Razr i killer - RAZR i General

See the specs of Sony Z1 honami mini...
This phone is gonna be just what our beloved Razr i failed to be.
High end specs on small form factor, as it's snapdragon 800 it should be far more popular than our intel device :'(
I aldready dream about snap and smooth MIUI on my small honami
Well I love the Razr i, but I really miss toying with it like my previous phone, roms, tweaks, goodies and... MIUI...

this post is really useless

I guess not, people here like small form factor devices, that's part why they got a Razr i, so this could be usefull for some people, we're in general discussion, not dev

Well yes, its his opinion, for me, i dont like sony :/, and my razr i, kick ass on every test
Enviado desde mi XT890 usando Tapatalk 4

I do understand you. I have a Razr i because of its compact size and I was hoping for a more powerful phone that keeps this reasonnable size.
I put a lot of hope in the Z1 mini to be my next phone

Was looking to buy a xperia z to replace my RAZR I as I want a cyan phone again. But now knowing there will be a z1 mini that's the phone for me.

How curious.
Having the powerful and compact Razr i already, now I want a BIG smartphone!
I like Sony smartphones a lot, and the Z1 Mini will be nice, but I'm hopping to buy the Xperia Z Ultra! Haha
I can't understand the reason why people even miss custom ROMS like CM or MIUI as, for me, they only add a little on what the phone already is... :/ And that "little" is not a deal breaker.
Please kindly explain: "but I really miss toying with it like [I did with] my previous phone, roms, tweaks, goodies and... MIUI..." What do you exactly miss from those that you can't do nor have with the Razr i. What is that MIUI or CM provides that is so special??
My Razr i is working perfectly fine on stock ICS. I rooted it and tweak it a bit, disabling/uninstaling some apps, adding a couple of lines to build.prop, using the marvelous Directory Bind app, etc. It's near perfect! That's why I scratch my head and wonder what do people love so much from CM, MIUI and other popular custom ROMs? :/
The only thing that I miss is having an microHDMI port like my beautiful Xperia Pro had, and a custom ROM won't give me that.
- L.

I completely agree!
The razr i is a great phone. I am missing just LTE and 4.2.2 (because of the lockscreen widgets). If it had ip58 it would be perfect.

Xperia U or P?

Hey, well I've more or less broke the phone functionality on my Play (Bent pin inside sim tray) I really dont want to waste any more on repairing it... Anyways I've been looking at replacements and I'm stuck between the Xperia U and P. Right now I'm tipped more towards the P due to memory limitations on the U as I do tend to use quite a lot of storage space. I use a lot of apps, have a large music library etc. Also the P does have better specs but is it worth the price jump? Or do you think I should go with a different phone all together? Any ideas? Thanks
i think u should get another xperia play.
Xperia U Unlocked and brand new costs around $240, so that is a definite good deal to me.
The major bottleneck though is the internal memory of puny 4GB without SD Card slot.
If you keep lots of music and lots videos/games then this is not an option.
If you are ok with not so famous brand, then ZTE has viable options but not that I recommend it.
--
Maddy
i have bought the P why?
larger screen
whitemagic screen (really great)
more ram (more update proof)
more flash
Xperia P is very nice in every single detail but it's very expensive for it's features. You should get a galaxy nexus, that's what I would get

i wanted to buy the galaxy nexus.
i tried both (in the shop) and the xperia P is faster!
ok updates will take longer, but if development really starts it is a really great and fast phone.
screen is better the the galaxy nexus
faster
better camera

