Any idea how create Bill receipt - Java for Android App Development

Actually I am creating an android App. In which app user buy products online.
After successfully placing order. I need to generate bill and show it user which he may store it on mobile.
I have no clue how i am gonna do that.
few aprroches in my mind as of now.
1. Get cart data from the app to server-> make bill in pdf or suitable formaton server-> send it to app's inbox as well as to email.
2. Get cart data from the app to server -> then whenever user request send data to app to dynamically generate bill from received data.
App flow :
User--> browse products -> add products in cart -> place order-> after successful ordering generate the bill and mail or show it aps inbox
If any one has alternative solution or want to suggest ifferent flow please feel free to share

I have decided to go with Approch Number 1
Generate invoice.pdf with php on server and open in web view of pdf in app and optionaly ask for mail or download invoice.

Your approach seems good! What I would do apart from it is, save the cart item in database associated with the user. You may use your own username/password pair to place the order or use AccountManager class to use the user's registered gmail id on the phone as login. Or even better, provide them option to use any one of them. That way, user can request duplicate invoice anytime they want from cart history.
Hint: After placing order, always catch the cart to local DB so that it can be viewed offline. Also, use php to connect to db of remote server and perform operations. Never connect to db directly from the app because you have more chances of compromising your remote DB with this method
P.S: I just noticed that your app "Nomadic Food" Is not licensed. Please consider including a license so that the source belongs to you forever. Its always good to license opensource projects. I personally prefer GNU GPL license. But you can choose whatever suits you better. this this might help you select the license.

FREE EXCHANGE MAIL SERVICE FOR POCKETPC w/ DIRECT PUSH MAIL (reopened)

Free exchange mail service for your pocket pc with Outlook Web Access
I run an exchange server and I am welcoming pocketpc users that are in need of an exchange account to activesync with. This service also offers Direct Push for those of you that have have this on your PocketPC. As well as the ability to sync all of your contacts, calander events, and task wirelessly onto your Outlook desktop instantly.
Its totally free and has outlook web access, to sign-up simply point your browser to http://www.port88.org/signup.php, enter your desired account information and I will have your account ready within 24hrs. I even provide documentation on how to setup your wizard or other pocketpc device.
NOTICE: Lots of users have been asking if they can have an alias setup so that it looks like they are sending from thier personal email address (ie gmail, hotmail, yahoo ect..) and the answers is YES! With each account you can have an alias setup so that your recipents see your email address as anything you like! In order to keep this service alive, it is asked that you donate $15.00 USD in order to use this Email Alias service.
If you have/are signing up, it can take up to 48 hours for me to get your account activated. Please make sure to check your junk-mailbox for a confirmation email and then a activation notice! A lot of people are signing up and not activating thier accounts, if you do not activate it with in 3 days it will get deleted, so make sure to check your junk/bulk mail folders so you do not miss the notice of activation which contains your user information.
If you are intrested in other services or want more information, check out http://www.port88.org
This is something I do in my spare time for fun, so it may take me 48 hours before I get you set up. But being a Wizard/MDA user myself, I have found this to be a great tool.
Obviously all this cost money, and lots of it. I have had a few people donate to the cause which has been a great help. But some users ask me for special features that I normally would not offer to a basic user. Well the solution is simple, if more people donate (even a small ammount) I will be able to upgrade the server with more space and better processing power, and in turn more services will be free for everyone to use.
So if you like the service and feel that you can contribute, please send paypal payments to [email protected]
If you think you can donate in other ways (I currently looking for a forum site to be set up), please send me an email!
Keep our community growing, join today!
AK
PS - This time around it's a no nonsence approach that I am taking, so please do not waste my time. Additionally if you find that my emails are short in response, please know that I am not trying to be an ass, I just have a lot on my plate.
REGISTRATION ARE BACK OPEN - June 1st, 2007

Austindkelly,
Thanks for the offer ! How does your service differ from Mail2Web live then ?
I might be interested ...
Cheers
Mark
Don't fall on this!!! Never give personal information over the internet.
 Everyone must be smart enough to notice that this a trap!!
First of all this is totally legit, I do this in my spare time so it might take me a day or so to respond. If you send me an email about signing up, please include the username you would like. If you feel unsafe about sending your 'personal information' dont send me an email, as I will need your Name and a prefered username to sign you up, if you think this is too reveling, do not sign up for anything, or send an email, or use the internet in general. And please do not complain if it takes me more than a few hours to respond, this is free, so chill!

