Battery drains fast and problems with charger - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
after I overclocked my device and used custom ROM to reduce lag the battery was drains fast and overheat and I used the factory image(in android 4.3) to get the stock kernel and stock ROM my device not overheat anymore but still drains fast and the charger sometimes when my device is on charges slooowly and sometimes while it plugged in it don't charge it decrease 1 percent and stop charging while playing any game and the charger smell like burnt and it charge first while my device is off but that didn't happen to me before the overclock,
I want to know I there are way to increase battery life and fix the charger problem,

A Few Apps For Battery Life
There are a couple things I would do, first is you need to monitor what is draining the battery. One thing to note though is your OC is obviously going to drain the battery quicker than stock and your governor setting could also affect this a lot. I am guessing your custom ROM has a non-stock kernel with it, if not I would recommend Franco's Kernel (r75 is the latest) and he even has an app that will keep you updated and flash for you (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.franco.kernel&hl=en) there is also a free version of that. Franco's paid app has a built in power settings option that lets you adjust power usage per app that could be extremely useful in your case. However I would do some monitoring first and make sure a live wallpaper or a hardware monitor is not draining more battery than you think it is.
I've used these two apps and both do a great job of letting you know what is using the battery most during load/idle/sleep:

Also in Android Tuner and I think Better Battery Stats (I've uninstalled it since I got Android Tuner) there is an option to turn on a fast charge option. Fast Charge will decrease the time to charge the battery, however I haven't used this feature because it sounds like there must be a catch (more power to the battery quicker isn't going to be at stock spec power delivery from charger to battery). If my N7 was having trouble charging, I might consider it.
Really the first thing you need to do is install one of the monitoring apps and watch what is using your battery the most and if something is using it a lot that you didn't even realize. I was using UseMon to monitor and it was using 36% of my total battery usage, so I ditched it.

Just restart your N7. The battery draining issue would go away for about 5 days. This trick works for me

consistently mediocre battery life even after calibration and undervolt

I just can't seem to crack the battery life conondrum. I've calibrated (charge to 100%, wipe stats, then full cycle).
If I'm listening to music its consistently I'm sucking ~10% an hour, if idling ~4-5%. Which means I'm getting around same battery life as my old nexus one – mediocre, I end a working day with around 30-40%. If I want to go out after work i have to remind myself to charge during the day...
Right now I'm even running a mild setcpu undervolt (with faux123 kernel) and profile (screenoff max cpu 600mhz) but seeing not much improvement if any.
I am on gingerbread AT&T radio so thats not it either... any tips aside from 'use juice defender' (which I don't want to do as I want always on data instant push etc., I know juice defender basically shuts your data radio off)?
Note this is the same with stock gingerbread as well as the ROM and kernel I'm currently on (redpill, faux123 kernel)
I've done everything you have and i'm on a Bell Atrix....i have been looking into this for about a week or more and i just can't crack it either!!! it's driving me nuts and i have spent sooo many hours googling, searching xda and other sites and have tested MANY different methods and still can't seem to figure it out. For me i know its the phone idle...but what it is i can't tell, i have SystemPanel monitoring as as well as watchdog which i alternate with. Flashed the battery calibration fix and calibrated the meter blah blah blah....driving me nuts and i know its not a faulty battery because before i unlocked and flashed 2.3.4 i could get about 30 hours with heavy to moderate use!!!
For the love of god i wish a team of dev's would look into this!!!!!!!!
Honestly none of the faux kernels worked for me... Try gobstopper, stock kernel with watchdog was the only combo to give me good battery life. Not to mention lock sounds works properly, and its fast. All bell users should use it. Seriously... 19+ hours worth moderate usage.

2. Flash a kernel which allows overclocking, install SetCpu, add battery saving profiles (downclock to 500mhz on screen off, downclock to 800 mhz when battery less than 30%, downclock to 800mhz if temperature higher than 50C)
3. Freeze all MotoBlur bloatware (there's a guide in the general section)
4. Disable data and wifi unless you need it
5. Install Watchdog and set it up according to instructions I provided in my calibration thread.

