you not getting great battery life?, the nexus 4 is great with JB, try franco kernel for improvement, i got an extra 1.5 hours screen time due to it.
Nexus 4 only supports 4.2 and upwards
Find a 2.1 ROM for the Nexus One and flash it to the Nexus 4. The battery life will blow your mind.

I'm indeed getting a pretty good battery life on 4.2.2. I'm getting an average of 4 hours + screen on time, which is a huge improvement over my S2. It's just that the video playback/web browsing seems less efficient, in comparison to the Optimus G which has similar hardware.
Flash cupcake, bricks usually get pretty good battery life.

Your logic is painfully flawed. A completely different group of engineers/software designers created the software for the Optimus G. IF it is indeed more "efficient," (which, by the way, where is your evidence?) it is NOT due to the version of Android used. They simply spent more time optimizing the libs and apks for the hardware. Again, that's a big IF.

It has been proven multiple times that the optimus g and other devices with similar hardware have way better battery life than the nexus 4. just look for some battery benchmarks.
Furthermore, 4.2 seems more resource heavy than 4.1 was, which again leads to a higher CPU, along with other stuff, usage, which in the end results in worse battery life.
Whatever it is, there is a difference between the optimus g and the nexus 4.

First of all, I was only giving an opinion; i did say "seems", did i not? I don't need to prove anything to you, because it has already been proven. Search endurance rating for both phones. You make it sound like I was trying to start an argument, well, I'm not. I only wanted to know, the so called "IF" it will actually improve battery life. Seeing that you're an active member of this forum, I assumed you would know, that Android version used does indeed affect battery life. If you're not posting anything helpful (like the few peeps above, for the sake of trolling), then please don't.

You would be terrible as a lawyer. You're the one trying to prove a case here.. You submit evidence to your peers for review when trying to prove your case. You don't instruct them to go hunting for the evidence for you. It really eliminates this whole back and forth thing if you just put all your cards out of the table at once. I'm not a lawyer and this isn't a lawsuit. I don't have to prove anything to anyone.
I stated that there are enough evidences out there which can be found easily with a simple Google search. If someone is interested in refuting my statements, he can go ahead and do so. I'm not going to spoonfeed everything.
I am getting 5 hours On Screen time, consistently. Overall battery life anywhere from 11 -14 hours total on busy workdays, to 15 - 24 hours on light days.

Yeah, I have no clue why you would be needing better battery life out of this phone. On 4.2.2 I get all day and then some with lots of screen on time. I don't even have to worry about making it through the day with this phone. For the record, there is not going to be a kernel for the Nexus 4 that is compatible with anything lower than 4.2 so it's a futile effort to begin with. You could flash anything you wanted to your phone and then bask in the glory that is a soft-bricked phone. Like someone said above, a bricked device tends to get great battery life!

Look, why did you get a Nexus phone to begin with? Updates. What are updates? Improvement. Yes, it can last a day but it depends on you do. It's quite acceptable, until you try streaming movies. 1% gone per min. I know video playback isn't its strongest point but isn't it good to know you're not stuck in only one direction? Knowing that there are alternatives? Isn't that what this forum was meant for?

I'm sorry but regardless of how you try to justify it, downgrading isn't the answer to your problem. If you want to get better battery life out of your device (and I do understand that if you're watching a lot of Netflix on it that you would need more battery) then you're going to want to flash a custom ROM or Kernel or both. Franco.kernel is probably the most efficient kernel for stock. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002782 ) Like I said before, there isn't a kernel that exists for the Nexus 4 that will run with 4.1 so you may as well explore other options. I was aware of the fact that older versions are incompatible, which was why I joked too. But, I'm not aware of whether 4.1 would be compatible since it's still relatively new. I think you misunderstood, I wasn't defending the title; simply arguing with some of the things people said, like estallings15 and you. You may be more knowledgeable about this than I'm, but by no means, would i have to agree that searching for new ways, to improve my battery life is bad.

Just checked my stays right now. 5h 32m On Screen time. Total time off charger 12 hours. Battery at 19%
I get 5h + On Screen time every day.

