weird brightness issue - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok, so try going to 0 percent brightness in a dark room and start like moving around the menus, or using Tapatalk.. do you notice it randomly gets more dim, or more bright, on its own correlating to how much stuff is on the screen? like, I was in the touch buttons display menu and as I moved up and down I noticed sometimes it's brighter, and sometimes it's darker. I think the dna kind of did this too but not as harshly as this.
it's not on auto brightness. I'm on 0, but i think I've noticed this at other levels as well. yeah confirmed i notice it ever so slightly on 40 percent. hard to notice since it's brighter, have to look close. easiest to see on 0.
care to give it a try and let me know?

it seems like it gets brighter when there's more white on the screen. when there's more gray or darker colors, it gets dimmer. seems to do it consistently on Tapatalk when going from like a thread full of white background and then going back to my subscribed which is only like 3 things, so 3 little white backgrounds and the rest is gray.. so it's dimmer there.

and when I pull the keyboard up to reply, I'm using a gray keyboard... so it gets dim bc the screen has more dark color on it.. when I drop it down, it's gone and the screen has more white so it's brighter haha

I haven't noticed any dimness or brightness. I have noticed a flickering of sorts on my call icon and home screen wallpaper. Maybe I'm going nuts or maybe its my eyes...doesn't bother me if its happening. Interesting though.

Maybe it has to do with that graphic ram thats on the display. They said its suppose to save battery. Honestly i thought ive seen this happening on a couple of review videos.

oh yeah? I'm wondering the same. at 0 brightness my dna would change brightness levels around and I noticed it often.. wasn't as hard of a change as the g2 though but perhaps you're correct with the gram!

It's called dynamic contrast and is present in all modern TVs and smartphones
Your TV set is probably CRT, hah?

I would think the constant change in brightness would mean sensors are constantly running and chewing up battery. But then again, I have no idea what I'm talking about

Lol u sound like me, then again i have no idea what im talking about. Yeah i was just guessing on the graphic ram. But i coulda swore on one of the vids i saw the phone was really bright and then it changed and was noticeably dimmer, let me see if i can find it, could have been auto brightness but in the same lighted area it was a huge change if it was. Do u have auto brightness on?

Mine almost flickers if I have auto brightness on,its very subtle but it's there

this. Maybe once its rooted we can find where that is defined... hopefully it is not something supper deep within the code and is something simple like a variable.

lmfao jerk nah man i have hdtvs... i've never seen that before.
do you know the explanation as to why it does it? I'm glad it's not just my phone lol. what's the point? save battery?

My G Pro have same problem too.
But i notice when only watching movies, and not always. weird

Here is how it is disabled on Tegra 3 devices. I'm sure there is just an easy of a way for qualcomms chip... we just have to find it after we get rooted

can't wait for root!
btw, there was a secret menu for the att version where you could turn off the dimming when the phone got hot. if we could get that menu maybe we could turn that

Yeah buddy.. i forgot to include my link.. like an idiot. Here is what i was referring to lol.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing as dynamic contrast, but it also sounds similar to some content-aware brightness settings included in some ROMs.

Does auto brightness even work on this phone? I will pull down the notification shade, uncheck auto brightness, put the brightness all the way down, check the auto brightness box and it does absolutely nothing. Anyone else notice this?
Upon further review, if I go to settings and display settings and check the box from there, it seems to work. Maybe it's just broken in the pulldown notification shade?

Yes I felt the same. There is absolutely no change i noticed when i set the auto brightness. I just set it to 30% manually. Not sure if there is a issue with the sensor or just the software..

Mine does and I'm not sure if it did the first few days or even if it is supposed to....
Thanks
It only does it if auto brightness is off.

I was just gonna post I found that out too.. Thanks now I know my device isnt defective...
Holy crap, that's awesome! Finding out new cool **** with this phone everyday!
Cool. Nice find with that one. I just use the power settings widget to switch between the set brightness levels (keeping it on the lowest setting).
This was a thread in the Galaxy S forum and I tested it to make sure it worked on mine a few hours ago
Great find, thanks.
I am getting use to touch wiz. I don't know why people don't like tw. It has some good feature s.

Wow, that's seriously awesome. Now I have no need for the automatic brightness, which always seems to keep the screen darker than I'd like.
This is pure awesomeness now that I know about this! I had just added the Power Control Widget so I could turn brightness up/down whenever I needed to. This is much, much easier and what I wanted since I can control everything else from the notifications already and faster.
My screen has randomly brightened or dimmed and I didn't know why. This explains a lot.

