LG G2 android system usage? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed that even when I usey phone a lot of the day with screen on that my G2 is the first phone that the android system always uses more battery than the screen and I do not understand that. Every other phone I have had in the past(and it has been a lot because I'm a Verizon rep) my display takes much more battery. I notice that there is a ton of LG's crap running under android system, is that why I'm not seeing the battery life I would expect out of a 3000mah phone. I'm getting about 17-18hrs out of it. Which is good. But it's not Great! Any insight would be cool.

Something that falls under the Android System category can trigger and go rogue, causing idle drain to be way higher than it should be. Its happened to me 3 times in two weeks, and a reboot cleared it up each time. I'm not certain as to the culprit as it wasn't obvious in BBS.

Restarts, root, reflash, nothing has helped so far. I've gone as far as disabling everything I can that is lg and the system still uses more.

Android system on mine always on top
But, get easily 6hours screen time? how much screen time you got?
Android system always top i think because this device have GRAM
Make screen usage is very little, thats why.
If this device doesn't have GRAM maybe screen always on top but with worst battery life

No that is not why, the "GRAM" as you call it is simply a tiny amount of memory that is dedicated to storing a screenshot on what is on the screen and will shut down the GPU if a static image is on screen for more than 10 or 15 seconds. It has nothing to do with the screen drawing power.
Android System covers a ton of things on the phone, you need a better app that looks into individual processes to see which part is actually causing the excessive drain.

Hmm, im not sure but before own G2 i own G Pro.
Screen usage on G Pro always on top, android system is nowhere near. But battery life G2 is much better even android system always on top.

If you go to the Task Manager app hit menu then settings and go to stop services you can check apps to keep them from running in the background, awesome feature.
Edit:
Ever since I stopped the facebook app, the stock email app, google play music, music, and youtube my battery is a lot better, was really good to begin with, but with these stopped, even better.

Disable wifi

I've been having real battery problems on my G2 as well - I found threads online attributing battery problems to the latest version of Google Play Services which can also raise the system usage. Turning off Wifi Location at the device level fixed the battery drain for me - it sucks to have to turn it off but it's clear that my battery drops like a truck with it on, is totally fine with it off.

Can anyone confim that this is normal? i have an LG g2 with 3000mah and i loose 1% of battery every MINUTE while playing games, so 10 minutes of modern combat 4 or plats vs zombies is around 10 % (strange because the graphics complexity is very different) , 60-70% brightness, sound half way or headphones. Some people are speaking about "5h of screen time easily" while i get 2-3h ... some site even says " When we had kept the WiFi and 3G network on for a whole day, had surfed for around 3 hours, played games for about 1 hour, watched videos for around 1.5 hours and had talked for 2 hours we were able to get back up for 1.5 days. "

Normal, depending what game you play.
MC4 and PVZ is heavy games. If you play simple game like cartoon war you will see the result is different.
Never ever heard smartphone can play MC4 straight in 5 hours

well, mc 4 and pvz are both very different and i would dare saying mc4 is much more demanding in gpu and cpu, but whatever game i play its always the same. And i will surprise you - i found someone on this forum saying he actually played pvs for 5h ...that would be impossibru on my phone.
---------- Post added at 10:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:17 AM ----------
in addition i find it strange, that even though the battery is draining at rate of 10% per 10 minutes in average, after all in battery use menu it says the game has consumed only 2-4% of all with android system and media server on top as usual. Maybe the game isnt that battery draining but something else turns on while playing and eats the battery...

1 30h of screen on time, 30 % left. And i swear i havent been playing for more than 40-50 min...

wrong wrong wrong wrong. it does not matter what output the user has on the screen. what matters is the optimization in the code. MC4 can be super optimized while PVZ can be made in paint and you will have the same battery usage. And 1% while playing games, no matter what game it is, it is OK in terms of usage.

what's your average on time for your screen on a full battery charge?

5.5h it varies but that's an average.

On what brightness?
Only went thru' 3 battery cycles here, after the initial one i got 9h30 screen on time each time, i don't play games either.
8-9 hours for me. little to no gaming
Could you guys past your screen brightness that you normally user also... That has a lot to do with battery life. I , for instance, have my brightness at about 40% at any given time.
My personal best was 10.5 hours of screen time on a 48 hour battery cycle. No gaming, just web surfing, streaming google music occasionally. This was mostly reading comics on comicwrack.
Edit: lowest brightness possible as I read in the dark.

