[Q] How do you keep your Nexus 4 protected? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What do you use?
Just a screen protector, bumper case, a full case, or do you go commando?

I went to ninja school.

I'm using a ringke slim case (highly recommend it if you want a case that absorbs shock and doesn't add too much thickness to your phone) and a screen protector, seems to do the job well so far.

Poetic Bumper case, I feel bumper cases in general are working as well, or maybe better than the other cases. I mostly went with the bumper case because I wanted to be able to see the back of the phone shine.

In order to achieve rear sexiness of my Nexus 4 I have the ringke fusion hybrid case with a white dbrand carbon fiber skin showing through. It's oh so sexy with no fingerprints showing and better protection than a bumper

no case. they spent millions on R&D to get a phone as small and thin as possible, I'm not gonna cover it in cheap plastic or w/e and bulk it back up
always same soft lined pocket, either zippered or tight opening like on jeans. nothing else in same pocket. screen side always towards body.
if in environment with decent chance of water being spilled on pocketed area (beach), phone put in small ziploc baggie
if in environment with decent chance of getting smacked on pocketed area (hiking), phone put in thick sock
never have damaged a phone to date

Official bumper.
It isn't too ugly or bulky, so it's bearable.

I intended to use Skinomi screen protector and TPU case like I have done with my previous phones.

I like my n4 just the way I like my woman, naked.

I have a Poetic Atmosphere and a front screen protector (the back has the stock one with the IMEI). The Poetic Atmosphere is not high quality because the rubber part in the volume rocker is now loose.

I put an Invisible Shield on the backplate of my Galaxy S i9000 for the same reason. Seems like it (or any of the similar products) are the best path to go.
I haven't done this on my Nexus S yet.
I'm was considering just buying a new backplate when it gets so beat up that I don't like the look any more.
Mine's not scratched at all that I notice after 5-6 weeks I've had it.
Sorry, I don't think I made myself clear. I want to know how bad the back cover scratches, not which case I need to buy (because if I'm going to buy a case, it's going to be the "S" curved one).
@above: thanks! Can you tell me how you carry around your phone? In your pocket? With other stuff? And where do you put it down if you don't use it? On a place where it could be scratched?
No scratches ...
Not using any case either
My phone is naked and I put it in a soft leather / fabric pouch ...
And I put it in my jeans pocket, together with keys and coins
Done this for months with my HTC Desire and it is still shinny as new!
i carry it in my horizontal belt leather case that was for my old SGS I9000
perfect fit
I already mentioned above no scratches on mine yet.
I carry it naked, in my pocket. My headphones are alway in my pocket (so there's a naked jack in there usually), and I frequently carry a second phone in the same pocket (an iPhone 4 or an i9000).
I've added a poll an edited the first post.
No scratches on mine, but that's because I keep mine in a Nexus One pouch.

I'm exactly like this, except from the keys and coins.
I don't have any scratches (I'm very pedantic with that matter) and I don't use any case (makes the phone looks ridiculous).
I have a couple little scratches... but if you pay close attention to the phone, it has a few black web scratches over a few areas. Almost reminds me of black paint on cars. My Samsung tv is made out of the same plastic and it has the web scratches.
This is an just an example of what I'm talking about....

No scratches. All naked and I definitely don't take care of it as I should
I have couple on the back and where the usb port is. I tend to miss sometimes when it's dark and I'm tired, didn't really expect it to be scratched there. Oh well, I'll be keeping this phone for a while anyways. Also use a case, but I don't think it's doing a very good job protecting it from scratches.

Holster case

I was wondering if anyone knows of a case / holster combination. I am very disappointed in the selection in accessories for such an awesome phone.

There is the amzer one, as well as seidio has a couple. Highly recommend the seidio, kind of expensive but worth it.

Best bet would be Seidio.
I use a Seidio Surface holster with a cruzerlite xda case. The Seidio Active case works as well, but I think works for thicker cases.
There is the French handcrafted leather case "norêve", which is quite expensive (around 50€), but it is a high quality case, so you pay what you get. They have immediate shipment for some models, or you can choose a personalised one which takes some time since they have to make it.
there are a lot of cheap belt clip cases on ebay, if that's what you mean.
they are good but they wear out quickly with rough handling. eg. this is what i use:

Can you post some pics on that combination? I have seidio active for my htc Sensation so I don't want another case/holster from them (they all look the same). Though, I absolutely need a belt holster cuz these phones are is too big and uncomfy for my pocket. I was thinking of a clear back tpu and seidio holster