Well, if you keep data or wifi turned on at all times, then there's no way you can have something more than mediocre battery life, sorry.
It's not the Atrix'es fault, its the brutal truth with all modern smartphones.
1 personally run ninja speed freak, i get amazing battery life. simply amazing, days on worth of battery!
it is not a kernel issue, i simply dont know exactcly what hack in particular gives ninja the amazing battery life. but im working hard to determing this so i can share it.

I'm not signed into motorblur either.
I do turn off wifi when out, but bluetooth is normally on.

The people in this thread have listed all known steps to improving battery life.
If you really follow all of these guidelines and have bad battery life, you might want to try a battery replacement.
If you are sure your battery is not the problem, you might also want to try a couple of custom roms. Who knows maybe you will get lucky with one of them.

Is there any way to log off from motoblur once you are in so you can stay offline? Of course any connection that gets cut will increase battery life.
I don't understand all these battery life problems. Its got to be an app you are installing or your battery is buggered!
Admittedly when I first installed 2.3.4 OTA, battery life dropped like a stone, but I drained it flat, and then charged it up again and its been fine ever since.
I'm running on stock 2.3.4 without root, and I have quite a lot going on (IM's/Facebook/Twitter) and I can last well over a day and a half with moderate use, this includes sms and calls.

Battery life is a very subjective issue. One person might be fine with the phone, while the other person will say battery life is terrible with the very same phone.
Besides the obvious drainage problems, it all depends on how you use the phone.
Honestly the best thing that worked for me was turning off "Syncing".
I currently have 3G on, BT on, ETC...
Syncing in the background killed my battery life. Now I usually make it through the day without the need for a top-off...

Im in stock gingerbread and battery life is definitely worse than on stock 2.2.2 and and im basically running the same Apps. I am a heavy user and I used to drop 10% per hour. Switch on at 7am and by 5pm I was changing battery. Now I am switching around 3pm.
That's why I have 3 batteries!
I still think its better than nearly every other device I have owned but that nay be because battery is larger. I dont know why they don't design to put in 2400 mah batteries (my treo 650 had one!).

The treo 650 also had a thickness double that of the Atrix .
The batteries in your phone are high-capacity lithium-ion batteries. This kind of battery technology cannot be simply reset and “re-calibrated.” When you follow the steps to recalibrate your battery and delete the batterystats.bin file from your phone, you are getting rid of more than what you think… Stored inside that batterystats.bin file, your phone keeps detailed logs of the capacity of your battery and uses it on how it can be utilized more efficiently. By deleting this file, it basically wipes the phone’s memory on what the battery can really do. This actually does damage to your battery by using up valuable charging cycles, all while giving a fraction of battery life and performance.
Now, you might be saying uh-oh, I’ve already re-calibrated my battery! What do I do?!
Well here’s your answer. Use your phone like normal. Yes, your battery and phone wont perform as good as it can for a while, but after a few days, you will notice that it starts doing better and better. Give it time, its trying to rebuild all those logs that you just deleted.

This is the first time I am reading this sort of opinion, though I have read countless info on the subject.
If you want to make such a strong point, you better have source to back up your opinion (article, studies, other source of proof, etc).
These threads are all USELESS without NUMBERS.
Like another person with common sense already stated in this thread, you need to provide numbers.
GB has this improved tool (over 2.2) where you can see how your battery is wasting its juice. Watch those numbers for a few charges and then POST THEM TO COMPARE.
Saying your battery sucks without giving any numbers is like calling a color ugly.
(just in case someone misses the points, without numbers it's hard to compare, since it mainly becomes an opinion at that point)
P.S.- Please don't post "My battery lasts for over 9000 hours." and think that's enough info. Use your head.