I'm getting an Xperia S down to the fact that it has 32GB internal storage compared to Xperia P's 16GB, I think now is the time that most of us Xperia 2011 users are considering a new device, I've had this device for a year tomorrow
I would get the Xperia P if it had at least expandable memory, Love the Xperia P aluminium case
Anyway I'm keeping my Xperia Play for gaming.
@OP: Get an Xperia P, More sexiii!!!!! No really it feels REALLY nice in the hand.
Xperia P really is sexy, it's certainly better than U so, here's your answer. But you didn't try GNexus with Jellybean did you? If you did Xperia P would't be certainly the fastest
i am sure when the P gets cm10 (very soon) it will be faster then gnexus and when the official jb comes (end of this year) it will still be faster
Thanks guys, I've tried the Gnexus and I don't think it's as smooth as the P. I think I'll go with the P for more or less the same reasons nick stated, I'm still keeping my play though
I'm thinking of getting an Xperia S in november because Devs have touchpads working on Xperia Ray, etc ports.
Anyway as I said get an Xperia P!
Nice, in fact I just ordered the S. I seen a really good deal that was to good to pass over so I went for it, can't wait
none of them , if you are gamer , if you aren't , then hyabusa or galaxsy s3 or HTC one X
Xperia go or acro S? If you dropped your phone much.xD

If you can live with touchscreen controls for games, I would personally go for the HTC One X.
I wouldn't touch another Sony handset because of their poor record with software updates, they also tend to be overpriced and underspecced.
Then dont go for htc
Their update support is even worse (look at dhd and some other phones)

Defy replacement?

hey guys!
so i've used the Moto Defy for a good amount of time now its body is dying and time for a new phone. what do you suggest guys? im looking for something tough and light similar to the Defy in construction but better in terms of HW and SW, preferably not a Motorola this time!
thanks!
Some Sony devices do have the rough and tough build quality just like our Defy. But my suggestion is to get a Nexus 4.
PS: Next time ask this question in the device suggestion thread on XDA. This will not only give you more response but it also keeps the Defy forum clean.

You're best off with the Galaxy Nexus, for optimal compatibility.
1st choices: HTC Butterfly or Nexus 4.
2nd choice: GSIII
3rd choices: GSII and GNex
I'm personally against buying LG, even if it's Nexus 4. In some cases it doesn't have 4G/LTE (And they said it would have it...they lied), and I honestly consider LG as being a pretty bad company. It might make you want a Moto again.
-Galaxy Nexus - if you don't mind the battery and the lack of microSD support, it's a go.
-HTC phones - some members complained about them lately not getting the ROM support they should get.
-Galaxy S3 - might be a good buy.
-Galaxy S2 - there was a version (I9100G) which if you get your hands on, you'll have a really nice support.
-Sony Xperia S - a good competitor to the S2. I really it, it has a LOT of custom ROM support, since Sony is possibly the best manufacturer which provides modding support for their phones.
My (personal) future decision: Sony Xperia Acro S. It's similar to the Xperia S, but it features microSD, a bigger battery (even if battery tests say otherwise, I'm sure that it can be modded) and it's waterproof and IP57 if I recall correctly. It's like a better Defy with custom ROM support. I have to say, currently the custom ROM database for it isn't that big, but I think it will become bigger in time.
Im justs tarting to look for a defy replacement, my Defy has outlive several cases, and it has, and sometimes still does get a bit of a battering, its even survived a cycle in a washing machine ( in a pocket)
So when it comes to a replacement it will be a waterproof/resistant dustproof device, but there doestn appaer to be much out there. The sony Acro S was never released in the UK, and it looks lie the other water/dust proof sony phones will go the same way. any sugestions?

I pretty much agree about LG being unreliable.
-HTC phones - ONLY get an HTC if it has S-OFF
-Galaxy S3 - As with HTC, devs are abandoning it or talking about abandoning it... and going to the Nexus 4. This is because Sammy's Exynos 4 chips are still closed source, and so devving for them is a PITA.
-Galaxy S2 - It's a bit outdated by now, IMO
-Galaxy Nexus - Like GS2, it's outdated.
-Sony Xperia S - Sony's recent AOSP commitments have been encouraging. But I find their devices to be grossly overpriced... and the new blocky squarish design language used in all new Sony phones (except maybe Xperia T/TL) is too unnatural and boring for me, TBH.
One addition: HTC One S - Dual core Krait, solid design, low price. Beautiful lower mid range phone, IMO.
I'm kinda on the fence here... I want cutting edge stuff... so I'm thinking of waiting for the GSIV which'll be an A15 phone... or for the HTC M7... but not too keen on Tegra 4... devs have the same issues with Tegra as they have with Exynos... only a lot more problems with Tegra.....
In the short term, I just might use my parents' T-Mo G2X or Sensation while waiting till MWC...
I think the best hardware with lifeproof capabilities, by now, is XPeria Acro S. Not sure about ROM support, but I took a look on its development section and it's plenty of custom kernels.
There is the Xperia V, Sony´s new rugged phone. It´s dual core but it´s the best rugged phone, i think.
If mine dies ,.....this time i would replace it with an used one from ebay ..........