I've gotten 7-9 hours every time on a mix of auto brightness and manual set around 15%.
Anything higher than 25% is uncomfortable for me unless I'm outside or something.
This is primarily web browsing and such. Videos drain a bit faster and games much much faster.
There's plenty of proof in the various posts about battery life.
I would say about 4h. I'm in a really critical position..
Between 6 and 8 hours here depending on what I do with it. Brightness set to lowest setting mostly, Google Now turned off and WiFi set to off during sleep.
I get from 7-9 hours consistently with wifi off when screen is off and watching shows, browsing xda, Internet, pulse, reddit and occasional gaming for about 10-20 minutes. I once got about 10 hours but that was when mainly reading lecture notes and making my own notes via pen and paper. My brightness is about 15-20 or if it's sunny then around 40%.
Certain apps have a tendency to keep your tablet or even phone awake. You could download 'betterbatterystats' which is on xda somewhere for free and judge what is keeping it up by looking at 'partial wakelocks' or if you are rooted, 'alarms' (what awakes your tablet up when it should be sleeping). Typical culprits for me are Google Now and Maps and for some reason, The Economist app. If you turn off Location Reporting, that can help battery alot, but if you need it on, make sure that the apps which need it aren't unnecessarily waking up your tablet.
No way should you be getting any less than 5-6 really, even if using it at max capacity. I watched around 2 films and a couple of episodes of shows for a max on screen time of about 5-6 hours before and probably still had 30% left.

That battery life though...

Just got the tablet a few days ago. Love the speed. Love the pen. Love the stock UI. Love the tablet. But that battery life..... yikes. I wanted to know how everyone's battery life was. I'm on rooted 4.4.2 and it dies so fast. If I'm not using it, it stays on the same percentage for a few hours but if I'm using it, even for light browsing, the battery percentage just drops. While I'm playing Dead Trigger, it takes like 5 minutes of gaming to drop 10%. I'm on maximum performance so I didn't know if that was normal or not. But thats during gaming on max performance so I can't say I didn't expect that. What I didn't expect however, is how fast it drops even with nongaming use at low battery setting. I was taking notes in class earlier today and it dropped a percentage roughly every 1.5 minutes. Is this normal? What are your battery lives like? Does it get better if I roll back to 4.3 or 4.2.2?

Interesting. So rooting it might have something to do with battery draining so fast? I'll have to try to wipe, reflash stock, and test it out. Appreciate the input!
I have not rooted my TN7( 4.4.2 ), I use BSPlayer for videos and music and my battery shows 1% drop after playing MP3s at full volume for 8-10 minutes. That's very impresssive battery life. I use "Balanced" setting from "Settings" app. May be, you are having battery issue because you might have rooted using chinese method and that installs some chinese apps.
MC4 runs without lags on my TN7 with "Balanced" setting and about 3.5 hours of battery life. I will check what happens after changing to "Performance" setting.

I did not experience any "impressive graphics" when playing Shadowgun THD. What was you experience? (RR3 looks very good, mirroring on the surface of cars, shadows) ...

I've rerooted it from scratch and the battery lasts much longer. The only chinese app I had was some input keyboard one that I immediately deleted with clean master so I wasn't worried about it. I unfortunately have not tried shadowgun THD so I can't say what my experience is, but man. RR3 does look AMAZING.
Mines totally stock bar the google home laucher
I think it is pretty awful
1% every 1.5 minutes just surfing and YouTube
When running root w/ stock 4.4.2-2.1 and power saving mode w/ auto backlight, I get around 6-8 hours of use - I don't game though.
Just picked up the evga version, did all the updates to 4.4.2, battery is just draining like crazy, unit is quite warm to the touch constantly. Topped off out of the box, did the updates, was at 92%. Stepped out with friends and took it with me. It was sleeping the majority of the time, took a couple of test pictures to see AOHDR in effect. No wifi connection. 6pm to 9pm when i got home, battery was at 8% installed a couple of apps, in about 15 minutes was at 4% with the critical warning. Went ahead and charged it up all night. Been off the charger about 40 minutes, im at 75%. This can't be right, nothing near what you guys have reported. battery indicator is that screen on is the biggest drain. Im rooted, stock recovery, SD write fix applied. If i have to do a wipe, ill do it, but i've only installed bgee, sketchbook, cal, coursera, and a bunch of updates. No chance of 10 hours web like the reviews state, no chance of 10 hours of even idle running! Im using the balanced power mode, prism on, auto dimming.