You should definitely unlock the bootloader directly, because this process will delete everything on your phone... When you used your phone some time and want to unlock it then, the backing up and restoring might be annoying.
And don`t drain the battery to 0% or the red light monster might get you.
On top of all that has been said, rooting is worth it, this thread will help you choose a rom & kernel (just remember, no rom is the best, you just have to try some and see what one you like)

Calibration was a farce.
OP, you need to head over to the dev section and find a kernel. Read the OP's, comments on battery life, functions, etc. and figure out which kernels you want to try first. I would start by running stock with a custom kernel.
mc704, I just want to say, on behalf of the nexus 4 community. Welcome. You will find a huge variety of ROMs, mods, and kernels to choose from. Lots of things to try and customize. Rooting your nexus is the best thing to ever happen to your phone. We are a community driven force to be reckoned with. Just remember one thing while you're here? Please take your time and read up on anything you might have questions about. Most of are more than happy to assist you should you run into a brick wall. I started of unlocking and flashing AOKP accompanied with franco kernel.
but it's just my bad habit, unbox, don't even boot it once, flash with custom.
(did that to iphone4, htc one X, and now nexus, lol)
after I got used to all of the sweetness of AOKP (oneX), couldnt go back to stock.
forget battery, calibration is myth from the dark age of the nimh batteries
for the beginning, if you have no past experience: unlock, root, flash custom kernel (franco is IMO very decent)
play with it, see what you like and what not, do research and enjoy having the best phone on the market. and being a part of the best community

My question now is....what is the majority consensus on a screen protector for the front and back? I searched and there are "many" preferred.
If you want one on the front, make sure you get one that has cut outs for the sensors so it won't cause any issues. But I'm pretty sure by now the all should have the cut outs. As for the back side, if you don't want a case I think you should get a skin for the back. (More info below). I think you should get a case as well to protect the device from accidental falls.
I use to have a screen protector on my phone but I recently took it off because I missed touching the beautiful screen. I'm not worried about scratches. I always make sure I don't have things in my pockets or bags that will scratch my phone. Lol.

I would say unlock the bootloader before you download anything, then just use stock for a little while to get a feel for how stock android is on this device. Then if after that you decide it isn't enough or there are some apps or tweaks you want that can only be had with root, root it

Hey there all and OP. like everyone is saying you should unlock the boot loader and I'd say roll with Stock for a bit. I find that after going from one ROM to another, I find myself going back to Stock-Rooted all the time. Something about it feels smooth and it flies. Look into custom kernels and Build Prop tweaks. The latter could potentially increase your data speeds. It has with mine noticeably.
And as for the person who is debating about getting this device, I say go for it. When the next Nexus comes out just sell the N4 for it. That's the beauty of the Nexus program. Either way you'll get the newest version of Android.

Hi there mates, Id like to ask You an advice. Im going to buy a new phone today and I was all in samsungs hype and wanted Galaxy S4 as the price went down since S5 is out. Than I started to read XDA S4 threads and discover this crapy Knox thing. As rooting my device is main priority for me, so I can use my device for a specific tasks only rooted apps provide and want to be able to modify the ROMs, with Knox S4 seems to be very limited for this. I really dont care about voiding warranty, but Knox seems to be causeing a lot of faults anyway and will be improved in next android updates with Knox 2.0. So S4 is no go for me. Than I started looking for other brands and ended up with LG G2. The price is to the cent Same as S4. Hardware seems to me bit better. I really like display of G2 and the overall look, compare to cheap plastics used with S4. Also like buttons on the Back. I tried to read a lot and watched some vids of G2 on youtube, but still have few uestions.
1. Im for 32 Gb G2, haveing no slot for aditional memory Id like to know if G2 can do USB OTG, and if so can I also use classic big PC HDD?
2. Can i get rid of navbar? as Im useing IMD Gestures I Dont want navbar to take display space.
3. Rooting G2 seems to be not difficult and problematic with android 4.2.2 on it, the version i want to buy is 4.2.2.
Is that right?
4. As I love my music and have Senheiser ears, Id like to know how It sounds?
5. As comming from samsungs android and seen others and also seen lg one, I really do love its look and clearnes and easy handling. Well i make it Step by Step i have th G2 32 GB and use it for Everything
1.Yes the G2 Supports Usb OTG and you can use Most of the Usb Sticks and also Hdd's (Ofcourse need the Big Externals theyre Own Powersource and the 2,5" ones maybe an Additional Powered Usb Hub since the G2's Usb Port might not deliver enough Power)
2.Ofcourse but i think thats only possible if you root the Phone and Install the Xposed Framweork + G2tweakbox
3.The Rooting process is indeed Pretty Easy just Follow the Nice Tutorials you can Find in the G2' Forums And 4.2.2 is okay and the 4.4.2 Update is already out too.
4.The Audio Quality is Amazing especially if you give the Audiochip the Support of the Viper 4 Android app
5.There is already a Rom Who gives a Samsung S5 Look but i think its onl for the D802 G2 Variant but there are enough Themes and Mods available to Customize it the Way you like.
6.On Android 4.2.2 the battery Life is Better than on 4.4.2 (But that depends on the usage ofcourse) On Custom Roms with the Right kernel and settings the G2's Performance Range varies but you will figure that out.
7.No Disadvantages the Display is Awesome Colors are not too Saturated (Like on many Oled/Amoled Displays)
8.Thats a thing wich made me Worry a bit,the Backside seems very Scratch Sensitive and without a Case or Bumper it can Slip out of the hand...Atleast thats how it feels like.
9.Ofcourse thats up to you and what you prefer, The G2 doesnt has a Removable battery,No Hardware Homebutton and the Buttons on the Back of the Phone are strange (My opinion) And ofcourse the lack of a Micro-Sd Card slot
10.If you Buy the phone just Update it Via the Update Section in the Settings to get KK directly from LG then you can Root it (Tutorials are available on XDA)

