HTC still cant iron out those build issues. - One (M7) General

My misses just got her HTC ONE for her upgrade as she likes mine.
She got the black one and i noticed they still have issues with the speaker grills not sitting right.
Love my phone and its been great ( performance wise and no issues technically ) and she likes hers, but I'd have thought by now they'd have ironed out these silly issues.
She hasn't noticed it and it's gone straight into a case so she isn't bothered, I'm just surprised about this.

They're only issues if you allow them to be issues. Seriously, it's only a issue if the grill is hanging off lol

Quality control is quality control. Don't get me wrong. I love HTC. But they should get their **** together if they want to be world beaters.

He is kind of right.
When you pay for a phone that's this expensive, you should be allowed to ask for perfection.
Although i don't let it bother me, i still sometimes see the grill and wish they had fixed it.

I just got my second One and it's in worse shape than the first One. The first was actually pretty good, build wise, I exchanged it for the camera issue. Now I have a phone with a couple of build issues and the camera issue is still there. I shouldn't have returned my first One

There is no such thing as perfection, so it might be quite difficult for HTC to deliver.

Although I do understand where you are coming from, people put these phones together. Unless the people are perfect, there's no way the phone is gonna be perfect.

TBH, though, they're not that far off. They really aren't. I wouldnt mind but they done the hard part spot on, carve the aluminium etc etc.
It woudn't take all that much to fix the grill issue.
My phone does have a slightly rough edge to the screen and the speaker grill a the top has the gap a bit. I just think to myself, let them dry longer or, use better glue, or a bit more of it and apply some even pressure around the edges lol.
For a company that has build a damn good phone, it aint rocket science.

The one is designed and manufactured to be as thin as possible. On top of that they also implemented their 'zero gap' design. If you read some of the teardown threads, it's assembled in a way that allows zero room for error. Taking into account the fact that most people who receive a One that they consider to be perfect don't usually post about it at all, I'd say the actual defects of the one are a much smaller percentage than they appear to be on XDA.
Where HTC really impresses me is the fact that they seem to be 100% willing to warranty any device with any build quality issue. Obviously they should, after advertising a premium device with no gap and superior build quality to plastic phones. However, what major companies should do, and what they really do are not always the same. They can not promise you a perfect phone, but they are willing to replace it until you receive on that satisfies you.
Where they fail, is with that replacement device. Any mass produced product is going to have defects, and some will make it past quality control, this is inevitable. But devices going to customers who have already sent in devices due to build quality issues should have added levels of quality control, to ensure no one gets two bad phone. That would save them a lot of negative publicity.

Just thought I'd update here. So far I'm going to be on my fourth warranty exchange in less than 3 weeks. The second I got had USB port issues. The one ingot today had this weird glue around the top speaker grill and the grill looked like it wasn't even on straight. And the top speaker didnt even work. The build quality was sub par. Not acceptable. Called right away and they are overnighting me another tomorrow. Hopefully this one is accetable. If not I'm done with HTC. Has anyone had some kind of glue type substance around the grills or where the gaps are. I mean why do they think they can send me this and call is acceptable. ?? Sorry I didn't like spending hours on the phone. Most of it was correcting and issue the first rep made by not even processing the order. Tmobile USA. Come on.

Dude I'm dealing with the same issue with tmobile, it's not htc it's tmobile sending out bad refurbished models I'm waiting on my third one and then I'm giving up. They don't seem to get it that the speaker grills have glue sticking out or it looks chipped inbetween the grill and plastic. If the new one I get is the same I'm going to take pictures and post all over tmobile support advising to people thats what tmobile calls acceptable. They suggested me going eip for a new phone, they just want money and don't seem to care that I paid in full for a faulty device, my defects didn't start showing up till after the first 30 days passed, and I bet they are going to lag on the update as well, situations like this make me hate these companies and there policies, they try to sound so cheerful over the phone but they don't understand that we don't deserve to be given broken devices over things we didn't break but sadly we can't do much to over power them they will just be like "again we are sorry for the inconvenience can we send you another" they make me sick

That sucks man. When I first opened the package I saw what at first looked like a scuff. Then I noticed it on both sides of the top speaker grill. I'd say that was the worst built phone I've ever seen. The grills didn't line up, the screen wasn't flush and it looked beat up around the sides. I've never had build issues with other phones. I agree with you. If this one today is bad I'll call customer loyalty and see what else they can get me. I'm not particularly picky but I'd have to be something within the same price range. I know they've offered alternative exchanges before. I think they try not yo as much anymore. 5$ every time you exchange adds up plus they charged me 7.99 for shipping of my charger that was defective. At the end of it all I'm going to see if they'll credit me.

