N3 TW DPI change - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Having been a flash'o'holic with my note 1 I really want to keep stock tw on the new note 3 for all the spen stuff. But I can't stand 340 dpi, is there going to be a way to switch this to at least 240 when we all finally get our notes? Or will it take awhile and involve custom sam apps to get this working? Failing that I fear I'll be rooting and flashing within the first month just hate everything blown up looking, this is the reason we buy big screen phones? For the extra screen space not a magnified look..

Chances are that many of the s-pen feature apps/functions will not work well with lower DPI... I'm just guessing from my experiences with both the GN1 AND GN2

This will be my first time purchasing a GN phone...so when you root it you will not be able to use the s pen features? It cannot be implemented into the ROM?

it can be in tw roms but not aosp roms. and he is saying that adjusting the dpi may mess with the s pen features since they are set up for stock standard sized tw

I understand what he was inquiring about...I just had a side question. Makes sense on both accounts...whether you mess with dpi on stock or not...could affect it.
thanks for answering

I forgot what xposed framework app it was, but after changing dpi to 240 or 270, you could set other stock apps (like clock, phone, s-planner, etc) back to the stock dpi for no impact.

Its called app settings i believe

I love xposed..... That is a must on the Note 3!

Agreed, 240 dpi rules

I used 240 dpi on my note 2 as well and that was very nice and worked perfectly with the spen.
But 240 will be to small on a 1080p screen (I run my s4 at 360 which is pretty much the same look) I guess everything will work just perfectly like it did in the note 2 @ 240 dpi. Looks the same

Stock dpi for the N3 will be 480. You can bring it down to 320 and it will be the same effect of going from 320 to 240 on the N2
And changing the screen DPI shouldn't affect the S-Pen features. From what I've read, The overflow feature it has is based on a sensor on the phone and pressing the button on the S-Pen. Every other input the S-Pen has will work fine as well.

Just use Xposed App setting after installing Xposed Framework .
Im running certain apps on 360 dpi without any problems with S-Pen features. Although I do feel that 360 is a tad too small on certain apps but again you can customize it for each app.

I too have just come from a note 1 and done something that was probably silly.
I rooted my note 3 and changed the build.prop to 260dpi with rom toolbox but when it booted the system ui fc's and I can't get anywhere.
After failing to open any apps, I went to recovery and wiped data, rebooted and dpi change has remained.
Is there anyway I can revert or at least get it working without flashing another rom? If it's the rom, can the stock one be picked up from anywhere?
* edit *
Also, the reactivation lock is set back to on. Not sure how as I turned it off to root. Now I can't seem to flash a custom recovery due to that I think. Any ideas?

Dude, YOU'RE DOOMED! Lol.
Do you know if you activated debugging mode and have your PC authorised at all? If so, You could pull the build.prop, edit it put it back and keep your fingers crossed.

Could you adb pull the build.prop, edit it, then push it back?

Okay guys summerizing, change the build.prop dont work. Only Xposed work until today?!

360 dpi for note 3 is awesome

happy with 320 on my note3 using app settings/xposed..no problems with spen.

[Q] DPI changes on official ICS?

Hi,
Has anyone tried changing the DPI setting under the official ICS release?? either to something above 160 (phone mode), or 160 or below (tablet mode)? did it work?
im reluctant to try it since i read somewhere that someone tried it on a galaxy s 2 and it hung on boot, and I dont have CWM recovery installed yet to do a backup (am guessing we need to wait for ChainFire to compile a kernel with CWM support in it...)
thanks
g
I tried 280 and 260, both the times I soft bricked and had to revert to CM9.
I used LCD Density modder, if that helps.
I tried the method outlined in this post, and now I am likewise at 240 on LPY without issue.
I run in 260 as well, used root explorer to modify the build.prop
160 to 239 cause systemui crashes. Dont know how to fix them

240 for me, used ROM toolbox
Dpi changer doesn't work with ICS (I don't think)
Change DPI is safe with Root Explorer or ROM toolbox, other apps can brick you ROM. 280dpi is ok, but if you set anything lower - you get force closes at many apps.

Thanks guys... i installed Rom toolbox pro, set it to 240, and its at least successfully rebooted... ill post if i get any probs, but its looking like a much more approriate size for stuff on this screen. Has anyone dared go to 160 to see if tablet mode works???
As another poster above, I tried a few settings below 240 and it caused mass fcs. 240 seems to be lowest available.

why wasted money when you can always do it manually?
root explorer/root browser ---> System/Build.Prop
adjust your LCD density to whatever you like. Edit both of them...

