Making android more accessible to disabilities - Hardware Hacking General

I am currently working with clients with severe physical disabilities, one of my clients has been given a Samsung 10" tablet which he loves using. However due to his disability it is proving difficult, He currently used a 'dynavox' to communicate.

in the first picture you will notice two joysticks, the one with the golf ball on steers his chair the other is his mouse for his dynavox this is a usb connection. The problem comes with the 'mouse' click, this is achieved by the green pad under his right arm in the second picture, this is plugged into the dynavox separately.
Im hoping the people here can assist me making android more accessible for my client.

So the joystick works with the tab but he's not able to click using it?

No, the click comes from touching the green pad. It goes into the dynavox via the mic socket

There are other issues like icon size etc but these can be overcome, root unfortunately is a no go atm due to it being so new from his parents

You might have better luck in a different forum. I was thinking of moving this to the Android software and development forum. Is that okay with you?

Problem isn't with android per say. I say it's hardware. Modifying a mouse.
I would take apart a usb mouse (trackball or joystick) and separate the button actuation mechanism and route that to a pad for his lap to use for the button and mount the movement where he wants for the mouse.
Does that make sense? Or do I need to elaborate my explanation?

That makes sense, i think i can find an old spare green switch to play with.
My next issues will be with keyboards i think. Most android keyboards that I've come across are more designed for people with fairly good eyesight and dextrous thumbs, can anyone suggest a large lettered keyboard?
I'm sure I'm going to come across a few more issues as i go :banghead:

Found what they call an adaptive keyboard. But the oversized trackball mouse on here would be a good idea since dexterity is an issue.

Update : it looks like it's going to be a modded joystick. My client used to use a trackball but no longer has the dexterity to manage one successfully. The same can be said of the external keyboard.
We looked at 'big launcher' which looks nice and had icons about the right size but seems to be geared more towards phone use than tablet use so I'm considering using uccw for a larger icon sets on his home screens, these would be an advantage as he would be able to touch the hotspots with his knuckle as well as using his button on bad days.

Cool man. Keep us updated with pics. I want to see how it turns out. Would be something good to share, maybe someone else can use the setup.

Just curious as to how this is coming?

At some point of time, you will have to change the dpi, and go opposite the usual direction. I.e. Change dpi to more higher values and force phone landscape mode.

@a.cid in trying to avoid root if i can, dpi changes have crossed my mind. @mark manning finding a controller that is a suitable size is tricky atm, he does like the idea of actually being able to touch the icons though. Going to request a uccw skin in the skins thread as soon as we've worked out which apps be will use lots. It's going to be a little slow, communication can take a while as he has to type out his responses, also getting to find the time to work with him when I'm at work is tricky, he's a busy busy lad what with horse riding, boccia, youth club etc

When I can't answer any of your questions, as a parent of a disabled child, thank you for looking at Android. I'm so sick and tired of people saying that iPads are the ONLY answer for for what you are trying to do. I've had some nasty flame wars where I've been kicked off email groups because I've asked why not Android.

ClickDot© - a new UI for Android (Update: 08/02)

