Shield streaming to PC after PC sleeps - Shield General

Has anyone else noticed how after you wake up your PC after sleep a couple times that streaming ceases to work? My Shield can't find the PC at all no matter what, I tried refreshing it through geforce experience and such but nothing works except for restarting the PC completely. I'd love to just be able to hit my PC's power button and bam, right back into being able to stream.

Yes, my PC had this issue as well. I turned off allowing my desktop to suspend because of this issue.

Yeah, I unfortunately did the same. It'd really be nice to wake up the PC with Shield, hope its thought of for future updates...possibly in custom ROM?

I have seen many problem with windows, from using the suspend feature. I also hate the screen saver as it likes to start when I am watching videos.

Yeah I never use the screen saver, usually just left it on but, then my power bill skyrockets. I guess I'll just have to stick to a long power up ...I need an SSD!

I don't use hibernate/suspend or screensavers, but I do turn the monitor off using the switch on the monitor, and turn the pc off at night or when i won't be using it for long periods of time.

Mine is hooked up to my TV, gotta love gaming on the big screen, but when I go to the bedroom with Shield I like to leave the PC on so I can still hit up some games while my wife goes to sleep. Lately, I've been just using Splash top streamer after I'm done to turn off my PC which works like a charm

1 - battery drain in standby shouldn't be significant but you can reduce it by turning off radios you don't need and/or reducing the update interval of any apps you have checking in the background.
2 - I'm not sure what's happening here, usually the wifi logo overwrites the 3g one so it is obvious which one is in use (at least it does on my UK SGT, might be different for CDMA). Either way switching on and off the various radios is easily done from the notification area, just swipe down from the top of the screen to show toggles for wifi, bt, gps, silent mode & orientation lock.
Edit: oops, I miss remembered, I don't know of an easy way to switch the mobile radio.
3 - I had a bit of a play with allshare day one but haven't had time to give it a proper workout yet.
4 - I haven't had mine run down that far but it sounds like a sensible power saving measure, better to see it dim for a while than bright for two minutes!
5 - the screen auto adjust in the display settings seems to help a lot. Other than that I've found the battery life to be very good for the most part. I tend to only switch on wifi if I have a big download to do so that might help in my case.
Welcome by the way, hope you enjoy the tab!

THANKS Bill! Appreciate the info/advice!
I guess I am getting confused between the 3g/ the strength bars. So if it doesnt say 3g but just shows signal strength then its probably using wifi?
Does anyone know if the SGT defaults to wifi first then to 3g? Just curious.

When wifi is on it turns 3g off. I use an app called tasker to save my battery. I have it set to turn wifi/3g off when the screen turns off, and if I place it face down it sets the device into airplane mode, left in this state the battery drains very slow when not in use. Tasker is not the cheapest app but you are only limited by your imagination what you can do with it.

Anyone else know how to use allshare? According to samsung you cannot stream from your pc to the tablet is this correct?
i am actually trying to do both stream from the pc to the tab and then seperately stream from the tab to the tv or blu ray player and or pc and nothing works any which way? not sure how to get this to work?
thanks
AllShare is an app that you can use to connect to other Samsung AllShare enabled divices like TV's. I removed the app. It is completely useless. (It would be so nice if there was an app by which I could connect to my homenetwork.)

Not quite correct! It allows you to stream from/to other DLNA devices which includes some Samsung TV's, but plenty of other devices too.
For example, I use to it to stream from/to my PCs with Media Center.

Not original cable.
I want TV out to work when screen is off.
How to do?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
As far as I'm aware, the TV out comes from the screen feed and the audio feed. Therefore, if you do not have any feed to screen there is no feed to TV from the jack socket.
@borchgrevink,
The cable to use is a Nokia TV out cable, can be got in the UK from the bay for less than £2.00
Like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190466684348#ht_2626wt_1139
Mvideoplayer app developer responded my email when I asked him if this would be possible:
"...Made a test build with that feature which I tested on my Nexus One with 2.2. It didn't work, when I sat the brightness to 0 the playback stopped and the phone went to sleep (I didn't know that), I guess this is how it works and that means it's not possible. There is no other way in the API to just turn of the screen. It's not allowed. "
Bummer...
I've tried the Screen Filter widget, but it shades the TV screen a well, so, the only way to spend LESS battery is to set the brightness to minimum before switching to your player of choice (in Mvideoplayer you can easily set it via a slider in the GUI).

