mdf - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey everyone... so I have a problem and im not sure if anything will work... so I tried the free unlock method but it didnt work...but then my phone updated to the mf3 baseband... and when I got an unlock code it was denied.. I looked it up and its because I tried the free method... anyone know how I can get back onto mf3... would kies emergency recovery fix anything... quick replies would be appreciated since i just flew to england and need my phone

Afaik, if you try the free unlock too many times the phone permanently locks the ability to unlock it. There is no way to get that ability back.

I only tried the free unlock mode once, but now I can't get it to unlock with the unlock code I have. And I know there is a way if you have the old firmware to fix the problem, but I was wondering if Kies emergency restore would revert it back to the old firmware, or using Odin and a sammobile firmware would fix my issues

Don't listen to other forums. Stick to the real deal Xda att s4 section. There is no way to Odin, kies restore, etc to an older firmware if you took the official MF3 update. As to unlock, you can try fastgsm. They charge $15 via remote PC. Many folks used it since using the free unlock method toasted their unlocked via code method.

Thanks I'll try that... Whats stupid is that I didn't update my phone, and I woke up one day looked at my phone and it said updating android software or something like that... and I ended up being stuck with MF3

I seen a few people wake up to that. Its the sneaky OTA process that does it as we sleep. Its their way to snatch up the unaware

How can I reinstall official MF3 FW?

The reason is the network unlock key AT&T provided does not work. I suspect I messed up something when I was trying the free unlock methods where you enter the service menu and change a setting. After MF3 OTA I can't enter that menu either. So I believe if I reflash MF3, it would accept the network unlock code. If this would work, where do I find MF3 and how do I flash it (odin?)
Thanks much,
Nsical

Not up mf3 but believe it has been covered a lot and you can't at this time
Check in to some mf3 threads here--

There is no way to restore to stock MF3 with ODIN or other method currently.
You need to be careful messing around with the phone because anything you screw up is unlikely to be fixable until we have the stock firmware available.
Like rugamankc said, read up on MF3 before you do serious damage to your phone.
Something tells me he already screwed up or he wouldn't be asking this question.

AT&T provided network unlock code does not work. Everything else works. I am hopeful the gurus here will find a solution to MF3.

Go to best buy if they have a Samsung experience center they will flash your phone free of charge. I just had mine flashed today after I tried to install a custom recovery on MF3. Make sure they are aware that "Kies" caused the error.

Today I went to a best buy and they flashed the latest firmware with SMART tool. But even after that network unlock code did not work.

Well Kies has my S4 all up.

Not sure if the phone was previously rooted or not, but now when I turn it on it says firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please elecet recover mode in kies and try again. I tried an odin and it says FAIL (AUTH) any ideas?

Are you on MF3 firmware. And have you read the several threads available about the problems with Kies and ODIN with MF3 and any sollutions there might be?
The "pinned" threads in the general and Q&A sections are a good place to start. Also make sure to read any threads about MF3. Good luck.
If you are not on MF3 firmware, I still suggest you read.

Did you buy the phone in this condition? Because I can't imagine how any thought process would allow someone to do ANYTHING to a phone if they didn't at least (and I mean at the very least) know what firmware the phone was running. And actually, much more than that needs to be learned before the phone is ever touched.
So you bought it from someone like that?

Yes, and When I plugged it in it said that there was an update. Than here I am now in this boat. lol
MF3 can be J-Tagged now. So there is hope. Hit up mobiltechvideos. They do awesome work.

Try manually putting the phone into ODIN (download) mode and then manually cancel out of it (volume down button...I think). and see if it boots up. There is also a thread in the general section about "a fix for KIES", you might want to check it out. Also, apparently Best Buys stores can reflash MF3 phones if you ask them nicely. All of this might help if you were on MF3.
If you were not on MF3, try to ODIN back to stock. Only do this with MDB or MDL firmware.
Good luck.

No go, They said they couldn't get the phone to read......Which is stupid cause it runs on my computer fine.... I'm beyond frustrated.
It is possible that it has a partial EMMC failure. Try mobiltechvideos. I'm not joking. If they can fix it, nothing can.

I called AT&T and they are going send a warranty replacement, I was completely honest about my situations. After talking to Samsung at Best Buy, He told me it was a software issue and to contact AT&T
Guess what! I pulled this phone back alive! Oh yeah!!!! Stunning! HAPPY! lol Im looking for the link that saved my butt just touch base with everyone!

