no email notifications? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey. Ever since the gmail app got that update (a long time ago) I don't get notifications of my new email in my notifications bar.
I have auto sync turned on. I didn't mess with any settings. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app but that didn't work either.
Any thoughts on what could have gone wrong? Or what I could do to fix it?

There is a bug where you don't get the notifications when using wifi network. Or you get them, but later. Also, you have to enable the notifications for every label in the new app.

This is how to fix it:
1.Open up the Gmail app.
2.Go to the folder you want to recieve notifications for(Inbox, social, etc).
3.Press the 3 little dots on the top to bring up the settings menu.
4.Choose Label Settings.
5.Change the settings to recieve notifications.
Do this for every folder you want to recieve notifications for.

I have all of these settings and about a month ago, gmail notifications stopped coming through. I've played around with some of the settings and nothing seems to be pushing the notifications through.

Sorry for the late reply. I was having the same issue as texaslittleangel where all my settings were as you guys suggested, but I still wasn't getting any notifications. I don't know what I did to fix it, but it's fixed now. Still, thanks for the replies!

[Q] Facebook Notifications????

Just today I started receiving facebook notifications on the top notification bar but I have never signed into facebook from the phone. I also checked the website and all of my notifications are turned off. I only get them when someone sends me a message and when I drag the bar down and click on it nothing happens. It is becoming really annoying so I would greatly appreciate any help.
If its popping under notifications then it would be because of a facebook app that u must of signed into at one point in time and to shut off notifications go into the face book app when the app loads push back sp yr at the screen of fifteenth options then just click the button next to the home button to bring up setting witch u can fix in there or just easily sign out

I have never signed into the Facebook app on the phone. In fact, I just did a factory reset after I had to SBF back to froyo to install the pre-rooted gingerbread. I even tried deleting the facebook app and still got the notifications. It shows up like an email notification, but with the email when you click on it it opens the email. With this notification, if you click on it, it just goes away but nothing else happens.
Then I have no clue of how to help u but if u don't have anything installed on ur phone yet u could all ways try to do another factory reset

I never said I didn't have anything on my phone; I did a factory reset a week ago and since then I have installed alot of the apps/games I had prior. Facebook was one of the apps I installed, but I never signed in. Never before today have I received these notifications. I didn't think it was the facebook app since I never signed in, but I deleted it anyway and still got the notification. This would lead me to believe it is not linked to the actual facebook app itself. Within the past day, I have done anything that would lead me to believe it was behind these notifications.
Did you add a Facebook account through Blur? That is another possibility as the built in account system sends you notifications for some things, including messages.

Yes, but the reason I didn't think it was that is because the notifications just began yesterday and I have received messages prior to that with no notification. Do you know where I can get to the settings for that? When I go into "My Accounts" and click on Facebook it only gives me the option of removing account.

How to turn off "log in to sync applications" every time I reboot?

Just got my stock AT7T S4 yesterday. I immidiately rooted and unlocked it. Only a small problem I ran into so far is that every time I restart the phone, a notification for Facebook "log in to sync applications" from Samsung keep popping up. I went and sign in, then remove the account under "Sync" and it still popping up. How do I get rid of the problem?
Appreciated the help in advance guys! :good:

Having the same thing. Very annoying.
Settings -> Accounts -> Facebook -> Uncheck Sync Contacts
That should do it.
(BTW, this post made me sign up for XDA, so thanks! )
EDIT: One more step, just in case. I found the Facebook Account in the Android Accounts section to work, but just in case.
Enter Facebook -> Settings -> Sync Contacts -> Don't Sync
Again, I think I did the Facebook one before and I still got those messages to sync accounts. The Android Sync Facebook options had to be set too.
Titanium Backup. Freeze FNS. Should have a Facebook icon next to it.

Hmm.. Disabled it in both but it still pops up every 3-4 days... also don't see FNS on the Titanium Backup list
It's sns that you want to disable, should have a Facebook icon next to it.

I was having this problem too, and the developer's suggestion didn't work for me. This notification pops up every time I turn on or restart my tablet. Hold your finger on the notification itself until an "app info" button appears. They make this somewhat unstable, so it took me several attempts, but I was finally able to press the "app info" button. It doesn't like to load either, so keep trying. Once it does load, you'll find a check box. Click it to discontinue those naggy notifications. The app info is titled Facebook SNS.
I also organized my notifications inside Facebook and noticed some from Samsung and Galaxy were in there. Open Facebook > Settings > Account Settings > Notifications > App Notifications. Uncheck any unwanted notifications there as well.

