WiFi Access point idea!!! - Shield General

I was at my local computer store yesterday when i saw a pcie x1 Wireless N adapter. I started thinking could I stream to my shield better using a WiFi adapter for my desktop, that supports access point mode.
IF someone has one it might be worth a try.

I have a very strange setup... I have 702 comm. And they gave me a wireless DSL modem. My speeds are supposed to be around 30 megs but I ever got near that until I hooked up my own router to the modem's lan port. Now I get 29mb down and 23mb up! Don't know why upload is so high. But I run a net gear a6200 wireless adapter from my PC to the router, the router gives me 5ghz band and the modem doesn't. I haven't had any problems with this setup really, my streaming games look pretty good, but being further away it disconnects a lot, like 60 feet away in the other room. Tried hooking my router up through as an access point but it took away my 5ghz band, and my connect was about 10mb slower. I don't think my wireless adapter has the access point function.

The main reason I started thinking this is it would remove Wireless/Wired connections to the Wireless router/access point from the picture.

I see, so your talking about making the PC itself be the access point right? I've found a bunch of software that does this, I'll try it out

Yeah just tried it, but I couldn't get it working because my WiFi adapter doesn't have that access point mode, even after setting up my ssid and such through cmd prompt. Connectify let me do it, but it really didn't work all that great. I'd say it was just a bit worse than my original settings, someone else have the right WiFi adapter?

I don't remember the name of the one I had that did support it, but I remember it is more along the lines of does the chipset on the card support it then the brand and model of the card.

[Q] tether to ps3

OK, I know this is floating around a few places but it doesn't solve the issue without connectify which is a W7 program only. I've rooted, tethered, and would just like to update my newly ps3 software... i'm not concerned about multilayer games through my 3G connection... that can wait till i move this summer for internet..
so... can anybody tell me an XP program and can change the ad hoc to something my PS3 can recognize? I downloaded a virtual router and i have an Ethernet cable...
any help would be very grateful...
thanks,
The PS3 requires Infrastructure mode (as opposed to AdHoc mode) therefore this is your only option:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818789&highlight=tether
If you have an XP (or most other OSes) machine within range of the PS3, you could plug the PS3 into the computer via Ethernet, and then connect the computer to the phone via the normal ad-hoc wireless tether, and use Internet Connection Sharing in Windows to share the WiFi connection with the Ethernet.
If you don't have an extra computer handy, the Verizon HotSpot app is currently the only other option, as it runs in Infrastructure mode (somebody should investigate how it triggers that... would be nice to have Wireless Tether/etc support it).
Download pda net off the market.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
thanks for the info guys... i tried a few routes... first off was the PDA net paid version... with not luck.
so then i tried just using my tether in combo with a Ethernet connection and viola... i was updating my ps3. i did have some issues with connection, i'd lose it every ten minutes or so and then it became very unstable so some tweaking would be in order. most likely it's from the Ethernet cable i found in the basement from when i moved in???
I did send an email to the developer of Wireless Tether for rooted fellows and while he does have an option for some phones to connect by infrastructure, the fascinate is "Maybe yes... in the next release" so hopefully we can do this wirelessly in the future in a clean free app.

Hmmm... well that makes me wonder...
I would assume that means the 360 can connect via ad hoc... didn't see that one coming...
are there any particular setting on your tether app or anywhere else on your phone that would differ from stock startup?
like i say, the developer noted that the app wouldn't be able to do this wirelessly right now...
I was using barnacle, and read a review on this app where someone commented they used it for halo multiplayer. I dropped what I was doing and tried it, work first try. Maybe its t he xbox, barnacle would not connect to the xbox
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The 360 supports Ad Hoc mode, while the PS3 (for some asinine reason) doesn't (PDA Net would also be useless, since it requires an app running on the machine, IIRC).
I definitely would be quite happy at getting Infrastructure mode in one of the tethering apps, since the Intel wireless in my laptop has absolutely horrible support for Ad Hoc mode (it couldn't even connect before I updated to the latest version... now it just drops it regularly).
I agree... as mentioned above i emailed the dev with tether for root and it sounds like he's working on an infrastructure option for the fas. It already works does on other numerous devices. If i see anything change ya'll be the first to know.

usb tethering rocks

something my last desire never had and something i didn't even know the ns had. after completely screwing up the build system on ubuntu here, it was something i desperately needed. my wifi drivers are borked, so i can't access wifi and was considering a complete reformat, until i noticed the menu option...
thank you ns!
Yeah pretty sweet, i use the portable hto spot option quite a bit , very nifty indeed
btw: is there something like tho opposite of that? sharing a wired pc internet connection with the ns via usb.
Yes. You connect the USB to your nexus s. Then you don't turn on the USB storage. Go to settings wireless options and click on tether.