Why go with locked up moto devices AGAIN?
If you have any plans of installing custom firmware on a new phone, I would advise against Moto...
If you don't want to customise the software, then, sure, Moto's hardware is pretty neat.
A colleague of mine bought an LG Prada which he then killed within a couple of weeks by water ingress.
That put him onto the path of waterproof phones, and he ended up ordering an Acro S from hong kong.
It's a nice piece of kit, and probably the closest thing to a modernised Defy. The Xperia V seems to be a minor update on the Acro S.

Hard choice? Sony Xperia Z or HTC One

Hi Guys!
After spending hours and hours on forum, test etc... I'm currently hesiting between the HTC One or Sony Xperia. I like both disign but I order the Xperia for the moment because good package in belgium. The phone + Bluetooth speaker + Dock for 649 euros.
But the HTC One processor seems better the Sony Xperia?
Please Help me in my choice :'(
Go for Xperia Z, it is better! Htc gives poor user support.
Sent from my E10i using Tapatalk 2
Ok But why it's better? I like both disign what about the processor? Snap Dragon 600 is better than the 400 Pro?
Obviously everyone on Z board will suggest you Z, and HTC One on One board. So ask this question in General forum.
But the best advice really is to test both devices yourself and get the one you like more. Simple as that
If you're sitting on your Phone and like to run Benchmarks all day then go for the HTC.
The processor of the XZ is more then sufficient. Making the choice due to a more overpowered processor seems odd

XZ has water and dust proof with cool camera. And much more functions! Even XZ has 400Pro, keep in mind that HTC Sense takes more memory and heavier.

Lol no I don't care about benchmarks Just bad experience with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. Lag ,.. even after changing the rom to cynogen mod.
And I come from the Iphone 5 so I'm hoping for the same fluidity experience than on IOS That's all
I like the "Aluminium" disign on the HTC One but the disign of the Sony Xperia Z White looks incredible too Both are great But just I can't wait until march for the HTC One except if there is a good reason

These are the biggest selling points for each when you compare the two:
Xperia Z
Lighter, more consistent skin
Praised, very slim design
Waterproof
SD slot
HDR Video
HTC One
Slightly faster
Better display (probably)
Special camera software (Zoe)
Better speakers
More internal memory
Aluminium body
Just take your pick. For me it was easy, the lighter skin of Sony adds a lot of functionality I really like (good Walkman and Album apps) while HTC's skin is a bit chaotic at times, almost like each app is designed by a completely different team. I don't have any experience with the HTC One in specific but this was the case on all past HTC's with Android and I don't expect it to have changed that much. If you prefer pure speed and hardware power the HTC One is probably the better choice.
If viewing angles and or speakers are important to you take the HTC else take the one you really want
Yeah true. Another point is on my iphone , when I have a call, I always have headshake. All the time. I check on the internet and I see that the DAS of the Iphone 5 is 0,92 and the Sony Xperia Z das is 0,55!!! Almost Half!
That's one of the reason why I want to switch to another phone cause I can't stay with my iphone next to my head more than 3 min or I directly have an headshake
4UP UltraPixel rear camera
If you don't really addicted to the 4UP UltraPixel rear camera and iPhone appearance and Sense TV, I think there is no need to change Sony Xperia Z to HTC One.
The BIG + of the Sony I think is that you have a SD Port. It Mean that you have have infinite Mémory. Have 2 or 3 SD Card of 32 Go with you in your wallet and store movies etc
Easy choice.
Xperia Z.
I had to Rma 3 one X's and although the screen was amazing and I did like sense, not enough to get me back.
Cant wait to get XZ.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Don't forget about battery life too mate and xperia z is better to me because it has expandable sd card slot
Sent from my GT-I9001 using Tapatalk 2
Hooo What do you mean? That the battery of XZ is better?
Yeah the sony look better and no need to wait 4 weeks And the welcome package is better. Bluetooth Speakers and Dock free
Really and truely this isn't going to help you decide I don't think.
My advice is like what I did myself is go and play with the two phones side by side and test everything out side by side and then decide which is better for you.
I could say One is better because XYZ but those could be for my needs not yours or person B will say Xperia Z again same thing that could be because that is what is suited to them.
The end of the day I am putting money into either HTC or Sony's pocket not the other way around - so there is no need for me to be biased about anything.
I know you right. It's just that It's also so difficult to switch from Iphone 5 to Android cause of my bad experience with the Samsung Tab 2 that I'm hesitate. Firstly I want to buy the XZ because I'm spending a lot of time on my smartphone and the screen of an iphone 5 is a little too small for me.
Now I like the disign of the XZ
Now the most important thing is XZ is the same in term of fluidity than the Iphone 5?? That's my main fear !
Someone says xperia z have hdr, ant htc one dont. That is fake.
Htc one have HDR, and even front camera have HDR.
Also this guys says sd card, that bunch of people talking what they dont even know what they thinking.
I got xperia s (32GB) i have 1500 songs various format, 3000pictures and 2-3 HD movies.
You know what? I got almost 8-10gb to waste. So thing with sd card as pros or cons tell your children not your self.
Sd card was problem before, when phones got low internal memory.