Customer loyalty are the reps that you get transfered to when you want to cancel . they will do almost anything to keep you with the company. They are traditionally called retention but Tmobile calls then customer loyalty. I've had them send me a brand new phone just to keep my business. Although it depends on how long you've been a customer, and I've you have credits given in the past. I used to work for Tmobile years and years ago and used to shadow these guys from time to time.

No problems with the buttons. No gaps at all. Software is also running great. I was gonna call right away again if there were issues but I'm actually shocked they came through. Now to see how fast they can get 4.3 out.

Internal Screen Cracking

Overall I have had a great experience with this phone. It is fast, has great hardware, and even had some faith in Samsung for Froyo fixing some of the problems I was having with it. However, when I arrived at school today I pulled my phone out my pocket to check my text messages, and low and behold my screen is shattered internally. My phone does not have 1 scratch on it and has been babied like crazy. This is completely unacceptable for a ~$600 device meant to be transported in pockets and such. I don't have TEP but I will be up at Sprint raising hell until either I walk out of there with a new Epic or Evo.
Has anyone else had this issue happen or have any luck with Sprint fixing it?
Obviously while in your pocket it was not "babied". Phones don't magically break without a reason.

x2..not to raise any wild hairs, but you obviously bumped it up against something. Sprint will replace your screen, but for $35. And thats only if you purchased the Epic after they changed their insurance rules. If you don't have TEP and you bought the phone before that, I don't think there is anything Sprint will do for you. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, I worked in wireless sales for a little while..please don't believe you are going to walk into the store and just magically get swapped out for the Evo. You will get what you have, an Epic. The Epic is an overall better phone anyway, minus the amount of dev support.
Be polite when you go into the store, thats the best way to get someone to side with you.
For what's its worth for those who aren't MOD EDIT: LANGUAGE it was an obvious hardware defect as I take extremey good care of my s***. I got it replaced on the spot free of charge.
Flaming quote removed
I've been called worse, thanks for the compliment! ;D
Welcome to the forum, btw..you probably won't be here long!
What an ironic name you sport.
Congrats on your replacement, though, I guess not everyone's a cynic like us.
I think sprint honers the 1yr manufactures warrantee regardless if you have insurance or not. Just have to fall into that category of a defect or something.
I was voicing concerns over the build quality of the screen in my phone and asking if anyone else had similar experiences to find out if I am the only one this has ever happened too or if there are any known issues before going into the store. Instead people reply with smart ass emoticons . Pardon my frustration . And btw you guys must have a lot of faith in a company that mass produces millions of phones to not even consider the fact that maybe just maybe a sub standard panel was put into a phone. I take it none of you lived through the debacle that was the moment. So since no one else seems to have had any issues with a weak internal screen I shall let the thread die off.

I have seen this happen with other devices before. It's not always due to negligence.

Bottom Of Phone now Squeaky

Hey i have The black mt4g and the bottom of my phone started squeaking a few weeks ago and its starting to bug the **** out of me...Is anyone having this problem with any of the colors ?? And is there a way to fix this problem without sending it back??
Is it the buttons on the bottom that are squeaking? If so, that seems to be kind of a common problem on this phone. My trackpad is quiet, but the other four buttons and very loud. I wouldn't describe the sound as a squeak, but instead as an excessively loud click (compared to my friend's plum MT4G which has very quiet and easy-to-push buttons). I never complained to T-Mobile about it though, since I have the good screen and good eMMC.
Its not the bottons .....its the bottom of the phone itself

I was very friendly and calm, and told him my reaction is wtf and that I'm losing faith in htc.

I've gone through about 5+ MT4G's. They all had some sort of issue. I guess the QC wasn't that good with this phone. I've gotten to the point where I just don't care anymore. As long as it functions correctly and doesn't look like total crap. Add to the fact that there's a good chance that the phone will eventually get scratched/dinged up. Glad I got insurance.

That's pretty much my attitude too. I still take care of it, and by some people's standards I "baby it", but the quirks and obvious manufacturing flaws I just ignore now. The thing is, although some HTC phones have had problems (like the Incredible screens changing part way through production), the MT4G was a complete flop in the quality department. I wonder why.