I have used stickmount, USB otg helper and also native otg in custom roms. while transferring files by solid explorer or root explorer once I turn off screen I can't turn it on again until the transfer is complete
I've noticed this too.
I'm not sure if is completely blocked out (until completion), or just horrendously slow responding to interrupts generated by screen touches/button presses. I seem to remember waking the screen up - after a huge delay - on a multi-minute data transfer.
While it is annoying, it really doesn't surprise me much; most modern OS'es seem like their UIs slow down to a crawl under heavy I/O pressure between slow mass storage devices.
I suppose one cruddy workaround is to turn off the screen timeout ahead of the long copy operation...

If it we're so then it would slow down even when the screen was on instead becoming unresponsive the instant screen was turned off

Yeah ... maybe. I'm not sure. In the past, I experienced difficulty in waking other android devices that had low OC minimum frequencies that would otherwise behave just fine so long as the screen stayed on. I don't know if interrupts start to stack up, or what, but I suspect that the rate governor behavior affects this, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that a screen-off condition figures into the hueristics used by some rate governors or even kernel PM (power management) code. But that's speculation - I don't know.
I guess you could look at this as a feature rather than a bug - if you are performing a long copy, tapping on the power button tells you if it is done!
I am using file manager HD which works well in copying , although there is a 1-2 second delay in unlocking screen when copying, but still it works fine

MotoACTV as a sleep tracker

I am a bit put off by the fact that motorola hasn't implemented a sleep tracker into the motoACTV. Given that they are pretty much all the rage nowadays with fitness trackers (ie. Fitbit zip and one, Jawbone UP, etc).
Im wondering if anyone has tried to use their rooted motoactv to run a sleep tracking app from the market place and how it worked for you? I just downloaded SleepBot (unless you have another recommendation) and am planning to try it tonight. However that app is meant to be ran on a phone, while plugged in and set near your pillow. It uses the phone's accelerometer to monitor your tossing and turning in bed, the phone's microphone to monitor your noises/snoring/sleeptalking and also requires the phone screen to be on during the whole time. That last part is what has me worried. I don't think that the motoactv has the ability to keep a screen lit, albeit the app dims the screen for you, for 8+hrs.
It would be nice to have software built into the MotoACTV like the jawbone UP does. Anyone have some input?
Tried sleepbot app. Didn't work. The screen size doesn't allow the whole app to display once in sleep mode tracking motion. The wake up button gets hidden and the app gets stuck in the tracking mode rendering pretty much useless. Tonight um trying sleep as android. This time I tested it during tracking and confirmed the app fits the screen or can be scrollable.
I was surprised to wake up and have 60% battery left.

The actv has a built in sleep tracker. DPRom has it enabled. The software is in all roms that contain the stock firmware, but the app may be disabled for some as it doesn't come with an icon to launch it. In those cases, you may be able to manually launch it using a file explorer or something. It is called "SleepAnalysis.apk".

That sucks. Hopefully they haven't completely abandoned it. I've used it the past 2 nights. It works well. Maybe they're planning to release a new smart watch and launch the finished product of the sleep analysis then. And then xda peeps will port it to motoactv!
A couple of issues I've run into with the current state of the sleep analysis is that you must be at least 80% charge before starting because over the course of your sleep it discharges by about 75%(this might be because of root and rom). The tracker works when screen is off unlike a lot of sleep tracking apps on the market for smartphones. Also it usually states that I'm awake for 1hr and been awaken 7-8 times during my sleep. I don't know how true that is. The graph is hard to read due to screen size as well. I'm sure there was going to be a syncing deal with it. To export to phone or pc.
A few things I want to learn is how exactly the motoactv knows when I'm in deep sleep/ light sleep, and what sets it off to say I'm awake. Also want to know what's the optimum way to wear it. With wrist strap or clip on hip.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
Funny, I turned on marathon mode to save battery and tracked my sleep last night (which I only got 4 hrs). Turns out that the 3 second refresh caused me to be in "deep sleep" for all four hours which is bogus.
On the up side it finished the night with 80% battery which is a drastic savings over being on normal battery saver.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
Well after a week of using the native sleep tracker, I've gotta say it isn't very good. I was hoping it'll give me me info sheet the initial 7 nights. But nothing. You can't view previous cycles, only the overall score. But this was to be expected because it's largely unfinished. It's a shame though. And the android Market is lacking beyond sleep as andros or sleep bot.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
Are they on the market for another android device? If so, download it to that device, titanium backup, then copy the backed up apk to your computer and sideload it to the actv via adb.
Sent using XDA-funded carrier pigeons
Yes they are. They work but they're heavy on the battery.
As of late, the native sleep analysis application has begun to force close every time.

It does not work very well at all, it tends to drain the battery of the motoactv during the night. The app recommends you plug your phone in during use, so it is pretty power hungry.