And can anybody compare it to the Galaxy Nexus, or an iPhone 4/4S (a 4S WITHOUT the battery issue that was going around)?
I'm really interested in switching from 4 to either a 4S or the a Note or Nexus... Battery life is an important thing to me though.
Also, just how much does having blacks on the screen help? How much does that help? If you just wanna answer my first question "How's your battery?" then that's fine. That's what's more important here.
Compared to the iPhone 4, I am getting almost twice the battery run time. I have not changed my habits during my normal day, and use the same apps that are available for both platforms by the same authors. The black home screen does help if you are starring at it all the time, but how often are we doing that?
I am also rooted and using FM kernel. Love the Open Source community.

Some site did a comparison of 3g talk time with a Note and an I****.
The Note got a whopping 14 HOURS of 3g talktime.
The i**** 4s got 8 hours.
So phone vs phone, thr Note wins.

Holy cow! What's your screen-on time? Are you underclocking or anything? I'm guessing your good battery life was because of the kernel?
even @ stock ROM and Kernel, the NOTE is impressive in terms of batt life except if you're browsing a lot (since we all know that AMOLED consumes more juice in showing white shades compared to other display technology) ... Some ROMs and Kernels have battery saving scripts embedded and you can also find a lot of tips on how to improve batt life on our Note...
In my case, my Note can last 22hours+ of moderate to heavy usage; im using Rocket v6 ROM and FM Kernel (undervolted and underclock to 1200mhz)... I set my Wallpapers to the darker ones, customize goSMS with pure black background and themes, disable fast dormancy, turn off GPS and wifi when not in use, use minimal widget as possible, set the brightness to lower level that suit you, set to GSM mode mostly, disable background data when not needed, delete some unimportant processes in the system, manage startup application, disable task manager, and etc...

Yes, the FM kernel did help significantly. The reasoning being that the author disabled the heavy logging Android does for debugging purposes. Other than that, everything in the kernel is stock. No undervolting or underclocking. I also keep away from any app that overclocks the CPU, they usually mess with the phones ability to go into deep sleep.

regarding deepsleep and unwanted processes in background; you can install CpuSpy, Watchdog or Wakeclock monitor app if you're having an abnormal battery drain...

CPUSpy is a wonderful lil app. That is how I determined that SetCPU broke the phones ability to go into deep sleep, even after uninstalling it. I had to flash the ROM all over again.
Compared to iphone 4 gnote battery is less... the reason is bigger battery.
However even with heavy usage my battery last till night every day.
battery life has got better with time.

true... the apps i posted are all essential IMO... wakeclock monitoring is also very helpful in finding faulty apps running...
I'm getting glorious battery compared to my GSII.
Granted it's relatively light usage for now because of work and such, but I'm impressed. Almost always have the brightness at 25%, never need any more.
The sudden drop was from a restart.

Its only used to record things like this app held a wake time of ? Or your screen was using 40% recources for x amount of time. The stats bin actually has nothing at all to do with current or maximum level of charge allowable. So if you do wipe the battery stats bin what happens? The reporting that occurs in the stats bin might be allowed to report faster due to being cleaned. So then how do I get a full charge. Well sorry to say the's no real good way short of constant monitoring of your charge. lets look at what a L'ion battery really does. A lion battery is basically the same as nicad or lead acid.the difference is the amount of charge per cell. Most L'ion battery hold a Max charge of 4.2v +/- 50mV a cell. That being said leaving your battery charging over night not only wastes power but actually oxidizes the cells causing the battery to not fully charge. Our batteries will charge more effectively by not full charging to 100% every time. Getting a good battery monitor widget like the one by 3c is your best friend, when your at 0ma your pretty much done.. So to wrap this up and still give you proper info here we go!!! Screen time out and LCD density drain most of your battery. Using task managers to kill apps actually uses more battery because Android will re open apps as it chooses, there's no need to kill an app unless you know why your doing it android does a great job of resource management. Also remember any mods or tweaks you use might add extra strain on your battery. Multiple launchers,live wallpapers,not backing out of apps properly especially games. The main things to consider when your battery loses charge fast is, does my rom use more resources than stock, do I have to many active apps, do I not know how to properly exit applications. ALL THIS INFO IS FACT AND CAN BE VERIFIED BY A LITTLE RESEARCH ON YOUR PART!