Mine working
Just to let everyone know I flashed to stock firmware MDL and when I rebooted it had a software update which I did without thinking which MF3. I then rooted with know problems and at this point I used goo manger and attempted to install CWM bad idea. Should have read but didn't but I read for a week trying to figure out and try everything I could think of no deal. I saw that people talked about going to best buy so I went to one close to me and system kept showing device not found the person told me he couldn't do anything so I called AT&T who wanted me to travel clear across the city to have it flashed or replaced. Decided that was to much so I went to another best buy and his system said not supported. He called Samsung and they wanted me to send it in or take to there Samsung repair center which was only couple miles away which I did. They had no problem flashing it funny thing they used Odin which they have the files for. I tried to get the guy to give me a copy of the software but he said he couldn't oh well I tried but it does prove that there is Odin files for it just have to wait. I know this is long post just thought that maybe it will help others.

[Q] help my bricked galaxy S4 MF3

Installed https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.font.installer&hl=en tried a custom font... BRICK
Things I tried to unbrick with
1.flashing a pit file in odin
Not tried
1. BestBuy, gonna trip out there after my college classes.
2. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unbrick-Ser...t-/271267344770?ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123 would like to do this only as a last resort as i am broke right now.
I'm posting on XDA for some help/suggestions on what i should do. (please note I have no custom recovery)
Also I saw someone say they put their phone on T-Mobile and took a T-Mobile OTA to replace the MF3 and then bootloader unlocked the T-Mobile update.
Edit: I do have the SGH-1337 sim unlocked currently running on airvoice going to make the switch to T-Mobile sometime this week.
Don't mess with the pit file. Best case, it didn't do anything, worst case I'd it messes up your phone worse that it is. You never mentioned what state your phone is in. Did it boot? Boot into download or what.
I think your best bet is best buy. They seem to be able to flash the mf3 firmware. It's basically the same thing jtag would do and it's free.

Wasn't thinking straight, it bootloops at the AT&T logo so I can hit download and stock recovery. tried factory reset from recovery, no dice. I'll be hitting up best buy asap. and do you anything about OTA'ing to T-Mobile and possibly unlocking that build?

You can use the Samsung kies program to do an emergency recovery. It should work. I'd try that before bestbuy.

Except kies doesn't have mf3...and more often than not makes the phone worse than before as it does a partial flash of (older) MDL until it gets stopped due to bootloader

You'd probably be better off going to a Best Buy that has a "Samsung Experience" booth. They can flash it back to stock MF3. The normal BB service counter will have no clue what your talking about.

[Q] Speaking Of Possibled bricked phones

I may have soft bricked my S4. I was trying to unlock the SIM for it yesterday and stopped due to a problem with getting the MSL so i just continued to use my phone as normal after following these galaxys4root(.)com/galaxy-s4-tutorials/how-to-unlock-sim-on-sprint-galaxy-s4/instructions I got to step 11 and gave up for the day.
I tried to load a different MDL and i kept getting a fail. Now i cant even boot my phone up to the OS.
Any thoughts of even just pointing me in the right direction :|
Im now at firmware upgrade encountered an iussue please select recovery mode in Kies & try again
Ill be using Samsung kies and probably start over
Id still like help on trying to actually sim unlock a SPH L-720 since ive yet to find a newish guide that walks through the downgrade to get the MSL# and such

Sounds like your on 4.3 if that's the case there is no downgrading to anything lower. In case your going to just have to Odin a 4.3 firmware..
Use this:

So i decided to message samsung and they told me go to best buy and have them reflash my OS think they can put it to 4.2.2?

If you were on 4.3 already than even Best Buy won't be able to install 4.2.2. I would save my self the hassle and just odin the MK2 tar file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601443 it is the fastest download speed. Then when you go to do the sim unlock, autoprime's thread has a link to an MDC modem only file to flash for the downgrade. You can not downgrade the whole firmware, but you can downgrade just the modem to accomplish the unlock.

Looks like neither of ya'll read enough. Well follow this thread.

There are other similar threads to search and read on.
Once we got the 4.3 MJA update. There was when out bootloader got locked by knox security from Samsung. We can't downgrade to any firmware by Odin but we can downgrade by ROMs just not the bootloader. You either need to use the firmware you are using to restore or update to a newer firmware.
Side comment. I still don't know why would you buy a specific phone for a carrier and use it for another carrier. Doesn't make sense.

You might want to Odin back to stock ng2 and do a factory reset. Also have you change your apns? That could be why you aren't getting 3g.