Rom Toolbox won't let you go back higher than 280 if you use the optimizer function with the slider.
Therefore you can use the build.prop editor (underneath the optimizer). Look for both entries ro.sf.lcd_density and change it 2 times manually to 320.
Exit and reboot

how about that for GB 2.3?
I got force closes on youtube at 240 dpi which I think is down to the dpi. Chrome seems to hate custom dpi. No other problems. Still, looking forward to a paranoid android for the note.
I have read that you should go into market and clear data after you change dpi otherwise it can get upset.

[Q] Density Change

Is it possible to change the density to a lower density like the Galaxy Tab 10 density?
And only until i reboot?
I ask because some apps display it very small (CHIP Magazine, Weekend Magazine, ..) because of the high density.
So i want to change the density and afterwards i can read the magazines.
If i am finished i reboot and all is back to normal.
Root is available.
DPI!
I used this "https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.marutian.dpichanger&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5tYXJ1dGlhbi5kcGljaGFuZ2VyIl0." To change DPI on my Nexus 10, Deafult DPI is 320 just incase you want to revert back to normal.
Remember not to change DPI "Numbers" From 320 to 100, Keep testing before you end up on one, Since this tread has nothing else to talk about. Let me know your DPI,.

Yes, but it does only FAKE the properties of a changed DPI, but does not really change the DPI from the tablet or phone.
And also if you change the the resolution.
The app means you have a lower or higher resolution, but it does not really change the resolution of the tab.
I need a real change of the resolution because the magazines are tiny in the middle of the screen.
It does not fill the whole screen because of the high resolution.

LCD Density / DPI Settings

Hi all, I've been rooting/flashing/customizing my EpicTouch4G for a while, just upgraded to the S4, got it rooted with no issues.. Everything is working perfect so far, getting some apps installed and its running great. I didn't realize the S4 comes at 1.83gHZ..
So, my question is this, I like using low DPI settings, and on my ET4G, stock TW was 240DPI, on the S4, stock TW is 480DPI. Does anyone know the lowest DPI the S4 can run with stock TW? On the ET4G, I'm sure 160DPI was the lowest setting stock TW would run.
Thanks for the help

361 is a nice DPI, try it out.
Been looking to change DPI on TW for awhile on the S4 - posted a thread about it but no one had tried yet. What are you using to change it? Manually editing the build prop? And what have you guys personally safely changed it to?

Keep in mind that in TW, the dialer will be off-centered.

Thanks for the post. Is 361 as low as it goes without getting fc's to start? On my E4GT, I went from 240 to 160 (TW of course, I really like 100 or even 85 on AoSP based builds)
The reason why I am trying to find this info out before I test is because on TW, I have set it too low and soft bricked, I wasent able to fix cause of a boot loop.. so I am trying to avoid that happening on my S4

Well, I don't run TW at all... I only changed the DPI on TW because I had the phone before Loki was released, so I don't know the minimum... I've gone as low as 320, which I found too small... 240, 160, 100, 85, even if it did work, would be so tiny it would be unreadable... DPIs that low are fold old school phones like S1 and Nexus S... Old, crappy screens... I found 320 too small, but it worked...

I think you have to be rooted to change dpi. There are several apps but they can soft brick you very easily. Best is what is mentioned above. Be rooted, install xposed framework, and install the "app settings"" module. From there you can tweak individual dpi for almost everything. I adjust the following to get good uniformity, systemui, launcher (whichever you are using) and settings. Works great on my devices. I don't have the SGN 10.1 yet but that's the plan. It also allows you to change just the font size or lock rotation for a particular app, or even force full screen.

Very true, I am on VZW so no custom ROM for me as of yet. I just got the S5 for a good deal. I am coming from a Moto X DE and LG G2. I miss both but I also like a few things with the S5. But the 480 DPI on this phone makes me feel like I'm running 640x480 on a 21" LCD.. Very sad that they cant allow different resolutions for large screen devices at the least.

Anyone found a quick fix to this issue at hand (misalignment on lockscreen)?
If so, which App Settings app would be used to control the lockscreen DPI? I'm pretty sure lockscreen was part of SystemUI but won't that change my system DPI as well?

Not sure if everyone already figured this out but setting the systemui to 480 in app settings does fix the lockscreen issue. You just have to make sure that you reboot the phone. Unfortunately systemui controls a lot of the things that I want to have the lower DPI such as status bar. I then had to set 480 for the camera and the incallui to fix them.

There is no fix for the lock screen. Samsung compiles all the firmwares with only one dpi in mind. To fix it someone would have to decompile keyguard.apk and increase all the values to the specific dpi. Pretty big project.
I wish the status bar and quicksettings were separate from the systemui then we could probably take care of them with the app settings xposed mod too
