Galaxy S 5 Tizen or Android ? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What do you think Galaxy S 5 will include. Tizen Or Android ?
Which One do you prefer ?
We have a lot of rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S5, now that the release date is getting closer and now we’re hearing again that one variant of the device will come with Tizen OS instead of Android 4.4 KitKat. Along with this, it’s also rumored that it will feature an optical image stabilization camera (OIS) and aluminium body.
Tizen is Samsung’s proprietary operating system and they are expected to release some devices running it very soon. It’s pretty clear that Samsung intends to help this operating system become more popular, but shipping a Tizen OS Galaxy S5 would be a really long shot as it doesn’t come with Google Play and all the apps available for Android.
These rumors don’t have any clear source and I wouldn’t rely very much on them, as I don’t believe Samsung is willing to take that risk with Tizen just yet. Before releasing their flagship smartphone with their proprietary operating system, they need to attract developers and create a decent app store. Currently Google Play is the biggest app store and you can find virtually every app you need there.
It’s been proved already that operating systems without a wide range of apps don’t manage to get traction, as we’ve seen the struggle of Blackberry and Windows Phone.
Samsung has been trying for a while to distance themselves from Android, but we’ve seen a change once with the Galaxy Note 3′s release. Until now they didn’t say anything about Android in their smartphone releases, but that changed at the Unpacked event this month.
The Korean maker might have realized that Android is what helps them lead the smartphone market and they probably wouldn’t be able to do it without Google.
So you should be confident that Samsung Galaxy S5 won’t come with Tizen OS, as they can’t ship their flagship smartphone without an app store, while their competition has Google Play, the world’s biggest app store.
We do believe that it will feature an aluminium body andwe’ve been the ones to break the news about this back in June. And it should feature OIS too, as camera technologies have evolved a lot and it’s now doable.

Android due the apps, unless tizen is android compatible and the battery

I think there will be the possibility that there will be 2 versions one running android and one running tizen

Maybe a dual boot system?

I doubt you'll ever see Tizen on a shipping device. It's all about the Apps... and who is going to write Tizen apps?
For the users... its all about the Apps. They'll buy the device that has the fancy apps and can play all the games.
For the developers... they'll write the Apps for the devices they can make money from. And one (1) phone does not make you money on apps unless you are apple and sell 9 million phones in a weekend.
Look how hard Microsoft is working to try and get developers to write apps for its phones? ($100 giftcard for every app!)
Tizen is dead before arrival...

If anyone can break free from Android it would be Samsung. As far as apps they can be expanded. I would be all for it if it was open source (heard that it was could be wrong) and updates were more frequently. Samsung already has an app store. That being said I don't believe Tizen is ready for prime time. Plus with Android being free I don't know why the need to venture on their own

Galaxy S2 confirmed get Android 4.0

Samsung Italy has reportedly confirmed which of the Korean company’s Android devices will receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update, with models such as the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 each supposedly in line for a 4.0 upgrade. The Italian arm of the firm listed the GSII and the Tab 10.1, HDBlog claims, along with the Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Tab 7.7 and Tab 7.0 Plus as all being eligible for a tasty frozen treat. However, don’t expect it any time soon.
According to the report, the updates won’t begin until Q2 2012, potentially six months after Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus goes on sale. Samsung confirmed to us last night at the kick-off of the Galaxy Note European Tour that the oversized smartphone would get Android 4.0, as reported in our Galaxy Note vs Galaxy Nexus hands-on, but said that, since the company had been working closely with Google on ICS, they expected to beat competitors to the market with upgrades for existing devices.
(Source :http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-android-4-0-ics-updates-in-2012-reportedly-detailed-28191699/)
I hope, we won't have to wait that long...
Waiting 6m+ would be a joke in my opinion - the GS2 is the leading current Android phone in performance and sales, for it to take so long to get 4.0 makes the whole platform seem a bit weak seeing as by then we'll presumably be in the midst of hype building for iphone 5 which would a) have new features ics doesn't have and b) copy anything worthwhile from ics.
I don't believe extended Nexus exclusivity does either Google or Samsung any favours at all...
i don't like to wait.
i read somewhere that it wont get 4.0 until after the galaxy s3 is released.
me too think so. Galaxy S got gingerbread update only after S2 released. So.... I doubt it might be the bad wait more news coming soon...
But anyway v will get it wont v.
Or if v need it faster CM will always be there to help us

I don't see what the big deal with ICS is. What will my phone do or do better with that operating system that it can't do now.

