[Q] Android 4.3 for GS4 GT-i9500? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybodie!!
Well i start this thread just because i´ve allready searched the web quite long enaugh to find out no concrete answer about that if is it possible and secure to upgrade my GS4 GT-i9500 from 4.2.2 samsung touchwizz ROM to the google play edition 4.3 pure android ROM.
I'm awared that some hardware features as some of the sensors are not fully exploited, but i´m an old android user and i'm new on samsung, and the truth is that i miss pure android. I dont use most of the touchwizz features anyway.
I just want a simple, neat and beatiful android phone with the power of the GS4. The thing would be simplier if i'd live in the US, i´d probably just buy the google play edition and lalala. But it's not available in my region. So the only chance i got is to modify my classic GS4 to get what i want.
There are some forums on the web that provide the way to do it, but i don't trust them just because those methods aren´t published here, the place i consider the most reliable one to get info about anything related to these matters.
I´ll be very thankfull if someone can help me.

Well unfortunately, since you have the GT-I9500, which is the octa-core version, you cannot install any of the Google edition Roms for your device as those Roms are for the Qualcomm snapdragon 600, which is the GT-I9505, so unless someone ports it to your specific device, no you cannot install 4.3 unless you want a shiny brick

To get yourself a pretty clean Android experience. Try CyanogenMod 10.2 for the 9500. Its stability is improving quite fast and its suitable to use as a daily driver as of now. It's just the camera thats not working. But apart from that you get Jelly Bean 4.3 and a super clean and fast UI.
Its worth it!

Yep looking forward to this to. I have been running Siyah Kernel for a couple of weeks and it's great to be able to switch between the stable stock based rom and CM10
Yep same as on the Nexus 7 forums too, looking forward to having 4.2 AOSP on both my Galaxy S3 and Nexus 7:laugh:

Won't take long to CM10-4.2 get released. I guess 4.2 uses the same base and stuff, so won't be a problem. Still, I may stick with Samsung. I love CM10 but not CM10 for i9300. Colors doesn't look good, laggy and a lot of random bugs.
Looking forward to it. Unfortunately cm10 on i9300 is beyond the team's control . If Samsung took their thumbs outta their asses and start releasing the RIGHT source and docs for Xynos, we might actually get somewhere. Its a miracle we've come this far without it.

I see a lot of people comment that Touchwiz ROMs run more smoothly than CM based builds. This is exactly the opposite of my experience. I find the Cyanogen team's work to be second to none, which is remarkable considering they're volunteering their time.

It's freaking me out a bit that my Verizon Galaxy Nexus will get a 4.2 custom ROM before my Nexus 4. WTF?
With the CM vs TW ROM debate, is there one Vanilla ROM that you think proves that theory that they run smoother and faster because I'd love to test it if there is one. I've always also felt that TW runs smoother? Maybe I'm wrong. Is LiquidSmooth a good example?

I think that comment probably did that more than anyone else's. I think it's a perfectly valid part of the discussion. I'm not suggesting we sit here and go back and forth on ROM names. But I'll ask my question in a different way. What is it about the AOSP release that's out there now that isn't working well that will be improved by this 4.2 release? Ultimately, this isn't about one ROM base vs another it's about whether AOSP can be made to work bug-free with the I9300 hardware, isn't it?

I believe it's also to do with what new FEATURES have been added to the new AOSP release and less to do with how much stability it will add (since that is dependent more on Samsung releasing the source than what AOSP has to offer in terms of stability).
Some of us would like to make use of the new features of 4.2 and not have to wait for an official Samsung update.
Having said all this, at the end of the day, that's my point of view and I don't expect everyone to agree.

Woot, the race is on!

Just bought my S4...

And I am completely overwhelmed by how good this phone is!
I've been away from XDA for a very long time and figured I'd come back and see what the community is like for the S4.
Hopefully I'll be able to contribute towards this awesome phone on here, somehow.
Thanks

Great, welcome! Now all you need to do is to root and rid your phone from the god-awful TouchWiz framework!
(The above reflects my opinion only. Of course you might like TouchWiz (I mean the UI, not the launcher with the same name))

Coming from a Galaxy Nexus, I wouldn't possibly think you'd like TW.
The vanilla rom is awesome. Running it right now and it's great albeit a little feature-less. I'll run this until I dare jumping to CM
(The vanilla rom I'm running is the m3dd0g's v2 one together with the proper kernel by Ausdim, in case you wanna try those out)
m3dd0g's rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2340783
Ausdim's kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342298
Do not try Android 4.3 if you want root. In can currently not be rooted and it's almost exactly the same as 4.2 (the 4.3 one is a leak so it's expected to act funnily and not have a lot of features).
Cheers.

