Nexus 7 bootloader - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In trying to root my Nexus 7 (the new model second generation) I got the bootloader unlocked but when putting in fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-flo.ing I'm getting this message fastboot is not a recognized as internal or external command. I had all files download I spent hours trying to do it and keep getting that same message I tried on 2 different computers so I'm just going to give up. With the bootloader unlocked will I still get and be able to install updates? Is there any downside to leaving it unlocked?

Check out this post. Should get you going in the right direction. Just remember you have to have the tablet in fastboot for those commands to work. This post gives you a zip that has all the files you need. You can just work from that folder with fastboot. That is basically how I do it...hope it helps. :good:

There's no one click method I know of for the Nexus S.
What do you mean you can't root & it won't budge? This phone is about as easy they come (without some one click app): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931865
Install the android sdk on your computer.
Put the su.zip file on your sdcard partition of the phone.
Put the phone in fastboot mode.
Fastboot flash the recovery.
Select recovery.
Select install zip from sdcard.
Flash it.
Reboot.
You're done.
If your computer doesn't recognize the phone while it's in the bootloader, you gotta install the google Nexus S drivers or the one from PDAnet. That was where I got stuck at 1st when I tried rooting. Fastboot couldn't find my phone because I had the generic windows drivers.
Also if you have PDANet on, turn it off before putting your phone in fastboot mode.
Actually there is a one click method...brb with it
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/easy-one-click-root-for-nexus-s-full-guide/
Or search superboot nexus s
Here on xda
Either will work PC or mac.

Interesting. So the steps on the referenced one-click method you posted are:
1) put your phone in fastboot
2) do the fastboot oem unlock command manually.
3) run a batch file that contains two lines (fastboot-windows.exe flash boot boot.superboot.img & fastboot-windows.exe reboot).
I guess that's easier than putting your phone in fastboot directly and typing in a command to flash clockwork, then selecting a zip file to install from clockwork, but not much.
The drawbacks here are of course that it's superboot, and that it requires you to unlock the bootloader. I guess it's useful if you're really noob, but it only saves you typing one command.
The noob part is very true. However I prefer my bootloader unlocked anyhow.

Why do you prefer it unlocked?
I like the unlocked lock! No seriously custom roms etc.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
main reason i think there is no one click root is because its so simple to do on this phone

You do not need an unlocked bootloader (currently) to use custom roms, or to root, or to flash clockwork recovery, etc...
On day one that wasn't a known entity.

Of course, but since you contradicted my statement earlier that one disadvantage to the posted method here was that it had you unlock the bootloader by replying that you like having yours unlocked, I was trying to pin down if there was an advantage to unlocking the bootloader that had been discovered that I hadn't heard yet.
There's indication on git for our phone that the next update includes a change to the bootloader being able to use the fastboot boot command while locked. Unknown what that will actually do in terms of just fastboot flashing clockwork to apply root and custom roms.
I c wut u did there. I'm not sure how the update is going to affect things ATM. I keep it unlocked for "in case sh*t" happens. Never know what an update will bring in changes to rom management.

Strange Root Issue

When I saw the port for ICS come out I got really excited and flashed it right away. Then I realized for whatever reason I didnt have SU permissions so I couldn't tether to my computer. I was disappointed but I thought, "no biggie, I'll just restore from my back up." When I flashed my back up the SU app was in my app drawer but I still couldn't tether. As a matter of fact I can't do anything that requires SU but the bootloader still reads unlocked. WTF?
I can't flash a new recovery either. I tried installing from ROM manager, I tried pushing it from my computer but I can't get to the recovery any more. ROM manager says that I have CWM 5.0.2.0 currently installed but I can't get to it at all. Again, WTF?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
^clearly the phone is working perfectly fine with the stock ROM from the back up but obviously I want my SU back.
Root your phone and read the development thread versus making blog posts.

Thanks for not answering my questions. The bootloader is unlocked but I don't have root and I don't have access to recovery mode even tho ROM Manager says I have Clockwork Mod 5.0.2.0 currently installed. I cannot access the recovery mode AT ALL. I cannot flash or push a new recovery but it fully boots into Gingerbread w/o any issues. What is wrong with my phone and how do I fix it.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Try from rom manager to reinstall a previous recovery version.
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA App
That doesn't work either. It goes through the prompts but it doesn't actually reboot do the installation.
I just tried unrooting and then re - rooting but that didn't work and I think that actually wiped my phone completely. I don't even know where an SD card would get into this thing.

