Nexus 4 or nexus 5?? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am confused, I had a galaxy note 2 for few months but i recently lost it I am currently using a non smartphone and I know that lots of new phone will be announced next week at IFA berlin 2013 but am not willing to spend a lot on a phone after losing my note 2.
Nexus 4 prices are gone down to clear out the stock for nexus 5 but am not sure if it will be as cheap as nexus 4 was when it first launched. what do you suggest, should i wait till nexus 5 is announced and see if its worth it or get a nexus 4 now?
I also wanted to know if the battery life is good enough to last me a whole day since my note 2 had 3100mah compared to nexus 4 2000mah?
thanks in advance

The battery is good, atleast for me, I can easly get 1 day out of it.
Hmm well PERSONALLY I would buy the N4. But that's because I can't wait when buying something new and because I think that the N4 is already so smooth that you don't some more cores/ghz etc like the N5, because how much faster can it get? The heaviest games are already smooth so...
Maybe only a camera improvement would be nice.
Eitherway it's up to you, these are just my 2 cents.

Nexus 4 is indeed an amazing phone with the best pure android experience.
Of course all top branded high end androids will have support community for custom Roms and latest android features.
If you want some more customized UI like touchwiz or sense you can try something else.
But take into consideration that Nexus 4 is a value for money device with high performance which leaves most users satisfied.
It also has a unique design , a nice manufacturer and support both LG and Google.
I would recommend you to give it a try.
( another option for me is Moto X . very nice looks , customizable case , nice features etc. )

Just to reiterate what the other's have said, it's a brilliant value for money device, and recently in the UK at least there has been a 33% price drop from £239 to £159 which is absolutely crazy for a device of this spec. That's like a quarter of the price of the S4 which experiences more lag than the Nexus 4 if kept on touchwiz.
If you're one of those people who gets bored of the phone quite quickly, wait for the N5, I'm sure the price point will be just as good.

Nexus 5 isnt out yet and look at those people coming with their answers to buy n4.
First of all op it would be wise to sit and wait for n5 to come out and compare it on the based reviews with n4.
Then and only then you can say which phone suits you best.
Seriously, you guys sick the **** out of me with your adoration towards n4.

I recently broke my Note 2 and bought a Nexus 4 to replace it, so I feel I should chime in.
1) The Nexus has horrible battery life compared to the Note 2. I wish it wasn't so, but I've recently even gotten a battery pack to recharge it on the go. It lasts maybe 50% as long, and this is with the most recent update (jwr66y). --- EDIT: OP asked if he could use it all day. For me, it's a maybe. With light usage, yes, but not if you use it like you could the Note 2.
2) Switching from the big screen to the small one has been a real challenge. I've caught myself looking at tablets a lot lately, and I never felt I needed one with the Note.
3) While pure android is nice, touchwiz is nice too. I consider them a toss up.
4) The Nexus 4 is a very nice device. It has good build quality, a nice screen, runs fast, and enabling LTE is easy (with T-Mo at least).
Bottom line, I'm seriously considering buying the Note 3 when it releases in the coming weeks, and keeping the Nexus as a backup. It's either that or getting a tablet, but I'd much rather continue to have 1 device.

might as well wait for the nexus 6, itll be even better than the 5 :silly:

It's different when there's maybe a 2 month wait vs. a 14 month wait. I'll be waiting for the 5.

Buy N4 and then sell it off resale value will ofc be good till N5 is released.

Well, I have a gnex and a nexus 4, and the nexus 4 is a massive improvement over the gnex, however I'm not sure a nexus 5 phone will be a massive leap over the nexus 4 unless klp is more resource heavy. My n4 is buttery smooth and I even considered buying another one just because there only 200$ now. Go for the nexus 4 and you can probably resell it in a year for 200-300$ still

Goodbye sweet Nexus.