Just about everything. It doesn't bring many new features, but it optimizes the old ones and makes the whole experience better.
I'm eagerly waiting for ICS in my SGSII
You wont be waiting that long if you're a flash fan. No doubt there will be leaks etc before the official release.

For me, is the joysticks support. I have so many usb joysticks, but none of them are working right now on GingerBread.
Initially I heard ICS for S2 coming next year only, thats fine looking at time required to test stability but throwing the it in Q2 is ridiculous!

Won't Samsung have had ics to develop the galaxy nexus? If so wouldn't they have been developing the upgrades for their phones, negotiated as part of the deal to make the nexus phone?
I think galaxy S2 will be the first to receive the update before any other device, firstly Samsung and Google worked extremely closely on some of the software aspects of ICS namely the Camera app and the launcher itself, also the Galaxy nexus share some hardware components with the Galaxy S2.
Also lets face it the Galaxy nexus is underwhelming specs-wise except the Screen of course (Even though it's Pentile).
Don't forget that Samsung also want to sell a LOT of their nexus device and making it the only device in their range to have ics makes complete business sense. They've sold lots of sgs2 already, time for the nexus.
I know it may be a little frustrating for us, but as someone has already said, we'll get it much earlier via a leaked ROM.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Q2 2012? F**k me...
What are people doing with their phones to make them slow and desperately need ICS? Am I missing a free hookers and drugs app?
I agree we will get within weeks of the launch whether it be from Samsung or an AOSP ROM doesn't bother me because the one main gripe I have with AOSP ROM's is the lack of hardware acceleration and the absolutely terrible camera app, Samsung's Touchwiz is hardware accelerated which is why it is so smooth.
It does make perfect business sense to delay ICS for the GS2 but people don't buy the "Google Phone" because of its specifications they buy it because its the "Google Phone" the one advantage of doing this is the quick updates, other than that there are far better devices, the Galaxy Nexus isn't even released yet and its already outclassed by devices such as ours that have been out for over 6 months.
ICS and the screen are the only saving graces of the Galaxy Nexus. needless to say it will still sell extremely well because as I mentioned its the "Google Phone".

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean tipped for Q2 2012 - SlashGear

Here is news worthy information that came across my inbox.
Retrieved from here
Android 5.0 Jelly Bean may arrive as early as Q2 2012, supply chain sources claim, with Google apparently integrating Chrome OS functionality for dual-boot tablets and netbooks. Those aren’t the search giant’s only dual-OS ambitions, however; insiders tell DigiTimes that Google is pushing Android 5.0 and Windows 8 hybrids to its manufacturing partners, for notebooks, netbooks and tablets that offer the best of both platforms.
Although Google is yet to comment significantly on whether Ice Cream Sandwich has met its expectations in the market, it’s clear that Android 4.0 is yet to gain a significant foothold. According to Google’s own stats, as of February 1 2012 only 1-percent of devices were running ICS, with the majority still on Android 2.3.x Gingerbread.
The dual-booting Android 5.0 Jelly Bean and Windows 8 machines will be able to hot-swap between the two platforms, the sources indicate, rather than demanding a reboot each time. That would give users the opportunity to use Android for its web-centric functionality and speed, while switching to Windows would offer the various legacy and business apps many users still demand. Update: It’s worth remembering that Microsoft’s Windows 8 hardware requirements apparently block second OS installation on ARM-based PCs by users, thanks to a locked Secure Boot system, though it’s unclear whether OEMs are permitted to do so before the hardware leaves the factory. [Thanks Richard!]
Google is supposedly seeing Android 5.0 as a second chance at the notebook and netbook markets, Chrome OS failing to grab attention as expected, though the tipsters warn that the response to Ice Cream Sandwich has left some partners “conservative” about the new platform.
Part of Google’s challenge is encouraging timely OS updates among vendors. Motorola revealed its timescale for upgrading US Android devices yesterday, with most not expected to see Ice Cream Sandwich until Q3 2012 or later.
Dual booting Android and Windows 8 from the factory? I doubt it. Would be pretty cool, though. Save us a lot on the hacking side of things
Very true. Yeah Google needs to figure out that they're being crippled by stupid manufacturers who refuse to release timely updates for their devices... This is foolish that ics has been out since... November? And 4 months later, only a few high end devices have ics on them? How the heck is ics supposed to make an impact on anyone if 4 months into the update very few phones have it? They need to have it completed before announcing it and give it to the manufacturers to start working with and get their phones running on it before making the announcement and official release otherwise it becomes old news before it's even on a good portion of high end devices. Foolish.

