[Q] Which Galaxy Note 3? Questions within >> - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I have a situation and was hoping to hear some input on other alternatives I might've looked over. I have been with VZW since 09/25/12 and my current contract doesn't end until '14. I signed a family plan contract with my wife and I, (both started with the SGS3 -she's still using hers), but I've sold my handset last week, (temporarily using a flip phone awaiting the GN3). Now, what I was planning on doing was buying the VZW GN3 outright and using it until my contract is up in '14; I do realize buying outright will cost me ~$700 + tax, but I don't see a better option for me to upgrade as I am unable to upgrade handsets for another year and I do want a newer device or a new phone number. Is buying outright my best option? Should I invest in insurance, (I'm thinking yes for such a costly device, but which insurance? VZW insurance?)
Secondly, I will likely want my GN3 rooted with a custom ROM and the ability to tether, I've heard where people have stated with the KNOX feature and being on VZW, I will not be able to unlock the bootloader and thus not be able to root. If that is the case, and I am buying outright, should I not buy the VZW version and buy another brand GN3, (ie T-Mobile?). Again, I want to be able to do what Androids are meant to be able to do -customize. If I buy a $700 device I want to make sure I'll not be let down, hence my worries and questions.
Thirdly, and lastly, I plan on selling my wife's SGS3 and purchasing a VZW SGS4 for her. Granted, her SGS3 is not rooted and she isn't making use of the functionality available by rooting, is buying a VZW SGS4 her best option, (ie from Craigslist). Or can you "SIM unlock" another carrier's SGS4 that may be able to root/custom ROM, (unsure whether the SGS4 from VZW is rootable).
Thanks guys for any and all input! I realize some of my questions may have been answered, but making a single thread with cohesive answers for my questions is a far more efficient method for me to aid in purchasing my device.

Anybody care to chime in? Also with the GN3, is voice and data simultaneously operatable like the Sgs3?

You can't use a gsm carrier phone on a cdma network. Some roms may work but cell towers are different.

Anyone? I understand the differences between GSM vs. CDMA.

Spotted AT&T Version Galaxy Tab on Amazon for Order

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CYEQF0/ref=oss_product
I'm thinking of placing an order, but might wait cause they're over pricing it. But I'm glad an AT&T version actually exist. I wonder if they locked out the side loading though
Hello and welcome to last week. AT&T's Tab has been in people's hands since...well, last week.
Doubt it'll get much cheaper this year, Amazon's price is the AT&T price.
Side loading is locked out but that's no hill for a climber, you can use the Sideloading Wonder Machine if you don't want to tinker with the firmware, or just flash the (slightly modified) Euro firmware on it and enable sideloading AND phone calling.
Heh i put in a order for it. I got a question though, I dont have a AT&T data/voice plan. Do i need to buy one of them sim cards on ebay and activate it on the website for a data/voice plan so i can use my tab as a 80's era monster phone?
Cool I been trying to keep with this but haven't seen anything about att release till yesterday. My normal sites had no mention of it being out yet. I really hate that att is still doing this baby sitting bs with android. I'm assuming rooting will be easy to do on this as the TMo version.

[Q] Month-to-Month and off-contract

Hey guys,
Just wanted to ask if anyone knows whether AT&T's "month-to-month" means that you have to activate the phone, with a new plan, on AT&T only. I talked to a Verizon rep yesterday and unfortunately that's true with VZW (so I can't pay the full price and run away, i have to open a new line with them).
The good news is that "all of [their] 4G phones are sim-unlocked" (quoting Verizon rep here). But what's the good in that if I have to start a line of service with them?
Can someone ask for me pretty please (AT&T's live chat is for their customers only)?
This would be rather annoying; i'd prefer not to buy the Canadian version because I'd have to wait for everything to be confirmed compatible.
1) AT&T's has a back mic that no one else has. SUPRISE!
2) TMO's has a 2.4MP front vs 2.1MP for all other versions?? SUPRISE!
3) I'm not going to even mention Verizon's.
4) F320 G2s are veryyyyy expensive on the web and so far don't have much support here.
5) Telling from the above, the Canadian D803 is probably going to come up with another surprise of its own.
Thanks.
I'm not sure what you're asking. If you want this phone at a subsidized price, you have to be on a contract with one of the providers that have the G2. If you want to buy it outright you can buy it anywhere for full retail price. You don't have to be a customer to pick up the G2 at full retail price. Or at least I don't think you do. Then you can use whatever carrier you want so long as the hardware is compatible with the carrier (for example, straight talk would work in an at&t G2 or an unlocked Verizon G2, I believe). What are you asking, more specifically?

