from an s4 to a moto x - Moto X General

I started at&t services five days ago and i procured an s4. when i buy a phone i like to think of what it can do now and not what it could do after rooting. in fact, i havent rooted any of my personal phones in almost a year or so.
immediately i felt just how cheap the s4 felt, and slippery. the screen was beautiful though. battery life was great too. i couldnt get over the software hiccups, all the at&t AND samsung bloat and the almost square pics that the 13mp camera provided (when in 13mp mode). if i were to open my app drawer and fling the pages around i was on occasion greeted with lag. i couldnt stick with a phone for two years that performed like this, my previous phone was an htc one on tmobile that didnt lag at all.
so i decided to exchange the phone, i didnt want another one, that phone was great but it just charged so slow, and to a heavy user/ ingress player; its a bane. so i grabbed a moto x. have had it for almost two or three days now. no regrets so far. the display is amazing, i can notice small jaggies when holding the x about 5 inches from my face. battery life is slightly better than the s4. gps is spot on, so is my compass ive noticed. build quality is great too. camera, out in a sunny day does amazing! low light situations has me usually retaking the pic every now and then. speakers are awesome too, not as loud as the ones, but good enough.
over all, i dont miss the s4 at all and i dont regret my purchase. the value adds really do make this device worth its price. while i was typing this i have "ok google now" a few times. its touchless features is a god send in the car too

How is the 4g signal compared to the S4?

I did the same thing except on Verizon and don't miss the s4 at all. I came from a gnex and the moto x feels perfect. Nearly stock optimized android plus you can actually hold the phone in one hand.

I sold my S4 to my father. This phone is just about perfect.

I did the same thing. I got rid of my S4 and I'm loving this phone. The size is so much better and it fells much more solid. The switch back down to a 720p resolution didn't really make a difference. My only complaint is the camera and it seems that we have updates coming to improve the performance.

For the s4 to moto x guys would you say the text is just as readable or better because the moto x is 720 p?

I have also recently switched from the S4 to the Moto X. So far, absolutely no regrets. The activate notifications are so intuitive, and after about a week and a half I still feel like i'm performing a magic trick when I use touchless control. I believe this phone was specifically made to show that the latest and greatest specs aren't needed to have great performance on a phone.

What's the best part of the phone for you? I've used all the above at one point or another and still have the One. The S4 was way to gimmicky for me and the Z10 just doesn't have the necessary apps for my everyday activities.

Well I switched so far so good I just have to get used to the smaller screen.

For me its the size and closer to stock than any other besides a nexus..I've owned a ton of android phones besides the ones mentioned lol including the nexus s and nexus 4 but they are too plain... The s4 had way too many gimmicks that frankly didn't work that well IMO.. And battery life absolutely sucked on that phone for me... Z10 I loved but my key banking apps ( even with sideloading (which was unreliable to to begin with) were still missing android libs and still didnt work) and the fact the maps app completely skipped over businesses close to me when I searched that was it for me... The one was an awesome phone but I went through two of them that the camera would just freeze and cause the camera to crash over and over again...
So here I am lol.... When I was on Verizon I loved the Motorola DROID line and have been looking for a good offering from them on AT&T and finally have it

Anyone happy with their GS3

I got my gs3 and so far everything good not big upgrade compare to what I had, just the network but then again that's one of the major consideration on smartphones, phone is fast, camera great, 64 gb plus 16gb of storage and loving everything even the screen and the color (pebble blue) I see a lot people complaining like always when a phone is release(first is where the f*** is the phone and after they get it, does your phone do this?), anyways anyone else out there happy as well?

Can't you just search for the beats audio software mod that's been zipped up and flash it?
Criticism I heard/read about beats audio is that it's mostly software enhanced "gimmicks", E.Q stuff etc, and can be flashed to most phones...

I've heard the "Beats" audio, it's mostly enhanced bass and tweaked treble. Was not extremely impressed.
As for my new GSIII, I like it. Came from a flashed GSI. The improvement is alot more than coming from an older laptop to a state of the art one...
Yeah, I rooted it a few hours after getting it.
I came from the Aria, so the difference is pretty significant. I will say that I think the screen is ever so slightly too large. I think 4.3-4.5 inch displays are the perfect size.

Happy, mostly... Wish I wouldn't have had the evo to play with first, grr... That camera knocks this one's dingle in the dirt, the display is much nicer, and the devs are killing that thing, lol, I'm sitting here with my rooted phone and thumb up my arse wishing I knew how to dev cause we have not one Damn Rom... On the other hand I do like playing with Samsung as it's a tad different than HTC. It feels maybe a little better than evo in my hands, in a strange way, the phone feels a little cheaper so I'm not as worried to use it like it's intended. This thing gets hot and has performance issues and hopefully all my "issues" are all software related... It does have removable battery which is huge for me as I like to keep a few extra batteries charged and ready to go, HATE to be tethered to a wall. The sound on this thing is really loud and clean, really appreciate that... The digitizer is a bit spastic at times but that might just need tweaked as well... It does have 2GB's of ram:-~ lol, I don't know any Sammy devs either, did they all go to evo??? Lol, Need to flash something, going through withdrawals:-o I also don't have any of the display having the black spots or weird colors so maybe I got lucky for once... Ramble, ramble...

Give it time, the devs will come here =)

Buy Nexus 4 to replace One X?

Should I buy the nexus 4 to replace my one x? or should I spend double and buy the One or S4 nexus experience when they come out?
Do whatever you want. If money is not an issue then go with HTC or Samsung. Most likely users over here will tell you to get the Nexus 4. If you enjoyed the HTC experience then get the One. If you want to try something new, get the S4. Otherwise get the Nexus 4.

