM brewed.

Sorry for the noob questions but how does this effect the bootloader? Will it completely unlock the device for recovery/kernels/ROMs? TIA.

This won't effect the bootloader but could be used for kernels and ROMs on the developer editions where the bootloader is unlocked.

Does that mean there's no hope still for locked devices? I got my Maxx and am now questioning if I should return it for a device that can be unlocked. I really love everything else about this phone though.

From what I have read around the forums, if you are looking for unlocked then this phone line isn't the way to go.

is this phone is locked to verizon only? how about the gsm? it's locked too?

The phone can be used globaly. That includes GSM networks.

Out of curiosity, is there any development going on with the Droid Maxx developer edition right now? I realize that some of the Moto X stuff works OK, but until someone figures out how to get the capacitive buttons working we're not going to see any ROMs. I'm willing to shell out the extra money for the Maxx Developer Edition if it meant I wouldn't be forced to wait for Verizon to approve firmware updates, but right now it's not looking promising that anyone is going to bother with Droid Maxx DE ROMs. Unless, of course, someone figures out how to unlock the bootloader on the non-developer version.

I haven't seen any activity in the known channels but then again it may be too early to expect anything.
On another note, it would be nice if you could port the Google Edition ROM over to the non Google Edition phones, without having to unlock the bootloader, maybe?

Yeah, I'm surprised at the complete lack of development on this phone. I realize that developer edition devices won't have communities nearly as large as other devices, but I expected at least SOME basic AOSP ROM's.

Wouldnt this being a offical source thats made for our phones atleast allow us to put 4.3 into our phones? Id guess it runs the stock kernel which is signed.

Yeah, I particularly expected some basic ROMs too, since the Maxx will essentially run Moto X ROMs (apparently someone just needs to figure out how to get those ROMs to use the Maxx's capacative buttons). But, there's not a ton going on with the Moto X, either. I'm guessing that's mostly because the Moto X is already mostly a stock ROM. You could build your own AOSP ROM, I suppose, but then you'd lose some of the major features of the Moto X and Droid lines. They're working on CM 10.2, though.

I'd be happy with an AOSP ROM with touchless controls and active notifications

I have to say since SS came out and we have exposed as well as modules like gravity box etc I don't see a huge need for ROMs. This phones is almost stock android as it is. I would be happy with a deodexed system so it would be easy to install inverted apps and such. I think that is all this phone needs. Other than a ROM that looks or acts completely different from stock what would be the benefit. Without an unlocked boot loader I have always noticed kexec Roms to run glitchy. I don't want a glichy phone when I can do what most Roms do using exposed etc. I think the time would be better spent on creating themes that could be flashed to the stock system. This is just my opinion based on using the maxx for the last 2months.

I agree..seems as thow, if I had this stock ROM with a gray gapps to match system colors, maybe even a transparent status bar option, I'd be tickled..I do like some of the Apps. that come with this ROM, games I'm not into, and the "Amazon" stuff, nor the NFL, Ingress I would delete, BUT..The Droid Zap, Touch less Controls, NFC and others I'd like to keep..I do enjoy this device and for the most part, like the stock ROM..
Oh..and be able to turn GPS Off and On without having to give permission ever time ( check or uncheck the box)..

I'm perfectly happy with stock MotoX/Droid ROMs too, particularly since they are so close to stock Android. But, I don't want to have to wait for Verizon to approve firmware updates. I got a Galaxy Nexus hoping to avoid some of the headaches associated with flashing ROMs, That didn't exactly turn out as expected (though probably how I should have expected it).

Droid X or dinc??