Same here. All of a sudden it would be to the lowest brightness level then it'd be the highest and I'd be so confused on why it kept changing.
@sl8125: People didn't like TouchWiz because the previous version of TouchWiz was awful.

Screen brightness

I have issues with the brightness constantly changing. It is extremely annoying. I believe I have all the settings to where it shouldn't change. Its on full brightness, dynamic and unchecked where it will adapt. It is extremely noticeable on light pages like the web or Tapatalk. This is my 3rd Samsung never had issues before. Thanks for reading

Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda premium
Already did thanks. There are 3 settings that affect the screen I think. Its driving me crazy
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, it's a phone wide thing that isn't affected by settings. Happen to me when I switch over to Chrome from a different white display. The whites change, even if every other setting is constant.
Basically, it's a known issue with no way to change it at the moment. Not sure if it continues in AOSP.

In browser screen flicker

Has anyone noticed how much both chrome and stock browser flicker. Since i spend a lot of time inside i don't really crank up the screen brightness. I noticed last night that when scrolling in the browser the screen will often flicker. Its driving me crazy cause I don't have a way to test on another unit. Im on at&t with a d800 can anyone else confirm this thanks. Once again it only seems to do this when the brightness is set relatively low, and auto brightness is set to off.
Sent from my LG-D800 using xda app-developers app
yes. it's that content adaptive brightness crap I'm always bringing up lol.. there's no way to turn it off. it changes brightness depending on what's on the screen. it's horrible at low brightness in the browser and anywhere in general.
my tip, use screen filter instead of dropping down brightness. this helps and you don't notice it. for example I leave my screen at 40 percent and put screen filter at like 35 and it looks almost like 0 percent brightness and I notice no flicker. this is only a temporary solution until kernel Devs get here because I believe the issue is in the kernel, bc disabling it on a software level does nothing.

Ok that's good to know.

Not sure if you're talking about the same thing, but check out my thread here for a possible solution.

[Q] Auto-Brightness Confusion

Can someone please explain how the auto-brightness works on this phone it seems to act a lot weirder than my galaxy nexus did. What does it mean when it talks about setting the baseline brightness and in what context? Do you use it? If so what brightness do you have it set to?
This phone has the worst auto-brightness of any device I've used.
I need to read the manual. I'm assuming the baseline is the minimum brightness, but it never seems to change when expected.
I chose to use a 3rd party app to manage it. Lux auto brightness works really well, and you can calibrate it any way you'd like.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
I have mine set to 40% on auto. I found the best way to decide the minimum brightness was to set it at a comfortable level in a dark environment.
To test this, set up your minimum brightness, then point the screen (ambient light sensor) at a light source, keep your eye on the screen and it'll gradually brighten. I've found mine to work pretty well and rarely have to manually override it, but the change is a lot slower than my note 2.

Get lux lite from the play store. It works great
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
Comfortable in a dark room for me is about 5%, unfortunately even in the brightest of sun it seems like the phone never turns its brightness up at all when on auto like this. Anything less than 50% seems to break auto brightness for my device and that is just sad. Even when it works when set above 50%, it takes 5 seconds or so to adjust which is just terrible and the brightness seems to still act funny about how and when it decides to change. It really is the worst auto brightness ever.
Whoops!

Thanks for the recommendation guys that app seems to work sooooo much better than the stock auto brightness so far. The stock auto-brightness is garbage on this phone. Seems like the stock setting either doesn't get bright enough or doesn't get dark enough.
I don't agree, either I have a working phone or others are broke, but this is the best autobright performing phone I've every used, after the hd2, galaxy nexus, note 1 and note 2. Its perfect according to the ambient light situation and is really fast acting

Yes the G2 has a very dim brightness on 1% and also with inverted colors in accesibility click the name not the on or off button to make it dimmer grab it about the bottom middle of that screenshot and drag it down untill you match the blue color on the status bar all the way on the bottom... it keeps your colors the same but your blacks are darker makes for an even dimmer screen... have taken it to a movie theater and get no complaints its as if ts not even on
One of the brightest displays I've used no joke first time I turned the brightness up to 100 my eyes started watering no joke.
Sent from my LG-VS980 using Tapatalk
I seldom feel the need to run the brightness above 85% except outside on a sunny day. If you are an auto-brightness user, Lux is practically mandatory. LG's auto-dimming logic is horrible. It's got a, maybe, ±20% range.