Right. So, on request from a few users below, I shall be giving a very broad description of what clickDot is, and I shall be updating this post with details over the next few days.
Let me just state before I begin: I am not looking for any testers at the moment, so please, don't waste your time asking to test this. In time, I shall pick a handful of people to help me test parts of the program. Let me also ask that you guys do not ask for a release date - not even I know the release date yet, and I cannot commit to anything. I am a university student, hence I also have other priorities to see to. When I can work and update you guys, I will. Also, for those wanting to know what will be required to run this UI, you may take a look in the FAQ section once I've posted it.
So, back to the description. What I found in my personal experience is that, especially with typical home launchers like LancherPro, ADW, the original Android Launcher or anything of the sorts, is that information can become cluttered. You often need a single widget to display a certain piece of information, and for those who like to have multiple bits of information shown to them simultaneously, find themselves with cluttered home screens that have no consistent theme or look.
Where clickDot differs from most UI's is that it only shows the cluttered information on demand (Pictures will follow to illustrate the idea). The initial home screen of clickDot will only contain a simple bit of information in the center of the screen, mainly about your current surroundings, such as:
Current weather (pictures and possibly animations)
Current date and time
Current temperature
Moon phase (shown during night time)
Missed emails, sms' and calls
More to follow...
Click to collapse
All of the above will be shown in a relative manner, that being all fitting into a set theme and look.
If you click on the center of the weather image (Better description and images to follow), a drastic change in the UI will occur. Everything mentioned above will scale away (disappear, with the exception of a few bits of information, mainly being time and date) and a circular disc will appear. The disc will be broken into segments that will contain links to certain other applications and sections of Android. So far, the list of applications that will be developed and built into the UI, are:
Facebook
Twitter
Phone
Messages
Email
Click to collapse
The idea of the disc is to give quick access to not only common applications, but information from these respective applications as well. If a segment is clicked, the disc is shrunk to a small circle with the icon of the selected program (hence the dot part of clickDot). The dot then moves to the bottom of the screen, and the respective application is displayed. Once again, images will eventually follow to make this easier to understand.
EDIT: I have not been able to finish a promo image of the launcher (time is really tight), but here are the weather images I have created so far. Some of them need work still, but this is what I have at the moment. During the day, the sun will always be displayed, and during the night, the moon will always be displayed (as the relevant phase). All other weather images will be layered on top to show the relevant weather. Here is the image:

Well you've just created a thread to type "coming soon".
Just give us the basic things, then give the details later.
What is ClickDot ?
I like this thread. This guy is on the ball hes so ahead of the ball that the details are simply the details will be here soon. But on a seriously note it sounds interesting. I like the name.
"coming soon" threads are against the rules on xda, especially when they are lacking any details at all.
I would not be surprised if you find this thread locked soon.

Thanks all for your 'kind comments'
The "coming soon" part of the thread was simply due to the fact that where I thought I had time to write up the post, I ended up being dragged off to other plans. That said, I shall have a meaningful post up in the next hour or two
I'm hoping you guys will enjoy it, and please, feel free to comment and provide input.
MrP.
EDIT: As requested, an initial post to briefly describe my idea. More detailed description to follow soon.
i am very intrigued to see what this has to offer, the name sounds cool
No offense, but i really wish developers would actually develop something before releasing info about it. It's getting very tiresome reading "coming soon!" threads. Most of the time the UI never actually gets completed.
Sounds like an interesting approach but I would need to be able to add sections and items to the DOT before I would be willing to adopt.
I pretty much try to organize my phone into the following categories.
Phone
Voicemail (I use Google Voice)
Email
Messaging
Location
Media
Internet
Social
App Launcher
Unfortunatly LP Pro only has 7 screens so I am up for a new UI that will allow me to do that.
Hope to see screens soon!
Although you do raise a good point, Meltus, which I've seen happen countless times, and although even me, as the developer cannot guarantee that this UI will be fully developed and released in good time, I have to point out one simple fact:
As a developer, I find constructive criticism and commentary on my work a blessing in disguise. If I incorporate the requests and criticism from the community as far as possible into my work, I will hence create a product that is attractive in the sense that it's close, if not exactly what the community wants. Developing the product first could mean a lot of work going back and redoing parts to overcome problems and/or highlight points that I have overlooked.
In my eyes, this is a community. No where in my thread title did I state that the UI has a guaranteed release, or a Beta available, or a release date already. It's simply a post describing my idea to allow the community a chance to input into it before I create a final product, which I would like to finally have.
On a side note, I think this "coming soon" story that was originally in my first post has gone too far. It's got nothing to do with the fact that I'm spamming or trying to build hype, it simply was due to the fact that I had to leave for uni earlier than expected, and could not finish what I was typing up. Hence, I posted "coming soon" instead, and when I got home after uni, updated the post with the finished details, which, isn't even complete yet. Just clearing that up.
@Asphyx - thanks for your input. I haven't given too much thought into the customizability yet of the circle/dot, but it is definitely on the to-do list. I feel the same as you - the user shouldn't adapt to the UI, but instead, the UI should adapt to the user. Let me see what ideas I can come up with, and I'll get back to you. So far, what I have in mind is that the circle/dot will be divided into 12 segments. I might have segments that cannot be changed and segments that can, or I might have them all editable. Where I do not have a separate application developed yet for, say, Media, it will launch the Android default. What I'm also planning on doing is creating a system where you can create as many home screens as need be that you can use to add widgets, and then create a link to these separate home screens in the circle/dot. For example, if you have widgets that you use to view Media information, you can create a panel that is called Media. You can add and edit the widgets on this panel, and you can access it by clicking a corresponding link in the circle/dot. That might appeal to those still wanting to use widgets.