You have served me well. One day I shall return to the sweet pastures of a nexus phone, but until then I will be spending time with a Galaxy S II.
Its not that I don't love you, its just that I got an unavoidable deal on a galaxy. I will root it and install ICS on day one in your honor. I know you wouldn't have it any other way but to run stock android roms.
I will remember you my beautiful nexus. Take care.

I went from a Nexus One--> iPhone 4--> Galaxy S--> Galaxy S2--> Galaxy S2 Skyrocket 4G LTE--> Nexus S
Something is weird here... I just like the smaller form factor and stable ICS on the Nexus S. It is slower, but on the plus side the screen & sound are better than anything else with Voodoo on the Nexus S. I also sold the Skyrocket for $500 and bought the Nexus S for $140 = profit!
With some of the profit I picked up a Touchpad which I use for games & anything else that requires a bigger display or faster device.

Gn is the only phone I'd even consider trading for the ns. You just don't appreciate the value of a vibrant development community until you've spent some time in a crappy one. Plus I'd rather not deal with the kids, jackasses, and socially impotent weirdos that you find in your typical non-dev commercial device forums. I think a good community makes for a better atmosphere for development. With all the mods available, this phone is on par with any other devise on the market (in terms of general usability).
I don't consider A larger dual core phone that consumes more power and has less development to be an upgrade. The atmosphere and development for nexus is by far the greatest plus to me. Although I have most certainly slowed down on my flashing. The gs2 also has slimICS rom - so the same I have now and I probably won't change anytime soon.
The things about the screen are true. The pixles are much bigger in the gs2 then the ns too.
But to brag a bit I'm getting the galaxy brand new unlocked for $200. So I can hold on to both phones and muck around till I make up my mind to decide which to sell. I suppose if I sell the galaxy I could make a profit...
Ultimately the idea was to get new phone to tide me over till the next nexus because I'm actually not the biggest fan of the galaxy nexus. The look plus the screen can be iffy.

I sold my Nexus S and bought the Galaxy Note. I won't be returning to the Nexus series until they stop releasing them in multiple sku's/variants which ended up fragmenting the ICS updates to the Nexus S.
Need an example? Go onto gsmarena.com and in the search box type Galaxy Nexus, immediately 4 variants show up in the results.
In the meantime I'll just enjoy my samsung phablet

I actually ask myself the same question. "Is that big purchase of the new device justified for a sake of some improvements (but not so overly dramatic)?".
I realise Note2 will come with 4 core processor, slightly bigger screen and perhaps Spen functionality ironed out and maybe better battery life. But how much all these improved features will affect my daily use. The more I think about it the less I'm convinced that I should switch...

None of the features that have leaked are worthy for NOTE users to switch. I mean sure from a Gnex or an S3... but the NOTE is still one of the most advanced smartphones out there.

Completely agree. I bought my Note 2-3 months ago, and sure i'd like to have Note 2, but lets be honest, throwing loads of money away just to get quad-core cpu ( which i probably won't even notice in my daily use ) is just...well...not very smart, unless you have a lot of cash you can spend for whatever you like, then i guess there's no discussion here. Will definitely buy Note 2, but probably in a year or so.

[Q] Should I buy a Nexus 4 with it being almost a year old?

I've been debating buying a Nexus 4 for awhile. At this point, do you guys still think its worth it? I've heard rumors that they might be coming out with a new model this year, plus we have the GS4 and the HTCOne coming out very shortly. Do you guys think its worth the money? I really like the OS, no carrier stuff in it. Plus I'm off contract with ATT, so I dont have to worry about that, ill have good service.
-Thanks
I would still buy it. The N5 is still a rumour and anyway regardless if it does come out you'll always get OS updates before Samsung and HTC.
Maybe wait for a while for the much rumoured Motorola x? Nexus 4 is worth the money. You get what you paid for. Except for sd card and battery life, everything about this is excellent! I am overlooking the camera cuz no one should expect a dslr quality image from a mobile phone.
I am very happy with my nexus 4. Whoever I show it to, is really pleased with design of this device. They have never heard of this phone. In fact the nexus line. Imho, if you look for features on a smartphone go for Samsung, if you look for pure stock experience with updates and support go for nexus 4.

