So I love my new 2013 N7 over my 2012 a lot. But one thing that has been getting me is the weird speaker quality. On low volume it sounds full and almost has some bass in it like my 2012 N7. But once you turn it up pass the half way mark, the sound gets really thin and sort of poor. Anyone else notice this or am I going crazy? Any fix?
It is a 7 inch tablet with 2 tiny speakers. You are not going to get good base at high volume.

I upgraded from Nexus 7 (2012) to Nexus 7 (2013) and was a bit disappointed with the speakers. 2013 comes with two speakers (stereo) so it beat the one speaker in 2012 but not much better.

what your idea of good bass is. It may be better than the Nex but it did not sound that great to me.

The point is for me. It sounds good and has lil bass and fullness to it at the half volume mark. But turn it up pass then and it's terrible and thin. Almost like the software cut the EQ off at that point. As for headphones the volume is sort of low.
The Amazon kindle had good bass and sound on it's stereo speakers though.
It's a software algorithm built into the amplifier and speaker controller. Read about it in an article on the Nexus 7 build, possibly Anandtech. Basically, it prevents overloading of the speakers. As the volume goes beyond a certain level it lowers the bass percentage. Hence the tiny sound at high volume. Not the best solution.

well completely agreed with the above posts mentioned...sound quality is just fine and yes the algorithm designed for music volume and bass configuration helps you to increase the efficiency and durability of the speakers..so its a nice feature and provide the music volume that is sufficient as far considered...

u have 4viper mod on the nexus 7 FHD 2013? i have it on my nexus4 phone and it only works with google play music and musiXmatch apps
to me it doesn't really make the sound louder, it makes it better quality tho but im not an audiophile, i just care more bout 'loudness' as i don't use headphones much
When you install it, it asks to update the driver and it fails for me. I only tried the first 2 choices. What is the correct choice? This is for viper4. Downloaded the 4.3 version. I am running Pac Rom with elemental 1.5.

I used something on my last gen Nex 7 to bring up base and make it lost and it ended up blowing the speaker.
I think the 2013 is a huge improvement over the last gen. I mean we have stereo now and it sounds clean and sharp.
If you need rely good audio with this device then I would suggest headphones. They much better for gaming anyhow.

I thought it was a common problem on all the 2013 N7's, my unit is pretty good but has a static/hissing sound when at low-mid volume.
Still not sure whether to take it back over that as I may end up with more issues.
If you figure how many of these things they sold just because a hundred or so people say it is common doesn't mean squat. I have really tried everything to reproduce that and I have had other people listen to see if they could hear anything and there is nothing at all.

Mine are perfectly fine when cranked up loud - maybe yours are defective? Otherwise, get a small mobile speaker, they sound much better than stock The XMI X-Mini speakers are great attached to the nexus, and small to carry around.
No issues with mine at all, sounds prertty decent full volume here

I actually find the speakers to be better than I expected.
The speaker is not terrible but it's not the best. It all depends on the quality of audio you're listening to. The sound on my device can be very low or the volume and sound quality can sound perfect, or all depends.

What I would do is play the song paradise in Google music ( it came free with mine). Turn it up medium then high and listen too the quality. Mine has no problems at all so if it is crackling, it is most probably a defect.

I found volume on the three N7's I tried to be quite low both on the external speakers and out the headphone jack. I didn't experience any distortion, however.
Coming from the Galaxy Nexus where it's pretty low and under-performing, I found the N7 very refreshing to hear since it was pretty loud and decent.
No problems here. Was actually surprised with both the speaker and headphones after reading the thread about substandard audio components.

I've actually been impressed with the speakers, even at high volume.
General tip with any speakers and headphones : they have to be warmed up. They will all sound terrible out of the box but once they "warm up" they will sound better. The process can take weeks. Be patient with it

that's just bad ****in hardware design.
but thank u for the tip, i will try not to crank up my volume for the first couple of weeks. mine was good for a few days, then after a week, watched Wall-E at 70% volume and its cracking up. under 50% is safe. another week of i-dont-want-to-get-a-defect-replacement-instead, its still cracking full of distortion at anything above 50% volume. games, movies, videos. i couldn't stand it anymore. replacement should be coming tomorrow, we'll see.
I think the speakers are better than I thought in the first place.
I think the speakers are poor. My expectations weren't high but ive heard much better on other tablets. This is in regards to the quality as well as the amplification.
For youtube videos, etc its fine, for anything else you need a pair of iems or headphones
As expected for the size and price. I am happy with them. Check different positions. When I lie it on its back against my counter top it sounds much more full.