Sorry, i didn't mean to question your ability or commitment to the project, i'm very aware that some projects just fall by the wayside every now and then and never get completed, which is no fault of anyone.
I fully agree with having community input, i just meant that maybe a photoshp "mock-up" or screenshot would help move things along tenfold.
That way the community can see what the final product may look like and can offer constructive criticism. Getting the code down is all well and good, but the aethestics are what makes a good UI amazing.
Writing what your app will include can be done by anyone (again, i'm not questioning your ability) but showing how these features will be implemented will get a lot of people interested.
@Meltus - Duly noted. Being a uni student, time is often not on my side, but I shall whip up something and hopefully have it up by tonight.
Thanks again for the input,
MrP.
I am really waiting for this!! Looking forward to see it soon!
I think if someone's screen is "all cluttered-up" it's their own fault. My Droid X has the home page and 3 screens to the left and 3 screens to the right. I'm assuming most Android devices are somewhat similar. If you've got those ALL filled, I would love to see some screen shots LOL. Only thing I don't like is not being able to set the icon spacing; I can only get 4 icons in a vertical column, it has room for 7.
Granted, this UI is intriguing and may prove interesting. It might be cool to have a UI with just ONE screen...this "dot" idea. I can see it as some type of "fanned" menu or a wheel you can spin to get to items. Like if you long press "Media" the wheel (or dot") can open up "News, My RSS feeds" etc.
Like platters of a disk drive..you see one "flat" wheel, but 20 more are underneath. Especially if you can "flick" the top "wheel", it folds in 1/2 and you see the wheel underneath and can spin it and so on for remaining wheels. Like a stack of CD's you buy...you can have hundreds of virtual wheels
This could get interesting.
Thanks Rootstonian for your comment.
I think you've described it the best so far - trying to incorporate as much of the UI into one screen as possible, and constantly change it according to what you're viewing.
To be honest, I didn't imply anything about multiple disc layers, but now that you've brought it up, I quite like the idea. I shall see what I can do about incorporating it into my design. It could really prove useful, especially for things like common settings (on/off switches).
Shall work on this and get back to you guys.

Gripes... ICS more like iOS?

Ok so I just switched from CM7 on wonderful Gingerbread, to this ICS gabbage since CM7 isn't supported anymore by atinm I figure I would switch....
Well what the freak... i'm just gonna make a small list and correct me if i'm wrong on any of this...
First off, why is it anytime I download anything from the market I automatically get a shortcut on my home screen. I'm sorry I have an app drawer, if I was dumb enough to want my screen to always look cluttered I would have bought an IPhone to begin with.
Second, whats with the widgets now... They are joking right? What was wrong with holding down the home screen... It was more simple... Now I go into my apps and see there is a danged column for widgets. Stupid or what?
Third is messaging... At least in gingerbread I could change the background between black and white. Now it's blistering killer white.. Who said everyone likes white!?!?! Must be an apple thing.
Fourth.. I cannot, cannot cannot seem to get rid of the Google Search bar at the top of my main page. WTF I don't want want you there, go away!!!
To me it seems like ICS is trying to be something like Apple... Why I don't know, and I don't like it... but at least the GPS locks in a second or two everytime...
sir, i will say this once. and once only.
use the search button.
1st off, there's a option in the market to stop the shortcuts from happening.
second, just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean others don't either. I LOVE it. and i'm sure theres more that like it than there is that don't.
thirdly, You're on android go find yourself another messaging app if you don't like the default.
fourth, Not sure if it still works but settings>apps>google search> disable should do it.
1. There's an option in the android market for the new apps installed not to go to your home screen.
2. The only way to solve this is to use a 3rd party launcher.
3. I really don't know what to tell you here... Try another messaging app?
4. In the preferences, there's an option so the Google search will not be on your home screen.
Well jwleonhart,
It's more of your poor piss attitude, calling ICS garbage and other stuff like that.
But seriously, if you searched any ICS topic, you would have found that messaging app, you would have found out how to disable the google search bar, and you would have found out about another ICS launcher named Nova that has the hold for widgets feature.
Ever heard the phrase if you don't have something nice to say, say nothing at all... Keep it to yourself bro.