Xperia Z Development Potential

I got an Xperia Z the other day and....I love it to bits AND regret getting it. I love it because it's a looker and the UI is also close to AOSP. The fact that it's shock proof, dust proof and water proof helps a lot as I have to carry it to school everyday.
However, the phone really heats up, even if I'm generally browsing, watching videos or playing video games. By 'really' heats up, I mean the top part of it becomes extremely hot to touch, so much so that I often have to keep it aside to cool down. If I make a call immediately after this happens, my ear goes from pink to red. Also, the speakers, camera and screen colors are underwhelming to say the least.
What bothers me the most though, is the fact that this phone may never get 'offcial' custom rom support from popular devs, for example CM and AOSPA, because Sony are slow with updates, and with Key Lime Pie probably coming next month....I'll be disappointed if I'm unable to run it immediately on my phone. Now, I'm in no way asking developers to do this, but I'm asking if it'll be popular amongst developers in the long term. Sony are proactively supporting custom dev, but I don't know if that's going to help the XZ's case.
I'm coming from an HD2 and I regularly use my Nexus 7, so that might help you understand what I mean. I'll probably sell this and get a Nexus 4 / HTC One / Galaxy S4 depending on the replies I get in this thread. Please give me your honest opinions on this, thanks!

The heating issue is common because the device is thin and the processor is a beast. My previous phones had same issue, but I think this is normal because the chasis is thin and probably heat doesn't easily ventilate due to the water resistant feature, this is just a theory.
As for development, well the device has been available for about 2 months and already there are many custom roms for this. Personally, I am running the unofficial CM 10.1. Almost everything works expect for the camera yet and forgot to mention its very very smooth. There are great devs developing for this device and I think the future of this looks promising. Android 4.1 and the update 4.2.2 does almost everything and runs very smooth so why rush for next version. Sony has done a great job with their UI, unlike Samsung's girlish touchwiz UI.
All and all its a good phone, but ofcoz it needs improvement e.g. speaker, display. Then again no phone is perfect. If camera is not so important for you till it get fixed, try the unofficial CM 10.1, you will love it and its still in alpha stages of development.
The thing is Sony brings really good firmwares, it makes it hard for devs to make them even better. Actually Sony's firmwares are already completely optimized for the phone. It's not like Samsung with all the buggy releases.
About key lime pie, you won't see it on any device immediately after release, only nexus devices will get it really fast.

Well yes, I do need the camera. And I've been using a One X lately, the heat level isn't nearly as close to what my XZ produces. The One X does get warm, but not hot. I've also used an N4, which as far as I know has the same processor, and it doesn't heat up at all.