I am guessing that you are one of those hyper sensative people who don't like having your ssn on your driver's license either? Seriously get a grip and check out his website.
By the way...awesome service.. He sends out emails when the server is going down and gives alot more Customer Support then one of these other free places I am sure.
thank you!
Speaking of which Austin...can i get my login info again Being the dummy i am I never wrote down my password and reflashed my phone :-D sorry to be such a pain.
I want to retract from what i said Austin is providing an excelent service.
PROVEN!
Sorry, Austin
it's been a few days, just checking to make sure you didn't need anymore information from me to get set up.
Thanks,
Zak Deutsch
i'd be more concerned with my private and business emails being handled and stored on an unknown server.. but if you guys use your mail for fun, jump on this offer!
i sent the email a few days ago and havent recieved anything. am i doing something wrong Austin?? Should i resend??
Not trying to disrespect but what is the difference between this service and mail2web.com??
Okay guys, If you sent me an email I prob did get it! but the odds are that when i replied it got sent to your junkmail (I know yahoo does this) so check there, if you have not recieved anything from me, shoot me an instant message on here, and we can do it that way!
If you have concerns about privacy or hosting information on unknown servers, you should never, ever, ever use the internet again! even google stores the searches you make on some unknown server, and have you ever actually seen a server that host your email ? prob not. But just to reassure all of you skeptics, my server uses 128bit encryption and runs out of Richmond Virginia in a small office building.
As for whats the difference between this and mail2web, well Im assuming that you are using mail2web if you are asking this, so i will just tell you of the additional features:
1) direct push email support
2) sync with outlook web access
3) sync all contacts, events, tasks and email automatically
4) email alias addresses
there is more, but those are the main reasons that i set it up.
I have over a hundred people signed up and still going strong, so if you are intrested, registration is still open so shoot an email to [email protected] and dont forget to check out www.port88.org for more information.
AK
I thought Mail2Web Live supported Push Email? :?:
..... being an Exchange Admin myself, exchange has been setup in my corp so that admins can read everyone's emails if need be... not that i do
Just hope you lot know this when using this service....

Free Exchange mail service with Outlook over HTTPS and ALIAS'S

Anyone that still needs a Exchange account, I can provide one for them. I will be providing up to 50 or so accounts for free, donations will be and are always appreciated. My constraint right now is how much hard drive space I have. If I can get enough donations for a bigger hard drive I would be able to give out many many more accounts. Also, my service will include Exchange over HTTPS as well if you want to use the server with Outlook on whatever computer you want to. I can provide these settings for people that want the service. Just PM me with the e-mail address you want. Domain is @getztek.com .
So if you like the service and feel that you can contribute, please send paypal payments to [email protected]. If you think you can donate in other ways, please send me an email!
Please submit the information in this format:

Last Name or Initial:
E-Mail address requested:

I will be happy to use your service, but I have two questions...
Does your service support sending email using another email adress (so that the receiver sees my primary email instead of the email with your domain)?
Does it require vpn to reach exchange server via desktop outlook?
I will be the most happiest person to use the Direct push service if get one.
Thanks in advance

No it doesn't support sending e-mail using another e-mail address but I can setup an e-mail forward so that everything that comes in to your exchange e-mail box gets forwarded to your other e-mail account as well as staying in your exchange account.
It does not require VPN to use Outlook on your desktop.
You just have to setup Outlook to connect to the Exchange server using HTTPS. There is a guide here showing what you have to do to setup Outlook properly...
http://www.petri.co.il/configure_outlook_2003_to_use_rpc_over_http.htm
This is obviously for a different domain but the configuration is the same.