Mine was definitely defective. Not sure whether it failed with use, or if it arrived that way. Exchanged tablet for new - speaker sounds great. Will re-post if it fails with continued use.
They are very weak, I can barely hear them most of the time, but some games seem to be louder than anything for some reason, it's quite weird, not a huge fan of them.
No issues with my speakers. They are as good as they get on tablets.
So I just tested the galaxy S3 audio and it dwarfs in comparison to my voodoo sound nexus S audio. So basically it's the same thing again that you need to root the phone install some third party app or install custom kernel to get better audio just like how it was with nexus S. My friend is just a very basic user he hasnt even rooted the phone so it wont be happening. I just really dont understand what is the point of having such an audio chip when samsung is going to put a limit on it's output and the majority of users wont be able to benefit from it. Out of the box an iphone can satisfyingly drive pretty much any earphones, the galaxy S3 volume is just not enough.
Sound "quality and clarity" can only be so much important when the volume isnt enough. So a third party developer can convert the phone into the best phone for audiophiles but samsung cant? Thats just as bizarre as it gets and it continues to happen just like it was with the galaxy S/nexus S.
Guess the volume is enough to not damage your hearing.
About the quality... I find no difference between an ipod and an S3. Seriously now, what do you want from S3? Audio 14.1 with 2 earpieces? Come on, buy a dj professional equipment instead of a S3 if you expect that?

I dont have an ipod but the iphone 4S and my nexus S with voodoo are much louder than the galaxy S3 and donot damage my ears. Different songs need different volume and different earphones also need different volume, my JVC earphones are not very sensitive and need quite alot of volume which the S3 just doesnt have. The iphone and nexus S power it just fine. Mind you a non rooted nexus S also has the same problem so maye google is also incompetent? I dont know it just doesnt make any sense. Iphone lets you increase the volume to ridiculous levels out of the box, nobody complained about damaged ears.
All the sound mods i have met confuse loud for quality and just increase the noise in the sound file .
Compared to many users i experience via headphones loud at stock 5 and far to loud at 7 . That begs a question regarding sound level complaints and suggests that to improve sound level Earex is the first step .

Yo guys must be nuts cause the sound quality on the S3 is sublime.
yes you have to flash a new kernel but its not hard and the reason why its low volume is to not blast the ears of newbies that buy it.
Install the latest JB leak then flash :Siyah-s3-v1.6rc1.tar via odin.
then enter st tweaks and and go to audio and bump the audio from 57 to 60
then bump the speaker audio from default 0 to 1
then close st tweaks. and you job is done
You can also go into the music app and change the eq from default to dance.
then play some songs and you will hear a world of difference.

I just wanted to know if anyone can be kind enough to let me know how the N10 fares in general with it's audio quality and what audio chipset does it run.
Ofcourse I've created a test dump for the N10 but I don't know anyone on my side who has an N10. I would like someone to test it since this is the best place to refer to. Rest assured, bootloop free.

Yeah it seems majority of the Nexus devices suffer this. Infact all at this rate, considering the Nexus S was to involved without Voodoo. :crying:
I think with these newer devicesthe only way to get respectable sound is with Bluetooth or wired external speakers.
I love my ICS phone and listened to the Nexus 7 - great devices. But audio is weak.
What bothers me about the Nexus 10 audio is the speakers.
Even as a kid nothing screamed snake oil to me more than huge grills that hid tiny speaker cones.
That's what you get with Nexus 10 as well.
Behind each grill is one tiny speaker radiator at the top of the grill.
The rest of the long speaker grill is just for looks (or sales)

I personally think the Nexus 10 sounds pretty good with headphones. I believe it has a Wolfson WM1811 chip.
I have it plugged in with an ATH-m50 and a Fiio E5. Tweaked with the 10-band equalizer from Poweramp, and it sounded pretty good. It's certainly not the best I've listened to (the Cowon S9 sounds better still), but it's good enough to replace my S9 simply because the Nexus is much more hassle free in general.
The sound is definitely missing something though. Not exactly sure what it is.

To me the speakers on it are the best I've heard from any tablet since its front facing and it kinda has a slight surround sound effect since there is one speaker on each side of the tablet. Also the volume is loud enough to where nobody should have a problem hearing it and if you do get a hearing aid. The volume isn't so loud you can go deaf but its loud enough to where everyone in the room should be able to hear it.
The speakers sound pretty good with a bit of EQ. CyanogenMod's DSPManager is perfect for this since you can selectively EQ only the speakers.
Headphone quality is even better. Much, much better than the Galaxy Nexus and on par with some of the best Android devices.
Well I've sent a test build to a few members already let's see how that fares with comparison to stock loudness.