Ok. Let's just say I want to buy the Verizon G2. I need to know if I can pay $600 up front at a store, then take it back to Canada to put it on TELUS. What Verizon is telling me is that I have to open a line with them (I'm guessing for one month) first, basically activate it with Verizon first.
I need to know if this is true or just BS, and if AT&T does the same.
They may have changed the rules to be that way but I've never known at&t to do that.

Your buying the phone. Not service
When you open the line you open a contract unless prepaid.when you open a contraxt you should not be paying full price for the phone. When you buy the phone at full price its yours. You do what you want. I buy full price phone all the time. And i dont even need a account with thrm. Go in ask for the phone and say device only . Your buying the hardware

Oh but one more question though, will they unlock it for me right then and there? What about AT&T?
Verizon usually makes all of their devices unlocked out of the box if they have GSM radios. At&t may unlock it or may not. If they don't there is a website that I saw in the General section that will unlock the G2 for a few dollars.

Okay here's a ? How can I prevent scammers from calling me without using a app? I keep getting a scam call saying that big red has awarded me soso amount off my bill and they keep changing the # and when ever I call vzw to report it they act like it's not their problem thanks
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Mhm...definitely strange. I have heard of that scenario as well from some of customers. First off if your getting a call saying that they awarded you some money of your bill thats a lie. Two...if anyone calls you saying that they can save you money on your verizon bill then that could be a local verizon account rep your speaking with. However if that turns out to be the case they will normally attempt to set up an appointment with you to come in to a local store so they can do an waa with you (wireless account analysis) to see what can be done on your account to see if they can help you save a couple bucks a month, see if you have any available upgrades and etc. Three...if they are not directing you to a local store then thats extremely fishy. 4. As far as blocking spammers from calling you without using a app would really depends o what device you currently have. I have a note 3 and it provides exellent call blocking, text blocking and etc features. Which device do you currently have?

How can I add a line with unlimited data?
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Verizon no longer currently offers a unlimited plan to new lines of service. The only way you can have the unlimited data plan currently is by a having grandfathered in or b talking to a friend or family member who has a line that with the unlimited plan that they will be willing to give up to you through the means of assumptions of liabilites meaning if they would be willing to give up the line to you...you then can take over that line of service and put it under your name. However by doing so they will run your credit again to see if your aproved to take over that line. Also added benefit in doing so is that wherever that person left off in their contract would be where you would continue off from. By taken over the line ut does not require you to restart the contract of that new line you just took over and put underneath your name.

Can we please keep the ability to root the device? I feel that a Locked Bootloader, even though not ideal, is okay as long as Verizon keeps the device relatively updated. (Or to put in other words, I don't think that Verizon would ever allow the bootloader to be unlocked).
But without root, there are a lot of features that Samsung have removed (such as the ability to add Widgets to the lock screen when it is locked) and wouldn't be accessible to us even though it is available to most other android devices. Same with backups.
Ive heard talks about this petition to unlock the bootloader for the note 3 but to be honest ive not heard any confirmation or caught any wind of verizon actually doing that. And yeah I see what your saying. And I can add lockscreen widgets to my note 3 without root.

I'm having crackling and poping sounds from my earpiece and the home button is wobbly. I am getting a certified refurbished replacement in the morning. If the replacement has issues what are the chances of getting a brand new device?? I haven't had the best luck with refurbished replacement. And are the certified refurbished replacement really refurbished?? I mean the phone hasn't been out a month yet.
I live in an area with the worst service for Verizon. I never receive calls or texts. My only option is a network extender. Is it possible to get one for free? I spent $400 on this phone and now I'm locked down for 2 years. I don't wanna spend another $300 to use the phone I just bought. -_-

@Southern mind im sorry about the problems your having with your find. As far ar you getting a new device your chance might be 65% id say since the device is still new. And since the phone just came out that certified refurbished device may not really be one. Could be brand spanking new

@eurofeik hey bud. And the coverage within your area is that bad? What type of device do you have by the way? Is it a 3g device or a 4g? For the price you said you spent on the phone am guessing you probably have a 4g device if so thats strabge your signal is that bad because normally with our 4g devices the technology increases in building penetration, voice quality and reception. Also what area do you live near? So I can look furthermore in to details for you? And I cant promise you that they will give you one for free but have you also tried calling customer care and seeing what they say?

