Can't open settings. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Something strange is going on with my N4, every time I try to open my settings it just closes it again almost instantly. Also I've noticed that if I turn off wifi it turns itself back on straight away and then it goes into silent mode for a second (speaker symbol with dash through it) then back to full volume. I've tried restarting it and uninstalling recent apps. I am thinking about doing a factory reset but don't want to if I can help it... But I can't anyway because I can't get into settings! Nothing shows up in virus scans. Screen briefly flashes black regularly too. Any suggestions please? Thanks.

Unfortunately you will have to wipe EVERYTHING on your device to fix this issue.
For now press and hold the power button, press and hold the power off option.
You should see a safe mode option, press OK and the device will boot to safe mode.
In that stage check the settings if it still works.

Thanks, do you know what has caused this problem?

No idea, probably some settings or kernel bug.
Did it work?, if so then reboot to get off safe mode and see if it works.

I can get the settings to stay open in safe mode but still same problem when I restart it again. Should I do a factory reset?

Most likely an app is doing this, yes try factory resetting.

Factory reset it and all good now! Thanks.

Did you installed an antitheft app?? Usually they try to make the settings persistent when in locked to Help phone recovery mode which usually gets activated by changing the SIM card
A factory reset should fix that in most cases

What you said makes sense. So, just for the future reference. Should I uninstall my anti-theft app before changing sim card? Will this prevent if from happening? Thanks!

Only have access to 50% of my battery.

For the last week my nexus 7 has been completely dying around 50% battery. If its in sleep mode when it hits that % then it won't turn on, if I'm using it when I hit that % I get a weird flicker then it shuts off. This just seems extremely strange that all of a sudden only half my battery works. A long with only having half my battery to work with, it seems like the tablet has been charging a lot slower then normal. I use to be able to work it down all the time and usually didn't charge it until 5%-10%
Anyone else ever have this issue? I contacted Asus and there only solution right now was a factory reset. I cant see how that could fix the issue at all.

are you rooted? what type of kernel are you using?
I have read that sometimes a factory reset refreshes the battery settings. Is your device rooted or rommed out?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
That happened to one of my friends S2's. Factory reset it. It worked for my friend. My N7 also charged really slow. I just changed the ROM. It is the same thing as a factory reset because you do one when you change your ROM.

You mean it's turning itself on or it's rebooting on its own?

You said your phone shuts off after hard use, and you said it is really hot when it shuts down. This sounds like a hardware problem. When the processor gets too hot, the device kills power to protect it from frying. Almost every computer has a similar last-resort power-off feature to protect its hardware.
Now the real question: What is making the device overheat? Most likely this is a hardware problem, but there is a remote possibility that the problem could be a rouge app.
A factory reset will remove the apps you installed. If there is an app running an infinite loop in the background, a factory reset might fix the problem. (I remember you said you are running stock without root, so there are no firmware issues. The only possible software issues are with your apps.)
I am sorry to say that you might have a defective board.

But why start doing that after a month of using it? The only new I did was using the maps app for more than 4hours... A friend toll me to clear cache on map apps...

If the problem really is hardware, it was a defect that made it past quality control. It's the same reason why a new hard drive might fail after a week of usage--infant mortality. Infant mortality is quite rare, but it does happen nevertheless.
Fortunately, Google's replacement procedure is quite nice compared to most other companies. If Google sends you a replacement, you can keep your existing phone until the replacement arrives. This way, you are not left without a phone temporarily.
Update! Did a factory reset and root it and it's good now! Looks like an app was causing the rebooting... Thanks for the help!

Without it you won't be able to access the play store, sync gmail or your contacts.
Tune off auto-sync if it's on. Go to backup & reset in settings and uncheck "backup my data". Make sure location services is off as well.

I wasn't asking for a literal explanation XD

Are you just trying at home? If you haven't already, try resetting your router/modem. The ole unplug for 10 seconds should do the trick.

Nexus 4 shutdown everytime

Hi guys, there's a nexus 4 of my friend that shutdowns every time I try to turn it on. It's all stock, not rooted and bootloader locked.
I tried a factory reset and it worked for some days but it started again this noisy shutdown.
How can I try to restore it?

How old is the battery, do you know how many charging cycles did it have?
What apps do you use? Do you feel the phone heating up before shutting down?