Ever heard of hypocrisy, which is exactly what you are doing right now. If you have nothing nice to say, then don't start a thread calling ICS GARBAGE. Also, in a thread about how great our SuperAmoled screen is you call it sucky compared to other phones. Does not sound like that is particularly nice.
Seriously, xrider66 is much more right in his rant than you are.
This thread is the best.
I dont like a lot of things about ICS either, but what the hell does anyone give a damn about my opinion. A lot of people fail to realize that what THEY think, is not what EVERYONE thinks.
This is funny ----->

So to snowball off of this point of yours, who said everyone likes inverted?? ignorant.
OS features/framework are calculated, and at least attempted to be based on majority appeal. why the hell would they release something that nobody likes? the reality is, they cant make everybody happy, all they can do is try to make as many people happy as possible.
Google didn't become a powerhouse by accident.
your OP sucks, it can pretty much be simplified down to "wahh wahhwahh wahhhh...fix everything for me and tailor everything to my liking!". YOUR type of attitude is the type that has trashed the Vibrant forum, and is precisely why devs HATE us. Youre the type who jumps into a ROM thread and says something like "can you please make the notification text yellow, it would go better with my theme. also, my phone is laggy, can you please fix this?"
if you dont like something, dont use it. i flashed ICS this morning, gave it a fair shot, its not up to my personal standards so i reverted. wow, that was hard.

For a few things I did search for the shortcut to the market and didn't find anything until the answer here.
Second, i'm simply asking a question and seeing how other people feel on that subject also. I've seen Nova and I just am at a loss personally and from what a few others have said, why the widgets would be squashed in with the apps, this isn't really a tablet..
I was A) looking for answers to my questions, and B)looking to see how others felt.
I didn't come on here to go "Whaa whaa" either, i'm simply stating things I see..
Who said everyone wants a black MMS? Nobody said that... but who said everyone wants white!?!? At least with Gingerbread there was the OPTION to change it, why not KEEP that option instead of DO AWAY WITH IT? I do kinda have a point there right? They deleted a feature instead of adding one in that sense.
If this whole thread is gonna turn into an arguement it may be better that this thread just be closed... Children run around on this forum all too much. Everyone has to open their mouths and turn a topix into an arguement.
And I said our AMOLED screen is outdated and old compared to newer phones. It is, it's old... face a fact.

Galaxy Note HUGE S-Memo bug/problem

Following clip is not mine but I advice everyone to watch what's happening...as this is unacceptable and has to be spread around until it reaches Samsung so they can fix it!
Basically, when a drawing/memo in S-Memo (a vital Note app) contains too much lines/information the whole thing takes almost a minute to open and even worse; when it's saved, the app crashes!
See for yourself:
(i'm a brand new member who just tried to put a youtube link to this post and aren't allowed yet, can a mod allow this please, as i think it's important to share this important information, thanks)
(btw, this is the title on youtube: Samsung Galaxy Note - S Memo is just for Memo)

well you can fill the screen with one or two large strokes if you wanted but as you see in the video it's about lots of single strokes/points, which adds up to the file size of the memo, as opposed to fewer (large strokes)
could someone replicate something with a high stroke/point count just as in that video and report?

thanks a lot for your effort though i see that you also did a lot of long scribbles *without* lifting the pen nearly as much as you would do if you had to fill the screen with hundreds of points (or short strokes) like you can see in the original video...
there clearly is a big problem with the way the uploader's Note handles that "point-heavy" drawing...
i suspect that until now not a lot of people made (or reported) a problematic drawing were lots of *seperate* events (points) are being drawn, that's why i want to bring this out and it would still be important that someone would replicate a drawing consisting of a whole lot of *seperate* points/lines...as seen in that original video, as again; there is clearly a big problem going on in that video!

like i said, the uploaded video is not mine though i'm in for a note, that's why i'm concerned...
and since you don't seem to have problems i'm still wondering what could be wrong with that note: certain colors? pen type? thickness? a combination?
it's really strange and i really pity that person, who has to wait a minute each time to open a memo and can't even save afterwards...
it looks software related so it's hard to imagine there is a problem with the uploader's hardware...
Its probably an old ROM. S-memo does get updated from time to time.