Heavy?????? I wouldn't say so at 139 grams.
It is hard to me to get any other android phone these days. I used to work at sprint and hated that they weren't going to have nexus 4, galaxy nexus was just too old at the time and with no voice and data...
I have used gs3 and one x plenty, neither work as well as stock android. Touch wiz is buggy and takes away core features while adding new ones that don't work too well, aside from being very laggy compared to stock.
Sense is not bad, but multitasking on it is horrific, even if you root it.
Both aren't great with software updates, HTC ones never come and Samsung ones end up buggy in most cases.
Motorola ui thus far is too inferior to even consider. Point is, no thing really compared to stock in my opinion. You may see much better benchmarks on gs4 but I doubt day to day it'd prove as stable and smooth as n4.
So, to me... Yes, worth the money, specially considering you'd get one for less than $400 with no contract! My only major issue with n4 is the antenna, it is subpar compared to other devices, same was for gn.

Yeah, i just bought one. I hear the camera is pretty bad, but i never take pictures. I'm sure if i need to it will work for me. Everything else I've heard is positive. Can't wait to get it. I'm going to be going from LTE to HSPA again though, that should still be plenty fast for me.
lol @ almost a year old. April 13th will be 5 months. And yes i would suggest it if you like stock android. If your more into skins and bloat, go for the HTC one or the S4 at nearly double the price.
Yeah, that's my fault. I thought they came out last summer, didn't know they were that new yet. I'm just tired of all the manufacturers screwing with the phones, and the constant problems. Plus the fact that you never see updates, ever. I have a OneX now, and im so tired of how sluggish and slow it is. Plus i have constant problems with it anymore.
Just hoping this is a good move. I can't wait to get it and start using it.

updates are immediately, you will never regret a Nexus phone
I've asked myself the same questions as yourself before buying myself the nexus 4.
First, looking at timeline of nexus device releases, I've noticed it releases one at every year. So i assume the next nexus phone will only be here by November-December 2013 even if it will be announced at the May Google I/O.
Galaxy S4 is indeed a great device specwise (even better if you can get the 8 core version). But for me, it's still not a Nexus device, the build quality must be inferior to the current Nexus 4 (based on S3), looks exactly like the S3 which is EXTREMELY popular device (not unique), and the Nexus 4 is much more affordable priced.
HTC One, the only thing that will attract me over the nexus 4 is the full aluminum body. Not a Sense fan. That's it.
So with all those, i ended up with the Nexus 4 and I don't regret it.
Its not even halfway to a year old. Its not outdated hardware. S4 Pro is still one of Qualcomms fastest chips. and the Snapdragon 600 uses the same gpu "Adreno 320"
Almost a year? N4 might be too complicated for you.
And yeah google will release another nexus phone...probably 7months from. The N4 is still the best android phone out and it is the best out of the box android device I've used in 4yrs of android by far.
Its blazing fast despite using an older soc. Faster as there's hardly any overlay on it. Next phone will probably be the X phone which will rumoured boasts the S800 which will be fast but the N4 is no slouch.

Want to buy Nexus 4. Still a good device?

Hey guys,
I am thinking about getting a Nexus 4 to replace my HTC Sensation. The Sensation has many problems such as huge battery drain and it gets extremely hot during usage. So I thought the Nexus 4 would be a great idea. Pure Android (huge fan of that, was using CM for a long time on my Senny) and Google Support sound good and the price seems to be okay to (I could buy a 16GB variant for about 310€).
Is this phone great? Is it still worth buying considering it's already nearly a year old? Does it have some know problems such as huge battery drain or display problems?
I need this phone for browsing, using the calendar, writing emails/sms and sometimes taking photos. I don't play any games on it except 4 pictures 1 word.
Thanks in advance!
I too came from a Sensation, and it's a fine upgrade, for all the reasons you mention. Perhaps not as durable as HTC's build quality, so be sure to include a decent cover (I use the Diztronic TPU and it looks factory) to protect that beautiful glass. It's a joy to use..you can't go wrong. Cheers!