My wife's og Droid took a poop so I bought an Incredible which I'll have in a day or 2. I love my X but am thinking about swapping her to have something new (to me) to play with until I upgrade this summer. Has anyone here had both and prefer one over the other? Decisions decisions....
Droid X all the way. Moto is the way to go, I've expierienced nothing but problems with HTC (all models), not to mention horrible battery life.
I just came from the Dinc a month ago to the X. I have always used HTC devices from the old windows op to their first android to the DInc. I also (as in the post above me) have had issues with the HTC, but, I am brand loyal. I like the development side of HTC over Motorola. THere are MANY more ROMS and custom things available for the HTC devices. That is the one thing I miss. With the Dinc..there are Incredible 2 and S roms available that give you the newer SenseUI. IT IS AMAZING!! along with HTC HUB to download more themes and skins..along with sound sets! It really is amazing, the level of custom things that can be done with HTC devices.
There was talk with HTC and Verizon to be more locked down, however, HTC has agreed to not back root access more difficult..a day after the Thunderbolt was released..it was hacked.
The only reason I went with the Droid X was because of the 29.99 price. I am going back to HTC.
With the Droid X (it appears) everytime you want to go back to stock you have to SBF (which is not a big issue), however, to do that you need access to a computer. THAT IS NOT THE CASE with the Dinc. I have been at work and switched ROMS 5 or 6 times..the back-ups are stored and can easily be re-loaded on the go. The functionality is FAR better than the Motorola in that aspect.
If you are the type to "tinker" constantly with the ROMS and phone, go with HTC, if you are ok with having to have a computer handy to switch out from custom to stock and back..stick with Motorola.
My opinions.
If the HTC SenseUI is not what your looking for..there ARE MANY ROMS that use vanilla and 2.3 operating systems. There are also MIUI ROMS if you want the complete look of the iphone and functionality of android systems.
there really is NO LIMIT to the customization of HTC.
Google "the incredible list"...it is just a brief run down of the custom ROMS and tweaks..about 40 or so..and it is not updated often.
CM7 is my personal favorite ROM for the DInc...ALOT of custom features..
Now technically stuff vs opinion:
I believe the X has more internal storage. Both phones are capable of holding and supporting 32gb memory cards though. Screen size is another difference. The X is 4.3 and the Dinc is 3.7. (I download alot of movies and store them on my SD card so the 4.3 on the X is better). Both have 8mp cameras. The Dinc is a 720p output and does NOT have an HDMI output like the X. However, there are many ROMS that include "TVOut" for the Dinc. Most of the newer ROMS (I could be mistaken, not sure these have been fixed yet) are not capable of running the 720p video, now..ALOT of people were working on getting that fixed.
With the fact the bootoader is unlocked on the Dinc, you can run many different style ROMS that give you the same look and feel of the X. again, the technical differences are still there.
It really comes down to: do you want the true full ability to customize?
EDIT:: Regarding battery life mentioned in the above post. I easily went 24-36 hours with normal use and no need for a charge. Use SETCPU and custom setting to scale cpu by time, battery levels, and screen off and you are good to go.
Well, as much as the X is a better phone... The Incredible, from what I understand, is much easier to modify. Pretty sure the bootloader is unlocked, aswell.

[Q] Likelyhood of development on Razr M?

Greetings, programs! Well my question is not likely something anyone could have a definitive answer for - but I welcome any opinions or ideas. I don't want phone that is locked up against tinkering, but the current "price" of this phone is so tempting. Just about everything I've read tells me I'd really love this phone - the only thing holding me up is my expectation that there will be little to no development done with this phone.
I see that the bootloader seems to have been successfully unlocked? Now that this is the case I wonder if it's likely to be something anyone puts work into as far as developing ROMS/kernels. I'm not expecting Nexus-level activity, but even the hope of something might help me make up my mind (or I may just get a GNex). Thanks,

Ok, I see. My experience with Moto phones are limited, but do I have it right that using the bootstrap method you can flash custom ROMS, but custom kernels are a no go? Still waiting till I make a decision, but every bit of info helps.
Coorect Bootstrap allow you to load that Beta CM10.
(There isn't much support on that yet)
And no custom kernels unless you have the Dev edition
There are AU Edition, US Edition, Dev Edition, And the i (Intel), there are plans for a EU Edition which will be GSM only
Either get it and hand in tight, or look for a DEV

Not sure how far development is on Safestrap for the M, but it will allow custom kernels on locked devices using kexec. The version for the Droid 3 (which has a locked bootloader) allows a 3.x kernel to be run instead of the factory 2.6.x kernel in order for better ICS and newer compatibility. Unless Motorola has patched this kexec bypass then it should be possible to implement on the M.
Thanks guys for this thread. I was possibly looking at this phone, but I don't want to end up with the same situation we had with the bionic. I think I'll skip it until Moto wises up and unlocks the bootloaders.
If you really want some development here, look at the donate thread for getting nytro a razr m so he can develop for the retail version. In terms of safestrap, you could potentially get modify a custom rom. It just takes one rom to iron out the major bugs and people can start deriving from it.
i dont think moto will ever get smart with bootloaders, which is sad because they make quality phones, with unlocked bootloaders i dont think id ever buy another brand. but regardless, we have stable safe strap, just isnt a big flagship device, its not a new phone and with all the new better phones that are cake to unlock, this phone is just looked over and left in the dust, aside from a few very good devs we have working to give us some stuff to play with, we wont see much.

