To root or not to root? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I am in a dilemma.
I really want to root but I'm afraid that I will someday(not due root) will get the RLOD or something else and that I need to RMA it while I'm rooted.
So pretty much, I'm worried about my warranty.
What would you recommend me to do?
And any stories about rooted phones sent to rma?
Thanks in advance!

you can be stuck on one side of a street, and be affraid to cross the street because there is a possibility that a huge semi truck will go speeding out of control without brakes, and could flatten you while you cross that street. or, you can go on living your life and just cross the street.

Warranties end eventually, and if it has ended already, you might as well root it. And I actually think that rooting the Nexus 4 is easier than rooting a lot of other devices.

You should have tried to root a HTC device 3 years ago. It was horrible.

Okay thanks everyone!
But I still have a question:
If I am rooted and my phone gets a problem and it can't turn on anymore or like the RLOD or something similar and I am rooted, how am I suppose to unroot?
That's impossible then since the device can't turn on, so if I sent my device which is rooted to Google or LG for warranty can they know it's rooted and charge me in any possible way? Or is that also impossible for them since the device can't turn on?
Thanks in advance

In many cases, they don't even check if it's rooted or not when they send you a new one.
If the phone doesn't turn on, they can't check if it's rooted or not. To fix it, they usually reset the whole phone, and there's no sign of root.

Unroot Atrix to return it?

Hey guys. New around here. I know you guys are the ones to ask and just want to say thanks to everyone for all the help I've received off this site. Anyways... My Atrix is having that notorious random reboot problem. About 3 times a day and factory reset did nothing to help it. I am going to take it in tomorrow to exchange it for a new one and my question is do I have to unroot it before I take it in? Does it void the warranty? Or will they even know to look for the SuperUser app to see if it is rooted? Help would greatly be appreciated and I'm curious if anyone else has exchanged or got a refund for a rooted phone from ATT.
Thanks guys!
My first reaction would be to say that it will probably void your warranty if they catch it. Then, however, I remember the time when I returned a Captivate to AT&T for a warranty replacement which was completely modded to hell and back. I never heard anything about it.

Just run the aRoot "unroot" script. It should unroot it and remove SU

I did unroot it but wipe the phone in store for an exchange due to the LED flash light flickering problem.
if you're within the return / exchange policy window, i wouldn't bother unrooting.
i'm about 75% sure I'm returning mine for a tbolt back on vzw on thursday. I'm not unrooting / untethering / unmodding mine.. they can reflash it easily enough.
Why don't you just run that nifty program that someone made here to unroot it? I did it before returning mine; it took about 5 minutes.

Well I just returned my phone after unrooting with Super One Click and exchanged it for another one. The guy there didn't ask any questions and didn't even touch my phone except to swap SIM cards. They seemed pretty keen on the reboot problem with the Atrix. But I have my new one and it works flawless. No issues to report as of yet. Thanks for your replies guys.
i exchanged my first atrix a week ago rooted and they didnt care. rooting doesn't void your warranty...unlocking the bootlader does

You are incorrect. You have installed software and modified the OS outside of what is allowed. A factory reset will not restore, so the phone is no longer at a state it was in when delivered to the customer.
Rooting voids the warranty on phones with already unlocked bootloaders - this is no different.
Nevermind...

If the phone must be in the same state it was delivered to the customer in, then technically you couldn't install any updates or software for yourself.

Stop making it more complicated than it really is; you can return the phone after ddoing work to the phone. I have also read of people returning rooted ans jailbroken phones with no problem.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
Returning it will always vary by the person who you are dealing with.
If the Unroot script is there, I'd say use it just to cover all bases.
It takes 10 seconds to use, and gives you one less thing to worry about...