Yes, the wiping battery stats in recovery does NOTHING. Glad to see this reported. I've read much about this on Google+, with actual Google engineers and employees and developers debunking this. It only deletes your phones record of battery use (essentially), i.e. has absolutely zero effect on battery use, only record/reporting.

While this is correct an SBC kernel will allow your phone to get a higher charge and hold it there while undervolting will lessen the amount of power used therefore giving u better battery life.
While fully charging a battery will potentially lessen the life of a battery, it could take years for a noticeable effect... And in reality, how many people will continue having the evo once their contract is up, and the recent/upcoming lte releases become free with upgrade down the road...
Not to mention letting the phone discharge too low is not great for a battery either...
I concur on battery stats not needing to be wiped...

Using task managers to kill apps actually uses more battery because Android will re open apps as it chooses, there's no need to kill an app unless you know why your doing it android does a great job of resource management. Also remember any mods or tweaks you use might add extra strain on your battery. Multiple launchers,live wallpapers,not backing out of apps properly especially games. The main things to consider when your battery loses charge fast is, does my rom use more resources than stock, do I have to many active apps, do I not know how to properly exit applications. Thanks for the information! I wonder how this will be received by those who've been doing this battery stats wiping religiously when flashing ROMs. Interesting to get some information from the SOURCE!
Also, I've always used the sbc kernels, and have had no battery issues (and I let the phone charge all night, every night). I'm sure it'll mess up my battery eventually, but I got my current one free anyway from Sprint (extended one), so oh well. No loss!

This is good info - I can confirm that. Sometimes we advise our customers to wipe out the stats, because this differs from phone to phone. Dell Streak 5 for example, has the .bin file hardcoded somehow to the OEM battery capacity, so the charge indication is not shown properly if the battery is bigger than the OEM (if I'm not mistake). But in general, yes, wiping the .bin file won't increase battery life.

Increasing battery Life - Samsung GT N 7000 - finally !!!!

Dear All,
Its been quiet some time trying to do enough experiments with custom ROM, battery life apk and all that can tweak CPU....seems a solution is getting into place. My device started giving a decent battery life, of 3% drop for an idle usage time of 8 hrs. Things done as below:
1. Root - Yes required
2. Good Custom ROM - using currently Ultimate ROM - thanks to the developer, its a great ROM
3. Install Greenify - this is one apk you will love unlike other task killing apk, hibernation is better
4. Install CPU Spy - Come with default with this ROM
5. Juice defender - just to ensure be sure all things are controlled.
Thats it, your device is ready to rock. I charged to 75% battery before sleeping, disabled of course Wifi and other data and removed all unnecessary task killers, battery managers etc. Gave a 3% dip in battery after 8 hrs. Post that a charge of again to 75% with a normal usage of calls( around 10 calls average talk time of 2 minutes), Wifi for reading mails and still the battery 15% after using for 5 hrs !!!. Earlier this used to tank in 3 hrs, so i believe a decent battery time.
Hope it helps readers to address battery issue.
Mine gives 1 percent drop full night maybe 8 hrs without any mods.

What's a difference if I will use 1% or 3% over night if in 1h of web browsing or gaming will loose 30%?
For heavy users benefits are negligible. Few mA on undervolting few on lowering brightness and black theme but still the screen is the hugest drain and rest is nothing if you do not have wake-locks. Most of the time my screen uses 60-70% with all connectivity enabled and no juice saving apps and no matter how many tweaks applied, we have to live with screen consuming a lot of juice even on minimum brightness. Liked a lot juice defender on hd2, now on note not much difference.

Yes its true in any case we will have less than 3% drop if left idle, but i tried to check battery usage, "Screen usage" is high if used for a full time, earlier it was "Android" using more. Anyways thanks all for you information. AS Nigi mentioned we just have to live with it - No matter what we do, if for a day it works with 15% battery remaining it would be just sufficient.