I completely agree with you, but it seems like 5.0 will be for notebooks and netbooks, like honeycomb was for tablets.
i'll stick to even numbered releases (2.x, 4.x, etc.)
yea, it would really help if manufacturers would quit spending 6 months modding the OS before even possibly releasing it to their devices. But the problem is that they make their money by selling the latest greatest hardware which is more difficult if you can get the latest greatest version of the OS on older hardware. I'm running a Vibrant that now has ICS on it thanks to all the independent devs out there that in my mind are the reason android has done as well as it has. If google REALLY wants their newer version to be adopted, they would put clauses in their contracts that limits the amount of customization a manufacturer can do and requires them to justify delays past a certain period of time between G's release of a version and the manufacturer's release of it to all devices that meet requirements that would accompany each release from G.
But none of this is going to happen LOL.
One of the things that really burns me on this topic is that of all the mods that the manufacturers put on that I've used... none of them actually enhance the experience much if at all.
Does Android 5.0 support push service and limit the background applications? That will be smooth, faster and save battery. Just need a service to call app when they have an update.

Bad news for all of us... :crying: :crying: :crying:
Samsung Touchwiz crap
Not going to flash even if they release 4.3. I prefer to be on CM. Much more smooth and better battery life.
Good said Modej,
I also using AOKP but with some touchwiz features 1. Because I like it touchwiz launcher.
And Second I want in AOKP that be another lockscreen but I think it's not possible :/
We only need egl blobs and kernel source from GS3 4.3 to run CM10.2 well (not stable but pretty decent like CM10.1).

Agree and disagree with your comment. 100% agree with the smoothness part but sammy 4.1.2 roms with a good stock kernel offer the best battery life (Up to 7hrs screen on time, my record was 6 hrs screen-on time spread over about 1 day)
What a lame excuse for not updating.
Sincerely shame on you Samsung.
I think it's not a surprise. Sammy couldn't give us usable exynos drivers for oasp. So they probably couldn't figure it out themselves. Looks bad anyway. ..

Unfortunately, based on what other brands are doing, we cannot blame so much Samsung. We got last official update few weeks ago for a device which is in the market from beginning of 2011. Of course who bought the device one year after it was in the market (like me!) got a better price but having more or less one year of software support and counting mostly on XDA community to keep the device alive.
We should blame who has promised 18 months of updates but failed to keep their promises (I know HTC for example).
Most of the cases there are not technical reasons not updating devices but just marketing. I would be happy having 24 months as minimum software support.
Correct me if Im wrong but I havent read any on that article that it is official? So why go on rampage blaming Samsung on the statement which might be a fallacy? You will just stress yourself.

4.3 seems a little far fetched. ....considering the aging of our device .I doubt Samsung will push any further updates for us ...
And its so silly. They said that s2+ will get the update bcuz it has more power than S2 (seems lik a marketing strategy 2 me)...
On tge the latest report it says Samsung owns 47% of all android devices.i think out of those 30% represents S2, S3 & S4 .
S2 still has a very large scale of users , its a shame Samsung is leaving us in the dark..
Well I guess its time to move on to S3 , S4 , N4 or H One ...