Not completely true, the hardware of the S4 is great and the camera, screen, speaker and screensize are better than the N4 imo. Its the crappy and bloated software by Samsung that cripples the phone atm. I had the S4 for a week and sold it because of the lags and stutters, the camera and screen are very very good.

Not the screen. No matter how high the resolution is, and how ridiculous the pixel density, nothing makes up for the unbearable oversaturation of AMOLED displays If I were to go for a new phone (although I probably won't for at least a year and a half) I'd actually go for the HTC One right now, not the S4. As for which to choose out of the three options, it ultimately comes down IMO to whether you need more than 16GB of storage. If you don't need more, then there aren't really any significant benefits of the next-gen phones over the N4. Otherwise, get the HTC One.

Moto X vs. the Gnex

Is it just me or does the Moto X feel very reminiscent of the Samsung G-nex?
I think so, too. The GNex, to me, definitely feels better than my N4, recently sold S4 and every other phone I've owned. I wish the X didn't have such sharp edges though and because that it comes in second for comfort. I will never get rid my GNex... ever.

Lol the gnex is the reason I left Verizon. They gave me like 5 gnexs lemons. Never had reception or battery life screens always developed dead pixels. When the nexus 4 came out I I ended my contract early along with my unlimited plan and went to T-Mobile and have had no regrets.
They do look similar though. Probably overall footprint is close.

I've been saying this on both tech shows I host. I upgraded from a galaxy nexus on Verizon. My other choices were the s4 and the HTC 1. I was in love with the gnex curve and form factor / size and the moto x is exactly that. If the gnex was made with better materials it might have felt as good as the moto x does in the hand. Maybe it's because the gnex is a bit outdated hardware wise, but the moto x seems so much faster and more smooth. I seriously love this phone. For my use case, it's perfect. The only thing I'm worried about is getting updates. Verizon sucks at updating devices, so I'm curious when we'll finally get 4.3.

Move from HTC One to Moto X, or wait for something "better"?

If anyone has made this specific switch, I'd be grateful to hear your opinions!
Also, should I wait until March and see what comes out and then make the switch? (my next upgrade would be December 2014) or just switch now? Keep in mind I'd have this till next December!
HTC flagship 2013 vs Motorola flagship 2013.
They're in the same league. It's not really of an upgrade.
What makes Moto X different than any other flagship phones is the Active Display and Touchless Controls.
Those features makes it stand out from the rest of the phablets.
If you MUST have Active Display and Touchless controls, then sell One and get Moto X.

Biggest intial pros and cons?
I just did that switch on Verizon. I like the size and feel of the x better and of course all the touchless and active display stuff is great. Only thing I like about the one is the boom sound and aluminum chassis.
Physically, this x feels similar to my old gnex, which is a good thing.

Same here.
Cons are the speakers. You just can't beat the One's audio quality.
Haven't noticed any speed differences. If I do a benchmark test, it's obvious, but moving around the UI and opening apps is the same.
The camera is so-so. In KitKat, you can move around the focus reticle which is pretty sweet as you aren't tapping around trying to get the right lighting. I'm leaning towards the One as having the better camera, but it's a slight lean.
I've always preferred stock android and the Moto X is the closest I'll get to it on Verizon.
Also, of important note, the Moto X supports Band 4 (AWS). I live in NY and in the city (Manhattan), Verizon's LTE is pretty awful. Once Band 4 is activated, this will definitely help. The One does not supports AWS.
How does the screen compare? Does the AMOLED help battery life paired with the lower resolution?

I sold my T-Mobile HTC one on swappa for $365 and bought the republic wireless moto x for $299.

Camera is worse but who honestly takes professional quality pics on a phone cam anyway.
I only really want data when im at work or home and have WiFi there anyway. So the $10 cell/text plan will save me oodles!

Better processor != Smoother experience.
And they both have the same GPU.
I have and love the Moto X, but honestly switching from the HTC One would be quite the downgrade. If you love AOSP then you can flash GPe, cant you? I would've gotten an HTC One in a heartbeat if the cyber monday deal had been for it instead of Moto X.

Why do you say it would be a clear downgrade?

Flashing the GPe on a vzw HTC one - been there done that. There are things that don't work. Sick of going to Roms where almost everything works. I just want everything to work.

Rule #1 in technology: there's always something better coming, buy what's available now.

I switched. One is a nice phone but Moto x is better, imo.

Same here. Done the GPe, CM, ARHD, PA, none of them are perfect. A lot are close. But none work 100%.

A Decision Made

Hi everyone,
I opted for the Moto X GSM Developer Edition today. I've been considering the Nexus 5 or the X for a while now. I just couldn't pass up the features of this balanced and apparently well-executed phone at Monday's sale price. Believe it or not, there is still some back and forth in my mind, but the decision is made, and I think I'm happy with it.

Hope you don't play ingress.
The latest update with the fancy ingress animations slow this phone down like crazy. I want my S4 back now, lol.
I did the same. I still have my nexus since I can't let it go. Love it too much but the size of the moto x is perfect and the battery life has me very intrigued. I guess I'll switch between them back and forth and just give the x or nexus to my girl once the newer generations of these phones start coming out.

Exactly the same here. I just can't sell my N5, but love my bamboo X.
Having two phones is ridiculous, but oh well I guess. The resale market for the N5 isn't what I want (the loss). They are going for less than I like, so I'll just keep the thing.