Galaxy Note has a large enough battery to standby for days (Official: 32 days on 3G, 40 days on 2G) without tweakings or modings. On ICS Stock ROM on airplane mode, during the night, a 100% battery remains 100% the morning after. I don't know what else I could have asked for a better battery performance out of my phone.
To get the best performance out of any smartphone one has to layout the expectations first and then become technically educated with the basics "properly" before changing usage habbits.
Laying out the expectations
Choosing a 5.3" device when smaller screen sizes were already available dictates the specific requirements one had. These could be physical (i.e., big hands, bad eyes), usage (i.e., reading and writing for long period of times, playing games, watching videos), or seeking differentiation (i.e., showing off, standing out).
When you know why you purchased Galaxy Note then we can move on to the technical stuff.
Technical - Basics
Bigger screens draw more power, the brighter the screen is the more power it needs. These are scientific facts and Galaxy Note's screen by no means is power efficient.
Web Browsing is the most, if not one of, task intensive job one can execute with his or hers Galaxy Note. Often Original Note scores poorly in web browsing benchmarks and this is not down to the screen size alone. When the CPU has the right sets of instructions corresponding tasks are performed much faster and with more power effiency. In my opinion the Exynos CPU used in Original Note does not support the crucial instructions in regards to the Web Browsing related processes and something is wrong with the internal flash disk components, be it software, hardware or both. Samsung has so far resisted in releasing its Exynos's source codes and I'm suspicious they have something to hide.
On the other hand, Note II offers excellent Web Browsing benchmark results, even better than the newly released Qualcomm 600 CPU. The battery capacity in Note II is not twice as Original Note but battery performance is almost twice as much in many respects. The overclocked Mali-400, 440MHz from 266MHz, in Note II should drain battery more but the CPU which is based on the same ARM architecture (ARMv7, ARM Coretex-A9) provides far better power efficiency. Thanks to the smaller semiconductor in Exynos 4412 (SGIII and Note II) which is 32nm versus SGII and Note's Exynos 4210 which is 45nm. The smaller nm number is the lower power consumption is.
There is no magic wand that can make Original Note more power efficient as it is. So no matter one does there is no way web browsing can be streched by more than 10 to 15 minutes in low screen brightness, period. Four hours is what we all get.
Change of habbits
Now that we understand there is a power capacity that cannot be stretched we however, can change habbits to get the maximum performance out of Note.
I adamantly opposed any software utility as a solution to extend the battery performance. They come at a cost which is not justified. I don't wish to go through the details but a simple daily reboot which is also recommended by the manufacturers will do the job these software claim to do. These apps mainly free memory while consuming battery.
Be sensible in choosing apps, be responsible in managing them. Once you realise the real reason you own a smartphone your choice for apps will be narrowed down anyway. Monitor the impacts of the newly apps on RAM and overall performance of your phone and then decide whether the app stays or goes.
Google Play app is a culprit to many issues. Literally Google Play is connected to various services for different reasons. One of GP's job is to check for app updates. The more apps installed the more battery is consumed to run the checks, download the updates, and finally installing them.
Be smarter than your smartphones.

If you are rooted, uninstall gmaps updates first then remove GMS_Maps.apk from /system/app folder. Reboot and reinstall it from Google Play as downloaded app. Good Luck!
Why are people so excited by a little battery drain during the night while wi-fi and data are shut down?
My matter is not having a long life battery on a phone I don't use and I find the night is the best moment to have my phone plugged and to let all applications updates and massive data exchanges be done.
My matter is to have the best battery life during the day when I'm on the my way and use the phone, browse, take pictures and films, send and read sms and mails, use GPS, read books and magazines, watch movies or listen to music.

wakelocks = most common issue in standby battery life. Almost everyone encounters them and once they know how to analyze that (ahalfords sticky q&a section) that can be minimized
When awake, tons of other stuff n tweaks.
Both should not enhibit daily functioning. The moment I dont have the feeling, oh I need to not use the phone because I will have no juice is or I need to charge it/swap batteries is the moment I dream for. Such pda's dont exist yet. Not without changing ridiculously behaviour/usage and/or charging. Devices arent there yet. Soon they will.
However, its pretty good now with new battery and changing. I have had far worse lol.