But dont blame the Manufacturers too much
Everyone should think back to the Times where Android wasnt there
Symbian times for Example... Updates came pretty Slow BUT they came and where everytime pretty Bugfree and with Really Good Performance and all that
The Update Floods on the Android OS doesnt makes it any Easyer for the Manufacturers nor the Devs i think
Google makes everything very Complicated for everyone, and i am sure that all Manufacturers first gonna bring out the newest versions to the newest Phones
Why ...Pfff Because they Have to keep The NEW things more up to date then the Old .
Well I know other nonnexus android manufacturers are much worse. I'm not even sure the HTC Sensation and Xperia arc of 2011 received 4.1.2 yet.
But seriously samsung can't compare with those manufacturers as they are not as big as samsung.
Samsung should see how apple gives software updates to old phones as apple is the only manufacturer as big as samsung and hence their main competitor.

Here is where you miss the point.
Apple has like what 5 devices to support?
3GS, 4, 4S, 5
Whereas Samsung has a portfolio the size of an Apple Farm.. XD
So they focus on the newer models which is natural, to boost their sales and try to keep up with others.
And while they do, Google keeps launching updates after updates.
One such example is,
Galaxy S Advance, It was supposed to get ICS but by the time it's turn came, ICS was outdated, so Samsung directly gave it GB to JB.
I think we will get our 4.2 update somewhere around my birthday in Nov'13

I think what samsung should instead do is to give the best support for those who paid more for the premium Galaxy S line and note line, otherwise their image will be no better than their mid range and budget phones line.
It's their own fault since the beginning actually. Their flagships so far is S, S2, S3, S4, Note 1 and Note 2. However, each flagship got so many variants. For example, the S4 has 14 variants including the zoom and active according to wikipedia.
Samsung might be able to convince people to buy their product. However, I'm afraid they can't convince people to buy their product for the second time.

Samsung won't give any new feature for past models. Even these features will be present in future ROM releases (usually it comes with android upgrade because based on the same source code as newer models), they will be disabled anyway. Today new devices aren't much more powerful than previous, so, in most cases only software features make new models more attractive than previous (my S4 SHV-E330S is almost identical to S5 SM-G900F).
Every manufacturer prefers to sell newer devices and earn money than support the old one for free. So, they need to stimulate purchases as much as possible (in Russia we call it "potrebliadstvo").
Samsung did premium upgrade once in the past for previous model(s) and realized they got no benefits from this and additionally let some potential buyers still keep their current phones (i.e. lost some money). Without strict requirements from Google we wouldn't get even android upgrades.
In short: only 3rd party amateur devs can bring something from new to old devices.

First of all I am sure they did not start lollipop development for s4 mini.
So all the talk of "optimal experience" and "comprehensive testing" is BS.
Samsung's developers are noobs. With all those million dollar resources
they could not get lollipop working on a device with 1.5gb ram and fast
chipset. To be brutally honest F4k and arco68 are better than those fat
guys sitting at samsung. With limited resources F4k and arco68 did a great
job. We must be happy and privileged to have such great devs. :good:
This is not only with Samsung but for all the companies. I had the same experience with SONY, LG etc. So thanks to all our devs for keeping our phone alive.
All these clarifications by Samsung regarding optimal experience is a pure **llsh**.
When Android ONE hardwares can run lollipop there is no reason why these devices can't.
There should be an uniformity regarding giving updates as provided by Google for android ONE phones - support for two years.
I love Apple on this respect. Minimum three updates and the rumour for this year is iPhone 4s will get ios9 meaning thereby four continuous updates. Appreciable.
If one needs updates for android devices for a longer period of time, it's better to go for Nexus devices by Google, though single SIM but worth the investment.
Google should do something for this wide fragmentation in Android devices regardless their age and hardware. The companies should be somehow tied to commit a minimum support period for OS updates while buying.
Thanks