The sensation holster will fit the N4 naked. It's too small to have the N4 fit with any type of case. Before the N4 surface and active holster and cases were released, I bought a Gnex Seidio Surface holster and that fit with the diztronic ultra thin shell, but that left the top and bottom parts of the bezel exposed.
I have the Seidio Surface spring holster made for the Nexus 4. Here's a pic of it with my XDA Cruzerlite case, any slim tpu cases will fit really:

Thanks for the pics and the info!!! I placed the order for a 16gb but my guess is that it won't even get here for another week or two (hopefully not any longer) .. that combination looks very nice and I like the xda case you got. I've had the OEM bumper twice over lol. First when I got the phone, sold it, got it again when it came in stock (sold it again lol). I do like the bumper but it's just TOO wide for me to hold and I fear I may drop the dang phone with it on lol. That's why I personally opted to go the tpu route. It's really what you prefer and then decide how to go about getting the right "parts" to make your own holster.
I jz saw a seidio active on eBay for $38/including shipping and ordered one. I guess I will wait for both to come in to see how big and bulky they are before I look at alternative.

Has anyone bought this before? It looks quite similar to the Rearth Hybrid Fusion. Add in the shipping from Amazon to Canada, and it's only a one dollar difference.

To me it looks like a frosted back, for this look you can get one way cheaper on eBay. I'm just going off of the thumbnail you have posted though. Could be wrong.
The shipping for the fusion to Canada is ridiculous! I've been thinking about ordering a few and getting them shipped to a mail delivery place in at the us border and then picking them up but after reading reviews that I wasn't sure it was worth it.

That's what I'm worried about too. I'm hoping that it's similar to the GN case ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1859080 )
Saw it at a Future Shop. It's clear like the Ringke Hybrid Fusion.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Two more things to note:
1) it doesn't have the bumps at the corners like the Ringke Fusion, but the TPU lip extends above the plastic. The lip also rolls up over the screen edge, but not as much as my off-brand Diztrinuc matte TPU.
2). No watermarks, rough edges, or button issues. While the covers over the buttons are nearly flush with the rest if the edges, the TPU is thinner and has ridges moulded into the TPU, so the buttons work properly, without needing to mash them. You can feel the buttons beneath the covers, and they provide proper tactile feedback when pushed.
So, it appears the issues with the Ringke Hybrid's buttons are wry fixable, as the factory that made this case did what Ringke couldn't. It's not the exact same mould being used... but it's close. Almost identical to the one they used for the Galaxy Nexus, but with the button issues of that model fixed (you couldn't feel the buttons on the GNex version either, just like the Ringke).
Curious if they're using polycarbonate as opposed to maybe acrylic though.
It's clear polycarbonate. The sides are the matte-finish TPU, and it's not quite as thick as the Diztronic TPU on the sides.
On the upside, it doesn't have those moulding flaws reported in the Ringke Hybrid Fusion thread, and the buttons have proper indentations with thinner material in the sides to let it depress properly. Also, the PC doesn't press against the back the way the Ringke Hybrid does.
But it's definitely more slippery than my matte-finish TPU case due to the PC back. The shiny sides/matte back of my off-brand Diztronic has bad button response but more grip, due to the matte back. I may have to look at an InvisibleShield, just for the tacky orange-peel to provide a grip pier, yet still transparent surface.

When I get some daylight. It'll be from an inferior camera, alas.
Also, given some of the complaints about the Hybrud Fusion, it seems there's nowhere to go but up. I wouldn't call this a good deal at full retail price, though.

Case or Raw Dog?

Simple question. Do you rock a case on the Note 3, or are you running it raw dog style?
I've now tried two cases, the Spigen Neo Hybrid and the UAG. Didnt like the Spigen at all. Love the storm trooper look of the UAG but that thing is nearly impossible to remove and it doubles the thickness of the phone. Plus, as a huge fan of the appearance of the Note3, I'm not sure I'd really like any case at all.
Thinking of throwing a tempered glass protector on the screen and calling it good.
I run it naked.
I love the look too, but not the feel. The leather appearance of the back looks great but gives very little grip. I have an otterbox defender and that same old patterned belt clip/holster that Verizon has been selling for years with their smartphones. I almost bought that spigen s-view case until I saw pictures of how it cracked one user's screen. I don't really like cases on my phone either but i'm not brave enough to go without a case. Samsung phones have been known to be kinda fragile.

It slips over the top and bottom, rather than back/front. So it will not pop off when you drop it.
And it has a kickstand on the back!

Yeah, I think I paid $30-ish for it. Had one for my last phone, an S3. Dropped it 3 stories off a balcony onto a sidewalk. There was a decent dash on the case, but no phone damage. Definitely worth it.