Is that the right name of the recovery img? Try renaming it to just recovery and see if that works.
Edit: make sure your phone is in debugging mode. And uninstall then reinstall the drivers on your computer

manually go into recovery with volume down and power flash the su.zip and u should be good to go that wat I did

No suggestions have worked so far. It does not matter what the recovery image name is, whenever I try the flash it Terminal says that it cannot load "***.img" or if I try an install command it says that it cannot find "***.zip" I'm on a snow leopard iMac so I don't need drivers n such.
Let me pose the question like this, what would I do to completely restore the phone to factory condition and try to root it again? Like I said before, the bootloader says that it is unlocked but I do not have any root privileges, could not access the recovery I had before nor install a new recovery after having locked the unlocked the phone's bootloader again.

go to the link above and follow the directions for returning to stock.
find yourself a one-click root method on XDA that includes superuser, busybox, and CWM.
EDIT: Also, double check the md5 sum for the CWM .zip. use
Code:
md5 recovery-aaaaaa.img
in the terminal and make sure the output matches whatever is given on the CWM site. if they dont have one up, ask for it
NS4g one-click root app:
http://www.mediafire.com/?2jx8xtx2602hi23
this will:
unlock the bootloader
install cwm 5.0.2.0
root
No commands, no messing with pushing files manually, etc. This thing has already saved me from major headaches while restoring my phone once and I've only had it for 3 weeks lol

[Q] Restoring Stock Android on Nexus 7

Hi I have a problem with my Nexus 7 (32 gb wifi only version).
My son in his infinite wisdom decided to install ubuntu on the tablet.
I went to try and restore this back to the android version but all it did was to wipe off ubuntu itself
I then went on jayceooi.com and used the nexus toolbox to see if I could reflash the images etc.Howveer although all the files were downloaded I canot get the laptop to recognise the nexus itself (even though it sems to charge the tablet). There is no menu at all to check whether or not usb debugging is ticked or not..
Im now left with the tablet without no apparent operating system. At the moment all it shows is the green android with fastboot mode but when I hit start it says booting failed.
Could someone help please before I do any more damage and I brick it completly (although I may have already done so)
thankyou for any help

Yes it can do restore back to stock. Just follow the guide to unlock bootloader so it can flash stock image then just re lock bootloader. It covers the process in op.

Ok thanks all. Seemed to be doing everything ok but its been stuck on"waiting for your device to finish booting back up" for about 30 minutes now. It did say it would take 5 to 10 mins but should i carry on waiting or abort and start again do you think?
thanks
I would reset it see if that helped

If your son re did the partitions for Ubuntu that could have messed things up pretty good. I have only had my nexus for a few days so I couldn't tell you how to fix the formatting quite yet. I would search around on how to verify and correct the partitions if needed.

Problem flashing custom recovery

Just get my nexus, i unlock it root it and try to install twrp through nexus 4 toolkit...when im on flashboot i choose reboot recovery but nothing happens...also i notice that i have a bootloader* version mako10o ( i see only 10i and 10I exists correct me if im wrong)
Edit: somehow with nexus root toolkit i manage to flash it..even with some difficulties....
so anyone else has this bootloader?i have the nipples and the smaller "hole" in the back camera too!!
Don't use a toolkit and learn to do it all manually
I know who to make it manually even than from my old phone its a bit different..but i unlock, root, change recovery in 1st hour the phone came...
You probably types the wrong command or didn't place the file in the right place.
Anyways, you can just flash twrp using the too manager app from the play store.

Help with Fastboot, Nex4 wont boot any further

I've aquired this Nexus 4 from a friend who has somehow wiped the recovery and rom, I can boot into fastboot, but that's it, if I go to the recovery option through fast boot it gives me the android with the exclamation point, implying there is no functional recovery.
So! I've finally borrowed a friends laptop and am having trouble getting fastboot setup, Drivers/Fastboot has always been my downfall.
I recently used this same computer to root a nexus 5 so I should have proper **** for that, would that work? can anyone maybe help me out a little.
I check device manager (Windows 7) and there's no category that has anything to do with the nexus 4 or removable devices. I've tried installing drivers a couple different ways, but am having no luck of course. I would try to delete the previously installed drivers but I have no entry to device manager to click, The only will only boot as far as fastboot so I'm just kinda stuck as fastboot hasn't really been my thing, I have fastboot.exe on this pc from previous use, I tried to go to the folder and "open command prompt here" and type adb devices to see if it would show the device and got nothing so I'm kinda lost, someone please help me out as I only have this laptop for as long as my friend is here and theres no others near to me use. Please and thank you

You'll probably need to flash the factory image, get it from here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Un- zip it and inside you'll see a flash-all.bat. while you're booted into the bootloader double click on the bat.

My thoughts are since the recovery is screwed I just need get fastboot functional and flash a recovery, I'm a custom ROM kinda guy. So if that's all I need than cool, (I currently have a nexus 5) I know mako has other bootloaders and radios and **** and I'm not sure exactly what version of android this is on or anything. Bit my situation is definitely having a phone that'll only go to fastboot, when I try to boot regularly it just sits at the Google logo.

Not sure if just flashing the recovery will work, but download the factory image and unzip it. Inside is another zip, unzip that too. There you'll find the recovery.img