am having similar problems with mine, and to tell you the truth its bugging the crap outta me, ive been sketching a picture since the last few days (just a few minutes per day) and most of the time when ive finished and i try to save it, the memo crashes and i end up having to redo everything that i did, all over again, if im lucky only once if not, sometimes thrice or more...which sucks !
Never had that problem. But here's a fix:
Get sketchbook mobile, a real app for drawing/sketching.

but still this problem sucks !
So, I fired up S memo for the first time and wrote my to do list for today. I go and reply to some emails/texts and when I go back to S memo my list is gone! It doesn't autosave??? Who designed this? My iPhone used to autosave my notes and then it had the same problem when I would leave the app and come back they'd all be gone. Am I doing something wrong?
OmniSketch is a good alternative too, or LectureNotes for text purposes.
S-Memo doesn't have an autosave, you have to remember to save it, or exit it correctly and then say "yes" to the prompt, otherwise it will just ditch what you've done.
So there its no solution for this problem?I have Yuri big drawing I can't access so 8 can finish them!
I updated my firmware to the latest open Europe one and the problem stop! So the best to solve this problem is to flash a new firmware!
Pure vida guys!

Samsung Galaxy Note or S-Memo or S-Pen bug?
Hi
I have encountered this strange problem with my new galaxy note. Not sure if it is phone hardware, S-Memo or S-pen problem. Nevertheless, after getting the phone replaced, the problem still occurs but less frequently as before. Hope some kind souls could enlighten or share if they've similar encounters.
Problem = there's always this strange spot (right side) that could not be drawn using the S-Pen. Using finger is ok. Sent phone back to Samsung, they've changd the LCD, S-Pen and problem still persisted. Later they changed me a new set, but after a few tries, the same problem comes back but less frequent as before.
I tried resetting the phone, the patch size reduced, and even if it does not occur, drawings on that part of the screen is never smooth. Maybe I am having phobia now.
I can't post the picture here coz I am new...

Software buttons, were they really necessary?

I would just like to mention that the optimus g (the phone which the nexus 4 is based on) has soft keys instead of software keys unlike on the nexus 4.
Here are a few reasons why i wouldn't prefer software buttons.
- They can get easily pressed by mistake while using apps or if your phone doesn't have a lock screen.
- The nexus 4 it's self has a 4.7" display, but because of the software buttons it downgraded it to about between 4.5" to 4.55" which is really a bummer for me. (I do know that they disappear while previewing photos/videos, not that it matters).
- If the screen cracks, the software keys might stop functioning. And as you guys know the nexus 4 is very close from being a pure glass made device.
I'm not saying it's as bad, from the price aspect it's totally a worthy device! In comparison to other phones in this price range. But if they would've pushed it a little bit further it could've been the ultimate phone.
Might've been a few more things i did not mention.
Please, share your opinions!

I had the same concerns but I have found myself liking them, mainly for google now and the multitasking button. It has make my life a bit easier for example at the gym where I switch from my spreadsheet to my timer to my music app.
It also cleans up the phone nicely and if phones started adopting it more it would make it more consistent across platforms instead of every phone having the buttons placed differently.
One question I have is if Dev's have access to remove them in games for example, the games I play don't do this and I wonder if it's the dev's fault or a limitation of Android.
I don't mind the screen it takes, and IMO the Nexus screen is prefect size, the S3 is too big for me for example.

On ROMs like AOKP they'll probably start implementing the "hide nav bar" feature as one of the power menu options and that should make gaming more enjoyable

THey probably don't want to put in the extra work since the majority of devices don't use it anyway
Google made it clear over a year ago they were moving away from soft keys, the GNex was the first, so I don't know why this is such a big shock to everyone that this phone doesn't have them. If you need them so bad then don't buy another Nexus phone because they will never have them.
I like them because of the customizability

I actually quite like the on-screen buttons. the lack of capacitive buttons, provides a good area to place the thumb when holding in landscape.
I accidently press the home button on the ipad quite a number of times.
No issues here. I got used to them quickly. I think it looks nicer than hardware/cap buttons.