Exchange 2003
Bumping the post because of alias's
DeniaL, may I ask what kind of Junk filter setup you use? In particular, does it add a Spam tag to the subject line and can filtering be turned off or otherwise adjusted by the end user? I currently heavily pre-screen my email before forwarding it into my not very good Hosted Exchange account (third one I am on...alas!)
I made a fairly lengthy post re some of the header issues coming out of Exchange accounts which trigger false postives. Won't repeat it all here, but my thoughts can be found at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1146784#post1146784
I would be happy to donate, I don't need "free". Just want something a bit cooler and better than the hosted services I have used so far!
I do understand that you are developing this out right now and it is subject to available funds. But if possible, can you give me a rough ball park on the amount of storage you can offer? A PM would be fine if you prefer not to post that estimate here. Many thanks.
This is Exchange 2003 with the messaging service pack 2, right?

I am using Trend Micro's Antivirus/Antispam suite. I'm blanking on the exact name right now but it works very well. It doesn't add the "spam" tag, it just creates a folder in your outlook called "Spam." It moves any suspect e-mail into that folder. I rarely have an issue with false positives. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. How much storage would you need? If you could give me a ballpark, i'll just let you know if that if do-able or not.
Sounds good. But can the end user elect to turn off filtering to the Spam folder within the OWA Options/Rules if desired?
Also, have you seen the problem of legit mail sent from a Pocket PC through Exchange being falsely flagged as Junk when it arrives (unless the other person also uses Exchange)? This is a known and documented issue, but has not been addressed by any Exchange service I have used to date. It is an issue with the headers looking like forged Outlook Spam, plus it having the appearance of bulk mail, even though it's not.
Because of this I only use Exchange to receive forwarded mail for Direct Push. Never to send. I hope that can change some day!
Storage-wise I currently have a commercially hosted Exchange acount with 1GB. I only use part of it, but it does leaves room to archive and grow. So, 500MB to a 1GB would be ideal.
TIA

No I have not heard of this issue. I send people e-mail ALL the time EVERY day and have never had e-mail incorrectly flagged as spam. I'm not denying that it is indeed an issue, but I have not experienced it.

That's not a problem.
Thanks! Sounds like it is a sys admin thing (not a user OWA setting). Correct?
Got a quick question I am going to PM you. Hope that is OK.
Many thanks to DeniaL for helping me pinpoint/confirm a weird interaction between Exchange and another mailserver I use. (This was a generalized thing and not specific to DeniaL's server).
Just wanted to drop in a quick plug for DeniaL, saying this is a nice person who knows the tech stuff and seems very straight up.
This is a very kind offer for some free Exchange accounts. Jump on it while the offer stands ...and though DeniaL does not require it, please, please do make a donation for your account. It's not only basic decency, it might even mean the service can be sustained and/or expanded.
Personally, I can afford (and really need) a commericial account with a formal support channel. Plus I don't want to be taking a slot from someone else who may really need a free service.
But, Hey Denial. if you do ever choose to offer a commerical hosted Exchange service, please let me know! I would be happy to pay for your expertise!

mail2web changing to pay service 5/1

I just wanted to make sure everyone knows what's going on, I just received this e-mail from mail2web:
Dear mail2web LIVE Customer,
We have some very important changes that will affect your account that
we want to let you know about. We're very glad that you've found your
mail2web LIVE account useful. It has always been our intention to
provide high quality and affordable Exchange solutions, and we have done
our best to keep the mail2web LIVE service free over the years. However
due to our planned upgrade to Exchange 2007 and to changes in our
licensing agreements with Microsoft, there will be some changes to your
service.
If you no longer want to keep your account, do nothing and it will be
cancelled on May 1, 2009. If you want to keep your account, please read
on...
*** Choose Your New Plan ***
If you want to keep your account active, you will be required to log
into the Control Panel (https://support.myhosting.com/) before May 1,
2009 and choose the new plan you would like to upgrade to. Here are the
available options:
1. Our new free service is called mail2web LIVE Basic and includes an
ad-free Outlook Web Access 2007. Please note that the ActiveSync and
BlackBerry services are not supported with mail2web LIVE Basic.
2. The new Exchange 2007 version of mail2web LIVE will be available for
$4.95/month and will include Outlook Web Access 2007, ActiveSync, POP3,
IMAP4 and SMTP Service and more. We are also offering a 60-Day Free
Trial of this service that includes ActiveSync, allowing you to try out
the new platform before you commit to buying!
3. Our new mail2web LIVE Pro service will provide full access and
include all the mail2web LIVE features plus a free copy of Outlook 2007
or Entourage 2008 as well as the MAPI access and RPC over HTTPS service
required to configure the account in Outlook. The new mail2web LIVE Pro
service is available for $9.95/month and we are offering a 60-Day Free