27AUG2013 We need more Android 4.2 ROMS

Android 4.3/CM10.2 ROMS are growing in number, and many former Android 4.2 and CM 10.1 ROMS have been evolved into the newer builds. Problem is that Graphic Glitches on Android 4.3 for Samsung Exynos phones are substantial, and they make the user experience quite unstable and at times very irritating.
We need developers to continue updating 4.2 ROMS with the latest features (e.g. Focal, HALO2, etc...) for a while until the Graphic glitches on 4.3 ROMS are dealt with sufficiently. Maybe a new PA or CM 10.1 ROM would be a good place to start. Current 4.2.2 ROMS still being developed lack many new features and recent updates.
Thanks for everyone who helps. If you agree with the idea, press THANKS below to show the number of those interested.

Try out SlimRom build 8. It's 4.2.2 and stable, fast and battery friendly and include all the customization options you need.
With that said I would also like to say that my modded stock and odexed 4.1.2 is working like a charm and nothing beats it.
Try developing yourself and you will know how difficult it is. Just begging and demanding don't work. Go fork some repos and port 4.3 changes back into 4.2
And the issue of graphic glitches is not anyone's but Samsung's fault because they haven't released updated GPU drivers. And non of the 4.3 Roms mentioned stable so such glitches are expected.
If you are not satisfied with whats avilablr then either make your own stuff or suffice with whats available.

Android 4.4.2 KitKat

What do you think about the new android version. In my opinion, it's great , with better UI( if the leaked photos are true) , less RAM usage and new kernel. What do you think about the S2? Will Samsung update our phone ? In my opinion Samsung will not update the S2 or the Galaxy Ace or Mini...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
No they will not update our phone. And im also not too sure about new kernel. We do have dorimanx kernel which is light years ahead of most kernels... We have 3.12.rc1 while the Nexus have 3.4?
I don't thing Samsung will just think about updating the S2
It's an old device, it still an amazing device though
But updating it will not benefit Samsung
So no updates

Huh I find no issue with 4.2.2, its the best thing yet! We have spent so much time optimzing 4.2.2 that it is so stable and usable. Fast forward to 4.3 which is much newer we have spent much less time on it so for sure it is not as good. However I dont understand which part of either these versions, 4.2.2 or 4.3 is bloated care explaining? Even if Android 4.4 has so called less RAM usage and kernel improvements it would not really matter to us. Take kernel changes for example. We can't just port AOSP code and use it for our devices correct? Remember the time when we only had official 4.0 and 4.1 was released by Google. Everybody wanted Project butter. Due to Sammy not giving us official 4.1 and its source code on time (thank god they actually gave the source code..) we would never have gotten close to full project butter experience which we still lack fully. So if Sammy does not give us what we need then we can use 4.4 without its so called perks like "less RAM usage"
Yeah 4.4 should have lower hardware requirements. However, it doesn't matter because our exynos device still lacks proper drivers. That's worsen by the fact that we currently have no Galaxy S2 devs left working on CM to port new android versions to our device

TouchWiz is horrible
This phone, the screen, battery and cpu are WOW, but TouchWiz is horrible. The Pull down menu... 1/3rd of it is taken up by the time, settings buttons, toggle buttons, brightness and what WiFi I'm connected to.. the other 2/3rds? Taken up by 1 e-mail. Of course Samsung realizes people with a powerful business phone like this only get 1 message at a time so they make it nice and easy to read. So then the gallery... every time I'm in the gallery there is a yellow flower icon in the top left. Why? Samsung knows $700 top of the line pocket computer owners like bright flowers. The blank faces in messaging and contacts are downright ugly, seriously who approved that? Luckily I have Samsung Apps, Samsung Link, Samsung Hub and Samsung InApp Purchase to keep all this NFC S-Beam fist bumping super assistant S-Voice Jedi hand waving air command motion hover pen magic in order!
Everyday I check XDA in hopes of any news....
My Order:
1. MIUI
2. AOSP/CM
3. Sony
4. LG ?
5. HTC
6. Samsung

Chainfire is involved in Omni and although he's not a ROM developer (as far as I'm aware), he does have a Note 3 so fingers crossed he'll help push support for it.
As for AOSP, I think we're all waiting on the CM nightlies to pick up, after that other AOSP ROMs should appear soon. Hopefully.
