[Q] Samsung Galaxy S 4 I9505 - Hardware Qs. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
my Galaxy S 4 arrived today and I'm really glad I bought it, even stock it's an amazing phone.
But I have some questions, because the data I read on the interwebs is different to what I get on the packaging.
Note: This device was boughtdirectly from Deutsche Telekom - Therefore it's NOT a fake.
CPU - Everywhere I read stuff about his phone, I read "Exynoss 5 Octa". All I get is a 1.9GHz Quad?
I mean, what happened to the other ARM CPU?
And what happened to the 64GB of storage?
Thanks in advance, and please no n00by answers

There are two models with different hardware, the i9505 is the quad core powered device, the i9500 is the octa core model, available in some regions only. Not sure if there was a model with 64gb but its expandable by adding an SD card.

Well that sucks, to be completely honest. Hm. Never mind, it's still a great phone.
Thanks

It is an excellent phone, I wouldn't get too bothered by the processor difference. There is currently better dev support for the i9505 (full cyanogenmod support, Google edition ROM, etc), due to Samsung not being very helpful with the source for the exynos chip.
In reality the exynos version doesn't appear to have much of a power advantage as only 4 cores can be used at a time anyway. Plus the battery on the i9505 appears to be better.

There are so many ROMs, I can't choose which want I want to use first I think I'm going to test Android Revolution HD and hope that it's not as laggy as on my GS III, because I do want to try out the features Sammy has put into this phone.
But thanks for your help

New galaxy s2, cpu question

Hello fellow galaxy comrades. I've finally bought myself a galaxy s2, I absolutely adore it. But I just have a question, when I use android system info ap its says that I have an ARMv7 processor, however when I check the Internet many sites say it should have an cortex arm9.
My gpu is mali400 which seems fine but I'm just worried i've picked up a variant. I'd rather have the original beast.
Have a picked up a variant?

As legit as a bar of gold my friend...the terms you see are purely technical terms hence the variance. Not to worry, the other variant (cut down version) has LCD rather than LED (not as bright, vibrant or wow factor), has Nvidia chipset (slower than Mali). So I would be surprised if you were even able to purchase the variant (Samsung I9103) since it has not been released for sale. Specification of the variant...
Thank you for your quick reply, I'll be hitting that thanks button when I get to a computer

ARMvX is the architecture, the cortex A9 is an ARMv7 design.
Also you may notice that some programs say only 1 core, but thats due to the phone hotpluging (aka adding and removing while the power is on) the 2nd core as and when needed to save power.
Just make sure the box says GT-9100 and you're all good. There were no CPU variants with this product code.
I think the Nvidia Tegra II version is the GT-9103
what if you get i9250!!!
omg droolz~~
well just incase the OP take this seriously; its in IFA consumer electronics Samsung device lineup.
Samsung I9250 (W48) - 4.65" SuperAMOLED of HD resolution (1280x720 pixels), Android Ice Cream sandwich, 5 MP camera.
lol thank you all for your kind responses, puts me at ease. I shall be thanking you all.

[Q] Galaxy S4 versions and Developer support

Hey guys,
Just recently sold my Samsung Note 2, Samsung Galaxy S3.
I was actually saving some cash for the S4 but there is one thing I am wondering..
I heard something about the Netherlands (which where I'm located) as well as some other (European) countries will probably not get the worldwide version but the US/4G version with the Quallcom Snapdragon S600 instead of the octa-core.. (might be because 4G is taking of in Europe now.. not sure)
This leaves me wondering.. If the press statements are true and we will only have the Snapdragon 600 version, can we expect much Dev support for it?
For example.. I really loved roms like Omega and AOKP,AOSP on my S3 I9300..
As an IT guy myself I figured it must be easier for Devs to work with the snapdragon S600 in terms of programming and documentation but looking at the Samsung Galaxy S3 forums the Dev activity for the US version seems very low compared to the international one..
Long question short.. since Samsung will probably sell the Snapdragon 600 in various parts of the world, is it realistic to think we will have great support for both devices?
What do you guys think? please elaborate and keep it nice just want to share opinions and learn.
Both will probably have great support.
Go for it.

Certainly not.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the S600 version will have better developer support because of Samsung's stinginess with releasing the binaries for the Exynos CPUs.
So you'd probably be better going off going with the 4G version if you want dev support.

Thinking the same thing. As far as I know, most of the issues with the I9300 development stem from Samsung's lack of documentation and complete source-code for the Exynos chip. Hopefully the 4G version of the S4 (with the S600) will have better documentation. Would appreciate someone smarter than me elaborating on this, since the development side is a very important factor for me when buying a phone

Exactly, developer support is important to most of us here on XDA.
From a technical point of view I wouldn't mind getting S4 snapdragon 600 with LTE/4G but I want decent dev support.
So what do you guys think? I would like to hear different point of views from everyone.
I agree on the fact the S600 is wider used and documentation is more available so this should theoretically mean that the S600 could receive decent support..

Well at the minute all d2s have official CM10.1 but the Exynos i9300 doesn't. That probably sums up the situation.

Hmm, I see..
For anyone wondering which version you will get in your location, I asked Samsung HK and Samsung USA if they could give us some more info on this. Also tried UK and Netherlands but they don't know anything at Samsung there.
I'll be called by someone from the HK/US office. Hopefully they can shine a light on this.
Seems like I will be sticking with the S600 version if that's the only version we will get in some european countries (NL/DE) and US. Let's hope the developer support will be decent.
If anyone knows some more info on which models are going to come out where, please comment here:fingers-crossed:
Samsung Norway says (on Facebook) that Scandinavia will get the S600, because of 4G Personally I'm thrilled by this, considering the poor source code and documentation for Exynos.
I also like the S600 version as long as we get proper support for it.