Honestly, if that is all you use your phone for, you should get the Lumia 1020. But if you want to stay with Android and can wait 4 more months, the 5th Nexus will be out then and should the price be as low as the Nexus4, then it would be better to get that.

The Lumia 1020 would be out of the price range. I'd never pay 400€+ for a phone I only use for work. I probably can't wait till the next release because the Senny really bugs me. I can't use a phone which burns in my hand because it's getting extremely hot while chewing through battery like nothing. My Sensation barely gets through the day with moderate use.

I can't sincerely tell someone to purchase a 7 month old device when knowing a faster device will come for the same price in due time.
Well you can go on buying Nexus 4, everything is a beauty when you compare prices and then it is a google phone so it always have it perks.
If you think you should wait for nexus 5 then its not very much pretty soon bcz this time google launched s4 and htc one as google variant which means next nexus will take time.
Your tasks which u need to perform as you have mentioned would all be performed very well.
Tip I can give even for better battery.
Unlock the bootloader, use custom recovery such as CWM and flash CM 10.1 stable releases which ever is latest.
Find franco kernel and flash that and for better colours use its colour profile.
You will have an outstanding experiance with great display and great battery time.
Best of luck.

People will and should buy the device that suits their needs and the price they are willing to pay.
If you want a unlocked / contract free phone the device is a good choice
The entire motion that a new device will be out in a couple months is pointless. He wants a phone now. A couple months is just that. A couple months living with a phone he doesn't want. Then when the next nexus device comes out there will be the next best thing on the horizon.

Sitting around waiting for 4 plus months for a device is just stupid.
Why buy a HTC one now? The plus version is coming? Why by a s4 now? The advanced or whatever version with the 800 is coming in a couple of months.

To each their own, I cannot speak for the needs of TC nor their personal interests. Whether he's comfortable with waiting X months is currently unknown and has not been divulged in this topic, so we can agree to disagree.
He said he probably can't wait for the next release because his phone bugs him.
Even a device like the HTC first would suit him fine hardware and software wise. Not unlocked and cheap of course ( don't even think it launched outside the US or unlocked) but just talking the device itself
There are plenty of users who are not concerned with the I can read the spec sheet pissing matches. Wait for the latest and greatest chip so they can have a higher score in benchmarks etc.
Its definitely still worth buying full price. Its a great device especially if you're a fan of stock android like you said.
Happy phoning.
I really don't need high specs. Benchmarks never intersted me because at the end you probably won't feel any difference between for example the snapdragon 600 and the snapdragon 800 in everyday use. I just want the phone to work well without stuttering and without any hick ups.

If you need a phone now, just go for it. If you are not in a hurry, you can wait and see what comes up. IMO I usually don't want the first batch of the phone anyway since they are usually the ones with problems.
just buy it
I highly recommend nexus 4.. Believe me it's as smooth as HTC one out even better..
Root and flash cyanogenmod and Franco kernel... That made me a delighted user from a happy user...
Besides it'll have developer support for hell lot of a time to come... Even after people forget about HTC one and s4..
:good::good:
I'm going to buy it at the end of August and I think it is still worth it. However reading this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2259334 scaried me!

[Q] Get N4 now or wait for N5

I had bought a N4 in January this year and gave it to my cousin last month. Now I'm using her aged Galaxy S and need to upgrade sooner or later.
The N4 still looks to be the best phone for my needs, but I'm also intrigued by the possible N5 in a couple of months.
Shall I get the N4 now or wait for N5 for 2-3 months?