Best way to increase your battery life is just to buy a new battery, get stock JB and decrease screen brightness.

Are you using the ultimate jellybean rom? Just for clarification.
But do you find that the ram is getting used up quickly leaving only ~100MB free? If yes, may i ask if you solved it with greenify? I'll be trying it too now but i'll like to see whether u have this prob and how you solved it. Thanks.

No, and it's not recommended for this kernel. You probably have some application using the CPU. And keep in mind, that's over 3.5 days, so it's not too be worried about.

Not really sure what you are looking for.
Your tablet is configured differently (read: installed apps & their settings, never mind ROM & kernel differences) than the next person's, and those configuration changes alter the activity on the device and therefore the amount of power it consumes vs time. If what you observe is unacceptable to you, you need to drill down into the details to try and optimize things. But it really is impossible for anybody to guess (from a completely blind position on the other side of the internet) what might be the cause; if that is indeed anomalous consumption compared to some benchmark (pure stock, no market apps installed & a dormant gmail account?), the cause could be due to an unlimited number of different causes.
Perhaps you want to use that app BetterBatteryStats ($2.89) to find out about wake lock usage.
FWIW, my rooted stock 4.2.2 N7 grouper tab seems to discharge about 4% "overnight". Call that 10 hrs or so, so maybe I should expect 10% discharge per day while idle and unplugged. Your result seems to suggest 16%/day; but I've made no effort to dig in to things on my end of things - and besides: my results are irrelevant to yours as I no doubt use a different collection of apps than you and possibly different settings for the stock apps, too.
In my case the idle drain rate isn't a very compelling use case - I use the tablet every day, and when it is idle it is plugged into its' charger. If it should happen that it sat idle for a couple days, it's gonna be at 100% when I decide to use it.

And the problem is?
Around 6 days of standby, and you want to improve that?
If you want to improve that, turn off your tablet. I'm sure u can spare those 60 sec two times a day you turn on your tablet to check mail.
Keep WiFi off when not in use and you should see a great improvement. I use stock kernel and over that same time period my battery is about the same with about 3 hours screen on time. I only turn WiFi on when I'm actually using it as anything I need synced goes to my phone.

Try better battery stats and see what keeps your cpu from going to sleep state..With this way you can examine what drains your battery my friend.,.
Try turning off auto-sync. (Data usage settings)
Never keep wifi on when sleep (you will lose notification to chat programs, social network app notifications when sleeping)
Use wifi powersafe mode.(Wifi advance settings)
Turn off/disable unneeded background update/apps/extensions/services and flash a rom with minimal google stock apps)
Of course, check for apps that are currently consuming power if any. (App settings, internal application setting)
M kernel also defaults cpu max to 1500Mhz ; stock is 1200. M kernel also sets gpu to 446Mhz ; stock 416Mhz. Altho this numbers might seem minimal, it can affect your battery life considerably shall there be background processing or even right after you start using your device again despite minimally in your case. (Use n download trickstermod)
These might or might not help you in getting more standby time, try and experiment =>
If you are also looking for more screen on time and if you know and accept the risks, you can try undervolting the cpu, gpu and ram in trickstermod, you can also use rootdim to go lower the screen backlight further, but do not go lower than value 4/255 as that is 'off'. thankfully you can set it to not go below 4 in the in app settings before you play with it. My configuration pushed to 8hrs+ screen time without any gaming =>
Do note that li-ion/poly batteries need to drain over time for batt health reasons. They generally last longer if kept in the 20-80% range. Room temp can also affevt battery drain significantly, cold < 26C room drains the batt real fast; and so does hot rooms >34c due to temp & conductivity relationships (batt needs to suply more due to less conductivity in the circuits when hot)