Oh ic. Sorry. I read that wrong. I don't think There is a simple way to do it. I remember there's a program that lets you turn your laptop into a wireless router. You plug in the Ethernet to your laptop and use the program to transmit the radio like a router. You can probably then use the phone's wifi to connect to that. Ive never tried it but theoretically it should work. Good luck

usb tethering is not something like
" i connect my laptop with the usb port of my NS that(my phone) has internet access over the mobile network and i can use that on my laptop either"??
i mean wi-fi tethering is "sharing" phone's internet connection with other phones/wi-fi enabled devices to access the internet via wireless connection...
so usb tethering should be the same but with cable obviously..
or am i getting something wrong here?

[Q] Networking some devices help!!

OK so i just moved in with my parents for financial reasone and need some help figuring this out. We have comcast internet and a linksys wrt54g router with ddwrt firmware. In the house we have 2 desktops 1 laptop 2 xbox 360s 3 androids and 2 ipod touches. The only one with a ethernet is the desktop where the modem and router is at. everything else is wireless. I have constand dropped connection on my other dekstop and box 360. What is the best way to have the best connection. In my room i have the other desktop and xbox 360. I was thinking of runing an ethernet cable from the router to my room through the attic and to a switch and from the switch my desktop and xbox 360. What do you guys think?
Try changing the channels to avoid interference and try a windsurfer
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
Another possible option rather than running CAT5 around the house would be mains power networking.
For instance my router is upstairs with my PC and UPS running off it.
It connects to a mains network adaptor, and then downstairs behind the TV I have another one going to a switch which my WII, BluRay and 360 are connected to.
Well I would run the cat5 up the attic then doen to the room I am in....but a main ...never heard of it...how's it work

Crickey those slinglinks are huge!
I wonder if the different mains voltage over the pond affects their effectiveness.
If the comcast modem is wireless capable, and you can easily take the linksys and set it up as a repeater in the room where you want your desktop, etc and connect using ethernet or wifi in your room. Assuming of course that the dropping issue you have is due to signal strength rather than a router issue.
If you can't move the linksys, grab another off ebay if you don't have another wifi router around that can be flashed so you can use it as a repeater.
Your option for hard wired of course will work. The only issue you may have with a switch and running cat5 is some don't like to work well with long runs. Just a heads up in case you get a cheaper one and plug it in and don't get a connection.

Use Android device as wi-fi hotspot to share PC internet connection.

Hi I have a PC connect via ethernet to the internet, I would like to connect my phone to the computer so I can broadcast my computers internet connection to my iPad for example. I'm not sure if it forces mobile data when hotspot is enabled.
If not, I'd connect the phone to the PC using internet pass through with mobile data disabled and hot spot enabled. I'm unsure if it will use your PC's internet when broadcasting though

Can I make tablet an AP?

I want to make my tablet a Wi-Fi hotspot so I can share files by connecting my phone to the tablet Wi-Fi ap, and start a ftp server.
Can it be done? I tried foxfi but it crashed when I tried to enable AP.
I can use my phones tether option, but when I do my ftp app says "please connect to a network"
Thanks

Im confused what you are trying to accomplish. If you host the FTP on your phone, and want to connect the Nexus 10 to the FTP to share files, then all you do is on your phone turn on wifi tether, and connect to the wireless network the phone creates from your N10. I dont think it is possible to make a tablet an access point that doesnt have a cell service internet connection. In order for the Nexus 10 to be an "access point" it would actually be just a repeater from your routers (or phones, or whatever) internet connection. But you already have that on your phone and by making your phone the hotspot you just connect your tablet to the phone like it was connecting to any normal wireless network.