Should I return my Nexus 7 ???

Hi,
I am wondering if I should exchange my device. There is a minor problem with the screen. It is not really a detached screen as I haven't notice any pop up so far. Yet, I can hear little cracking sounds when I pressed the area around the front facing camera. So, what you guys think I should do? Also, if I get a new device, will all my downloaded apps be there once I signed in my google acount?
Great thanks!!!
I'm not sure if you should return it but if you think it could get worse it wouldn't hurt, and once you get your new tablet you can restore your Google account with all the apps you have back onto the new one.

Does it really bother you? If it does, exchange it. If it doesn't, keep it.
Or to put it another way, would you have ever noticed it if people here didn't point it out? You could get a perfect device when you exchange it, could get one with a different problem.

If it's not perfect return it. There is no reason to live with it. That's what the warranty is for.

It doesn't bother me much. As I said, the area does not pop up and the creaking sound comes out only when I press the area on purpose(wont't touch the camera at all). I expect the product to be perfect even it is 250. Just wanna see if you guys will bear a minor defect or returning it.
I doubt you would've noticed if you hadn't read about it here. Don't nitpick as long as it works.

I disagree with the "don't nitpick" statement. Did you paid 250+ dollars for a tablet that squeaks and crackles if you touch it a certain way? That is what a warranty is for. Its your choice to take advantage of your warranty or not, however, just the fact that you asked should answer your question. I had one dead pixel and returned mine for a new one and the second one is perfect. If it wasn't I would have likely had my money refunded and waited until the hardware kinks were worked out. There is always risk involved when being an early adopter of new tech... but the risk isn't that you have to eat a defective device. It is personal preference but when I spend money I worked to earn and purchase a device brand new I expect it to be perfect out of the box. If it is a manufacturer defect then use your warranty and get a device that doesn't make you want to ask if you should return it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Be careful with this one. If the screen itself is fine and doesn't raise, and you are suffering no other problems, I would keep it. The replacement could just as easily have the screen raise problem.
The creaking is the casing I believe, if it's not in area you will be pushing lots in daily use I would just keep it.
I've had plenty creaky gadgets before, and I found a neat trick. Get some silicon based lubricant spray, put some on your finger and rub your finger round the contact surfaces between the casing and the back cover, including all the clips etc. Works 100% of the time for me.

Then just return that one and get a new one. I really would not care if I had to send back 100 Nexus 7s to get a perfect one. It also keeps you from getting it too if you think about it. I know it can be a hassle sometimes, but that is what a warranty is for.

Thank you for your comment and I agree with you so much. I am just afraid if I exchange another one that is worse than my first one. But you are right, newly developed product is not an excuse. I also worked hard to buy myself this little toy and I don't want to play with it with special care. Since it is just the fourth day of my purchase, I will keep it for couple more days to see if it is actually a problem to me.

Should I get this phone?

I no I no....this post is gonna receive lots of bias info but I still wanna give it a try and I hope people r honest. I have read all over in these forums, there are lots of threads like this but at points it seemed people were overly sarcastic about everything.
My contract ends in a couple of weeks. I'm gonna be switching to tmobile as its hella cheaper. Now putting specs aside, I no they are great, how is everything else in the phone.
My primary concern is the glass back. It seems like everyone is split among the issues-some have already shattered it and others haven't.
Anything else I should no before setting my mind on which phone I should get?
Thanks