Either way you could probably wait for the N5 come out before you decide on anything because if you get the N4 it'll be cheaper when the N5 is out or get the N5 if you decide you like it.
You can always wait for the next big thing or you can buy right now what you want.

N4 was good but is actually dated now, IMO. These things have very short lives at the top. Get a newly announced phone.

No LTE, a not so great camera, and pretty bad battery do make it a bit dated. The software runs great on the N4. But there are some definite hardware limitations that need to be upgraded.

LTE is easily achievable for someone with technical skills. I also don't really like the battery and the lack of an SD card.
NExus 4 is still a good phone. I got one about six weeks ago and it's great for me.
It all just depends on what you want and how long you are willing to wait. I have no idea when the N5 will be announced, but if you think you can wait for it to come out, then wait. Even if you decide you'd rather go with the N4, then you can get it cheaper when the N5 rolls out. Either way, if you wait you win, you either get the newest device or you get a still pretty good phone on the cheap.
Of course, if you can't wait, you are still getting a pretty good phone in the N4.
In my opinion, in the end either way you come out with a pretty good phone.

If you had thrown in the lack of SD card argument you would've hit every reason people were telling us to not get the phone on launch day.

LTE only works on band 4 which is rarely used in the US except on T-Mobile. AT&T only use band 4 in a few places. This is not a LTE phone for 99% of people.

I love my N4 but it is lacking in hardware compared to many of the latest phones. I will certainly be updating when the new Nexus comes out later this year.
I'm now on my 3rd nexus 4 because the Sammy s4 and the HTC one just didn't do it for me. After I brought them .
The nexus 4 won't be outdated for a long time. All this jargon about more cores...ghzzzz...ram.... Etc will make nothing any more then what it can already do. The n4 runs like a gem. My battery is lasting more then 22 hours. Screen is perfect. Memory is suffient. Ram is fine. Speed is awesome. Camera is great with some tweeks. Lte runs fine.
The only reason ppl change soon is because of advertisement and bigger numbers mean better ... Comparing my n4 to an s4 I had its so much more smoother and better on most tasks.
Hell even the galaxy nexus is still a cracking phone.
Get the n5 if you feel it will bring more into your life. I can bet most of its features will be portable asap....
Either way a nexus is a great phone.

The biggest gripe about the device is probably the storage. Hardly getting by with the 16gb since I use it for music as well. Have about 1gb of space left which I reserve for downloading roms and whatnot and I barely have any music stored on it. Lack of LTE out of the box was also a pain for a couple months before I decided to go on XDA forums since I am on T-Mobile. If T-Mobile is in your area and you have good coverage, no reason not to switch to them since they don't have contracts and have the cheapest unlimited plan. Either way, just wait for the N5 announcement so you can either get the N5 if you decide that you want better features right out of the box or get the N4 and save a bunch of money.
Grow up.. do a market research and decide for yourself.. seriously.. ppl want everything told to them these days..

What exactly is outdated?!
Two things that You can get "better" with newer phone:
1) FHD screen (why do You need this? N4 screen is HQ allready)
2) More pixels to camera (and as You know - more pixels doesn't mean BETTER camera)
Nexus 4 is great phone but you can think htc one or s4 if you have money to buy them.

This is why I'm starting to hate the android mainstream community, all you talk about is the Latest HTC or Samsung Device and brag about specs...those are not the only phones available,..I don't know how apple people stand that **** either

My two cents. I knew about the moto x, and possible nexus 5 but I went with the nexus 4 because its well-known inside and out. Pure Google, or nodded Google for us modders, and its half the price(or a quarter of the price through T-Mobile) than the "latest and greatest" which honestly aren't that great. I get in the 20k mark on antutu, only to be beat out by the one and s4. The camera isn't that bad, and its loads better than some of my older phones, and most importantly no skinning or waiting for updates.
The nexus 5 honestly will probably be slightly better but I love my nexus 4. I'd say go for it now as the new phone may have another guarded Qualcomm chip. At least this one isn't so guarded.