You're describing paranoid android there. That allows you to hide the nav bars for specific apps and make them automatically come back up when you quit the app

I came from a Galaxy S and I really miss the search button. It's unfortunate that not enough people realized its utility, so Google just removed one of the best shortcut buttons in any phone. I used to run fullscreen browsers and used gestures to switch, close, and open tabs. The search button was the easiest and fastest way to pull up the address bar when in fullscreen, and had the added benefit of being right next to the keyboard so my thumbs would already be in position to type in a search term or URL. I am waiting for ParanoidAndroid to implement the same kind of nav bar customization options seen on Roman's AOKP ROM. Then, I'd probably only use 2 buttons: back and recents. Long press back would go home, and long press recent would function as search. I would only use 2 because, well, you can see below how I'm using software keys. I miss capacitive buttons due to the increased screen area, but since i consolidated the nav bar and notification bar, it's not an issue. ParanoidAndroid's customization of nav bar color and appearance does make the app experience slightly better, and since the notification bar is a constant, why not have the software keys there as well?

I noticed the EXACT same thing.. some short words do get corrected, but longer ones that are miss-keyed won't correct. It's odd though because the suggested word shows the correct spelling of the miss-key, but the keyboard doesn't put the word into the text box unless you tap on it. It's extremely frustrating. I ended up using google keyboard because it corrects as it should (or as we are used to).. but I do miss having my email address readily available to tap on instead of having to type the whole thing out when logging into websites, apps, etc.
Yeah what's up with that

My guess is this has something to do with the new Samsung keyboard on this Note 7 custom build of TW. It looks like the keyboard may be responsible for the system lag some people are noticing as well. My guess is a firmware update will fix it. But don't worry you should get one almost monthly starting in September.
Has anyone tried using package disabler pro to disable the Samsung keyboard and see if that fixes the issue?

Samsung has repeated screwed this up since as long as I can remember. I remember the Note 2 literally had no auto correct whatsoever LOL Had to root to enable it (may have been the Note 3 can't remember). Anyway what is happening here is that the autocorrect can't keep up. You'll notice if you type very slow and make mistakes on purpose, the phone catches them every time. If you start blazing through your words, it can't keep up and misses them. With all this horsepower they can't seem to squash the lag. I am working on debloating my phone and removing a ton of things that hog resources. If I get enough of them out, maybe the keyboard will start to work properly. Who knows. This is stupid though.
I thought it was me! Switched to the Google keyboard. Fixed.

Samsung needs to recall Note 7 not just for the battery issues, but for the keyboard issues as well. Autocorrect barely works even for words and punctuation. When it tries to autocorrect it does so in an unexpected and illogical manner. There's no intelligence. Plus, words keep disappearing when I'm typing especially after hitting the spacebar, and even the spacebar is intermittent. My words end up jumbled up.
It's probably my style of texting that makes it worse, but it's fine on other phones. Ironically, I can't stand Windows Phone, and I've had much better luck with it.

The autocorrect cannot keep up with normal typing speeds. Works great if you type one word and wait 2 seconds to type the next. I posted on samsungs Twitter expressing my disappointment with my 850 dollar phone that can't autocorrect... Of course they had a tech support person from a foreign country try to walk me through some steps to fix it. This included a cache wipe and a factory reset. I told them I have seen 7 other phones behave exactly the same way and a factory reset will do nothing.
It's amazing to me that they continually screw up autocorrect each year. Do they even use these phones before releasing them? Mind blowing. I just typed all this with SwiftKey and didn't have to correct a single word!

It's scripted like in IT. Did you turn it off and back on again? In this day and age you would think they have an intelligent autocorrect engine working by now. The autocorrect engine should be continuously evolving. SwiftKey uses neural networks as a method to evolve its engine. I might go back to Swiftkey or Google keyboard since I don't use the stylus for texting anyway.
Newest update still didn't fix this.

I found the option to turn off the swipe gesture and its working much better. Having the swipe feature turned on killed the auto correct for me. It was adding 2 random words after typing one word. Unless this isn't Swiftkey I'd suggest you don't assume I've never used it.

That's the only assumption I can make when you compare two things to be exact when they are nothing alike in any single way at all. Type one sentence on both and you will see. The Samsung keyboard can't handle a single sentence without screwing it up. I could write a book with Swiftkey.