Got Evga, after the 4.4.2 the battery started to drain at aprox. 1% per minute even with the screen off, Seems to be a bug of 4.4.2, maybe the latest update shall fix that. Anyway, personally I won't know it for a long time since I bricked mine while trying to go back to 4.3 and escape from battery drain Also, if anyone could do me a favour and backup the system from cwm, I'd be really happy)
Try deleting the "batterystats.bin" file and then switch off, charge, then power on after complete charging.
I think those who are reporting battery problem, all have rooted, thank god I have not rooted till now!! I can play 720p movies from my shared windows folders over wifi with fair signal strength for about 9 hrs. Still while playing Asphalt 8, battery lasts only for 2.5 hours. I have all the default settings, not changed anything. ( Xolo Play Tegra Note )

[Q] What is wrong with the G2 battery?

I've tried everything to make my g2's battery last. I had an iPhone 6+ for a couple days and I could literally play on it for an hour straight and have the battery drop only 10%. If I just leave the screen on, doing little else, my G2 will drop 13-15%. If I keep the screen off, greenify all the major apps, my phone will only drain about 1-2% per hour.
But, as soon as I turn the screen on and start using the phone like a normal person, the battery will drain between 25%+/HR. I try to figure out what's causing the drain... Wake locks, kernel locks, etc, but it's never clear. Having just added greenify to the mix, I still see that the Android os stays awake at least an hour longer than the screen. Is that normal?
I don't get why the iphone6+ can last 2.5x longer with the screen on than the G2. But more importantly, can someone analyze my attached data and tell me how I can get the lost from what I have?
How old is your g2 and how long would a full charge last?
I'd advice you to reflash your current Rom. If the issues persist it might be a bad battery, but that's hard to judge. If you're getting a full day with about 4 hours SOT then that's just about normal.
Phone is approximately 7 months old, but it's a refurb. I think it has more to do with Android wake locks than anything else. For whatever reason, Apple phones manage this behavior much better than droids.
I still don't understand 1) how to fix my problem? 2) why the iphone6+ which has almost the same battery specs and a better screen, can last 2. 5x longer. This has been a problem with androids from the very beginning. They should be able to match the competitor.
Also, according to this article from Phandroid.com, the G2 gets 11+ hours of continuous Web surfing time in their tests. Doesn't this imply 11+ hours of screen on time, not 4?

You have to take into account what game was running was it optimized etc and hardware.
You have a 7month old phone that was already a refurb vs a new phone.
also how th tests are used compared to your settings
The web browsing test is performed using an automated script which reloads a webpage every ten seconds. There are no flash elements on the web pages, so the playing field is even. The brightness of the phones' displays is set to 50% and we use a Wireless N router placed a few meters away to get full connectivity bars.
In our video playback test we measure how long it takes for a device to run its fully charged battery down to 10%, while looping a standard-definition video. We stop at 10% since most devices shut their video players at this point. The display is again set to 50%, and all radios on the device are switched off (Airplane mode)

Btw the new Iphone has vastly different hardware from the G2
For one i will assume you are using max brightness on both phones or at least Auto
The G2 uses a full HD ips panel LCD
The Iphone uses a Full HD LED backlit IPS panel meaning individual leds can turn off and blacks look natural this also saves power.
The G2 Uses a 2.26ghz Quad Core snapdragon 800 (not the 801 which has more power savings)
The Iphone 6+ and the 6 Use a 1.4ghz Dual-Core (2 less cores and 800mhz slower)
Also the games you play matter because apple are locked down every app is basically only set and optimized to work on their devices.
Android apps support a mixture of different hardware devices so the ones you may use are not optimized.
Also to stuff your ruddy gripe the screen isnt Better its the Same resolution you save some battery thats all.
Also your iphone is 1 year newer GG with a vastly less powerful CPU that will use less power also and a new battery.
You dont state what games and you dont state what you are doing to get 25% drain an hour.
Dont complain saying that *this 1 year phone doesnt have XX as good as my new phone that i have had for 3 days QQQ)
Btw GL with that boomerang of yours lul bendgate
Also LED screen technology has been used by samsung for years now
I never said anything about playing games on my phone. I pretty much use it for email, surfing, and Facebook.