The LG G2 supports USB OTG but whether you can use your PC HDD is something I doubt.

Sounds great with poweramp, but don't expect good sound from the loudspeaker. It's trash.

That's a matter of personal opinion. For me, the Samsung and LG roms look pretty close to eachother. With G2 Tweaksbox you can tweak most of the UI and you can also flash a "flatter" notification panel. There are plenty of mods.

Battery is great - well it used to be great prior to 4.4.2. If you wanna flash, I suggest a Cloudy rom from cloudyfa + dorimanx kernel.
Asphalt 8 drains about 10% battery per 15-20minutes of gaming.

Yup - broken screen = broken digitizer. It feels plasticy all around and doesn't have that solid build. Just slap a case on it,

G2 gives most bang for your buck (the OPO does too but it's not avaliable yet) - so no, it's a fine choice but all a matter of personal preference

You can update it to kitkat and root - no problems.

Performance wise, KitKat is a lot better, but the battery is a bit worse. I'm personally on KitKat because speed is more important than 1 hour extra of screen on time. I mean, I'd spend that 1 hr extra SOT watching my phone lag so it breaks even - if you know what I mean

I think the battery life of the G2 on kitkat will still kick the S4's butt by a margin. We have been spoiled on jellybean but with kitkat it is still far better than any smart device that I have used.
The battery life still can be improved with a custom kernel like dorimanx. For me the phone is running for 27hrs straight with wifi on all the time, got 2hrs of SOT and yet I still have 83% battery left.

Okay I hoped for more opinions. But seems to me I made right dicision and can do no wrong going for G2. Anyways they had only 16GB version, so I have to wait few more days till I have my hands on 32GB. Will try gather some more info, bout customs and kernels around here.

custom recovery
Hi there mates,
so I finally get my LG G2 (d802). I updated to 4.4.2 KK and rooted it with IOroot, it was oh so easy. But than I started to read about custom recoveries and it is oh so mess. I pushed twrp with adb sucesfullyl, but cant reboot into recovery because some boot error and have black screen, when i hold power button i can get in to system normally. I red about autorec, but seems to be buggy and i dont want to loose knock on. Also red about Philz and CWM, but dont want to run into some kind of trouble, so I thougt it would be wise to ask someone more experienced for an advice. Would You please be so kind and give me a helping hand on this topic? Can You recommend me a custom recovery working on 4.4.2 KK without needing to unroot and downgrade and the method to push/flash/install it?

I'm using a Galaxy S4 (Black Edition, just got it - I really shouldn't) now... been using a white one for almost a year, then decided I should get rid of it and get an all black one, with warranty. I should have tried some other different model instead, I guess...
I might be able to sell it. With nothing else to get at this price point (aside from the Nexus 5, which is a no go due to poor speakers and battery performance and the HTC One which would be a more like a sidegrade if not a downgrade), I've turned my head towards the LG G2.
I know the LG G2 does not have a microSD card slot, and I also know it comes in both 16GB and 32GB flavors.

1) Is there any difference between the 16GB and 32GB variant, aside from the actual storage? In terms of ROMs and kernels support, I mean. The last thing I want is to buy the 32GB model and realise I can't flash anything on it because all the awesome development (dorimanx? ) is happening on the 16GB model and nothing of that works on the 32GB one
2) How fast did you get used to the physical button layout? I hear once you get used to them, they're freaking awesome.
3) Battery life... is stellar, right (dorimanx awesomeness? )? Like... 6~7+ hours of screen-on time, like I saw reports of in some places?

Since you're switching devices there might be some vice and versa opinions on your behalf. But at the end, the g2 wins.
1) I'm not sure. But I keep up in the development forums and never have I seen a 16gb only version of something vs a 32gb.
2) Very quickly. I love the back buttons, very accessible when needed.
3) superb battery life. I'm running stock with dorimanx kernel and get those kind of numbers with automatic screen brightness, constant Web and app surfing and a little bit of gaming. I do listen to music on mine A LOT (2-3 hours with v4a and neutron) and still get great battery life.
I recommend it, I doubt you'll be disappointed!