No, I just want my Nexus 10 to be able to HOST [read: have IP 192.168.43.1], to be able to connect my phone to it [192.168.43.105], so that my FTP app will see I really am connected to wifi.
In tether mode, phone has 192.168.43.1, however the app doesn't recognize it as being connected since it's in tether, and not regularly connected to wifi, and will not start because it says Please connect to a network.
This is why I would like my Nexus 10 to host an infrastructure network.
Well sorry but I dont know how to help you with that sort of setup. or if it will even work. I highly doubt it will work since normally you MUST be on data to start a tether. This is because it configured your wifi radio for a different mode that allows others to connect. I dont think it is possible to have the same radio be configured in two separate ways at the same time.
WHy not just do what the majority of people do and get a dropbox for free and host the files there. Your tablet and phone will both be able to access it.

I know what I intend to do will work IF I could get my tablet to make a network in infrastructure mode. I do not want to hear about "better ways" to do it, you have no clue what my situation is.
You are really wrong on a lot of points [you do not need an actual data connection/plan to start a tether network, on pretty much any phone that supports it], you really don't know, I understand, but please stop saying "it can't be done," or just stop replying. Also I cannot just use dropbox because it would take a zillion years to upload 4GB movies. And when I'm traveling [like now] I do not always have wifi.

I think I am picking up what you are laying down.
You want to start a wireless network between your N10 and your phone without using a wireless router or access point device.
If you were trying this back in the old days you would simply use a ethernet cross over cable between two ethernet cards and set them to have the same subnet.
Can't say that I know how to do this though with wireless networking.

This is the type of thing Wifi Direct is supposed to be for. The Nexus 10 supports that, it's under the menu in wireless settings. Not sure if your phone does, of course.
Also, depending on AP settings, two devices (clients) on the same wireless network can communicate with each other. It's relayed through the AP, so it will be somewhat slower.

Still not clear as to what the problem is. Since both on 192.168 non-routable networks presumably they are sitting next to one another. Then who cares which device is the AP? One should be able to run ftp server and the other ftp client. Since he doesn't need data then it seems ftp is just to access one device from the over - no true tether for external data.

Here's what I did and it works to share files between phone and tablet without PC using ftp. Both devices running ES File Explorer. Droid Charge phone hotspot started - has IP address 192.168.43.1. Turn on ftp server within es file explorer on phone. Connect to phone from tablet over WiFi. Phone assigns tablet IP address - in this case 192.168.43.131. On the tablet open es file explorer and define the ftp server that is running on the phone. Once done perform the ftp connection from the tablet to the phone. You can then ftp between the two for as much as you want.
I am paying for phone tethering app on phone. The apps I see in the market seem to identify issues with JB or seem just too old to depend on. Regardless, if you just want to ftp between the two you do not need tethering. You need an app that will act as a hotspot managing devices, security and IP addresses. Another option is a cheap portable access point. Again, you keep focusing on ftp - not the internet. The ap creates a WiFi network that your phone and tablet can connect to - no different than a crossover cable between two wired Ethernet devices. As long as the both are on the same network you are good to go.
BTW - you may think you've perfectly explained what you are looking for answers to. You have not so you should not be too surprised at some of the answers.

When I tether my tablet to my phone (haven't tried other way around), it see's its WiFi as a normal WiFi, not as a mobile hotspot or anything. There's different device profiles to choose from, and I think a choice for either ad-hoc or infrastructure; and it's free

That's the problem, my main router only gets about 150KB/s when I stream it both connected to that. I need a router in my room, and my phone has a tether mode that acts as a router [192.168.43.1, gives DHCP IPs, etc]. The only thing, the program I used ["FTP server"] doesn't recognize I have a 192.168 IP, because it sees the regular wifi is off [and tethering is on, which I solely use as a router, not internet].
I will look into the other file manager mentioned, it sounds like it might be able to do what I'm looking for. thanks

The only thing, the program I used ["FTP server"] doesn't recognize I have a 192.168 IP, because it sees the regular wifi is off [and tethering is on, which I solely use as a router, not internet].
I will look into the other file manager mentioned, it sounds like it might be able to do what I'm looking for. thanks
Yeah I did try this. It fails, the log says it failed to set SSID, and a couple other things that are mandatory in order for it to work. :S thanks

If all you want to do is stream movies and music, try searching Play store for a DLNA Media Server. A quick search on Google turned up many. You should be able to forget about what wireless router, IP, etc, - your phone/tablet should show up to the network as a DLNA Media Server.
The other solution with ES File Explorer will indeed work as a file access component. I use it at home to access movies on my home network.