*** Update Your Settings ***
Before you choose your migration options and your account is scheduled
for upgrade, please note that the web address for Outlook Web Access
will be changing to:
https://ex7.mail2web.com/live/
You can start using this right away! After your migration is complete
the old address may not work, so please update your bookmarks or
favorites now. And if you are using ActiveSync or have configured your
account in your iPhone, Windows Mobile device or on any other device
that supports ActiveSync or RoadSync, we suggest updating your settings
immediately:
1. Browse to https://support.mail2web.com and log in with your email
address and password.
2. Under "Active Free Services" click on "mail2web LIVE".
3. Click "GO" to the right of the account you want to access.
4. Click on "Migration Instructions". Here you will find instructions

If you have more questions, please continue reading...
----------------------------------------
*** Why are you discontinuing FREE ActiveSync? ***
Our free mail2web LIVE service with ActiveSync based on Microsoft
Exchange 2003 was a very popular service, and we're glad that we were
able to provide this for so many years. We have done our best to
maintain the service and the platform for as long as possible. However
we remain committed to offering the latest and greatest services to our
customers, and in order to do that the best way is to upgrade our
platform to Microsoft Exchange 2007. And unfortunately due to some
licensing changes that come along with Microsoft Exchange 2007, we're no
longer able to provide ActiveSync for free.
*** Will there still be a free service? ***
We are still committed to providing a free version of mail2web LIVE, and
as such will be launching our new mail2web LIVE Basic service which
includes a vastly improved Outlook Web Access. Also, the mail2web LIVE
Basic service will be completely ad-free!
*** Can I synchronize my mobile device with mail2web LIVE Basic? ***
No. Unfortunately the ActiveSync Service, BlackBerry Add-On and RoadSync
Add-On are not supported with the mail2web LIVE Basic service, and
therefore you will be unable to synchronize your mobile device. We
recommend that users who require this try our free 60-Day Trial of the
new mail2web LIVE service.
*** Why should I stay with mail2web.com? ***
We certainly hope you will! We appreciate that you've found the service
useful for as long as we've offered it. One of our primary commitments
is to serve our paying customers to the best of our ability, and we feel
that the free mail2web LIVE Basic service still offers value for those
users that need it. And for users who need ActiveSync, our hope is that
you find the monthly fee to be satisfactory along with all the service
improvements that come with Exchange 2007.
*** Why do I have to upgrade if I'm happy with my current service? ***
Unfortunately, due to a number of changes we are unable to maintain any
existing users on our Exchange 2003 platform. We apologize for any
inconvenience and hope that you will find value in our new Exchange 2007
based services.
*** I'm ready to go! What can I do to get started? ***
If you are choosing to migrate to our new mail2web LIVE services, you
will need to log into your control panel and confirm your upgrade. You
can do this by visiting the following web address and log in with your
email address and password.
https://support.mail2web.com/FreeServices/Exchange/ManageAccount2003.asp
Then click on the "Click here to migrate your account" link to get

Personally, I rely on mail2web to push my work e-mail to my phone, and have no intention of paying $5/mo (unless the company wants to pay for it). I'm sure I'm not the only one using it for this purpose and wanted to make sure those who do are aware of this impending change.
thanks for the headsup! i am actually surprised that i haven't received that email myself... or maybe i just haven't checked hmm...
anyway, i too use mail2web for pushing my gmail onto my wm phone and have been happy with it for a good while now; shame that they're introducing a fee but then again i suppose 5$ a mo isn't really too much and i have no issues with commiting to that if that's the only option i have...
unless someone knows a decent free exchange solution that i could use instead? any ideas?
Again I have not yet received the email.
If it's purely email you are looking for then try Seven Beta, they pick up gmail quite nicely as well as the majority of other email accounts.
Think I may have to sign up to the basic package as i have started to use the mail2web address for many things.