Hardware is great, price is great. It appears that build quality is VERY inconsistent seeing as most of my friends and myself have seemingly perfect units, but there are still a billion new RMA threads every day. To protect the glass back it's safest to get yourself a case. If, like me, you don't like using the phone with a case on then try a pouch case to protect it in your pocket but which allows you to use it 'naked' when you want to. Mine hasn't shattered yet although there are some minute and unnoticeable scratches on the back glass; they can't be seen unless in the perfect light.
I have this phone for a few months now and I absolutely love it! It's fast it's super handsome ... it is very unique!!!
Personally I didn't have any problem with the glass... except a little scratch which I don't know what happened!! My problem with the glass is that it's super slippery! It sometimes moves even on flat surfaces like coffee table...! 2 week ago I ordered some skins for back of my phone from here:
http://dbrand.com/submodels/nexus-4/
My phone looks even better with this, looks very luxury! It has a better grip now and doesn't slip away like fish! I'm using screen protection on gorrila glass also just to avoid taking any scratch...
I didn't drop my phone on a hard floor but I did drop it on carpet and one time I kicked it and it hit the wall! Nothing happened thou
If you like taking pictures with your phone I have to say the Camera isn't the best specially in low light situations but it's not the worst either...
I like the screen better than Super Amoled cause colors are more natural but I gotta say it looks a little washed out sometimes! It could be more colorful, you can improve it with custom kernels if you are planning to root...
Everything else about this phone is 10/10... battery life, smoothness, update support, appearance and ..... I'd give this phone 9 out of 10
I was seriously considering this phone also a couple of weeks ago. Posted my thoughts on XDA and the guys convinced me to buy it. One of the best decisions ever. The phone looks stunning and the build quality is excellent on mine. So far I managed to avoid scratches by keeping the back screen protector on and putting a case on it straight away.I haven't rooted mine yet because you will get the fastest updates from Google straight. However if you do want to root it there will be a variety of alternatives available (maybe an Ubuntu OS later). So trust me it is a good phone I will give it a 9.5/10 minimum.
Don't mean to troll..still with vzw. And hella jelly of u assholes...DNA is Aiight tho...on topic was I'd buy it if I could... Might anyway!!!!

I waited to buy my n4 for a while, I mean the shortage helped but still I waited. Expandable storage being the biggest reason and the geek in me wanted to see what else would come to the market to rival the n4.....I wish I had pulled the trigger earlier. The phone is phenomenal! Best phone I've owned by far, still wish storage was expandable....I'm annoyed with Google for that and their dumb explanation, but other than that I love my phone! I got myself a heavy duty case just in case....so far so good!
Did I mention that I love this phone with all my heart lol

How loud is the rear speaker during music playback? I'm a music guy not a camera guy.

Check out this video, sound isn't the best but it's still quite loud. The quality can be a bit tinny at times but normally it's OK. The biggest issue with the speakers for me is the placement as when you put the phone down on a flat surface the sound is entirely muffled (and I mean entirely, there's almost nothing coming out).
Its the best phone for the value of any smart phone and if you are going TMobile pre-paid check out Straight Talk, its basically the same service but $15 a month cheaper.

Just a comment on this, there is an idea of a "self-selection" bias. This is a forum to discuss the phone and when are people most likely to discuss something? When they have a complaint. There are likely millions of perfectly good Nexus 4s out there with owners who are blissfully unaware of what XDA is (or even what RMA means).
If you go into any forum and base your picture on complaints in a product forum youd think everything was garbage. Look at Apple forums, youd think Iphones and Ipads are nothing but terrible batteries, rattles and light bleed.
The reason your phone is good is the same reason my phone is good. The vast majority of Nexus 4s are quality.

Great for music, it shocked me how great it is for that purpose....its definitely gaining ground on iphones. Franco kernel and for a music player i went from power amp to vanilla music player but lately I've been really feeling emersys 3d music player...best audio I've heard so far through my headphones, gonna mess with it a lil while longer to test for bugs if im still happy with it I'll buy the premium version.

If you have to ask, then you don't deserve this phone. Go and get a Samsung Galaxy phone.

This is realy a great phone, it is fast and fluid, esasy to root and restore, no hassle with unlocking bootloaders and loosing warranty. A very good screen and very active development and a descent price for the device. I didn`t regret buying this phone for a second.

T-mobile is a bit like the mafia when it comes to the contract - be sure you are ready to make a long-term commitment

I would save the extra money and get the phone without contract and go with something like straight talk or t-mobile's
Prepaid plan.

What do u guys mean? How is it like the mafia? It's a two year contract and when it ends, it ends?!?!?!?!
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda app-developers app
Dunno what they mean but its still always a better value to get it from the play store, then you are not locked into the contract. You can use ST as an MNVO and get the same signal you would with T-Mobile but for $25 less (comparing to the contract plan) a month. If you do the math youd realize that the contract route costs more money.
Oh I see. No I'm getting a family plan and I get a 12% discount through my school.

One of the best phones I've owned. IMO: Pros: IPS, the feel, size (fits well on my hand), jb is smooth. cons: miss the home button from the iphone and spend too much time on xda.

