[Q] HELP!!!! QUICK!!! Cant Reinstall Factory ROM!!! - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys
Just joined the forums yesterday. I was enjoying tinkering with my S4, I rooted it and had some fun with it, installing cool apps and such like.
I downloaded titanium back up, and proceeded to remove (what I thought was) bloatware..... (yes...schoolboy error, I know) I didn't remove any crucial system files though, I aint that gung-ho. But what I did do, was remove Flip-Fonts (I didn't know that the little "f-f logo in the circle" was flipfonts.
Anyway, this was still ok. I downloaded a font app from the play store, and installed a new font. I deliberately chose a font that was annoying to look at, and barely legible, simply so I could instantly see that the install had worked. So I rebooted my S4, and when it booted up, I noticed immediately that it had worked. Thus I knew the install proocess was working, and then I chose the font I wanted to install. BRILLIANT!!!
Then I noticed the issue. My system fonts were ok, however, when I was surfing the web, it was still using the annoying, barley legible font I initially installed as a tester. Gmail was using it, yahoo, chrome. I tried to uninstall and change the font. I could change it, but again, the fonts in gmsail etc were the annoying one that I didn't want. I could see no way to change this. So I did a factory restore this morning, through the normal channels (setting/accounts/back-up and reset) thinking this would reset.
When I booted the phone back up, when I was guided through the initial phone set up tutorial (time, accounts, device name etc ect) I noticed that the system font was set as the annoying one I don't want. So I downloaded iFont, and changed it. Again, it changed the font to the one I wanted, but again, when I went online it was still that (by this time) INCREDIBLY ANNOYING FONT!!!
So I went in to SuperSU and chose to unroot the device. I then went through the root process I initially used I re-rooted using this method. Again, when I booted up, the initial set-up wizard that guides you through had that IRRITATING, PESKY, SUICIDAL FONT!!!
So my good android friends, I require your assistance. How do I get round this pesky issue? I was thinking I would have to roll back to the factory ROM? Or is there some simple setting I am missing This is really really getting to me now. I have been tikering with the fone, not too in depth may I add, just installnig root apps and such. I was willing to venture in to the custom ROM's avenue sometime soon.....although after this little episode, I may think twice.
I do not have a nandroid back up. I have been advised on another forum to reinstall the factory ROM. However, I know there are different methods for different versions. So below is the info from my device. Whats the best plan of action for me. I still want to root my phone again, I just want shot of this annoying font.
In About Device:
Model Number: GT I9505
Android Version: 4.2.2
Baseband Version: I9505XXUDMH8
kernel Version: 3.4.0-1220396 Then below it says se.infra @0210-03 1
(or something like that. I can hardly read it because of that annoying font)
Build Number: JDQ39.19505XXUDMH8
And i'm in the UK. my carrier/service provider is O2
Please Help!!!!!!! :crying:

Have you tried looking for your firmware here and restoring via odin?

As the other guy suggested, but instead of using that link, try http://www.samfirmware.com type in GT-I9505 into the device search bar and find United Kingdom (o2).
Flash it using Odin and you should be all good! I'd also recommend you take care when messing about with your phone, especially with system files. I would also recommend you flash a custom recovery such as TWRP and make backups of your device. It's saved me a load of times already!

Just wipe, flash new rom (stock rom or any rom you want). As long as you don't do anything crazy you can always use download mode to flash roms.

[Q] Did I f* up my Play?