I love running the Note 3 naked. The only issue is that the back gets slippery at times. I had my first drop today ?. I like my Spigen case, but it's difficult to plug headphones in sometimes.

I run it naked as well. I'm actually more worried about scratching the display since I haven't dropped a phone in many years (knock on wood!). I've been contemplating getting the S view cover since it doesn't add to the thickness at all, but I use the phone so much it would be such a hassle to keep having to open it (and hold it open while using it).
I'm insanely ocd about the display because it somehow got scratched on my last phone (gnex) like a month after I bought it, just by putting it display side down on a table. It bothered the hell out of me for the following 23 months straight. Scratch resistant my ass.
I've tried a few glass screen protectors but they eventually peel away at the edges and it looks horrible. Suffice to say I'll never put ANY phone display side down again, and I always have a death grip on it when I'm using it...so I'm good to go.
Poetic Borderline bumper case because it's just enough protection without getting in the way. And it fits the slightly thicker Samsung wireless charging cover.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
Spigen Glas-Tr slim to protect the screen and depending on my mood either a TPU or metal bumper. The back is like $10 to replace if it ever gets scratched up so I don't bother putting anything on the back except for a FlyGrip to help me one-hand the phone. I did order a white back so I go back and forth between them - the white back looks cool w a metal bumper.

I always thought the gnex had gorilla glass...??? That's why I'm so paranoid about this phone. I know it's obviously a much newer technology as far as the glass, but I'm paranoid nonetheless.
I would love to see a legitimate scratch test done. I could only find one test done and it was with a knife, and wasn't really that clear. When the hell would I ever scratch the display with a knife?!?
They need to do some common sense, real world testing...i.e. putting the phone in and out of jean pockets with the metal rivets on them, and with keys and other objects in the pocket. Also placing it display side down on different surfaces and moving it around, etc.

What case are you using today?

I am a huge fan of cases and I like buying and changing them frequently. I recently got the S9+ and a Spigen Ultra Hbyrid S transparent case.

I checked Amazon UK but I didn't find any cases I particularly liked, so what are some of your recommendations?
I have the ringke rearth fusion case, rhinoshield bumper case and a tumi case. I'm currently using the ringke case because it's clear and gives an illusion of less bezels than the other two but gives enough protection for my use
@corwin_amber Wow.. that's one of the best looking cases I've ever seen. I believe I had a case made from the same material back in the day for my iPhone 4 or 5. I might have to order one from Amazon UK because it's the same price after discount and of course delivers a lot faster by Prime. Thank you for the suggestion, I really love the case!

Have been using Nillkin Nature series on my every phone since Sony Z3. Love that it adds literally no bulk, shows the phone as it's transparent and the quality is top notch. Protection is not the best but I am very careful with my phones and never broke one in last 10 years.
OtterBox Defender.
Love the case, fits really well and feels good in the hand, port covers should limit the dirt and dust that gets into the ports and as a tradie the belt holster is essential.
Only issue I have with the case is that because the phone and case is so big you actually have to look at the phone when you're putting it back in the holster otherwise you probably won't get it in first go or your shirt/jumper/jacket will get stuck in between and the phone won't lock in and it'll hit the deck. My phone has survived several drops because of this issue, however it has so far not taken any damage... What had happened a few times though is that I've scraped the screen against the locking tab on the holster whilst shoving it in, this has resulted in a couple of micro scratches on the screen, these are only really visible when I clean the screen really well, a few fingerprints are all it takes to cover them up.
I probably should install a decent screen protector but all of the ones I've looked at are either a pain to install (Whitestone Dome and others), only have adhesive on the edges, have "grid/dot Matrix technology" (how is this a positive feature, many manufacturers advertise this way) or are only tpu or other non glass film.
Also I'm too lazy/OCD to actually get around to fitting screen protectors even when I do buy them.
Im using the Unicorn Beetle Pro by SUPCASE.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B079BS4ZQ4
I've had several low height drops and even 1 drop from ear level onto pure asphalt!!! (I'm 6' tall) and the case protected the phone beautifully... Not even so much as a scratch. The case adds a bit of bulk to the phone but you get great protection.
Just a side note, I ordered this case while my Galaxy s9+ was still on preorder waiting to ship, and this is the only case I've used on it... Still holding up great. I'm considering taking the plastic screen protector out and getting a Whitestone Dome screen protector.

In your opinion, would the case interfere with a tempered glass screen protector?
Thank you

Official Alcantara one, alternating with the clear and silicone one, from Samsung's official lineup.
Still, the best is the alcantara case, hand feel is so smooth.