I feel your frustration but making that statement, you are telling us you are very premature, at least on the mindset of thinking about Android in general.
Solutions are always there, it's you to decide whether you go for it or not.
Also, based on which factor that you said the i6+ has better screen? The look or the spec?
the G2 set the bar for ALL smart phones when it comes to battery life. there is nothing wrong with it. However, youre comparing a brand new phone with a weaker processor, to an older phone with a stronger processor. Go into settings/about phone/hardware info.... and check the stats there. it will show you how long the phone has been in use, and when the warranty began (production date) this can be very telling. all batteries diminish over time. btw is the iphone 6 screen even full HD?
---------- Post added at 04:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:49 PM ----------
when my g2 was 3 days old, my jaw would drop bc playing on it for an hour straight to get everything set up, it would only drain 2-3 %. that was amazing. now after over a year, i get about 12-15 percent drop per hour with heavy use, including streaming music, texting, and browsing. i think thats still very good.

Galaxy Note 4 Battery Rapid Battery Drain

Hello, I purchased a Korean (I live here atm) Galaxy Note 4 about three weeks ago and have been experiencing extremely rapid battery drain.
Initially, upon unboxing I noticed that I'd get about 2 hours max screentime with 3G browsing usage before the phone would power down. As a result, I brought it to the Samsung store in Seoul last week and they gave me a new battery. However, the new battery appears to have changed little, though I was getting up to three hours screentime maximum afterwards, so that was a marginal improvement.
Yesterday I did a factory wipe and reset the phone, deleted all the unnecessary apps, and reinstalled just the basic extras one at a time to see if that would improve things.
Today I took it off charge and noticed the drain is still noticeable. When browsing websites OFF the charger cable I see the power drop by 1% every 3-4 minutes. Is this normal? I calculate I'd get between 4-5 hours of power at constant browsing at this rate, which would be fine if spread over the day, but the other issue is that even on standby the battery usage is noticeable.
Even following the factory reset I notice that besides from the obvious "Screen" power usage, "Android System" is one of the biggest drains on the battery. Currently it is using between 25-30% of power, and if you look at the sleep log on the battery (See attached) you'll notice it waking lots even with screen OFF. So it seems there are some extremely battery intensive processes that are going on all the while in the background. And when I click on the Android Services battery breakdown, I get about a five page list of processes that are running (also attached), which really does seem excessive for an operating system alone. Could it just be lots of network installed bloatware?
Unfortunately, Samsung told me that past Monday I'd have no chance to bring the phone back for a refund, so now it seems I'm left with fixing it myself or selling it.
As a Note 2 owner who relied on the great battery life I am very disappointed with this.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions for getting to the bottom of this -- or figuring out if there i simply a hardware fault at play here.
Here is the long list of Android System processes I've got running:
Root your phone and control your awake events by App Ops, Amplify, maybe Greenify.
Bloatware sucks. I deactivated almost everything and it works for the moment! But root will be the only way to get more Performance. S health for example i a battery drainer....

Thanks: how many processes are running in your Android system now you rooted?
Is this the solution? Because obviously if I root, then it makes getting an exchange even more complicated..
Can you tell me how to take a large screenshot? I will post u the process list. My device is not rooted. I will wait to be sure that my hardware is ok.
Thanks. I actually had to make that in Photoshop. It took five individual shots.
Quick update at end of the day.

Is this really the best a thousand dollar phone can do?

That's what i disabled [emoji6]
Not sure what those apps are as they are not visibly running.... i feel the issue may be related to the sheer amount of bloatware the korean providers bundle into the system...
Is there any tool to do an optimum battery test so I can figure out if it's software?
Wakelock detector but u need root.
Dude go to appsettings and start disabling all that bull**** my phone is good now. Check every app an decide to use it or not.
My note4 SM-910L from LG+ korea too
And this is my battery stat
As you can see i use airplane mode all the time. Only use wifi and battery still good ( play shadow fight, ppsspp ,... ) and sot can reach 5h easily.
Sync takes up a lot of battery
Yes but deactivating all services of a device takes all the features u pay for.
I got up to 5-6h display time on my 3rd charge.