Hey guys. I hate making my first post a really noobie question but here it goes.
I just updated my rooted Xperia Play to 2.3.3 and it erased and/or re-wrote all of my system apps. I stupidly converted some of my downloaded apps into system apps using Titanium (because system apps turn red on the list. It helped me quickly figure out what was external and what was internal. Stupid, yes, and more trouble then it was actually worth.) so those apps were lost. Didn't matter, I had backups but I lost my root so I couldn't access them.
Forgetting what I used to root my phone originally I decided to use z4root after reading about it somewhere. The site I got it from is usually trust worthy but when I downloaded the file my OfficeScan (its a school bought computer) warned me of a potential virus threat. I wrote it off as just the pop-up ad and un-zipped and transferred the file to my phone. I still am not sure if it was a virus or not... Running z4root it got up to "acquiring shell root..." or something like that before kicking me back to the home screen with no change. I, again, stupidly, re-ran it several times without rebooting between each attempt. Giving up I then realized to reboot. Strangely rebooting was A LOT faster then it was usually is and I don't know if that was z4 or 2.3.3.
Anyway I remembered that I used Gingerbreak last time and re-installed that. I made several attempts with that with no change either. Too many to count, but at least more than 8. Several attempts I got a call or a text and, checking them, ended the process. 2 attempts I left running for about half an hour (I know that the instructions say it will never take more then 10 minutes) and some I ended with a battery pull after more then 10mins(as per instruction).
So I guess I have several questions:
1. How bad did I f* up, If I did so?
2. Any suggestions on how to re-root/fix it?
3. Will switching to an empty SD card, successfully rooting it, and switching back to the full card still keep the root?
4. Does an in phone factory reset work the same as flashing the same rom or will I need to actually flash that new rom?
5. If I do need to flash, where can I find a regular Play rom? Or do you have suggestions about a better rom?
6. Is the fast reboot the work of the half done, possibly a virus, z4root process or just the 2.3.3 update?
7.Lastly Was this tl and you ;dr?
Normally, I wouldn't care if there was no fix; My phone boots much faster, I didn't lose all my apps and only some apps launch a little slower then before. But I made tons of progress on Zenonia 2 and I want my back ups for that... lol.
Any help appreciated. Also thanks for putting up with a noob that's writing way to formally
1. Messing with the system apps, and not backing them up probably caused you to not have an OTA update. I'm guessing you flashed it? Not restoring anything and not doing an OTA was mistake number one. Trying to use z4root was mistake number 2.
2. Get the generic UK firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097591
-Flash that with Bin4ry and Androxhyde's flashtool
-Put in your carrier's APN settings, configure your google account, wifi etc. etc.
-Get Gingerbreak 1.2, run it(I used Astro to open the apk, and you need uunknown sources enabled).
Gingerbreak only worked for me when I formatted an SD card right before running it. I used a spare that was lying around, not the usual one with all my data, and I suggest you do the same if you kept your titanium backups. Hopefully you'll get rooted after about 3-5 minutes. Do not mess with any apps/bloatware after you have the root.
-After you have root, go into the settings menu and start an OTA update.
You should now have 2.3.3 WITH root.
-Once the phone is updated, install Titanium Backup and start backing up your old apps from before you messed up the phone and lost root.
-At this point feel free to remove the bloatware, but make sure you back it up in titanium for later.
3. Switching SD cards won't affect root at all.
4. A factory reset will reset whatever ROM was installed last. In other words, you can't revert back to 2.3.2 with a reset, it'll just reset 2.3.3 - It's really just for wiping data and settings.
5.The regular play ROM is the UK generic I posted above. The only "better" roms are customs that you need an unlocked bootloader to install. Currently they're still buggy and in development and not worth getting unless you like incomplete ROMs with bugs, and wanna lose the ability to update normally. Both OTA updates and the Sony Ericsson Update Service will brick your phone once the bootloader's unlocked.
6. My phone was booting a bit faster after updating to 2.3.3, and became even faster after removing some bloatware.
-Root doesn't speed up the boot process.
-I highly doubt an Android phone would have a virus that makes it boot faster, it's probably just from the update.
7. No, it wasn't. No, I didn't.
Thanks for the (semi-)quick response. Been browsing around the web with this tab open, constantly refreshing like a creep. I'll try your advice soon but its like 3am, just wanted to say thanks and love your Stocking pic.
Btw is there a difference between A US, UK or CAN rom or do those even exist?
The only real differences are carrier specific apps, and some versions have different games installed.

Seems like I was to late to flash and the link to the rom you gave me may have been updated to 2.3.3 as well. I was looking for a Canada/Rodgers rom anyway but the forum search isn't turning up anything and google seems to hate me...
Help anyone?
The link was for 2.3.2 in the generic.
The only rogers rom available is for 2.3.3 so you won't be getting root without an unlocked bootloader with that one.
Just follow the directions and it should be fine.
The rogers apps are available in the android market separately.

Help installing ArmSense_XE_0.6.130 ROM

Noob alert. First post, first rom.
Thought it about time I had a go at hacking my Hero and thought I’d better start with a rom that seemed stable. I chose the ArmSense_XE_0.6.130 Android2.3.5+sense3.5 on this forum.
Root and install of the custom recovery was painless.
Flashed this rom and all seemed well. The first thing I thought I’d try was maps, as I want to check gps functionality, but no maps app to be found. I then remember reading in this forum that custom roms rarely contain the Google apps. I found, downloaded and flashed the 20110828 version of gapps (in the same way as I flashed the initial rom, but without doing a wipe first, I hope this is right).
Still no maps. I know they can be downloaded from the market (play), but the market app seems to fail. When I select it the screen goes white for a few seconds and then returns without displaying any error. Not wanting to give up I visited play via the browser, but this would not let me download directly to the phone either, as it reported that I must use the phone app to visit the site first.
I’ve obviously visited the market many times before on this phone, and am sure I set my Google account up properly during the setup. (though googlemail has changed to gmail during the time between I originally setup the phone and now).
The upshot of all this is that I have these questions:
Generally have I done the right things?
Should I have the maps and come to that gmail, which I now notice is also missing?
Any ideas on the problem with the market app?
And lastly, I was sort of expecting the same clock as shown on the op of the ArmSense_XE development thread be the default, but this is not the case. I quite like it. What is it and where does it come from?
Restored to my original stock 2.1 configuration for now.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
The ROM you choose is far from being stable, that's why it's marked with the version ArmSense_XE_0.6.130.
Please check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343988
I'm using the SHPONGLE v3.5 and I'm quite satisfied.
M
Thank you for the advice. Downloading it now.
I have the right gapps package I guess and will need to add it to this rom too?
Cheers
Hi,
The ROM already have gapps light, meaning that you can register your account and access Google Play.
Then you can download the apps you need like Maps, Youtube, Gmail, whatsoever...
M
Got it working now.
Apart from a little niggle with the lock screen (probably me being unfamiliar) it all seems very fast and smooth.
Thank you for your advice.
SHPONGLE v3.5 is by far the fastest 2.3.7 on Hero in my (very fresh) experience.