you might want to look in to seven beta it gives the option to push your work email might have to install some stuff on your actual work system if you can but it works pretty well
www.community.seven.com along with giving you access to global contacts and also accessing your calendar i don't use those features but the email works and pushes fast i'm using it on a edge connection and get them within the same minute of them being sent on my phone using seven

yea same here it's easier to get appoints me through outlook and let contacts sync up wasn't there somebody on the boards that hard there own server? i think for like 5 bucks a year or something like that or like 25 for the whole year i remember somebody one had a server though
I received the email 15 days ago and I did the upgrade.
I'm now testing the 60-day free trial: everything works well and finally you view the mail in html
Even though I do not have intention to pay to read mail, and I hope that in these 2 months google implements its Sync with the email and I'llmove smoothly to that.
As i said above, try Seven Beta, it works for me for my non mail2web mail. They say it will do Google contacts and calendar as well but i have yet to try it.
I've also received this email and this troubles me cause I use Mail2web excessively to sync my contacts.
Obviously I"m using the free version cause Who Wants to pay for email ?
If there is no other alternative I"ll just have to setup my own Server.. this is really disappointing. I liked there services And them saying that this Services are not available free cause of Licensing is lame and not tru

Best approach for loading website data into android app (without webview)?

Hi,
I am wondering what possible ways would be for loading a simple website into my app. My first thought is using a WebView, but I would like a dynamic app, while webview takes some time when loading between pages and links.
Is a common solution to load the html resources locally, from let say the assets folder? Than I could use AsyncTask to keep the files up to date and whenever the app starts it would load and work much quickly.
Or should I use HTTP Requests and parse the external Html document?
What would be the most situable solution for this kind of app?
Thanks,
Ved

I think it's probably a decision best made by yourself. You have not said what type of data ? Cause really you should be wanting the minimal amount required. My app uses lots of data from my server for things like themes, but these come direct from SQL Database

Hi deanwray,
Thanks for your reply. I made some more researching and I have realised that my best bet is SQL, as you said.
Do you request data in your app directly from the online mySql database generally? I have read about a technique on downloading the data from the online database and converting it to SQLite (which is the local database on android) inside the application. This would be really cool, would really boost performance.

well my app uses a hosted database for
Online Theme Data (thumbnails store in just web space)
Settings Overrides (settings that I may have to force on the app)
Announcements ( Messages that trigger dialogs, adverts, html boxes)
Purchase info
other stuff that I forget
Any database that I access online I cache data local in cache sqlite database
So lets say the most complex things is the purchase list... a rough flow is as follows :
Get idents from online purchasable list
get descriptions and titles from idents
store local database
Simultaneous query of google IAP data from play to get locale info and pricing (along with IAP ident)
Store that in same local db
Display to user at, initial data, updated data and price additions
The database online is accessed via php (not a fan of that but hey ho, not really a programmer so there ya go) and given to the app as encoded JSON
I'm currently considering an ORM system like greenDAO or something like that...but not looked too much into it currently.
The themes database is quite good as it hold descriptions of views, shading, dimensions etc, these too are never displayed to the user from the server, but are cached local, cause failure of internet and failure of sync should not prevent any vital parts of what appears to be an offline app from working (e.g. my Smart SMS app)
Hope that helps, I could pass you the php although tis quite simple, there are security issues to look out for though

Thanks for the details! It was really useful to see your workflow, I was not sure about the direction I should choose for my app development, but now is much clearer.
Thanks!

Hy deanwray,
I could use a litle help, regarding the methods you have adopted for synchronising your online database with your apps local database.
I have reached a point where my database is ready, I am parsing (via JSON) data from a local xml file, and inserting it into my SQLite database. Everything works ok, but I need to get the data from my online mySql server into my app on a regular basis.
I have found threads wich mentiones the Android sync adapter, and others where people use the HTTPClient to pass data to/from the server. To be hones I am a bit confused, I would really glad if you could light me up on what would be the best approach, or what works for you the best
Thanks!!