There is no "off" on the Nexus Player, just like the Chromecast. It goes into a low powered standby mode after a few minutes, waiting for any Google Cast connections to wake it up and start playing (with HDMI-CEC enabled on TV or receiver, it'll automatically turn on, switch inputs, etc to start playing your cast immediately).

Like @Elrondolio already mentioned, there is no "Power Off" feature (which I HATE!!!). However, you could look for some kind of switch that you could attach to the power adapter cord so that you don't have to unplug every time that you want to turn the device off...something like this: http://www.adafruit.com/products/1125 (though, I have no idea whether or not that specific cord actually will work...I'm just presenting the concept). I've done this with my raspberry pi and it's awesome!
Another option would be to plug the player into an outlet that is controlled by a light switch (which would be much nicer than the cord IMO).

I'm truly not trying to be confrontational here, simply curious: why do you hate that it's always on (in low power mode) so much?
To me, I see it no different than another phone or tablet in my home as it has nearly the exact same innards... all of my family's phones and tablets are on 24/7 as well, either on battery or charging on the mains. Having to boot up the box for a quick cast to show a quick video/trailer/etc to the family or start playing some music would be an inconvenience, I'd think, as having to wait for a receiver to boot its OS every time would be.
Again, simply curious as to your reasoning is all. Thanks!
Thanks everyone for your explanation.
I also have a Chromecast installed on my TV and I don't have any problem with it being always on WHEN my TV is turned on. However for the nexus player it will be truly always on unless you switch off the main.
I just got my nexus player yesterday so I dunno if it will be warm/hot if it's always on even when not in use. Anyway if it's not warm/hot if not in use then I've got no problem with it.
Thanks again everyone!

No worries about being confrontational, everybody has there own likes/dislikes...nothing wrong with that. Part of it is the made desire for efficiency that I have...why have something consuming power and bandwidth when it's not being used? Also, the amount of time that I and my family are using it is far less than the time that we aren't using it, if I was using it all day, I might not mind so much. Also, it's nice to do a reboot without unplugging the device, especially since I want to put it in a cabinet that is somewhat of a tight space. But, probably one of the biggest things that comes to my mind is connection to the internet on a 24/7 basis really bugs me. I know that my phone and my wife's phone is always connected...but it needs to be to notify me of things, my TV isn't notifying me of anything, I just want to use it when I want some good old couch potato entertainment, so why take up my bandwidth (I assume that it does some kind of check) and use any amount of power (which I do pay for, no matter how little the power usage is) when it isn't needed?
Personally, I believe that the following principle (highly advocated by Google) should have been followed: "Decide for me but let me have the final say" (http://developer.android.com/design/get-started/principles.html#decide-for-me). In other words, give the option to leave it on all the time for those that want it...but allow for powering off for those who don't. That way, everybody is happy.
I know this isn't an on-device fix, but if you're seriously concerned about your TV accessories only being on when the TV is on, there are many power strips out there that have a "master" outlet that toggles power to the rest of the outlets based on when the master device is on. So turning your TV on and off will switch power to the rest of your devices.
A reboot option would be nice. As for turning the NP off, I am using a TRIPP LITE TLP76MSG Eco Green Switched 7 Outlet Conserve Energy Surge Protector from Amazon.
Just an update, I found that when not in use the player is cool to the touch. As such I believe it goes into a low power/power saving mode. I have no issues with it being always on now. Way to go, google/asus. :good:
Confirmation of sleep mode
My nexus player's light is always on. Does anyone know if this means the unit is on or in sleep mode after the 30 minutes of inactivity? I have set it to 30 minutes and daydream does come on. Based on the manual, when the light is on the unit is on.
Thanks
https://support.google.com/androidtv/answer/6123074?hl=en&ref_topic=6121506
I think the light just means it has power, so it can be in sleep mode even when the light is on.
This was my main concern yesterday.
(I had since a week ago the Nexus Player but due my Internet provider's laziness, it was not until last night I could FINALLY setup my account and the device).
I noticed the DayDream options but I agree that the same OS needs an reboot option.
Mine doesn't switch back on when the TV is turned on again. Just a black screen and doesn't respond to pressing buttons on the remote.

I recently brought a Nexus Player, I am having the same problem like you. Is this a problem with the software?
Understand that you can't power off the Nexus Player, but will it damage the internal components of the player (flash drive, etc) in the long run if you just simply cut off the power supply, which is apparently the only way to off the device?

Me too.. Screen is blank and will not come back to the launcher when a remote button is pressed. Does anyone know why? is it a hardware fault? Thanks in advance

I actually got it exchanged at the store. The problem disappeared with the new one (also using 5.1.1). So get a replacement!

Hi,
How do you turn off the Nexus player? I can't find an option for it, I had to just switch off the power instead.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