How do I format?

Well, i'm having a huge issue going on the past few days. I wish to start a new account on a game called Knights & Dragons and the developers are of no help at all [it's a GREE game]. Somehow the app keeps loading up my old account and I cant get it to stop. I've tried the following:
Factory reset
Flashing new ROMs and GApps [4.3 and 4.4 ROMs]
Change ID in Titanium Backup
Spoof all info with XPrivacy
Made a new google account completely after all of the above
Formatted and erased completely my SD card through CWM.
Used PDroid to block/spoof info.
Nothing seems working. When I open the app it'll show the "complete tutorial and get so and so" above the loading bar which is fine and dandy but then it goes to update the game and boom. Old account loaded even with the Google Play ID and all Phone infor not only changed but being randomized as well.
On my Note 10.1 all I had to do was flash a new ROM and GApps and it made a new account without me even intending to do it.
I'm so lost so my last ditch resort here is to completely wipe EVERYTHING possible and then get my ROM back up and running, reroot and all that jazz. My question is how do I go about doing so without completely bricking my device? I need to get this new fresh start going here and I don't care if I lose everything as I backed up all stuff already to my laptop.
Any ideas?

Soft Brick Perhaps Due to Custom Font Change via ROOT on S4 I337

Hello all!
I am very very... very new to rooting so please bear with me. So basically I used KingRoot for an easy rooting process and then went and used an app that gets rid of KingRoot in favor of Super SU (App was called Super SU Me I think, on Play Store).
So one of the first things I did was download the Jrummy font changing app. I found a font I liked and I was prompted to make a backup of my current fonts and to have a nandroid backup as well in case. So I thought, being the noob that I was and still am that I wouldn't need to do such a thing so I just backed up my fonts thinking "good enough". I then reboot my S4 and it gets stuck on the AT&T logo (so a soft brick right?). So, I freak out cause I'm a noob and I din't expect a font change to soft brick my S4. Luckily before rooting I backed up photos and music but anyways I ended up booting into recovery mode and wiping data and the partition cache.
This ended up working (can't remember if it was multiple tries) and I got back to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop but was greeted with an "Unfortunately, Samsung Keyboard has stopped working." I thought this must be because of the font change so I maneuver to settings (with the error for the keyboard popping up every time I close it by tapping "OK") and change the default keyboard to Swype and that stopped the error from popping up. I then go to change the font and it says "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped working." or something like that and kicks me out of settings. So somewhere down the line I restart my phone and the process keeps repeating so I have to access my phone by factory resetting it in recovery mode and clearing the partition cache or whatever and then I can use android but the keyboard error keeps popping up every time.
I guess you could say I'm freaking out and I definitely guess you can say I'm a total noob at this.
BTW: I have no recoveries or anything so basically stuck with what I have. Also I tried a program called "_Hovatek__Auto_Font_Unbricker_V1.0 " and that didn't work even when I got the green text running in the program or whatever.
Please help! This is really bad I know!

Can you do that with android 5.0.1? I don't know if I can downgrade in order to restore to stock.

The last full firmware release for AT&T S4 was NB1. After that, there is only incremental updates (OTA) to lollipop. There is no full firmware release for android 5.0.1. As such if we screwed something up, we all have to go back to NB1 and start from there.
So please follow the guide mentioned in the previous post.
Wow! I can't believe that solved it! I had tried other solutions that I saw using Odin (kind of a mix mash of all the stuff I read) but that guide takes the cake! Seriously the best solution, thank you for the responses!

Possibly have two different firmwares running?

I have a SM-G550FY, at least that is what my phone says. Now when I got the phone it was a metropcs phone and I tired rooting it which worked. Then I tried to flash the Reborn ON5 rom and then I had no sound. After this I tried flashing a stock rom but I believe it was for the T-Mobile variant. NOW it wont open ANYTHING. It boots and the initial android setup shows up but after I cant even open the settings in my phone. I used recovery to reinstall the reborn rom since no sound is better then no apps. I believe I flashed imgs for different model number but now I am not sure what to do. I just want to go back to the stock rom so I can have my sound back. Any help would be appreciated.
To fix the no apps/black screen what I did was pull down the notification menu from the top of the screen, then by long pressing the buttons I was eventually able to get into a settings menu where I could get to the play store. I started by downloading a bunch of the basic apps that were missing...contacts, messages, etc. then I installed "Google Now Launcher" and that fixed all the things. The bad metro wallpaper showed up and there were the apps that I thought were missing. I hope this helps...or at least gives you some hope that everything isnt lost.
Edit...if you can get to the play store...try the google now launcher first. Honestly any launcher might work.