how did you root it? Use superoneclickroot to unroot it..
I havent rooted mine yet, so i may not be 100% sure.
i used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056334, so yes essentially i must just be able to unroot and reflash the secure rom i guess
is there a secure wxdd kernel avaialbe
ive got a link to the xwkdd, but its hotfile and really slow, are there any alternatives?
You will have a counter to say you flashed a non-samsung kernel. Unknown if Samsung check this, but it might be a good idea to get a USB jig and reset it. Guide in the Dev subsection.
im banking they dont. anyhow it will not be with samsung ittl be with mobiles.co.uk or ittl be insurance so im not worried about that. ive gone stock now all data deleted even with the widespread gradual blacking out of the phone screen. thanks for help.
What happened with your phone if you dont mind me asking?
it fell on the kitchen floor... kinda silly realy but it got nocked out of my hand, just one of those things. the screen then had a thin vertical purpleish bar and then it went all blue/black. basically completely unuseable now

[Q] How to unroot without accessing phone

Well, dropped my g2 from like 2 feet hit perfect and shattered and screen doesnt work. Is there anyway I can unroot without actually being able to use my touch screen. Also if anyone knows how/where I can fix this without LG, let me know, im sure they will charge me to hell. Thanks!

You gotta return to stock using a computer. There is no other way to do it other than this method. Hope it works out for you!
Surely you will be paying for the repair anyway?
Could he not just use the LG tool to flash the stock image, or do you have to accept something on the touch screen?

That would be the revert to stock method I was referring to. He could then get an insurance claim on it and pay no more than $100, assuming the OP has insurance.
Far as I know he doesnt have to use the touch screen to revert back, its all done with the tools given in the revert methodology, but correct me if im wrong on this.

If you're using insurance don't waste your time. Neither care about root whether it's warranty or insurance but call and ask if you want. Insurance will straight up tell you they don't care. You're paying anyway.

Need to Send Note 3 In For Warranty; Rooted

I dropped my phone today and now the volume up button is completely busted, it's stuck in the up position. I need to send it in for warranty work from Samsung but I can't even get it into Download Mode to unroot it, and even if I could, I couldn't hit the rocker up key to continue. How can I get it unrooted so I can send it to Samsung? I'm on Verizon.

Just bring it into Verizon (btw wrong forum also ) - Carriers tend to deal with their own repairs/replacements in house, especially US carriers :good:

Do you know what rooted means?
Please read this information here regarding Samsung Mobile Phone warranty,
http://www.samsung.com/in/support/warranty/warrantyInformation.do?page=POLICY.WARRANTY
It clearly says,
THIS WARRANTY IS NOT APPLICABLE IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING CASES:
5.Defects caused by improper use, as determined by the Authorised Service Centre / Company personnel.
Off course you will get your phone repaired but not under warranty,
only after paying for it
What if I took it to Verizon? Either way rooting my phone is technically voiding the warranty, which is why I am freaking out.

Just tried it.
adb reboot-bootloader
indeed puts the device into Download Mode (without needing the Vol-Up button).
So all you need now is to go through Windows driver hell to get adb working. Either that or use a Mac (/Linxux)!
good luck

If they are already sending you a new device, and all you have to do is return the old device in a pre-paid box, then I wouldn't worry about changing the status of the device. I've done this a few times in phone exchanges back when I had tons of trouble with the Galaxy Nexus. Of course, you could for peace of mind, but I've had experience with sending back a rooted device with no problems. I think they refurb it anyway...

OK. That sounds good and would free up some of my time. I'm just curious if anyone else has any experience with it?
But if it doesn't matter then I guess I wouldn't want to spend time on it tonight. I just don't want to get any bills for it or get into a big spat.

I think you really just need to play dumb and say you don't know what happened. One minute you were using it and the next thing you know it's bricked. Try not to raise too many questions and they'll give you the benefit of the doubt, unless they find that it's rooted.

hm yeah, I cant send it back to LG due to not having original receipt im going to have to take it back to where i got it from it says it doesn't cover "firmware changes such as rooting or 3rd party unlocking" thats why i was thinking if i said the phone shut off during the update progress it might seem the battery was faulty or somesort as it was updating and it corrupted everything or something? I know what you mean about acting dumb, hmm