[Q] Exynos / SD600 choice within the UK?

Hi guys,
I'm afraid people will consider this a re-hash of existing threads however I haven't seen one specific to the UK and have a few questions to ask.
I currently have an i9305 but when I previously owned an i9300 I noticed that development was done more Europe than America due to your differences in handsets due to carriers.
Are there going to be differences between the i9500 and the i9505 in terms of dev support towards the UK?
As in, the i9505 will most probably have more developer support as Snapdragon source code is available (?) and so an actual stable ROM could be released, and also LTE is very popular now.
But would the developers in the U.S create ROMS that would work on the UK varient?
The reason I ask is because I love the SG3 but have grown disgusted by TouchWiz now and I don't care for the gimmicky TW features in the S4, I just like the horsepower it's packing bundled with that display and battery. CM10.1 on my SG3 has alleviated my disgust for TW which was held at bay through Nova launcher but inevitably got more and more irritating.
I was thinking to wait for the new Nexus, but that could be a while and could be underwhelming, and since they tend to be a lot cheaper I figure if it does come out and is amazing then I could probably sell the SG4 and have money left over after buying the new Nexus.
Also, on a side-note, is anyone in the UK planning on importing an Exynos varient? To me the lack of dev support and LTE for -slightly- better noticeable performance and potentially slightly better battery life isn't enough to justify it.
Cheers
There is a thread for UK

But to answer your query. The UK is getting the same i9505 as the US. This time most of western Europe is not getting the Exynos (i9500). Asia and Eastern Europe seem to be getting it this time. Which is annoying as I want the Exynos version personally.

Ok that's cool, to be honest I am happy enough with my S3 I could wait for an Exynos LTE release since I am buying SIM-free anyway, but again for me developer support is really important so I think I'm better off with the Snapdragon varient, and let's be honest, the specs are still amazing.
Let's be honest here. What could you possibly be doing on your phone that would require 8 cores? Even four is probably over kill haha. My computer is 4 cores and it compiles ROMs just fine. What could I possibly need with an 8 core device? I feel like sometimes people get too wrapped up with having MOAR CORES without really thinking about why they could possible have a use for 8 cores on a cell phone.

duh, audio chip beats the bottom of 4 core
First 70% release of S4 will be Snapdragon version,so all Europe will have Snapdragon and the devs will support it more for this and because of the open source. Also every developer who work with Exynos sick of it and i don't think he will prefer it again easly. So if you need suport go with the Snapdragon version, and yes the specs is still amazing!

[Q] Confused - I9500 or I9505

Been reading a lot about their differences and still can't get a clue as which one to buy. Its been more than a month since S4 is released and generally speaking, I am looking to buy S4 not specifically to use 4G, but for general use, mostly apps, a few games (not a hardcore mobile gamer) and also interesting mods.
The other day I came across a game for android specially mentioning it will work only in Adreno GPU. This quite surprised and confused me as to if in future, apps and games will be customised based on CPU/GPU?
Provided the issues that have been reported, mainly the overheating and battery drain, is it wise to wait for a month or two so that Samsung release a second production batch of S4 with these issues fixed? Or there won't any hardware fixes for S4 anymore?
So which model has a better future? (leaving the 4G part).
Hope I get a reply as I am sure the highly knowledgeable and vast users of this forum can help ease my confusion.

There's really no need for an S4 with Snapdragon 800 and Adreno 330 (i9506).
Sure on paper it may perform better than the current S600 version, but will we notice in real life usage? Probably not.
The original Galaxy S4 S600 variant is more than enough hardware to run anything we throw at it, at least for the next year.
So be happy with with your S4 and just wait till the S5 is released, this will be even better again than i9506 version.
And so the cycle continues. This is simply technology for you.

IMO Samsung is doing this to keep up the competition with the recently released HTC One.
Their very first S4 may have been better in terms of specs but those who used HTC One and S4 in real life knew the difference and knew that HTC One was way better.
Therefore, they are trying to win this competition by releasing another variant of this device with better specs and also trying to reason the price.
But a word of advice to Samsung. There are not many people who know that there are so many variants of a single device. People just come in at a mobile store and ask for a S4. They seriously do not mention a particular variant no.
So Samsung, plz stop sh***ing around and plan on releasing better mobile phones like HTC one and not some plastic mobile with ground breaking specs thrown in which are not 100% compatible with each other.

im going to get a phone i want htc one but here in my country its damn expensive , no ads for it compared with s4 and iphone , and you cannot find anywhere cases for it and its not popular but i think its better than s4 .... So i changed my mind and i was intending to get i9505 and this **** have come now but it would be expensive and i say to all s4 owners your phones is extremely fast comapred to its competitors and dont give a **** for samsung as i see this phone an un-needed upgrade and why they dont pack sd800 in note 3 and speed it up then pack it in next year's s5 (***k samsung)

Slower versions? Slower where.? In antutu and quadrant? Come on guys, wake up, benchmark is not the end of the road. Be happy with the devices you get with your hard earned money.
Samsung is not the only player in market doing this, HTC and Sony are doing the same. Sony is now preparing honami and HTC is preparing a 5 inch HTC one which will make the xperia z and HTC one owners moan. And within a matter of time we will see devices with 5420 which will beat them all, the cycle goes on

Youre right, speed is not that much of an issue as all versions are really fast but still...
And what about updates? How long will they take now that there are so many S4 running amok

Htc and sony are releasing a 5+ inch devices (phablets) to compete with note 3 so they wouldnt moan just like s and note
I am sure the life span of updates for SGS4 (I9500) will be much shorter than any other device in high end Galaxy lineup Only around 20-25% of SGS4 devices are I9500. I am worried about future updates. That's why I am vouching for either CM port or something like that