Well, that's fine but Sony are very slow with their updates. Even the Galaxy S2 has an official 4.2.1 update, which it received before the XZ was even released.
I like custom roms because of the amount of customization and choices they offer, plus the statusbar and navbar look ugly, and the navbar is particularly huge. I'd much rather have a buggy custom rom over a stable, ugly stock rom.

My phone heats up, sure I think any phone does this.
Mine doesn't heat up anywhere near you're describing. It gets pretty much mellow when browsing, and only warm when playing games
And it's stone cold when you're on the phone.
Try using a small. Case it will protect you from heat. Not the phone itself though x)
Also, once the groundwork is done for something like CM bringup, we don't have to wait for Sony. Not when we have the same SoC as the Nexus 4 AND we have CodeAurora.
Also, Sony is getting much better with updates for their newer devices.
Last but not least, Sony cooperates more with CM developers than any other manufacturer. A LOT of former Samsung developers moved over to Sony in the past few months - you DO realize that every single Exynos4 (International GS2/Note/GS3/Note2 devices) CM maintainer now owns a Sony except espenfjo? (espen has been too busy to take on new devices lately, and hasn't even really worked on his older devices either.)

Coming from a long range of HTC and Samsung devices I must admit that I don't have the same need for flashing a new ROM evry second day, to find out if there are less bugs or better battery capacity. The stock Xperia Z ROMs seems superior to any creation from Samsung or HTC
My phone last for two days, everything on autosync and almost 5h screen time. My S2 and S3 would have died more than 35h earlier with the same usage.
I'm now running this stock based custom rom with a locked bootloader. The XZ is by far my best smartphone experience ever.

Also, once the groundwork is done for something like CM bringup, we don't have to wait for Sony. Not when we have the same SoC as the Nexus 4 AND we have CodeAurora.

Wow, I did not know that. Does that mean we're going to get more custom roms on the XZ, than say, the HTC One or Galaxy S4? Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my questions.

I doubt it - just based on past experiences. Samsung will sell so many Galaxy S4 units that there's bound to be more custom roms than the Xperia Z. Flagship HTC devices generally have many custom roms as well, even without S-Off. Hopefully I'm wrong!

To be honest, after using CM for a long time on Samsung devices ( because Touchwiz... ) - I have to say that Sony XZ firmware is very close to AOSP. Very light with minimal amount of modifications. That's how you make an Android skin. I haven't even rooted my device because frankly i don't see the need to do it right now. Just waiting for fully working CM, then i'll try it.

No. You'll definitely see more custom Roms for Galaxy S4. Samsung is, and for a while will be much more popular than Sony. They'll sell huge amount of S4 - there's no doubt about it.
But quantity doesn't equal quality. Look what devs like Entropy have to say about this. We can expect CM working flawlessly on XZ after a while, which was impossible on certain Samsung phones due to lack of sources. So i'd rather have one, fully working CM release than 25 barely working "custom roms" that are no different from each other anyway.
Exactly!!!

You want fast updates? Get a nexus. Tge Z doesn't live up to your expectations? Sell it and buy something else.

Thanks a lot for your valuable inputs, captain obvious!
On a serious note though, thanks a lot for all your suggestions, guys. Keep 'em coming. I think I'm going to keep the Z, can't get myself to sell it.

Maybe this time SGS4 won't have so many custom roms...

The perfect smartphone?

I have been a long time android user and have changed a dozen smart phones from HTC to Samsung to Lg, etc(not a fanboy of any) in the past few years.. While impressive, each phone had one major short coming( HTC one's camera, s4s build quality etc)..
I decided to give Sony a try with the z2 a week ago, and have been thoroughly impressed by this phone. Everything on the z2 is top notch(screen, camera, battery life, build, speakers, water proof, SD card support, lag free ui)...
I can't understand why z2 is not a popular device in the market? Everyone I know uses s5 or m8 or iphone.. Is it due to the lack of marketing by Sony?
It kinda is lack of marketing although the z2 was sponsored by the world cup so it should be widely known.
But your right everywhere I go for some reason I'd be the only one with a sony z2. Soo many people will have never heard of this thing it's strange.
However I really don't mind this because this means we have a unique phone. We know its a damn good phone and we keep it that way. it's others that will be missing out on something special.
Hopefully your screen doesn't crack on its own like 100 of others.
I have my Z2 for one month and half now, and i used to change like every month my phone... I can't tell you that i'm fully satisfied with this phone ! It has everything i request from a smartphone.
The only one thing i'm missing is a bigger screen.. Coming from Note 3 (5.7"), Sony Xperia Z Ultra (6.4"), Huawei Mediapad X1 (7")... It's quite hard for me sometimes to enjoy at the screen easily...
So i was really disappointed when Sony shown his Z3 series instead of a new Z Ultra with the same quality from the Z2
Let's hope devs will succeed to port some news stuff from Z3 to our Z2 !
Im also womdering of the whereabouts of Z2 even Sony old flagships. Even on reviews they barely mention or compare sony.