That's what I hear from everybody, but of course, me, being used to the standard layout (volume rocker on one side, power button on the other), I'm quite skeptical. The button layout is not a problem, though, but I was just curious so I asked :silly:.

Well, basically, some Tapatalking, browsing the Internet and playing a game (Castle Clash - yes, it got me addicted, f*** my life) throughout the day, on Wi-Fi or 3G... which usually yields 3h30m of screen-on time with ~1 hour of gameplay. I'm sure the G2 will be able to top that by at least an extra hour, though, at least that's what I make from all battery reports out there :silly:.

Yeah... there's always gonna be that awkward feeling I get every time I switch devices. 1) leaving community 2) entering new community 3) getting used to the device 4) missing the old device :silly:
The G2 wins for me because of the expanded storage (32GB vs. only 16GB on the S4 - no more microSD crap, having to deal with two storage devices), better performance and screen (I'm so sick of this AMOLED... even this new one is rubbish, but with AMOLED it's all about luck, as 1 out of 3 devices have weird / uneven colors when it comes to white / gray).

I can't get a 16GB variant. No way! 32GB for the win!
Buttons, yeah, nevermind, they're so awesome I shouldn't have brought them up as they're not an issue .
Battery life... just the answer I expected . DorimanX is the best - another reason why I'm switching to this device (kind of late, hope he doesn't buy a new device soon, lol).
I won't be dissapointed by the G2... if I manage to sell the S4 and get a G2 in the condition I want (brand new, with warranty and all that). By the looks of it so far, it appears that in less than 24 hours I could be selling this and buying the G2. Hope that works well...
In general, you just have to match the rom to your variant
d800, d801, d802, d803 etc...
we don't diff 16 vs 32 gig for custom roms.
And I also come from samsung and htc and this knock on, off, back rockers are just perfect..no problems at all getting used to them

How about AOSP based ROMs? Are they working well? And... knock... has that been implemented on anything else except LG ROMs?
I know I could find this info if I searched through the forum but I figure someone who already has the device has already gone through all these and is able to provide an all in one answer, so to say.

You've got plenty of roms to try. But you need to read. The g2 is really really brickable.
Someone should write a book: "1001 ways to brick the g2"
knock on works on most aosp roms, knock off works mostly only by tapping the notification bar.

1) Is there any difference between the 16GB and 32GB variant, aside from the actual storage? In terms of ROMs and kernels support, I mean. The last thing I want is to buy the 32GB model and realise I can't flash anything on it because all the awesome development (dorimanx? ) is happening on the 16GB model and nothing of that works on the 32GB one
2) How fast did you get used to the physical button layout? I hear once you get used to them, they're freaking awesome.
3) Battery life... is stellar, right (dorimanx awesomeness? )? Like... 6~7+ hours of screen-on time, like I saw reports of in some places?
I can get 4 hours of screen-on time out of my Galaxy S4, maybe 5 at best (with very low screen brightness and little to no gaming, perhaps).

Which carrier are you using? I have tmo and came from Verizon s4 and have no regrets...the stock ui is very much like aosp/vanilla and is very fluid...love the aosp ROMs as well...battery life is amazing on Mahdi ROM...13 hours on battery today and still at 91% with some calls and texts as well as browsing xda forums on my breaks at work...switching from s4 you won't have any regrets

There are a couple tools similar to Odin to flash back to stock which will fix most major issues...but there are also a lot of great ops to fix other issues

I have had mine about a month and am a flashaholic...not once have I bricked my device...its the people who aren't reading everything before flashing that are having issues...and I haven't heard of a large amount of permabricks so I should say so...I had more issues on my s4 learning than on g2

I did my S4 in like 5 minutes. Flash PhilZ recovery in Odin, boot up recovery, full wipe, flash ROM . Piece of cake. The S4 is not really brickable, by the way. Unless you flash a wrong bootloader, I guess...