Ok, this is aimed at anyone. KitKat source code has been released. I've got an Atrix 4G and the Droid X. Word over on A4G from an article online says that this will help with updates, low mem devices and stuff of that nature. Will the release of KK source code help with advancing DX development? I'll post what I read over here in a sec.
Edit. Post from A4G
Many people are excited about the upcoming Android Kit Kat update, but according to a recent leak, this new version may actually be a major step forward both in terms of usability and capabilities for Google’s OS.
Amir Efrati, who has broken Google and Android news before, has apparently taken a look at some official inside documents concerning Android 4.4 KitKat. According to him this might be a radical update to Google’s platform not just an iterative one.
Among the many new features and improvements that it’s supposed to bring, KitKat will supposedly finally deal with the fragmentation issue that has plagued the Android ecosystem ever since the OS first launched. This will come both in terms of support for the update and in integrated solutions that unify separate approaches from different OEMs. For example instead of Samsung, HTC, Moto and Sony each offering their own way to interact with an IR blaster, KitKat now brings an integrated solution that works on all handsets.
According to Efrati, KitKat has also been engineered to work on older and lower-end devices in a bid to bring them up to speed with newer and more powerful handsets. Memory management has also been improved, now allowing much more fluidity and responsiveness even in devices with only 512 MB RAM.
Speaking of those, KitKat also seems to be focused around new lower-end devices with many improvements designed to make Google and its OEMs more competitive in this field. After all, while the high-end markets seem saturated, developing markets are a huge and valuable battlefield for OEMs looking to sell more devices.
Other improvements are focused around Bluetooth and the addition of new sensors: geomagnetic rotation vector, step detection and step counters. These are definitely geared towards wearables, whether they’re Google Glass or upcoming smartwatches from OEMs or even completely new products that haven’t been announced yet. Whatever the case, Android is definitely gearing towards a wearable computing future.
Finally developers will supposedly be able to create applications that use “full-screen mode” which completely hides the navigation bar and lets the app shine from edge to edge. And alongside all these changes there may be some significant battery gains thanks to improvements in the KitKat update which should make many users quite happy.
Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long until Google decides to unveil KitKat to the world, and here’s hoping this info is accurate and the update does end up being a major one.

I've run into that as well. I had to clear data to get it back. You might try clearing SystemUI data first and then rebooting. Just know that all your system settings will be wiped.
Notifications turning invisible happened to me as well in LiquidICS 2.0. It can be fixed as follows:
Go to Settings+Interface+Status bar+General. Scroll to Notification Color at the bottom. Change the color to something close to white. Your notifications should come back.

Well, there are a few AOSP ROMs in "the oven" as you can see if you go to the Unified ROM section, but none of them are ready for prime time. I had a Developer Edition S4 and tried every AOSP ROM available and none of them ever worked as smooth and error free as the TW ROMs that were available. It seemed as if every AOSP ROM had something that didn't work, something that didn't work quite right or was extremely laggy. I eventually gave up on AOSP for the S4 and went back to a good TW ROM. I'm sure there is an explanation for what I experienced with AOSP but I look at it like this: The Samsung hardware and firmware were engineered and designed to work together. If you change one or the other something is not going to work at all, or not work as well as it should. So, I hold little hope of an AOSP ROM for the S5 or S5 Developer Edition (which I have) appearing that I would want for my daily driver. I hope I am wrong..;.but I'm not holding my breath.

Bootloader Unlocking Advantages?

I have never unlocked a device bootloader before so I am trying to get a little more knowledgeable on the topic. For this device, other than allowing it to be rooted, what advantages are there to unlocking the bootloader? Does it make the device harder to brick? Obviously it allows the installation of custom ROMS. For those that want to keep it stock, but want to root, is there any advantages to them having an unlocked bootloader? Thanks in advance for any advice.
For myself, its a no brainer. I use the xposed framework for minor tweaks and mods on the stock build. And just as well, I use titanium backup to remove unwanted system apps that come pre installed, and roll back app updates that I don't see fit. Per ex. If an app updates and has ads or removes features, I usually roll it back. Normally I flash a custom ROM and kernel, but this phone performs so well stock, it only needed minor tweaking in my opinion. Just my .02, but I like to be in control of a device I spend my hard earned money on.
If certain basic options were included in stock, I wouldn't even root, as I really don't need it. Its the simple customization and tweaks that make it all worthwhile.