Defects of HTC One

Hi pals. This is my first post in this forum and hope many will follow. I'll get straight to the point.
I've been away from XDA for quite some time and haven't followed HTC One forums. Today, I looked through few pages but couldn't actually find what I was looking for, a thread of all the defects of the phone. When I first bought HTC One X I did a thorough research on the phone and keeping everything in mind I went for the phone. I knew every single defect the early batches had so I got a right phone back then. The problem is, I don't really know what hardware defects are there in the early batches of the phones being shipped and I'm really in a mood to get one as soon as next week.
Further, the price of HTC One in my area is at $860 and it's something I can't comprehend. The price is $575 so with little alteration it should be around $600 max. One of my friends is in States these days and he'll be back next week. I'm gonna ask him to get One for me on his way back. I need to know are there any defects in the phone? I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EXCHANGE OR CLAIM FOR WARRANTY ETC so I need something solid. The price of the phone is not going down soon here so I have to get it from the US through my friend. But I don't wanna end up with a defected phone. Please the users of HTC One and everybody else who knows write me here if there's something.
If you still are unable to understand what I mean then have a look HERE. This is what I want.
Regards

1. You obviously can't read . he is asking for a master list of all known defects so he can check for them before the phone leaves the store. He doesn't care what your phones condition is.
2. OP needs to just read thru the forum and compile his own master list instead of relying on others to do the legwork for him... Dont be lazy

Ever heard that if you don't have anything positive to say, then don't say anything at all? The OP is only trying to help.
On mine OP, I have 1 dead pixel at the top left (not enough of an annoyance to swap the handset) I've noticed that where I've been pulling out the charger, the plastic seems to have raised up a bit and also when using for a while it gets pretty hot but I think this is just down to the metal casing.
Other things I've heard is the capacative buttons being unresponsive at times, a few camera issues that seem to have been sorted with an update and the gap issue mentioned above.
Other than that I can't say I've got any huge problems.

Almost no problems here, the bottom part of the volume button is ever so slightly raised higher than the top one. Although there is some game lag with games such as doodlejump, temple run, temple run 2, jetpack joyride. Overall this is the best gadget I've ever owned and I've owned lots

As far as the problems concerned,
tiny gap on top or bottom of the phone(about 15 - 20% of the phone)
Unresponsive back button(most of the handset)
dead pixel(5 - 10% of the phone)
Less than a day(12-14hrs) battery life(i think no problem after few cycles)
contrast of the screens are varying on different carriers(not big issue)
there is already one thread that is discussing these issues.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2247601
No gaps, the white plastic bezel around the phone is a good spot to check around, mine has what looks like a crack through it, and a few flaws. Pretty decent light bleed in the bottom right as well.
Comin guys this gap issue is way overblown.
After reading this forum about the gap issue, and the screen is not flush enough issue, I was scared to order one. But I did anyway, and my dev edition came in perfect condition.
If it weren't about reading people complaining about the gap issue, I wouldn't have noticed it or try to look for it. And when I did, I saw this mini tiny minuscule gap only on one corner, you can't see it with the naked eyes, you have to slide you finger in there in order to feel it. I was like noway I am returning the phone because of this.
I didn't even bother to download a pixel tester to see if there are any dead pixel, to my naked eyes I can't see any.
Enjoy the phone , I am sure you will not keep it for more than 2 years before another one comes out and you decide to upgrade.

I never noticed it before and kinda wish I was still ignorant about it. I did have to pull a small hair out of the gap the other day, but now my skinomi invisible shield covers the gap. I'm also having trouble with is the back and home button not responding all the time, but then I'll push it like 10 times in a row and it will always work. I think it's a software issue because it seems to only happen in certain menues. Has anyone else noticed that? If this continues to annoy me I'm going to have to switch to the s4.

Latest firmware upgrade fixes button sensitivity issues. Certain makes of screen protectors don't help either.

Anyone have light bleed from the capacitive buttons?
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
I am using 1.29.1540 and I do not have issues with the capacitive button.
Sometimes, I press it and it does not respond. My trick is to use the palm of your thumb not the tip, so that you can cover more area when pressing the button.

Why do we need two threads about issues with the HTC One? We'll just attract trolls.
By the way, defect means fault that does not meet the original spec. All defective HTC One devices should get replaced under warranty.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I just cut holes in my screen protector and the response problem seems to be completely cured.
My opinion based off what I experienced with this issue is that the screen protector cut off some sensitivity plus touching the back or home button and part of the screen at the same time is what caused this problem.

Common defects have been mentioned in this article. A survey/blog was carried out.