Not the case with the Verizon s4...it was a nightmare...but nonetheless I will never buy a Samsung device again due to my experience... After buying my g2 though I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick to lg

When I got mine it required a bit more...but now you can 1 click root with towelroot and install recovery with autorec...after that you just read up before installing anything and flash away
I got my G2 about 3 weeks ago and love it. I previously had an Amaze 4G and prior to that an HD2. There are no comparisons between the devices. I happened into it by chance. My Amaze was stolen and I needed a replacement with a good camera for work quickly. I went into the T-Mobile store intending to buy a Nexus 5, but the G2 was on sale for the same price. After comparing the specs, it was a no brainer decision.
I'm currently running the stock Kit Kat ROM and kernel (rooted and debloated) and find the native OS to be the most pleasing manufacturer's UI I've used to date. Very close to AOSP and only a fraction of the crapware found on other UIs. This is the first handset I've owned where I didn't want to immediately remove the stock ROM because it's so well integrated. Whatever features that LG didn't include that I wanted are easily installed with Xposed and appropriate modules. All in all the G2 is probably the best bang for the buck (value for your money) on the market.

If you use autorec it will flash the JB boot loader, and a custom recovery (TWRP) so you can flash ROMs and what not. The only thing I've heard about hardware defects are lines on the screen. Vertical, horizontal and screen spasms altogether. When it comes to cyanogen, I've never used it on this phone. Unless you're one of those must-have-aosp sorta guys, stock ROMs are the way to go. On the other hand, I did use Mahdi for awhile and it was awesome.

Yes there is. Check the screen. On some phones, the digitizer randomly stops working. Often occurs after a drop.
Check for something like this or something like this.

I wouldn''t say "Not working" as much as I'd say not working properly. Camera performance on AOSP is generally horrible and more often than not, a Stock based rom would be the way to go =)

The G2 also has an important EFS partition. It's not as easily corrupted, but make sure you have a backup of it at least.
Don't drop the phone, the digitzer is glued to the LCD - if the screen cracks, your digitizer dies.

I'm a sucker for AOSP, do you mean the camera has worse quality (as the stock has more options), or does it randomly stop working? Coming from an i9300 I thought this device would have all the necessary sources available for development, or is LG a bad company towards developers?
Also, is anyone compiling AOSP roms with linaro for this phone?

I'll advise you to go for a Nexus 5, One Plus One or wait for something with tons of development for AOSP ROMs like the two I mentioned.
Also there is a risk of permanent black lines that happens to some G2 owners, its suspected that heat is the cause but if it happens to you while flashing you'll have to RMA the phone.
There is a workaround for the locked bootloader. The camera quality is worse on AOSP cause the drivers for the camera are closed source. Development on AOSP ROMs is slow. Best option is stick to stock or stock based ROMs

- how is the over all experience comparing it with samsung - htc devices , i have been using both of them for a while ( i dont like build material in samsung and update process with htc - i read that lg is making progress in this direction ).
- how does it feel after a while like the size,shape, build quality including overall performance .
im very close to buy one but im afraid a little bit - never owned an lg smartphone.

yes it does have a locked bootloader but that has not stopped us from getting recovery/roms/kernels/etc; we use a an exploit in the aboot to bypass the locked bootloader so there is nothing to worry about

none that I am aware of as a shipping device, but if you are an avid flasher(as in you love to constantly flash something new) than you need to be careful because there is permanent screen damage issue which you can read more about here

I am not sure which device(different g2 variants get different roms) you may be planning on getting but already have full official support and everything is working; although experience with aosp is not the best if you get use to the lg stock experience there are actually some great aosp roms(better experience than cm anyways)

I came from an sgs 3 and in the family my parents always getting a Samsung in overall I prefer the look and feel of the g2 but the screen is one of my bad points, it is full glass and very easy to break so I suggest getting a case as a priority and as one of the members pointed out the lcd/digitizer are glued together and it is pretty much impossible to get them separated so replacing is tedious

I came from a generation of small devices since before the sgs3(biggest device I had prior to the g2) I had a lot small devices so getting used to a bigger device was little but difficult but rather quickly and the button placement/knock on and knock code is a great feature and before you know it you will be knocking on all your devices(I spent about a month like that)
build quality is okay for a plastic device it feels nice but it definitely needs a cover to maintain it safe
performance is great, I never experienced any lag; camera took some great pics(in the day because low light performance is bad) and after rooting and installing the modded camera you will enjoy all the improvements in day/low light scenarios; and I use the phone for lots of gaming specifically emulators, so I was able to average about 20 hours a day with heavy ppsspp usage so both performance and battery life are killer
these are all a point of view from a zombiepikachu who is a gamer and lg based roms user and my point of view/experience may differ from others

well for aosp many users like mahdi-rom but you can also check out the g2 original dev thread(basically everything aosp) like I mentioned I am a stock user so I don't really touch the aosp side of the g2

lots of aosp choices.. AICP, Mahdi, Liquidsmooth, Vanir, Slimkat etc that i can name of ... u'll be ruined with choices mate..

the screen is great too
a great idea with knock code and power & volume buttons
camera quality could have been better
i just hope i dont get touch screen issues