That I go out and plunk down $600.00 for a new VZW S5 and out of the box it is of a newer version that can't be rooted?
(I have to buy full retail to keep un-limited data plan)
I should be able to power it up out of box prior to purchase to check version number? What ver should I be looking for or what to avoid like the plague?

It has nothing to do with when the phone was made. It has to do with the firmware of the phone and since the firmware version hasnt changed since the phone was rooted then you will be fine. It may not even make a difference when new firmware is released. It depends on if google fixes the loophole because its not just a samsung problem, its an android problem. The root works for most any android device. If you have been keeping up with you it, you would know that Google recently hired the guy, geohot, that found the root, so it is only a matter of time before it is fixed but it will take a long time to release new firmwares for every phone infected. This may never happen and it just may be fixed in new phone releases such as the note 4 or galaxy s 6.

Good point !! The only problem I envision I may encounter is the extended warranty. I bought the GNEX the week it hit the market and pay the 5 bux a month for the extended warranty. I drive a truck and am rough on phones. The charging port loosens up and quits working. I've already checked with VZW and they offer it on the standard S5. I am on my 5th GNEX over the years that they have over-nighted me at no cost with the warranty. I'm going to have to find out if I can get that on the dev edition.
Edit:Yeah I was afraid of that .... just got out of a chat session with VZW rep. To get the extended warranty I would have to buy the phone from VZW. They don't sell the dev edition, I would have to get it directly from Sammy and that only has the one year warranty. I didn't see anywhere on the sammy site to open a chat window to enquire about an extended warranty but I doubt it's available. Not to mention you have to send the phone in under their warranty terms and wait for a replacement. With VZW, they over-night a phone along with a paid return sticker and package and I have 10 days to return the broken phone. Can't go without my phone for weeks waiting for a replacement.
I've been running custom ROMS since my original MotoDroid and can't imagine going back to running stock. BUT !! I am grandfathered into the un-limited data plan and run the house off of the phones. Got rid of cable internet when they lit my town with 4G and I get 27.5m down and 18+ up.... So long as I can enable the wifi hotspot to broadcast, I guess I could live with a less than un-locked phone for now. Hoping in the future it will be.
You can get the warranty. When I was activating my phone I purchased online elsewhere the rep told me I could get it since they currently have "open enrollment" this was exactly a week ago. It's call back and all about it.

If VZW does not stock the dev edition, they aren't going to have a refurbed one on hand to replace mine with under the extended warranty. I can see what would happen now. Even if they sold me the extended warranty, if something happened and I had to get it replaced, the phone they will send out will be a standard consumer grade S5. I'll try another vzw rep but they were emphatic I must purchase from VZW to add the extended warranty to the phone.
Edit: just chatted with another rep and they told me yes I could get the ext warr when I activate phone. I mentioned how will they replace it if they don't stock it? rep's reply "good point" ... he agreed with me they would send out a consumer grade phone as a replacememt.

The rep probably had no clue. This is what they will do. The phone is exactly the same except for the dev has unlocked bootloader. So they will take an original refurb and rebrand it as a dev edition with unlocked bootloader and dev firmware. Its not that hard, just because we cant flash certain things doesnt mean they cant. You will get a refurb equal to what you bought. That simple.

Not exactly that simple. It is true, you get a refurb equal to what you bought if bought from VZW. They do not sell the dev edition and I was told since dev edition is un-locked it automatically voids any warranty that VZW would recognize/honor, since they do not sell un-locked phones. My only hope would be if Samsung sold an extended warranty, which they don't. I did verify, they are currently having an 'open enrollment' where you can warranty a phone bought from other than VZW, but the un-locked proviso is in place according to them. It was the store manager I talked this over with and he seems quite knowlegble. I've dealt with him for years.
Yes, I love ROM's have been flashing since my original moto-droid. But so long as I can activate tethering to run the house on the phone I'd be all right. Looking for an answer as to whether I can revert to full stock to be able to do a warranty exchange if I safestrap it ...