Well, I'm in the Samsung Service Center again and they just updated the build of the OS, slightly different one although it's still 4.4.4
He said that would fix it, but I spent fifteen mins in the shop after getting it back and battery drained 5% already.
Yet all his diagnostic tests are coming back fine...
They're taking another look at it now, but I'm not particularly hopeful of a solution.
And as someone is suggesting: what is the point of buying these new devices if you only have to disable 95% of functionality to get decent battery life?
I'm convinced there is a hardware issue at play in mine, my two year old Galaxy Note 2 gives about 30 % batter than the brand new note 4; that can't be right!
Same problem here
Hello there i got the same problem with my rooted sm-n910k and i installed amplify and now i can see where is the battery drain . I got battery drain from :
Service Name :
com.sec.android.app.soundalive
Wakelock :
RILJ1
I will also atach some pictures to find out if you got same problem like me
I have the sm-n910k too (Korean standard one).
Since going to the shop nothing is better.
Today 14 hours of power, with about 2.5 hours of screentime (not web browsing, but mainly s-note stuff).
Is this really it?!
Is Is it because the SM 910K (Korean version) uses a different chipset to rest of the world that the battery is so poor?
The guys in the Korean Samsung Service center shop told me that the battery life I am getting is NORMAL.
But look at the attached screenshots: <13 hours. Is that really normal? If so I am very, very disappointed...

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the ASUS ROG Phone II before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Nothing yet? ?
I've gotten about 6.5 hours of screen on time. With it at 120hz and playing a lot of games. I'll have to chart my display next time. Though gaming tends to drain it a bit quicker.

It is a 6k battery i thought it would last long !
Lots of gaming and the screen set to 120hz while getting 6.5hrs is pretty impressive to me. Especially when you consider I don't play games on my phone at all. Can't wait to see the screen time I'll be getting. Can't wait for next week!
3 hours and 40 minutes in at 50%

What did you do in those 3h and 40min SOT? Gaming? YouTube?
I see AdGuard drains a lot of battery on your phone too..

How is batterylife with "normal usage?" Watching YouTube, checking Facebook, gaming a little, etc.
I usually do like a solid hour or so of gaming and have my screen on at work to watch YouTube videos and podcasts so for an 8 hour day my screen is on, I work 7/4 and make it home with about 45% left. Then I more or less use steam link until about 10pm, forget to charge my phone and wake up with my phone at like 18ish percent left.

Got any pictures of battery-usage without any (or just a little gaming)? I just want to see how batterylife is when using it "as a normal phone." Maybe just 60/90hz too?
Yeah here we are. Now I'm about to game until the phone hits 9%
This is with the screen set to 90hz
The battery life on this phone is incredible!! I'm now sitting at 1 day and 4 hours off the charger, with 7 hours and 5 minutes of screen on time, and I STILL have 53% battery remaining! That includes a couple hours of emulator gaming as well. Brightness has generally been around 50% (though adaptive brightness is on so it fluctuates up and down), and screen has been set to 120hz most of that time. WiFi on, Bluetooth on, mobile data on, location on, no battery saving modes set.
Can attest to this. 9 hours and going strong. Going to game until the end of night and check in. 120hz medium brightness.
Update to my previous post above:
Phone finally died! Final battery stats before it died was two full days off the charger (48+ hours), 13 hours of screen on time, including several hours of emulator gaming. WiFi on, Bluetooth on, Mobile data on, location on, mix on 90hz and 120hz screen setting, 50% brightness with adaptive brightness on. I was just using my phone as normal the entire time, I was NOT trying to stretch the battery life as long as possible.

Battery life is mind blowing
Hi,
Don't know if this is the right thread to ask this question.
I have less than 10 post as of the moment so please forgive if i cannot add an image.
I have the CN version which I converted to WW (PKQ1.190414.01)
All is working well except for the SoT of the device. Google Play services is eating a big bulk of my battery.
As of this posting my battery percentage is at 70% with google play services at the top of the list for the most battery drain @ 11% and screen usage is only 5%.
I did not do any gaming only social media for about 45 mins and youtube for 2 hrs.
Can anybody give me advice? thanks!
Steps currently taken:
-clear cache of google play services
-remove account auto sync
-disabled location services

Have you tried rebooting? This seems a little high, but not unreasonable battery drain if using high brightness and mostly using data.
Looking forward to trying out the battery today. Last night my son and I both played on a Razer Phone 2 and an iPhone XS. He was playing the latter - some Apple Arcade racing game that worked for a 3 year old; I was playing Asphalt on the RP2. Battery on the iPhone XS got hammered pretty quickly. The Razer was solid, but holy cow it got wicked hot.

Yeah that's high. I'm currently sitting at 71% battery on my ROG Phone 2 (same model as yours) and Google Play Services has only used 1% of that battery according to the built in battery page. I'd say, if you told the phone to restore apps and settings from a previous device during setup, you have a rogue app that got copied over or installed that's eating battery via Google Play Services...