As for me it is great phone with vastly improved in software and hardware but not yet perfect. It can be considered as smartphone of the year.

The Z2 is the closest thing to a "perfect" phone I've come across so far. However, the simple fact of the matter is, it's just too big. That is its one major flaw.
Fortunately, the Z3 Compact looks like the perfect phone (for me, at least). Looking forward to selling my Z2 and picking up the Z3 Compact, as it will combine all the great features of the Z2 with the smaller size I'm looking for.
I do wish the Z3 Compact had 3 gigs of RAM like the Z2/Z3, but I guess I can live without that extra RAM.

Sony problem is less advertising than for example Samsung. (I respect htc but i don't like it cause they try to be iphone of android world! in my opinion)
+ huge ignorance of users...!
i m talking about what people thought about Xperia Z display quality and after that Z1
there were lots of rumor (for me non of them true!) that people always asking about them here in xda and other forums
for example
(with my old account on xda) i made a thread about Sudden Death of Xperia Z. After few weeks Sony solved that problem with firmware update. But after ~2yrs people check that forum and post something !!!
I mean they read rumors and believe but never try to read more technical.
for Galaxy S4 i remember that show with music, dancing and ..... from Samsung !!! (i did hate that!)
But Sony made a conference introduced Xperia Z and its features + technical info >> The End!
so eyes of normal users won't turn to Sony from Samsung
:good:
The purple z2 is the most beautiful thing ever, this phone has it all, I haven't found any flaws yet.
Its just perfection

Yeah, it's a good phone, but a sold it month ago and bought OnePlus One. I don't like lack of development for Z2 And being flas-a-holic, I always need new ROMs to try ) And here nothing new in weeks.... Development for OnePlus One is waaaaay better, just like on Nexus devices.
But camera on Z2 is superb. With this camera I was able to get such a good photos that many people commented like "Wow! It was shot on a professional camera or edited heavily in Photoshop?"

Well... I would say 1,5 days. I wake up at 6 AM, and when I go to sleep (around 11 PM), battery is at 40-50%. That's around 2,5 hours screen on time...
It's surely worse than Xperia Z2 in terms of battery, but for me this is 100% enough. And what's even better - Cyanogen team always developing new ways to improve battery life on OPO by optimizing settings.
i used to switch phones every 2-3 mths .. from iphone to nokia, to android, blah blah blah, you get the idea.
But this android phone is the only phone which i don really have anything to complain about. (other than the magnetic port that came out after 2 weeks of use. but its rock solid now after coming out of sony service centre)
yeah, i flash alot when i was on HTC or samsung. but i just did a root on z2 and i am 100% satisfied! i don't see a need to flash custom when everything is working so fine. love the build, the camera and esp the battery life on this baby!

same here! after rooting the Z2 I don't see the need to flash custom roms when everything's running so smoothly, only mods I've flashed through recovery are the olokos Z2 soundmod and Viper4Android, those two alone made this phone into a musical beast and occasionally I change the system's font using the iFont app

+1 !
I'm thinking exactly the same as you ! I only wish they could do a Xperia Z Ultra 2 with all the specs from the Z2/Z3... That would be so great ! The only one thing i miss is a bigger screen... 5,7" or 6" would be great !

Same here, but qhd is better and a big battery capacity let say 4500 mah and a Wacom stylus if they want to compete note 4 series.