Carrier Unlocked

Nexus 6P Unlocked can be used on all carriers. Will there be a Galaxy S7 Unlocked which follows? I will be sold if so...
You cant just buy a phone from a carrier and expect to flash an unlocked ROM on it. Partitions are different most of the time, etc...
My main concern is the speed of which updates are released. A carrier phone can take months longer than an unlocked phone. Yeah you can download custom ROMs here on XDA, but it's not the same and could have issues due to carrier kernel not being released.
Definitely a make or break deal for me at this point...
I really wished there was, but so far all of the carrier models have different bands, and I haven't heard of a US unlocked model that works for all of them.
I can't decide if it is worth the fight, or if I should just fall in line, and buy at&t's Fort Knox Edition.
They're a little more pricy (read +$200/300), but you can pre-order unlocked Qualcomm variants on eBay.
It's a hell of a markup, but if you're already paying $800 for a phone you're gonna use for the next couple years, may as well get one that's unlocked and will do what you want i.e. run AOSP, no?

What was the time between the Samsung s6 edge pre-order and when the unlocked international versions came out? Because my UK s6 edge is soooooooo much better than the AT&T US version I originally bought and returned. I definitely want to just skip to the UK unlocked version this time around... but, of course, I don't want to wait a long time.
I'm assuming the s7 rollout will be similar, so that will let us know when the unlocked Samsung s7 edges can be expected. (I was an iPhone person until recently, so I don't know my Samsung history).
Thanks in advance for any info.
(For anyone wondering, not only was there that US AT&T bloatware nonsense -- but they actually removed cool things Samsung had added and removed deals and freeware Samsung had added to the phone. Just crazy. Things would be mentioned in the manual and not be on the phone anywhere. And then of course the bad updates as well.)
im the guy waiting for S7edge with S820 and choosing Snapdragon is of course to get update faster and support by the custom rom community than Exynos version.
As one of a guy responded in Reddit chat is to start ordering UNLOCKED SIM Samsung S7 from ebay would be the easiest and fastest option... I am ouside of US and really don't want to wait indefinitely their not-sure-release-date Carrier Unlocked version. Below is the one that I am watching closely. As it said Pre-order, I am a bit afraid of the RISK of ordering a phone that cost >1000$ without seeing actual unlocked & S820 phone as they mention.
[EDIT: can't put links due to lower posts count] googled this eBay item number:281944393668
tmobile unlock or wait?
I'm in the same boat here, although my situation is a little unique. I'm on Tmobile right now but I'm going to move to Thailand this summer, so the phone needs to be unlocked. According to tmobile they'll unlock the phone after i'ts been on the network for 40 days (I'm planning on buying it upfront). Should I go that route or just wait until the unlocked version shows up on amazon and just buy that?
Cheers
(Also, does anyone know how long it took for the unlocked s6 to show up on amazon?)
40 days of service active if you actually on postpaid. If it is prepaid it's $100 worth of payments.

Did you have to get a mobile plan with them? They told me at the store that is the only way
T-Mobile no longer use codes. They use a unlock app. There is no way so far to input any codes to date on the devices that have it preinstalled.

Well the Verizon will work well in most cases on T-Mobile however Verizon phones will always have a locked down bootloader. So if you buy it be prepared to potentially never unlock it for a very long time.

Tapatalk won't let me modify...
Well the Verizon will work well in most cases on T-Mobile however Verizon phones will always have a locked down bootloader. So if you buy it be prepared to potentially never unlock it for a very long time.

Thanks! So the best option would be Tmo?
If you want Wi-Fi calling , RCS, and VoLTE it's probably preferred. If you plan on rooting and custom Roms. Then T-Mobile is a good choice. T-Mobile for the past 4 years has always left it up to the manufacturer to either lock it or leave it. So far all but Sony have unlocked or unlockable bootloaders.