I've read here somewhere that the microphone isn't amazing quality.
I wouldn't be surprised if the N10 sound can be improved, but I was actually very pleasantly surprised listening to music, movies, etc on mine, as the sound blows away any other tablet I've used to date, blows away my 15" ASUS laptop (3 different models in our house, none of which sound as good as the stock N10). I've seen a few people complain that the size of the speaker slots is misleading, and somehow implies that the speakers are larger than they really are, as can be seen in tear-down photos. I haven't done any serious homework into this -- but I'm wondering if the elongated speaker grills actually server as vents, effectively turning the housing into a slot-vented speaker cabinet.
How do you plan (in detail) to improve the sound on this tablet? Are you going to just make it louder or actually do tweaks to improve the sound? If you are just making things lower, how do you plan on making it louder? A simple voltage increase? Or something more sophisticated?

Tweaks to improve the sound, since as you said the hardware is pretty good, louder is one thing if its needed, else controlled loudness is fine. In terms of libset, voltage increase is pushing it sounds alot more dangerous and doubt it will be tested :victory:

I sold my galaxy note to buy N4 with lots of doubts and fear but now I have it and I am sure it is wonderful and better than my gnote.
The battery is extremely good. I will put some screen shots here later but I am sure I have 6 hr screen on under heavy use and full wifi on.
I really do not want mess things up and change rom but I am not very happy with the loudness of the audio out.
Now I wanna ask from those of you who has changed rom that do you think cm 10.1 or other kernels have better sound loudness or not? Should I change rom only for this sake?

There are mods like XLOUDER that increase the volume. I haven't tried those since it's loud enough for me, though.
Audio out as in the headphone port or just in general over the speakers?
Because if its headphones youd be surprised what a good set will do. I had the "problem" with my HTC device through cheapo headphones but then I got a good deal on some triple-driver Ultimate Ears. HUGE difference. Now the phone cant be above half without hurting and the audio is considerably better since you arent maxing out the output of the phones.

What sets do you suggest from ebay or amazon?

I dont think there has to be anything specific but a set with multiple drivers or a 3mm or better driver would do it. I got some Ultimate Ears 600 series and those alone were probably 5-6x louder than some $20 Sony earbuds I had before. Retail they were $150 but I got in on one of those "dented box" sales for $50.

One of the things which hold me from buying this phone, is the speakerphone decibel levels.
In the past, I had some phones with very low speakerphone levels, which led for many missed notifications (it happened mostly with notifications and not phone calls, because notification sound is much shorter).
I've seen GSMARENA's comparison of spkearphone decibel levels (attached image), and was quite shocked to see just how quiet the LG G2 speakerphone is. It is 10 decibels lower than the Galaxy S4 (10 decibels translate to twice as loud, for human hearing).
So, in your day to day experience with the LG G2, do you find yourself in situations that you missed a notification because of the quiet speakerphone ? how much of a problem are we talking here ? can you compare the notification volume to your last phone and conclude this is a real problem ?

As for the LG, I'm running it for 2 weeks and still going good.
I did the hack as mentioned above and it's pretty much decent. Videos are pretty darn loud for me (MX player, using HW+ decoder).
Something to note is that the speaker placement is at the bottom. I feel that's the best place for a speaker on a phone. It will face out when you insert your phone headfirst. Also when laying on the desk, the speakers are not blocked (as opposed to the S4). All these help in delivering sounds more efficiently.
I've had the phone for a good 2 weeks now and haven't missed many notification or calls at all. The ringtones and notification tones that come with the phone are plenty loud.
Also, I agree with MasK about the bottom-facing speaker. It doesn't seem to get muffled at all sitting on a desk or even on a pillow on my couch, unlike my old RAZR MAXX.

You might say that I have been known to be a bit hard of hearing, but I have not really had any issues with the speaker or speaker phone with the G2. I have add these 2 apps:

This is what I did. Set the value to 65.

There's a ViperMOD as well and seem to get very good reviews. However, I could not get it to run. I've yet to troubleshoot it.
I find that picture hard to believe...the HTC one been getting BIG thumbs up for its speaker.
Will ViperMod work on T-Mobile variants? Can someone confirm?

Ok guys,
I have the LG G2 D802.
There are 2 speaker grills, one on each side of the Micro USB port on the bottom of the phone. I noticed that only the Right Speaker on the phone is working. The Left one is not. My question is, DOES THE PHONE HAVE 2 SPEAKERS OR IS THE SPEAKER GRILL ON THE LEFT JUST FOR SHOW?

btw buddy, dont you think that practically the volume of the speaker is a bit on the lower side? Also, imo the earpiece performance for calls is not the best possible like HTC One. Dont you think?

Yes you are right but each phone has it's + and -
All have weak points at some place

True, best part is, 802's positives weigh much more.
anyway any way we can enhance the speaker and earpiece without rooting?

Oh yeah,
There is some chance to increase that low volume level without modding device please?

FiiO e11 and a BOSE speaker in the backpack with car battery, you wouldn't miss a notification at all