[Q] Gmail not working

Starting last night Gmail does not push any email to my phone. Any ideas what happened? Could I have stopped a process that it needs(not Gmail app)?
Did you check your settings? Not trying to be am a$$. Only reason I ask is cause Ive run the root process twice on my Note 3 so far. First time everything was fine. Second time I had to sign in tp google twice, and sync for gmail and other sync options weren't checked

I had this issue. I turned on WiFi and it started to push my emails. I turned it off and it seemed to work fine.
I tried it but it did not seem to work although I was not connected only had WiFi on.
I had this happen too. I had to go into gmail settings, and then click on my email addy. On this page go to the "manage labels" button and make sure your boxes are set to sync and notify. I use like 5 different inboxes so I had to enable sync for each one. It took me forever to find this and I was going insane trying everything to enable sync. I still have no idea what causes this activity.
I've had this happen on galaxy devices. I usually go to Gmail and clear and restore defaults then that usually fixes it. If not then go to accounts and sync and disable sync then re-enable it. One of those should work

I saw that the notify flag was off so I turned it on. I will see if that fixs the problem.

Double Gmail notifications

Cracks the lcd screen on my S4 so was forced to replace it with a new S5
First couple days were spent getting it set up the way I wanted. Seems that while tweaking setting I changed something that has caused me to start getting two sets of notifications for gmail. Strange thing is, they never quite track. One shows 4 new emails and the other 3. If I go into Gmail and turn off notifications both go away.
Anybody have any idea why this would occur or how to fix it.
is there any chance you set up your email using 2 different mail client app?

Not consciously. I only have the gmail app and aquamail set up on my phone. And aquamail only has my home email. Both of the notifications are showing gmail. If I tap the notifications they both take me to gmail.
go to application manager and clear data of gmail, then run it again to see if it fix your problem

Anyone else having trouble with Gmail sync?

Intermittently with the the Gmail app I will go hours without receiving any email notifications, and it often isn't until I get a notification on my iPad that I even think to check the phone to see emails from the day before! Apparently there's a bug report in the tracker, but I was wondering if there was any kind of workaround you guys have tried. This is a crippling bug for me.

I was having the same problem, but after performing a factory reset sync started working again. Then shortly after, I installed the January security update... no problems since.
I've had problems after the December update. Finally had to disable "battery optimization" for gmail. That fixed my sync issues. I got real irritated by getting email notification hours or even a day late

Under main settings go to battery, then in the 3 dots menu click "battery optimization" and then you will see a drop down arrow. Select all apps and then scroll down to gmail and turn of "optimization"
I might have to try the above. I wasn't able to use the phone much today, but when I came home, my PC showed 19 emails on Gmail. NONE of them appeared to sync on the app & I had no clue I had this many, or any for that matter. This has been a persistent issue for about a month or so.
The above settings didn't seem to do anything for me. I just got 20 emails in from 6am this morning until now. I wonder if using inbox by google produces the same issues.

Interesting. It's quite the annoying problem. I've had only 1 time with delayed notifications since turning off doze for gmail. I did read that it has not worked for some. I periodically turn airport mode on and then off.... At least once a day just to make sure I'm getting my messages
Guys its not about battery optimized..its about new gmail apk.either move to inbox by google or go.to settings of gmail under notifications sound vibrate etc u ll see notify in every message or u can choose once a day once a week or a month to take notifications.. U can thank me later ?
^yep, mine was also unchecked! Good catch!

Thats not the actual problem though. Ive always had that box unchecked with all my phones because i would get a message (be alerted) deal with that message allowing gmail to then alert me of the next message.
All checking that box is gonna do is if Gmail fails to notify you of the 1st message but then trys once you receive the 2nd or 3rd etc you will be alerted.
Needless to say i am also having the problem.
Appears this is a known problem with Nexus devices (probably a combo of Nexus/Marshmallow)
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/Ayd_1TOemSE
Hopefully its only the app that needs tweaking and not the OS itself so we dont have to wait forever and a day for the update.

That's NOT the problem. Mine are checked for every message and I still had delays.... Until I turned off optimization. And even that hasn't 100% fixed it.
Turning off optimization also fixed it for me. It gets stuck in doze I think. Google still has some bugs to work out.
Looks like the problem was server side and a fix is being rolled out

It's better than it used to be. But still doesn't refresh in doze at times. Lots of stuff breaks during doze it seems lol. Nice feature but buggy. Android will always have some new buggy feature though. Been that way since I joined Android in the eclair days.