In my opinion, an unlocked bootloader is awesome. For the fact that in the off chance that something gets corrupted, you can go into fastboot and flash whatever to try and fix it.
And rooting, as well. Because of all the advantages rooting offers.

I totally agree with all of that. Before my Moto X arrived I was running a Galaxy S4 rooted with Hyperdrive ROM. I refused to take the Lollipop update because it would kill root and it was not again attainable, except for King Root. King Root is out of China and I'm not even gonna go there as to why I wouldn't use that. The S4 I had didn't have a bootloader that was unlockable so it was Safestrap Recovery with a root exploit that had me gaining control. It's ridiculous to me that we don't have control of our devices anyway. Verizon is terrible, that's why I bought this phone as it is unlockable and rootable on Lollipop, and it's carrier unlocked. So if Verizon ticks me off too much I can jump ship.
Another thing, if Moto voids your warranty due to bootloader unlock, are most folks going with Square Trade for protection purposes? I know Moto says they will still honor your claim if it's a hardware issue not related to software, but should I trust them?
You can always return the device to stock prior to sending it in. Did that with my nexus 6 for the battery issue. Just play it right, you can always say you were going to but never followed through with it. The bootloader screen tells all. Moto isn't Samsung with the flash counter.
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
On my previous devices (mostly nexus's) it's a no-brainer, it allows me to use custom ROMs. But on the MXPE, I like the stock ROM and moto features. But I still unlocked in order to get rid of ads, that alone is worth it for me.
The way I see it, a phone is a pocket sized computer. Do you want to be a user or an admin? As a user, you can only do what the manufacturer has loaded on the phone and what they allow you to update. As an admin, you can install Windows 10 or roll it back to Windows 7 if you want. Want to try Linux? Go install it. The sky is the limit if you're the admin. That's sorta how it is to have an unlocked bootloader on a phone. If you're not comfortable changing anything with your phone or restoring it if something goes wrong, leave the bootloader locked.

Were you able to unlock bootloader without going thru Motorola's process to get the unlock key? If not, they've recorded your serial number as unlocked.
All of the above are excellent points, so I won't rehash them, but the first thing that drives me to unlock and root with every phone and tablet I get, is Ads. Nothing bugs me more than popup ads. Unlock- Root -Adaway!
Also, there is a real sick visceral thrill to doing something stupid, bricking your phone and then suppressing panic to find a fix. When that unit boots back up ready to go - it's not better than sex, but it's pretty good.

Couldn't take it any longer, it's unlocked, TWRP'ed, and rooted. I feel so much better now! I'm once again in control and have all my apps with data right where they should be.

I applaud Moto for allowing this. Had a Sammy Note 3 and had to jump through so many hoops just to get a rom on the thing, sideloading bs and all that and then can't go over a certain update or root is lost, etc. Glad I bought this MXPE and about two days after purchase, rooted and unlocked the BL. Felt great to be back in control. Now whatever comes down the pike I can put on, take off without a hesitation. Great phone....

And you can flash forward as well. There's some info and files in the General section for a fully working MM rom. I'm holding off until someone accomplishes a modified kernel, which will allow it to be rooted.
But yea, I was a die hard Sammy guy up until the S5. It got harder and harder to root and I finally bought a Dev Edition Verizon S5. I wasn't going to fork out $6-800 on a Dev Note 4. And with the S6/N5 and up they took away removable batteries (not a deal breaker) and sd cards, which was the final stray. No removable battery, no sd card, no unlocked bootloader (for Verizon at least) = no Sammy!

Yup, I was a Samsung guy too, until the changes you mentioned. I stuck with my S4 and even that would've lost root if I updated to Lollipop. So I kept rolling with KitKat until I bought the Moto X Pure. Now I'm back to Moto and hoping the next iteration of this device comes with an AMOLED display.

I couldn't be loyal that long lol. I've had almost every phone Verizon offers. The only ones I've been able to use for longer than a month or so are the S5, M8, G3, M9, G4, and now the MXP. I like the Nexus line but I have a 128 gb sd card so even 64gb of internal isn't nearly enough for me to use comfortably.
